Olivia Metzger’s client list is a who’s who of some of the biggest names in broadcast journalism: MSNBC president Rashida Jones, “CNN This Morning” anchor Poppy Harlow, newly named host of “Meet the Press” Kristen Welker, CNN senior legal affairs correspondent Paula Reid and Fox News’ Ben Hall, who was recently gravely injured while covering Ukraine and now a New York Times bestselling author.

Mickey Reece's new film, Country Gold, will have its world permiere at Fantasia this Summer. The first teaser for his surreal comedy debuted yesterday. Check it out below. Reece has become a favorite of ours with his two recent films, Climate of the Hunter and Agnes. They both became instant and sought after favorites on the festival circuit each year and this one looks like it will carry on with the same head of steam. It doesn't hurt when you film it in glorious black and white either. Cannot wait to check this out. Set in 1994, Country Gold stars Reece as Troyal Brux, an up-and-coming country singer who is invited by country music legend George Jones (Ben Hall) for a night...

Film festival favorite Mickey Reece (“Agnes”) is back with another genre-bending character piece, “Country Gold,” and TheWrap has an exclusive look at the first trailer for the film.
Described as a “surrealist comedy by way of a music film,” “Country Gold” takes place in 1994, starring Reece as an up-and-coming country singer who is invited by country music legend George Jones (Ben Hall) for a night on the town in Nashville – the night before George is to be cryogenically frozen.
Of course, as with most of Reece’s films — “Country Gold” is his 29th feature — he doesn’t come at the genre angle straight on, and the teaser promises something a bit more unexpected, quiet and character-focused than the sci-fi shenanigans that the synopsis might spring to mind. Watch the teaser trailer above and soak up the strange vibes.

A current of loneliness runs through Danny Cohen’s beautifully haunting Anonymous Club, a rich documentary filmed in 16mm chronicling little more than a year in the life of singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett. Those familiar with Barnett’s music know it ranges from the empowering, like her international hit “Pedestrian At Best” (“Put me on a pedestal and I’ll only disappoint you”), to her latest single “If I Don’t Hear From You Tonight,” which represents the new direction Barnett is exploring as she attempts to slow down in her 30s.
Rising to stardom from 2012-2015, Barnett, like Billie Eilish, recorded her first album in her bedroom and released it online. Cohen’s cameras arrive in 2018 just as Barnett is winding down a whirlwind tour of festivals, arena shows, and international TV appearances supporting her album Tell Me How You Really Feel. Through it she candidly wonders what’s next...

With unprecedented, intimate access to the private life of Courtney Barnett, Danny Cohen’s 16mm feature documentary Anonymous Club follows a paradoxically introverted performer and anti-influencer, who, at the height of success, is ready to walk away.
Recording her innermost thoughts on a Dictaphone over a period of three years, Barnett begins her slow acceptance of Cohen’s camera.
Cohen has been collaborating with Barnett for many years on her music videos, and spent three years on tour in Europe, the US and Asia and at home in Melbourne filming with Barnett as a one-man crew.
Anonymous Club is produced by Philippa Campey and Samantha Dinning of Film Camp, with Glendyn Ivin story consultant and editor Ben Hall. Sue Maslin and Nick O’Byrne are executive producers.
It was financed via the Miff Premiere Fund, Film Victoria, Screen Australia, The Post Lounge, Mind The Gap Film Finance and Film Art Media,...

After giving us a unique twist on the vampire film in Climate of the Hunter, Mickey Reece and co-writer John Selvidge are back with Agnes, their take on demonic possession and evil doings in a convent. And while I knew this wasn’t going to be another nunsploitation film, I wasn’t expecting just what it delivers.
Sister Agnes is a young nun in an out-of-the-way convent of Saint Theresa. Her behaviour has been most troubling lately, foaming at the mouth, swearing at, and even attacking her fellow nuns. When Mother Superior (Mary Buss; Camp Cold Brook) asks for help she’s sent Father Donaghue an exorcist whom the diocese is looking for an excuse to excommunicate and his protege Ben.

Mama’s in the slammer but she’s running the show in “Ida Red,” a proficiently made crime family drama that sees director John Swab return to his Oklahoma roots. Consciously seeking to emulate action/crime films by Michael Mann, William Friedkin and others, Swab strives so hard to deliver a similar product that his film has no distinctive DNA, and the flawed script wears its influences rather conspicuously, with significant nods to James Gray’s oeuvre, “Animal Kingdom” and any number of Ma Barker offspring.
Headlining Josh Hartnett, with Melissa Leo and Frank Grillo returning to the director’s fold, the film premiered in Locarno’s Piazza Grande section on the heels of Swab’s “Body Brokers” this past February. Good performances and a plot that generally holds the attention could draw audiences, yet success for this Saban Films acquisition will very much depend on finding ways to distinguish...

In Agnes, a cynical priest and young novice approaching his vows are called to investigate rumors of demonic possession within a convent. What occurs within those walls will call forward temptations, doubt, and a true test of faith. Agnes is written and directed by Mickey Reece and stars Ben Hall (Climate of the Hunter), Jake Horowitz (The Vast of Night), and Hayley McFarland.
It is with the utmost disappointment that I report that Agnes is far from being the religious horror that audiences may be hoping for. If what you’re looking for is the expected beats of a demonic possession à la The Devils, you will be sorely disappointed. And confused. The trouble with Agnes extends beyond its failing to deliver a solid possession horror, but that it seems to have rolled two movies into one rather ineffectively.

"I'm terrified of death... but I'm even more terrified of being alone." Ha. Dark Star Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Climate of the Hunter, from filmmaker Mickey Reece. It's described as a "critically acclaimed indie auteur Mickey Reece’s award-winning and super stylish vampire feature" and a "gloriously quirky cinematic feat" in reviews. This premiered at Fantastic Fest last year, and it played at a few other genre festivals this year. Two sisters vie for the affections of a man who may or may not be a vampire. Reconnecting after nearly 20 years apart, the two sisters soon discover the truth about their friend Wesley – he could be a vampire. Of course he is! Who are we kidding!? Climate of the Hunter stars Ginger Gilmartin, Mary Buss, Ben Hall, and Jacob Ryan Snovel. This looks like a clever indie twist on the usual "is he a vampire?...

Hugh Keays-Byrne, most known for appearing as Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road and Toecutter in the original 1979 Mad Max film, has died. He was 73.
Reps for the actor said he died peacefully on Tuesday morning. Director Brian Trenchard-Smith, who collaborated with Keays-Byrn on The Dragon Flies, paid tribute and confirmed the death on Wednesday.
“Hugh had a generous heart, offering a helping hand to people in need, or a place to stay to a homeless teenager. He cared about social justice and preserving the environment long before these issues became fashionable. His life was governed by his sense of the oneness of humanity. We will miss his example and his friendship. Vale, Hugh,” Trenchard-Smith wrote in his Facebook post, which can be viewed below.
Born in 1947 in Kashmir, India, Keays-Bryne kicked off his acting career in Australia, where he earned his first credits in the 19687 TV series Bellbird,...

Last weekend, the 2020 Nightstream Film Festival offered genre fans a ton of amazing online offerings to enjoy throughout its four-day festivities. Here’s a look at two of the films I had the opportunity to check out during Nightstream: Mandibles from Quentin Dupieux and Mickey Reece’s Climate of the Hunter.
Mandibles: While I haven’t had the opportunity to check out Deerskin just yet (which also began making the festival rounds), as a big fan of his work on the blissfully absurd Rubber, I had a sneaking suspicion that I was going to enjoy Quentin Dupieux’s Mandibles immensely, and it did not disappoint. Made in the same spirit of all those slapstick ’80s comedies of errors that so many of us grew up loving, Mandibles is a delightfully offbeat tale of two friends who come across a giant oversized fly and set out to domesticate it in...

Sisters Alma (Ginger Gilmartin), something of a hippie-free spirit, and Elizabeth (Mary Buss), a D.C. lawyer who's wound a little tight, are at their family's old cabin in the backwoods, perhaps trying to reconnect with each other, but their bond is both close and grating for both of them, in their different styles and appraoches to life. Into their bristling yet caring relationship walks Wesley (Ben Hall), an old family friend, who has been living in Paris, and also returned to his family's old cabin. As the three meet and reminisce over dinner, and spend the ensuing days in each other's strange company, Alma begins to suspect that Wesley is a vampire, and she might need to kill him to protect her family. This might...

If you’re a fan of the 70s and vampires, I’ve got a trailer here for you to watch for an indie horror thriller called Climate of the Hunter. The film is set in the 1970s and is centered around two sisters who are trying to win over the affection of a man who may or may not be a vampire.
As you’ll see, the film has a certain style and tone that gives it the same kind of vibe as some of the vampire horror films that were made in the 70s. It looks like a interesting and weird flick, but I’d watch it. Here’s the synopsis:
Two sisters, Alma & Elizabeth, along with a dog who's described as a "philosopher," have come to Alma's remote house to reconnect with Wesley after twenty years. Alma is recently divorced, Elizabeth is a workaholic in Washington, D.C.

"Mom, you're alone out here." "Then I better get prepared." Xyz Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Climate of the Hunter, the latest feature from prolific indie filmmaker Mickey Reece. Set in the late 1970s, two middle-aged sisters vie for the affection of a man from their past who may or may not be a vampire. This just premiered at Fantastic Fest this month, but doesn't have a release yet. Starring Ginger Gilmartin, Mary Buss, Ben Hall, Jacob Snovel, Laurie Cummings, Sheridan McMichael, and Danielle Evon Ploeger. Climate of the Hunter, according to Reece's local online newspaper The Oklahoman, is described as "a visual interpretation of The Jesus and Mary Chain's 1985 debut album, Psychocandy." This looks super low budget and just plain weird. Perhaps exactly the kind a film some of you are looking for. Have fun. Here's the first official trailer (+ ...

BBC-backed Original Talent has bought into Tavistock Wood, the talent agency that globally reps a raft of big-name stars, and together the new partners have launched Open Book, a U.K.-based production company that will create drama projects with agency clients. Its first series in development include an Emily Mortimer-penned adaptation of Nancy Mitford novel “The Pursuit of Love.”
Original Talent was formed in 2016 with the backing of BBC Studios. It is the parent company of Curtis Brown, one of Europe’s largest agencies, with Margaret Atwood and John Le Carre among its literary clients, and “McMafia” producer Cuba Pictures.
It has taken a significant stake in Angharad Wood and Charles Collier’s Tavistock Wood, which will continue to operate autonomously and remain in its current Central London offices. That is in line with Original Talent’s federal structure, whereby its different divisions retain their individual identities.
