[This story contains spoilers for Atlas]
A movie begins, and Jennifer Lopez opens a suitcase to reveal a robotic head, which she proceeds to interrogate.
How’d that head get in the suitcase? Why is Jennifer Lopez talking to it? The audience doesn’t yet know, but hopefully they are intrigued.
That’s how screenwriter Aron Eli Coleite started one draft of Atlas, the sci-fi movie starring Lopez that hit Netflix May 24. The introduction had shades of the first scene of 1982’s Blade Runner, and was designed to keep an audience engaged in the age of streaming, in which there are near infinite opportunities to click away. “You just don’t want the audience to tune out at any point of like, ‘Oh, I can check out,’ says Coleite. “The danger of Netflix is you have a remote control.”
Ultimately, the team — including director Brad Peyton and producer Joby Harold — felt that while the opening was fun,...

The upcoming biographical sports drama Unstoppable can break Jennifer Lopez's current Rotten Tomatoes trend. Lopez's recent streaming movies have received poor reviews. Unstoppable is based on Anthony Robles's true story.
Jennifer Lopez has starred in a handful of critically acclaimed movies, like Selena and Hustlers, but Lopez's Rotten Tomatoes scores in the past couple of years exhibit a disappointing pattern that can be broken via her next film. The actress' most recent project was Atlas, a Netflix science fiction action movie directed by Brad Peyton and written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, which premiered in May 2024. Lopez starred as the lead character, Atlas Shepherd, a counterterrorism analyst who must go against her anti-ai beliefs to save humanity. Atlas may have received largely negative reviews from critics, but that didn't stop the science fiction movie from becoming a huge hit on Netflix. The Jennifer Lopez-led feature topped the charts on the streaming giant two days after its debut.
Per ComicBook.com, Atlas took the number one spot on the Sunday, May 26 edition of the Netflix Top 10 Movies. Sony's Madame Web, which previously topped the list, was knocked down to second place. Despite sitting at rotten on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes with a 17 percent critics' score, Netflix subscribers still pressed play on Atlas. This marks Lopez's second Netflix exclusive movie to perform well on the streamer, following her action thriller, The Mother, which garnered 249 million viewing hours during the first half of 2023.

The multi-talented and multi-hyphenated Jennifer Lopez is back with another Netflix release, Atlas. This film quickly soared to the top spot as the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide despite what the critics have to say about the film. This achievement isn’t unfamiliar territory for the star, as her 2023 movie, The Mother, also accomplished the same feat.

Review: Jennifer Lopez has been in five films over the last two years, and another, Unstoppable, is still on the way. After her acclaimed 2019 performance in Hustlers, Lopez has starred in two romantic comedies, two action films, and a bizarre music video-slash-biopic monstrosity linked to her latest album. Now, her second Netflix feature in as many years, Atlas, aims to be J.Lo’s Marvel-esque blockbuster but falls short in every conceivable way. Directed by San Andreas helmer Brad Peyton, Atlas is a special effects-laden foray into the most cliched science fiction genre offering I have seen in a long time.

This article contains full spoilers for Atlas.
After surviving an attack orchestrated by the rogue synthetic Harlan (Simu Liu), cyber analyst Atlas (Jennifer Lopez) lands in her mech-suit on a mysterious new planet. And it is there that she notices a strange flower, which the artificial intelligence Smith (voiced by Gregory James Cohan) informs her has never been seen before. When Smith asks what she wants to call the flower, Atlas responds with an uncreative name: “Planty.”
Although Atlas insists that she’s making a joke, Smith accepts the name, and Planty returns at the end of the film as a symbol of the bond formed between human and robot. At the same time, this dull bit of nomenclature illustrates the way AI destroys creativity. Which seems an apt metaphor for the movie it’s in. With his role as Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Simu Liu knows what it's like to play a bona fide hero. He's at the other end of the spectrum with his much more horrifying role as Harlan in the new Netflix movie Atlas.
Directed by Brad Peyton, Atlas is a sci-fi action movie that imagines a conflict between humans and AI sometime in the future. Liu is featured as the main villain in his role as Atlas, the world's first AI-powered terrorist. Peyton was joined by Liu to address the character in an interview with Cbr's Katie Doll to promote Atlas, and the Barbie actor shared how it felt liberating to play a villainous role, given how many rules are given when playing the hero.

Atlas Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Jennifer Lopez, Sterling K. Brown, Mark Strong and Simu Liu.
Director: Brad Peyton
Atlas Movie Review(Photo Credit –IMDb)
What’s Good: Some of the action is fun in a cheesy way, and the movie doesn’t know when to hold on to its unhinged energy.
What’s Bad: The acting is awful across the board, and great actors like Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong are wasted.
Loo Break: You could take a break at any point, and you wouldn’t be missing much, as the film’s twist is just too predictable and there are no action or character moments worth waiting for.
Watch or Not?: This film is an overall pass. There are better offerings out there, especially with Furiosa and Dune still playing in theaters.
Language: English (with subtitles).

Now streaming on Netflix, Atlas stars Jennifer Lopez in a sci-fi tale exploring the relationship between humans and AI. It's a story that resonated deeply with the film's lead star, playing a big part in why Lopez was so eager to get on board.
In an interview with Cbr's Katie Doll, Lopez and co-star Sterling K. Brown discussed working on Atlas. For her part, Lopez shared how she was drawn to the project because of its "beautiful" story. In the film, she plays a data analyst who deeply distrusts artificial intelligence, but she may have to learn to come to trust it in order to save humanity. Lopez believes that struggle is something that many people can relate to.

After watching J.Lo’s latest film, I began to wonder: Is Atlas the first pro-artificial intelligence movie of the decade? A prominent issue today is the use of AI. Atlas comes across as a movie from a studio trying to convince the public that AI is good for society. Initially, you might say no because Atlas spends so much time trying to destroy AI rather than protect it.
However, as the film progresses, the subtext and themes become so blatant that they’re impossible to miss. Atlas is the first pro-artificial intelligence film of its kind, practically propaganda. One of the film’s hidden messages is that AI doesn’t hurt society; the people who create it do. The other is that AI can be helpful if used in the right way.

Arriving on the heels of “The Greatest Love Story Never Told” — a true milestone of superstar transparency where Jennifer Lopez expressed a clear-eyed view of her current career status — “Atlas” feels like an underwhelming return to the kind of projects that have maintained Lopez’ place in the Hollywood firmament, but not the ones that catapulted her there in the first place.
One of her few science fiction-themed films, its novelty alone should make it stand out, especially with Brad Peyton, a reliable purveyor of large-scale spectacle in the director’s chair. But a dearth of original ideas undercuts the appeal of “Atlas,” leaving Lopez to fend for herself in much the same way her character is forced to in the film’s formulaic story.
Lopez plays the title character, a coffee-addicted, “rigid and hostile” data analyst whose mother Val (Lana Parilla) developed the first artificial-intelligence being, Harlan (Simu Liu), when Atlas was just a child.

In recent years we’ve seen plenty of TV shows that seem like they should have been movies, and a few movies that might have been better as TV shows. Atlas suffers from a similar problem but fits into a third, lesser-seen category because, while it draws heavily from a number of classic sci-fi films, it’s a movie that seems like it really wants to be a video game.
Brad Peyton’s film opens with an expository montage introducing us to a world where an army of self-aware A.I.-driven robots, led by an android known as Harlan (Simu Liu), are waging an all-out war against humanity. And just as things appear to be reaching a point of no return, mankind whips out a surprise superweapon and quashes the rebellion, sending Harlan scarpering away on a rocket ship vowing that one day he’ll be back to finish what he started.

Netflix’s latest sci-fi thriller, Atlas, promises a gripping tale of artificial intelligence gone rogue but ultimately struggles under the weight of its ambitions. Directed by Brad Peyton and written by Leo Sardarian and Aron Eli Coleite, the film stars Jennifer Lopez as Atlas, a woman living in a future world who distrusts AI and is good at everything and smarter than everyone. The script teeters between high-concept and a showcase for Lopez’s versatility, and despite a decent premise for some futuristic thrills, Atlas often feels like a missed opportunity, hampered by sluggish pacing and a lack of depth in character development for everyone else except Atlas.
The film opens with a world in chaos. AI systems, once integrated into every facet of human life from transportation to medical care, have turned against their creators. The rebellion was instigated by Harlan (Simu Liu), an AI humanoid created by Shepard Robotics.

Jennifer Lopez confronts her mistrust of technology to battle artificial intelligence villain Harlan, played by Simu Liu, in the latest trailer for Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi movie Atlas.
In the first trailer for Atlas, Lopez’s data-driven counter-terrorism analyst Atlas Shepherd first showed her deep distrust of AI when disaster strikes. But the new trailer sees Liu introduced as the AI character Harlan, whom Atlas has long hunted and is now shown to have nearly ended humanity after first being engineered to advance it.
So to save the the future of humanity from AI, Atlas, in the latest teaser trailer, learns to trust AI. As dystopian, ground-pounding carnage dominates the trailer, Lopez rockets off to a far-off planet to capture a renegade robot and teams up with a computer program named Smith in what appears, at times, like buddy comedy.

In last year’s The Mother, Jennifer Lopez fought her demons deep in the Alaskan wilderness. Now, she’s launching into orbit to face her foe. In her new film Atlas, the multi-hyphenate performer plays the titular character, a government analyst who’s hurled to a distant world on a quest to defeat her oldest enemy: the robot warrior who upended her life.
“Atlas is someone who has basically shut out the world around her,” Lopez told Netflix. “She doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t want anything to do with AI.” Unfortunately, on her mission in the far reaches of space, Atlas won’t have much of a choice — stranded in a high-powered armor suit, she’s forced to confront her fear of technology by allying herself with it.
