For his official directorial debut, Alex Garland found the on-set atmosphere of Ex Machina quite refreshing.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Garland and producer Andrew Macdonald looked back on their past work at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, including how Ex Machina kicked off Garland's filmmaking career a decade ago. "I never wanted to be a director," Garland confessed, explaining that his motive behind this career choice was "to stop directors from changing things and the only way to do that was by occupying that position [of director]." Nonetheless, he enjoyed the camaraderie that went into making his film, describing the cast as "young and very hard-working and very committed. We had a very friendly crew that believed in the project and was working as hard as they could. There was a good vibe, and everyone was pulling together. It was friendly."

Upgrade and Ex Machina both explore the potential dangers of AI at terrifying levels. Upgrade's ending, where Stem takes full control of Grey, is scarier than Ex Machina's. Stem's manipulation of a human host in Upgrade is a more chilling concept than Ava in Ex Machina.
Upgrade gives a terrifying look at a not-so-distant future where technology and AI have advanced to unimaginable levels, and its most horrifying element is very similar to one of Alex Garlands best movies, but it made it even scarier. Leigh Whannell has earned a spot in horror history as one of the creators of the Saw saga as well as a horror writer and director, and one of his most interesting and terrifying movies is Upgrade. Released in 2018, Upgrade was written and directed by Whannell, and it takes the audience to the year 2046 to meet Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green), an auto mechanic.

On March 27, 2024, A24 re-released its 2014 film, Ex Machina, in theaters for one night only. Today, A24 has become synonymous with artsy, highly conceptual films, many of which fall into the horror genre. Ex Machina stands out from other A24 films as a blend of science fiction and horror. However, the film focuses on a widespread sci-fi trope: AI becoming so self-aware that it gains its own sentience. For as long as the concept of artificial intelligence has existed, the science fiction genre has played with it in many ways.
Ex Machina is just one of many examples of films, television, and other storytelling mediums dipping their toes into the AI realm. One of the most infamous examples of a man-made AI going rogue is, of course, The Terminator franchise, but there are so many amazing examples of this fantastic sci-fi trope. Since the use of AI to replace artists, writers,...

Movies and TV shows centered on science fiction always toy with the possibility of humanity evolving or being wiped out by unstoppable forces, ranging from catastrophic weather events to extraterrestrial beings. A recurring theme in sci-fi movies and shows is AI, or artificial intelligence, which often focuses on robotic machines with human-like intelligence and emotive capabilities. While many popular works highlight the downfall of humanity due to AI, others explore a different possibility that allows humans and artificially intelligent beings to coexist.
Though it seems to have only grown in popularity in recent years, artificial intelligence in film and TV has been around for decades. Peacock's recently released sci-fi comedy-drama series "Mrs. Davis" follows a nun named Sister Simone (Betty Gilpin), who embarks on a global journey to destroy an evil AI named Mrs. Davis. Meanwhile, Netflix's "Black Mirror," which is set to premiere its sixth season on June...
