Internet icon Benito Skinner Aka Benny Drama is making his TV debut with semi-autobiographical comedy series “Overcompensating.”
Skinner writes, executive produces, and stars in the college-set Prime Video series that boasts a who’s who of legendary co-stars. Connie Britton and Kyle MacLachlan appear in the show, with Charli Xcx serving as the executive music producer and guest star. The official synopsis reads: “‘Overcompensating’ is a college-set ensemble comedy about the wild, chaotic journey of Benny (Skinner), a closeted former football player and Idaho homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen, a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs. With guidance from Benny’s older sister and her campus-legend boyfriend, Benny and Carmen juggle horrible hookups, flavored vodka, and fake IDs. Deeply funny and personal, the show explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while on the path to finding out who we really are.

Writer-director Nastasya Popov’s feature debut is a hilariously heartfelt reminder that immigrants make America (and cinema) great.
In the earnest comedy-drama Idiotka, Anna Baryshnikov plays Margarita Levlansky, a budding fashion designer living with her grandmother, father and brother in a tiny apartment in West Hollywood, “not the fancy part, the Russian part.”
With her family five months behind on rent, Margarita lands a spot on Slay, Serve, Survive, a new fashion competition series whose producer Nicol (Camila Mendes) takes a shine to her adversity and potential screen presence. But the role requires her to open her life up to the world, baring all her family’s struggle for a shot at the American Dream.
The clever comedy-drama spotlights post-Soviet life in L.A.’s gay capital for Jews who “weren’t considered real Russians or Ukrainians.” It’s a particularly relevant piece of representation amid the ongoing strife with Russia,...

One of the predominant worries of our age is the desire to live authentically. There’s a profusion of technological developments and variables — now extending to artificial intelligence — that both help and hamstring us from achieving this, with much neurosis and self-consciousness brought on if we can’t. The 2010s and the ongoing Trump era have also intensified the clamor for identity politics, where a sometimes fragile sense of empowerment is gained by asserting difference in the face of mass American conformity.
So, the faux-inspirational outcome is that we must embrace our truth, and “Slay, Serve, and Survive,” to reference the in-film reality show contest in Nastasya Popov’s SXSW premiere “Idiotka.” Premiering in the non-competitive Narrative Spotlight section, Popov’s upbeat and genial comedy capably interrogates these ideas, with its tale of a young, aspiring LA fashion designer (from a Russian emigré background not unlike the director’s own...

But there’s a twist … gaining access to the yacht’s extravagant amenities won’t be so simple. As the journey unfolds, romance ignites; alliances form; and hearts are shattered. In the end, only one couple will reign supreme. Who will rise to the top, and who will be left stranded?”
Cooper launched the Unwell Network in Aug. 2023 and signed Alix Earle and Madeline Argy before later adding Harry Jowsey, Owen Thiele, Hallie Batchelder and Grace O’Malley to the team. But Earle was dropped from the network last month.

Sabrina Carpenter stopped by The Late Show to promote her new holiday special, A Nonsense Christmas, and to discuss her six Grammy nominations. During the conversation with host Stephen Colbert, the pop singer recalled hearing the Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon” for the first time as a child and immediately falling head over heels for Paul McCartney.
After downing an espresso martini, Carpenter told Colbert that she has always wanted to be a singer and that writing a song is her favorite thing to do. “Is it true the Beatles inspired you...

Sabrina Carpenter does have the same initials as Santa Claus, so it only makes sense that she would have a musical comedy holiday special with guest stars on Netflix. The singer’s 50-minute segment, A Nonsense Christmas With Sabrina Carpenter, streaming as of the evening of Friday, Dec. 6 contained several familiar faces, both musically and in the comedy and acting worlds.
Sadly, there was no sign of Marcello Hernández’s Domingo, but Nico Hiraga played an impressive modern day Ebenezer “Ebby” Scrooge. Carpenter performed musical duets with powerhouse singers Tyla, Shania Twain, Kali Uchis and Chappell Roan while she acted alongside Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne, Kyle Mooney, Megan Stalter, Sean Astin, Owen Thiele and Jillian Bell.
She was pitched several “Nonsense” outtros that ranged from bad to “not the worst.” She sang several songs from her holiday EP “Fruitcake” in addition to some Christmas classics like “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,...

Ben added, “Finally, on Sunday, we had the wedding proper at Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Noah was sad that nobody used the Ikea ferry to get there…”

Owen Thiele’s life story is coming to Amazon.
The retail giant/streamer is developing Off Color, a semi-autobiographical comedy created by and starring Theater Camp breakout Thiele.
Off Color is based on Thiele’s unconventional adopted family. The comedy is about a son who doesn’t want to grow up, a mother who has no intention of letting him, and a dad who’s probably faking a nap in the other room so he doesn’t have to engage.”

For every blockbuster, there is a smaller independent film filling screens. Those smaller films start at festivals like The Sundance Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. Ben Platt and Molly Gordon’s mockumentary Theater Camp sold to Searchlight Pictures for $8 million dollars. Theater Camp tells a funny and heartfelt story of an eccentric staff of the rundown theater camp AdirondACTS in upstate New York. When the beloved founder Joan (Amy Sedaris) falls into a coma, her misfit, bro-y son Troy (Jimmy Tatro) tries to run the camp.
When Troy arrives, he does not receive a very warm welcome. He simply does not fit into this musical world. As he attempts to adapt and hire new staff (Ayo Edebiri), the current members try to have a great summer. This involves the counselor’s and best friends, Amos (Ben Platt) and Rebecca-Diane (Molly Gordon), attempting to write the yearly “end-of-summer” musical.
