Mikey Madison is getting a lot of Oscar buzz for her powerful lead performance in Anora, but she got her first big break playing Max in Pamela Adlons underappreciated dramedy series Better Things. Madison is one of Hollywoods most promising rising stars right now; Anora is the latest of many high-profile roles shes played in recent years. In 2019, she played notorious Manson Family member Susan Atkins in Quentin Tarantinos 60s-set epic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2022, she played a new incarnation of Ghostface, Amber Freeman, in Scream.
Anora has made Madison a bigger star than ever. Its expected to land a Best Picture nomination, a Best Director nomination for Baker, and a Best Actress nomination for Madison. Madison gives one...

Charlie Wright, nephew of actress Robin Wright, had a memorable leading role in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, facing backlash for recasting. Wright's early TV appearances in The Millers and Better Things showcase his commitment to making an impact on screen, no matter the role. Despite facing online hate for his role in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Wright found inspiration and passion for acting in projects like Yellowjackets.
Charlie Wright may have only had a few performances in his career, but they've all been in notable movies and TV shows, including one memorable leading part. As the nephew of Robin Wright, the Golden Globe-winning actress and star of Forrest Gump, Princess Bride, and many other classics, it could be that Charlie was inspired to enter the industry by his aunt. Three producers behind Rebel Wilson’s movie “The Deb” have sued her for defamation in California after the “Pitch Perfect” star accused them of embezzling funds and sabotaging her feature directorial debut. Variety has also exclusively obtained a letter of demand sent by Wilson to the producers in June, detailing previous allegations of financial impropriety and sexual harassment.
On Wednesday, Wilson posted a video message to Instagram captioned “If my movie gets buried at least you know why,” and went on to accuse producers Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron and executive producer Vince Holden of “embezzling funds” from the project, as well as “absolute viciousness and retaliatory behavior” in the aftermath. In the producers’ filing, they denied these accusations and claimed that Wilson has attempted to hold the film hostage over credits for screenwriting and musical recordings.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Series: "Better Things"
Where You Can Stream It: Hulu
The Pitch: Sam Fox is an actress living in LA with her three kids -- sweet youngest daughter Duke (Olivia Edward), social justice-minded middle child Frankie (Hannah Riley), and adventurous, tempestuous eldest, Max ("Scream" star Mikey Madison). Sam's beautiful house, the setting for much of the series' chaos and joy, also sits across from her forgetful and particular mother's (Celia Imrie) place.
This setup may make "Better Things" sound like a sitcom, but it's actually a series with a beautiful, serendipitous, nearly free-association structure. The show was initially co-created by Louis C.K. (whose network deal was terminated in 2017 in light of his admitted sexual misconduct), but it's clearly Adlon's baby through and through.

“There was not a moment I forgot just how crazy it was what we were asking them to do,” remembers Clea DuVall about casting the stars of her Freevee series “High School.” She and fellow showrunner Laura Kittrell chose twins Railey Gilliland and Seazynn Gilliland to play fictionalized versions of the real-life musical duo Tegan and Sara Quin, even though neither had any acting experience. Kittrell adds that on the first day of shooting, all their doubts melted away. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“High School” is based on Tegan and Sara’s autobiography of the same name, and the series is a queer coming-of-age story that chronicles a year in the twins’ lives as they first discover their talent for music while navigating a new high school. DuVall met the musicians backstage at one of their performances over 15 years ago and struck up a friendship with them. She...

“Gigi & Nate” begins with two leaps. The first is out of terror, when Gigi, a capuchin monkey at a sad-sack roadside petting zoo, tries to steer clear of her “caretaker.” The second is the sweet leap of boy-joy that 17-year-old Nate Gibson takes off a rocky ledge and into a pond. In this amiable, if unnecessarily manipulative, movie about the human-animal bond — as well as the different forms resilience can take — that fateful second leap will lead the young man and the monkey to each other.
Gigi is rescued by a woman who works for an organization that provides service animals to people with disabilities. Nate (played by British rising star Charlie Rowe) is initially not so fortunate. Shortly after that dive, as he and his family ready for a Fourth of July celebration at their vacation cabin, he begins to feel increasingly lousy. "Gigi allows me to live my life to the fullest every single day. I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for her." Roadside Attractions has revealed an official trailer for a true story inspirational dramedy titled Gigi & Nate, from filmmaker Nick Hamm. The film is arriving in theaters in early September, for those interested in watching. A young man's life is turned upside down after he is left a quadriplegic. Moving forward seems near impossible until he meets his unlikely service animal, Gigi - a curious and intelligent capuchin monkey. She helps Nate find what he needs most: hope. Charlie Rowe stars in the film as Nate, with an ensemble cast including Zoe Margaret Colletti, Marcia Gay Harden, Josephine Langford, Jim Belushi (!!), Diane Ladd, Tara Summers, and Hannah Alligood. This looks extra cheesy, especially with the music in this trailer, but the little monkey is so adorable and so lovely.

Roadside Attractions has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Free Turn’s “Gigi & Nate.” The film stars Charlie Rowe, Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden, and Jim Belushi, and is based on true events. It tells the story of Nate Gibson, a young man whose life is turned upside down after he suffers a near-fatal illness and is left a quadriplegic.
And “Gigi & Nate” also serves as the introduction to a pint-sized, though still formidable, new talent. Making her big-screen debut in the titular role of service animal “Gigi” is Allie, an adorable capuchin monkey. In the movie, Gigi is trained to assist Nate with his basic needs and helps him rediscover his sense of hope. Look for audiences to fall in love with Allie/Gigi when Roadside Attractions releases the film exclusively in theaters on Sept. 2, 2022.

For a television series as unique and special as FX’s Better Things, it only makes sense to end it with a proper farewell to single mother/actress Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon) and her colorful orbit of family and friends. In fact, without spoiling what’s to come in the final 10 episodes, Adlon reveals to TV Insider that she knew exactly what she wanted going into crafting the fifth season, which premieres on Monday on FX (next day on Hulu). “It was tough because I knew I wanted to give Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah Riley), Duke (Olivia Edward), Phil (Celia Imrie), and then finally Sam enough consideration and let them all have a win, kind of, in a way,” Adlon says. “It was challenging trying to figure out and to be able to feel this satisfaction that everybody has moved forward in a way, including the village. And everybody...

Midway through the final season of “Better Things,” Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon) takes a break from a directing gig for a quick chat with the producer. Their day hasn’t been easy. The child actor won’t (or can’t) stop shouting his lines. His mom isn’t helping, demanding her son be called by his character’s name and insisting he has a “hard out” well ahead of wrap. The sitcom’s star, played by Ron Cephas Jones, is friends with Sam and has been cordial to her… until he snaps when she tries to do her job and, you know, direct him.
Throughout it all, the producer, Eli (Lena Waithe), has been silent yet sympathetic. She sees what’s going on, offering a knowing glance or supportive nod while Sam deals with problems that existed long before she took over the director’s chair. As it turns out,...

For most of her acting career, Pamela Adlon was best known for her voice, even though she rarely felt like she had one of her own.
Adlon, née Segall, entered the family business as a teenager — her father Don Segall was a sitcom writer — mostly shuffling around in small TV roles in the Eighties before finding a niche in the Nineties as a voice actor, most famously as middle schooler Bobby Hill on King of the Hill. She worked a lot but rarely felt secure in her career prospects or her level of artistry.

The fifth and final season of FX‘s Better Things is set to premiere on February 28 at 10 p.m., and creator Pamela Adlon already is toying with the idea of rebooting it a la Sex and the City‘s And Just Like That…
“I really love this. It’s an incredible thing that we had these five seasons,” Adlon told Deadline during the show’s TCA panel on Thursday. “We have 52 episodes of these stories of this family, and I don’t think there’s any doubt that we could go on and on. The stories would keep changing. The run hasn’t run because there are all of these lives, and they all still have more stories to tell.”

Here’s wishing you the bluest sky, Better Things. FX said today that the fifth and final season of its comedy written, directed and produced by and star Pamela Adlon will premiere at 10 p.m. Monday, February 28. It also will stream on Hulu.
The FX Productions show’s ending run focuses on “the road ahead” for Sam Fox (Adlon), so devoted to her life as a working actor and single mother as she navigates three coming-of-age daughters, the challenges of her chosen career and her mother’s increasing signs of aging — as well as her own. As each of the Fox women head into the next phase of their life, they are inspired to re-evaluate themselves, learn from the past and find their own direction.
Mikey Madison, Hannah Riley and Olivia Edward stars as Sam’s daughters, and Celia Imrie plays her mother.

The upcoming fifth season of Pamela Adlon’s acclaimed comedy-drama Better Things will be its last. Ordered last year, Season 5 is currently filming for a 2022 premiere.
“I will forever be grateful to FX for allowing me to tell stories the way I see the world, and want the world to be seen,” Adlon said in a statement to Deadline. “Making this show has been film school for me. I bow down to my crew and my cast. And I can’t wait for people to discover and re-discover Better Things. This is gonna be a wrap on Sam Fox (for now) See you at the after party.”
Adlon executive produces, writes, directs, showruns and stars in Better Things, which tells the story of Sam Fox (Adlon), a single mother and working actor with no filter, raising her three daughters, Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah Alligood) and Duke (Olivia Edward) in Los Angeles.

When it comes to playing actress and single mother of three Sam Fox on FX’s Better Things, creator-director-writer-star Pamela Adlon said during Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event that her onscreen character “Sam is me in a cape. I joke that FX is paying for my therapy and I’m able to live out my fantasies in the script.”
Better Things, which just clocked its fourth season, follows Fox’s life as she manages her precocious kids, finds new love, and deals with old love in the colorful landscape of the City of Angels. The series with its unique approach to storytelling evokes such filmmakers as Paulo Sorrentino and Nic Winding Refn, but for Adlon it’s John Cassavettes, Bob Fosse, Francois Truffaut and Luis Bunuel who worked their way into her creative sensibility.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Things” Season 4, Episode 10, “Listen to the Roosters.”]
Ghosts are walking among us, and they’re feeling very, very good.
One ghost in particular gets a temporary spotlight in the “Better Things” Season 4 finale (now available on Hulu), as a gray-haired woman in a yellow dress (played by Ellen Geer) shares a bit of foresight with Duke (Olivia Edward), the Fox family medium. Duke regularly connects with spirits, whether it’s the recurring presence of her grandfather in Season 3 or during the otherworldly Season 2 episode, “White Rock,” so it’s not all that surprising when her new friend up and vanishes via an apparitional Irish goodbye.
But before she leaves, this ghost offers a key bit of advice. Claiming she can see the future, Duke (in a moment of prescience) first asks if there is a future (there is), before saying, “I never want to get married or have kids...

Pamela Adlon is a true auteur.
The co-creator, writer, producer, director and star of “Better Things” has the reins of the FX comedy, and she may hold them tighter than most performers who step behind the scenes, with her fingerprints on every stage of the storytelling, from outlines in the writers’ room to sound mixing during post-production.
“I never could have imagined that I would have the discipline to stick it out from the first person there to the last person there — to do what I’m doing now,” Adlon tells Variety. “It tests your mettle when you go into other areas and realize, ‘Well, Ok I need to have the time and the patience to sit in a writers’ room for three months and to be in prep and pre-production and go on all of these scouts, and then I need to have the time and the patience to...

Sam Fox is the ideal television star. Played with sagacious pluck by Pamela Adlon and inspired by her life, work, and family, the eccentric “Better Things” lead is curiously hard to read. Take an early Season 4 episode, when Sam discovers an owl nesting under her bedcovers. Will she freak out? Will she shoo it away? Will she take care of it, like she takes care of so many others? Will she make it a family affair, inviting her three daughters into the conversation before naming the owl Edwin and wrapping it in a blanket?
You may think you know what Sam is going to do next, but rarely are those assumptions rewarded. “Better Things” purposefully chooses its events, eliminating the obvious developments to dwell on defining moments. Sam’s unpredictability is enticing on its own, as are her equally unexpected adventures, but the perpetual resourcefulness with which she lives her life,...

In the fifth episode of the new season of FX’s wonderful Better Things, three generations of the Fox family — mom Sam (creator-star Pamela Adlon), grandmother Phil (Celia Imrie), and daughter Frankie (Hannah Alligood) — are enjoying a late-night snack and talking about which part of the family Sam inherited her chronic hand pain from. Frankie interjects, “If I ever get the impulse to just strike up conversation with complete strangers everywhere I go, I will 100 percent hold it against you, Sam.”

Pamela Adlon was in her happy place on Wednesday night, surrounded by friends, family members and fans as FX toasted the fourth season premiere of her critically adored comedy “Better Things.”
Adlon joked as she surveyed the audience in the Whitby Hotel screening room in Manhattan that the crowd was full of “Easter eggs” for her autobiographical show, starting with her real-life brother, Greg Segall, who is portrayed by Kevin Pollak in the series.
Adlon noted that she considers New York her “home town” and she pointed out a slew of old friends in the crowd, some of whom have influenced characters, character names and storylines on “Better Things,” which bowed Wednesday on FX. Adlon stars as an actor and single mother of a certain age who is struggling to stay afloat in Hollywood while raising three daughters.
“It has been an incredible time and journey for me,” Adlon said of producing the show.

For three seasons, we have been involved with some of the most intimate details of Sam Fox and her three daughters, Max, Frankie, and Duke.
The Pamela Adlon fronted series was created by her, as well, and it feels as personal to Adlon as the life created for her character and family on screen.
For decades, families on television were more ideal than our own. Adlon's creation examines three generations of women all coming into their own at various life stages, and all of the joy and misery that being closely related brings to the table.
Better Things Season 4 embraces the future while still honoring the past.
Adlon's Sam Fox, clearly an expression of her own life in character form, loves her family unconditionally, but that doesn't mean that they don't argue with the best of them. Better Things infuses realism into television families that is rarely seen elsewhere.

As the father of two boys, I must say that no television show on the air right now better encapsulates the joys and sorrows of parenthood than Pamela Adlon’s FX series “Better Things.” It may be the best comedy since “Roseanne” to show warts-and-all parenting: a turbulent, messy, battle royale that brings out the best and worst in both parent and child. And in the show’s acclaimed third season, those ups and downs were displayed in their most hilarious and painful glory.
The series revolves around Sam (Adlon), a working actress and single mom to three girls: Max (Mikey Madison), Frankie (Hannah Alligood) and Duke (Olivia Edward). As is the case in most families, each child is a unique entity brimming with quirks, strengths and flaws. And each in her own way tests Sam’s parental endurance.

“Better Things” is no stranger to moments that draw on music as a way to punctuate a specific emotion. In Thursday’s memorable Season 3 finale, “Shake the Cocktail,” the episode culminates in a rousing choral performance of Florence + the Machine’s “Shake It Out.” It’s a companion piece to the blissful Episode 9-ending group rendition of “On the Street Where You Live,” as the family and friends of Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon) watch Frankie (Hannah Alligood) take part in belting out a performance that captures all of the swirling anxiety and uncertainty that’s been hanging over many of the show’s central characters.
