Exclusive: Deadline has the first trio of stills from Hallow Road, the new psychological thriller from BAFTA winner Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow), which stars Golden Globe and Emmy winner Rosamund Pike (Saltburn) and Emmy winner Matthew Rhys (Saturday Night).

In the film, marking the first produced script by William Gillies, two parents enter a race against time when they receive a distressing late-night phone call from their daughter after she caused a tragic car accident.

We were first to report on the project, shot in Ireland and Prague, in November 2023. It was commissioned and developed by Lndn, which produced alongside Anvari’s Two & Two Pictures and XYZ Films. Lucan Toh of Two & Two Pictures produced alongside Ian Henry of London Film & TV and Richard Bolger of Hail Mary Pictures. XYZ Films and Screen Ireland co-financed.

Movie fans likely already have subscriptions to streaming sites like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. Those who love horror have to make room in the budget for Shudder. Beta testing for Shudder began in the summer of 2015, and back then there were only a handful of titles available to watch. Now, Shudder is more popular than ever with over 1 million subscribers as of 2023.

Shudder has become a household name not only because of its library of classic and foreign horror films but also for its original content. There were many incredible Shudder originals released in 2024, not limited to Oddity, In a Violent Nature, and Late Night with the Devil. Meanwhile, two other films, MadS and Azrael starring Samara Weaving, are due for release on the platform later this month. Some of these movies are stronger than others, but each is worthwhile viewing for any horror aficionado.

Naamani joins from the management company Rain, where he spent four and a half years building a diverse, multicultural list of next generation filmmakers and writers. In his new role, he will continue to help spearhead the development of diverse emerging talent in the entertainment industry, reporting to ColorCreative President Talitha Watkins.

History of Evil is a movie directed by Bo Mirhosseni, set in a dystopian future America in the year 2045. America is seen as a mess with lots of fighting and corruption. It’s degenerated into a strict religious government with a fascist police force that controls everything. Regular people are fed up with this torment and decide to start a revolutionary group called The Resistance to fight back against their barbaric policies. One member of that group, named Alegre Dyer, escapes jail by taking help from a guard, as she was locked up there by the ruling government for writing a book against these policies and was called a terrorist. She also meets with her daughter, Daria, and her husband, Ron, who later hide in a faraway, safe place from the police. But little did they know their new hideout had a dark past, with a creepy and ominous presence...

Hiding from an oppressive and deadly new government in the near future, a family takes refuge in a secluded safe house only to find that a supernatural threat from within its walls may be even more dangerous than the hateful humans hunting them outside in the new movie History of Evil. Written and directed by Bo Mirhosseni, History of Evil is now streaming on Shudder, and Daily Dead caught up with Bo in a new video interview to discuss how he was inspired by his parents' human rights activism during the Iranian revolution, the lessons he learned while making his first feature film, blending two distinctly different genres, and collaborating with an amazing cast that includes Paul Wesley (who was also one of the executive producers on the movie), Jackie Cruz, and Murphee Bloom.

Two years have gone by since it was announced that Paul Wesley (The Vampire Diaries) had signed on to star in the horror thriller History of Evil for writer/director Bo Mirhosseni. At the time, Stephanie Beatriz was attached to star in the film as well, but when she had to drop out of the project, she was replaced by Jackie Cruz of Orange Is the New Black and Tremors: Shrieker Island. Shudder recently announced their lineup of programming for the month of February. Simone Scafidi's documentary, Dario Argento Panico, kicks off the month next Friday. Christina Hendricks of the TV shows Mad Men and Good Girls has signed on to star in the psychological thriller Reckoner, Deadline reports. Based on a short story by author Rachel Ingalls, Reckoner will mark the feature directorial debut of Nissar Modi, who previously wrote the 2013 horror film Breaking at the Edge and the 2015 sci-fi film Z for Zachariah.

The story of Reckoner centers on an affluent woman whose carefully constructed life is disrupted by a young man connected to a tightly-held secret from her past. I’m not familiar with the source material, but the story sounds interesting to me, and Christina Hendricks is always a good addition to a cast.

Christina Hendricks will lead the psychological thriller “Reckoner,” which will be sold at the Cannes Film Festival this month.

The project is written and directed by Nissar Modi (“Z for Zacharian”), who will be making his big screen directorial debut.

In the film, an affluent woman’s carefully constructed life is disrupted by a young man connected to a tightly-held secret from her past.

The film is based on a short story by late writer Rachel Ingalls and will be produced by XYZ Films and Two & Two Pictures, with XYZ Films financing. XYZ Films has also added “Reckoner” to its New Visions slate of films, with world sales launching in Cannes.

The recently launched New Visions is designed to spotlight new voices alongside established talent that are striking a new path in the international space. “Reckoner” will be the first package in pre-production to run through the new slate.

The Vampire Diaries actor Paul Wesley co-stars in the feature, which as we reported earlier this year was pre-bought by AMC’s genre streamer Shudder for North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

We’re told Brooklyn Nine-Nine and In the Heights star Beatriz had to switch out before the film’s early May start due to scheduling conflicts.

It looks to be the feature film debut of Iranian-American filmmaker Bo Mirhosseni.    Beatriz is largely known for lighter roles in shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and the animated film Encanto.
