So far, the marketing behind Sony’s upcoming Anaconda has been a confusing one, signaling an adventure comedy that forgets the horror. But one of the film’s stars, Jack Black, has recently revealed that the new film hasn’t forgotten the scares after all.

“It’s a lot funnier than the original,” Black told EW, “but it does have a lot of the original vibes in terms of the scary parts. It’s a horror film for real, but it’s also got some clownin’ for sure.”

While the “clownin'” part of the equation has been evident from the beginning, it’s reassuring to hear the actor confirm that Anaconda will capture the original film’s tone and horror in some way. Just how much remains to be seen, of course, but the film is taking a meta approach.

Production on Sony's Anaconda is coming to a close. Selton Mello, one of the stars of the highly-anticipated reboot of the classic '90s movie, recently shared that he has wrapped filming.

Mello shared a new behind-the-scenes image of himself with Anaconda co-stars Paul Rudd and Jack Black on his Instagram account to announce that he had finished filming the reboot. The actor had nothing but nice things to say about his co-stars, calling them (translated from Portuguese) "two extraordinary actors, but even better: two extraordinary people." Mello also singled out the rest of the Anaconda cast, noting that Steve Zahn, Thandiwe Newton, and Daniela Melchior had become "new friends" to him. "I pack my bags very happy with what I experienced," he added, reminding fans that Anaconda is neither a remake nor a sequel, but is "coming soon to a theater near you."

The original 1997 Anaconda starred Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube and followed a National Geographic-esque film crew that is taken hostage by an insane hunter, who forces them along on his quest to capture the world’s largest and deadliest snake, an anaconda. The movie grossed $65.9M domestic off a $16.6M opening and went on to make $136.9M worldwide.

Over the years, many hilarious comedy movies have actually underperformed at the box office. Even beloved classics like Office Space and Wet Hot American Summer completely flopped upon their original release, barely managing to recuperate their budget (if they were even able to do so at all). Of course, the box office numbers are far from the most important indicator of a film's quality, especially when that film's primary goal is to make its viewers laugh. These recent comedy movies may have failed to attract huge audiences to the theater, but they don't fail to bring big laughs when they're needed most.

As DC fan, I appreciate that he's doing his part to boost the company's comic books. Sony is investing more and more in its planned reboot of the Anaconda movie series, which continues to take shape.

Debuting in 1997 – with Jon Voight’s sneer and a massive snake, all under the watchful eye of director Luis Llosa – Anaconda was a solid hit. Still, its subsequent sequels and crossovers never troubled the inside of a cinema.

However, the new reboot – which has been active since early 2020 – is heading for the big screen, and has attracted a notably comic cast.

Jack Black and Paul Rudd were early additions, and joining now is Daniela Melchior in what Deadline reports is in an ‘unknown’ role. We’ve got a bit of info on that, however.

Earlier this year, the news broke that Columbia Pictures is planning to squeeze new life out of the Anaconda franchise, with The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent director Tom Gormican set to helm a reimagining of the 1997 giant snake horror movie.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black have now been confirmed to play the lead roles, and according to Deadline, Daniela Melchior has also joined the cast.
