Four and a half years ago, Sony’s Columbia Pictures announced that they were developing a reboot / reimagining of the 1997 “nature run amok” thriller Anaconda (watch it Here), with the intention of “taking what was a simple and relatively cheap programmer with a B-movie concept and event-izing it in scope and budget.” Back in 2023, we heard that Tom Gormican would be writing and directing the film as his follow-up to the well-received action comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. In recent months, Gormican’s Anaconda reboot, which takes a meta approach, has been making its way through production with a cast that includes Jack Black (School of Rock), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Thandiwe Newton (Westworld), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad), Steve Zahn (Joy Ride), Selton Mello (Bury Your Dead), and Ione Skye (Zodiac). So far, the marketing behind Sony’s upcoming Anaconda has been a confusing one, signaling an adventure comedy that forgets the horror. But one of the film’s stars, Jack Black, has recently revealed that the new film hasn’t forgotten the scares after all.
Black stars alongside Paul Rudd (Death of a Unicorn) in Anaconda, arriving in theaters December 25, 2025.
“It’s a lot funnier than the original,” Black told EW, “but it does have a lot of the original vibes in terms of the scary parts. It’s a horror film for real, but it’s also got some clownin’ for sure.”
While the “clownin'” part of the equation has been evident from the beginning, it’s reassuring to hear the actor confirm that Anaconda will capture the original film’s tone and horror in some way. Just how much remains to be seen, of course, but the film is taking a meta approach.

While plot details remain under wraps for it, Paul Rudd has shared some insight into how the new Anacondafits into the franchise. Originally kicking off with the Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez-led film of the same name, the horror movie series has since comprised of a standalone sequel, two back-to-back sequels, a Lake Placid crossover and Chinese reimagining. Development on the Anaconda reboot was revealed in early 2020, with Rudd and Jack Black joining to lead the movie's ensemble cast in mid 2024 and filming beginning in January 2025.
During a recent interview with Collider for his upcoming A24 horror-comedy Death of a Unicorn, Rudd was asked about what audiences could expect from his Anaconda reboot. In looking specifically at how the movie connects to the wider franchise, Rudd confirmed it won't be a direct remake of the cult classic original horror title, instead following a group of characters who are "certainly inspired" by the original.

James Gunn has become a name synonymous with the superhero genre, and while he's done other projects outside of the comic book movies - both before and since his big break with the first Guardians of the Galaxy flick - you can't deny that superheroes are his bread and butter. He now turns his attention to overseeing DC Studios' new DC Universe, along with Peter Safran, which will look to start a brand new chapter in the storied history of DC Comics characters on the big screen.
With the official start of his DC Universe coming out in July of this year with his Superman film (which Gunn himself directed) and the second season of Peacemaker also arriving at some point this year, let's take a look back at all of the DC projects Gunn has worked on thus far, and see if we can find a way of ranking them from worst to best.

Usually, it’s the films that are loud at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin. One of the oddest movie marketing campaigns of all time rolls on with another unconventional announcement from Sony’s upcoming Anaconda, a project that’s all around hard to get a clear handle on. Arriving in theaters December 25, 2025, the franchise reboot is clearly taking a more comedic approach to the material, with Jack Black and Paul Rudd starring.
This latest video features Jack Black performing a Tenacious D-style song to officially announce the main cast of Anaconda, which also includes Thandiwe Newton (“Westworld”), Steve Zahn (“Silo,” Joy Ride), Brazilian actor Selton Mello, and Daniela Melchior.
Ione Skye, we recently learned, will also star in the new movie.
In Anaconda‘s big screen return, “a group of friends facing mid-life crises are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes, and violent criminals.

The action outing stands at just 23% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences slightly more enamored and scoring the movie 44% on the Popcornmeter. “Mile 22 lets the bullets fly -- and not much else -- in a thrill-deficient action thriller whose title proves sadly fitting for a film that feels close to a marathon endurance test,” the critics’ consensus reads. You can check out the official synopsis below.

James Gunn is known for being a creature of habit. He has worked with the same actors more than a handful of times throughout his career, regardless of what project he is working on. Be it Michael Rooker, Daniela Melchior, Nathan Fillion, or Mikaela Hoover, he seems to stay at his comfort level when it comes to casting his projects.

However, there is one actor who gets the brunt of criticism for Gunn’s creative choice. His brother, Sean Gunn, has worked on almost every single one of Gunn’s films, resulting in many calling him a product of nepotism.
In fact, his DC co-star, Zachary Levi, even made a dig at him during an interview. Thankfully, Sean Gunn had the perfect explanation.

One of Mark Wahlberg’s best movies is all set to land on free streaming at the end of the year. Released back in 2016, the disaster movie Deepwater Horizon tells the true story of an explosion on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, and is one of the few movies that both critics and audiences completely agree on. Deepwater Horizon stands at 82% from both groups, with director Peter Berg’s disaster movie receiving praise for its gripping action and emotional thrills.
Berg worked from a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Matthew Sand, with Deepwater Horizon boasting an all-star cast that includes Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O'Brien, and Kate Hudson alongside Mark Wahlberg. The disaster action flick is due to land on Tubi on December 31, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

The Anaconda remake gets a new update from Paul Rudd and Jack Black, who unite for a video to reveal the film's release date. Released in 1997, Anaconda follows a National Geographic film crew as they are forced to work with an obsessed hunter to capture the world's largest snake. A sequel was released in 2004, followed by new installments in 2008 and 2009. After the franchise lay dormant for 15 years, it was confirmed this August that an Anaconda remake is on the way, with Black, Rudd, and Daniela Melchior all set to star.
Sony now shares a new video featuring Rudd and Black on the Anaconda remake's tropical-looking set, with the pair revealing that the film will hit theaters Christmas 2025. Though there's some confusion over whether the movie will be called "Anaconda" or "The Anaconda," Black does promise that "there's gonna be a big f--king snake." “According to sources,” The Hollywood Reporter details, “the new story involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth.
“They head to the rainforest only to find themselves into a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals.”

Christmas Day 2025 is bulking up in regards to product. Over the years, many hilarious comedy movies have actually underperformed at the box office. Even beloved classics like Office Space and Wet Hot American Summer completely flopped upon their original release, barely managing to recuperate their budget (if they were even able to do so at all). For a variety of reasons, many comedy movies fail to receive the love they deserve until later on.
Unfortunately, the past decade has seemed to continue this trend. Some of the most laugh-out-loud funny comedies have wound up being financial failures, despite consistently being able to get big laughs out of their viewers. Of course, the box office numbers are far from the most important indicator of a film's quality, especially when that film's primary goal is to make its viewers laugh. These recent comedy movies may have failed to attract huge audiences to the theater, but they don't fail to bring big laughs when they're needed most.

As co-president of DC Studios, James Gunn has (to borrow from the competition) great power and great responsibility. As DC fan, I appreciate that he's doing his part to boost the company's comic books. So many other superhero movie writers treat the comics as only raw material, but Gunn's got real passion for them.

You can see that earnest love in how deep he pulls from the comics. At Marvel Studios, Gunn elevated the Guardians of the Galaxy into the mainstream and made his fave Rocket Raccoon a household name. Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" was similarly filled with deep cuts from DC comic books. No one else would make a blockbuster starring characters like Peacemaker (John Cena), Ratcatcher (Daniela Melchior), and Polka-Dot Man.

Venom: The Last Dance continues to make its box office push, and the latest entry in Sony's Spider-Man Universe has already managed to surpass major Marvel and DC movies throughout its worldwide box office run. Venom: The Last Dance's ending seems to put a pretty final point to Tom Hardy's Ssu franchise. That is okay, as Hardy's Venom movies achieved what they set out to do, becoming the most successful in Sony's Spider-Man Universe and being mostly enjoyed by moviegoers.
Based on the Ssu film's box office run, it seems like Venom: The Last Dance's symbiotes are still pursuing bigger things. The movie has already surpassed major releases from both Marvel and DC, with Venom: The Last Dance having the potential to overcome many more before it stops playing in theaters. The best Jessica Williams movies and TV shows are not deep in quantity, but they have been incredibly impressive in her short time as an actress. Williams actually got her start as a teenager when she first appeared on the Nickelodeon television series Just for Kicks in 2006 when she was only 17. This soon led to her big break when she joined the cast of The Daily Show in 2012, which was huge for her since she was only 22 when she signed on there, the youngest correspondent ever on that news show.
It didn't take long after that for the world of Hollywood to come calling. While she was still young and had little to no acting experience, she signed on for some movies and TV shows and ended up carving out a role as an actress. Sylvester Stallone's ongoing role as Dwight Manfredi in Tulsa King is his funniest character since his 2021 superhero movie. Though Tulsa King sees Dwight building and maintaining a criminal empire as a mob boss, it also has more than its fair share of comedic moments. The cast of Tulsa King is extremely capable of telling good jokes, but one actor stands out among the rest: Sylvester Stallone. His ability to garner laughs and steal a comedic scene is really impressive and surprising, but his talent for comedies isn't completely unprecedented.
Stallone has done his fair share of comedies in the past, from kids movies like Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over to more mature comedies like Oscar. Neither of those films were particularly well received, though, and he mostly shied away from comedy throughout his career in favor of actioners like Rambo, Rocky, and The Expendables. The classic 1990s monster movie Anaconda is returning with a new remake, but this time it is envisioned as a meta comedy. The 1997 original starred Jennifer Lopez as a documentary filmmaker who travels deep into the jungles of South America in search of a lost tribe of indigenous people who live there. Unfortunately, the crew gets more than they bargained for when they encounter a dangerous criminal (played by Jon Voight) and a massive man-eating snake. Though cheesy and critically panned, Anaconda certainly has its place in the poorly-defined horror landscape of the 1990s.

We’ve got hold of a few more details of the new Anaconda movie, with slight spoilers – and new casting information too.
Potential spoilers lie ahead for the new Anaconda.
Sony is investing more and more in its planned reboot of the Anaconda movie series, which continues to take shape.
Debuting in 1997 – with Jon Voight’s sneer and a massive snake, all under the watchful eye of director Luis Llosa – Anaconda was a solid hit. Still, its subsequent sequels and crossovers never troubled the inside of a cinema.
However, the new reboot – which has been active since early 2020 – is heading for the big screen, and has attracted a notably comic cast.
Jack Black and Paul Rudd were early additions, and joining now is Daniela Melchior in what Deadline reports is in an ‘unknown’ role. We’ve got a bit of info on that, however.

In the wake of three sequels and a spinoff crossover film with the Lake Placid franchise, the 1997 film Anaconda is plotting a return to the screen. Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) is scripting and directing the next Anaconda movie for Columbia Pictures, with Paul Rudd and Jack Black starring.
Additionally, Deadline reports tonight that rising star Daniela Melchior has come on board to join the horror reboot’s cast.
“According to sources,” The Hollywood Reporter detailed, “the new story involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth.

The original 1997 thriller starred Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube and followed a National Geographic-esque film crew that is taken hostage by an insane hunter, who forces them along on his quest to capture the world’s largest and deadliest snake, an anaconda. The film overperformed at the box office, bringing in $145 million globally including $65 million domestically. It also provided Lopez and Cube with a box office hit early in their careers.
