Director Stephen Kijak has made a string of documentaries that are focused on music, among them “We Are X,” “Jaco,” “Stones in Exile,” “Scott Walker: 30 Century Man” and “Sid & Judy.” That ought to mean that he’s got an understanding of the musical life – but more to the point for his new narrative film, “Shoplifters of the World,” it should mean that he has an understanding of fandom, too.
“Shoplifters of the World” may be titled after a song from the ’80s British band the Smiths, and it may play to a nonstop soundtrack of that and almost two dozen more songs from the Manchester-based maestros of morose, but it’s not a movie about the Smiths. It’s a movie about the fans, about what music can mean in the life of people who love it – as Fairuza Balk’s character, Sapphire, says in Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous,...

The Smiths are dead. That’s the news Cleo (Helena Howard) punctuates with a scream loud enough to wake everyone in Denver, Colorado but her own passed out drunk mother on the couch. So she drives to the one place she knows she’ll find a kindred spirit: the record store. Dean (Ellar Coltrane) is reading the news behind the counter as she walks in, the obvious air of depression looming above him before his boss (Thomas Lennon) stomps in to say that he needs to stop playing Morrissey and Marr’s music in memorialization since it’s always been too much of a downer. What he doesn’t realize that Cleo and Dean do, however, is that not everyone wants escapism from their art. Some seek an understanding that they aren’t alone.
That’s what this music gave a generation as its melodies became their home and saved...

When costumer Anna Terrazas was tasked with creating the look for National Geographic’s new series “Barkskins,” she set out to put her own stamp on the period drama.
The eight-episode series, based on the novel by Annie Proulx and shot in the woods of Quebec, examines 1690s New France and the mysterious massacre of settlers that occurred there. The series begins with the arrival of fictional characters René Sel (played by Christian Cooke) and Charles Duquet (James Bloor), both of whom are signed in servitude to Claude Trepagny (David Thewlis), a wealthy landowner who has only the grandest of visions for New France.
Rich landowners and First Nation settlers have been represented countless times on-screen, but Terrazas didn’t aim to copy those. She began by reading books and doing research online. “I wanted to be as period-accurate as possible,” she says, not only for authenticity but out of...

Like the settlers of New France, Elwood Reid has broken new ground.
Reid (The Bridge) is the creator, show-runner, and executive producer of Barkskins. The eight-hour limited series debuts starting at 9/8c Monday, May 25, on National Geographic Channel, with back-to-back episodes running for four consecutive Mondays.
Barkskins, based on the 2016 novel by Annie Proulx, marks NatGeo's entry into fiction-based scripted programming.
The 700-plus page epic tells about a mysterious massacre of settlers in the wilds of 1690s New France that threatens to throw the region into an all-out war.
Set in Wopik, a small settlement in what is now the Canadian province of Quebec, Barkskins weaves the tale of a disparate group of outcasts, rogues, and innocents caught up in a dangerous place and time.
Grabbing the opportunity to work with Proulx and executive director Scott Rudin was a no-brainer for Reid.

That’s because the character actor, who made his feature writing and directing debut on Acute Misfortune, has worked predominantly in international TV series and movies in the past six years.
Wright flies to Quebec next month for his next acting gig, a recurring role in Barskins, a National Geographic drama series based on the Annie Proulx novel about a group of outcasts living in New France — the part of North America controlled by the French — in the 16th century.

Exclusive: Former The Art of More star Christian Cooke and James Bloor (Dunkirk) have been cast as co-leads opposite David Thewlis in Barkskins, National Geographic’s scripted drama series based on the 2016 bestselling novel of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx. The series hails from Elwood Reid, Fox 21 TV Studios and National Geographic.
Proulx’s Barkskins spans over 300 years. It chronicles the deforestation of the New World from the arrival of Europeans into the contemporary era of global warming through the stories of two immigrants to New France, René Sel (Cooke) and Charles Duquet (Bloor), who work as wood-cutters — barkskins — and of their descendants.
Cooke’s René Sel is a strong willed, morally sound indentured servant, signed to Monsieur Claude Trepagny (Thewlis), a wealthy landowner with grand visions for New France.
Bloor’s Duquet is a scrappy, industrious scoundrel, also signed to servitude under Trepagny.

Donoghue will play Blair, Clay’s sexy, smart former girlfriend who hopes to rekindle their relationship. Koch is Julian, Clay’s childhood best friend who has forgone college to live as a free spirit — but that freedom is coming at a hard price.

Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury‘s Leatherface is yet another unique interpretation of Texas Chainsaw tonality. This is the beginnings of evil; a moody dive behind the monster’s mask. After The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 introduced a colorful misery, after roadkill grindhouse turned darkly comical, after 2003’s “gritty, dark reboot.” The filmmakers behind Inside, Livide and Among The Living use Seth M. Sherwood’s screenplay to explore what could drive one child to his slaughterhouse obsession – with mixed results. As a Southern-strong franchise entry, it’s certainly not the worst (cough – Texas Chainsaw 3D – cough). But as a Bustillo and Maury product? Well, let’s just say we’ve seen them be more aggressive, better inspired and vastly richer when developing human characteristics.
Sherwood’s tale opens on a celebratory gathering. Verna Sawyer (Lili Taylor) presents a young Jed Saywer (Boris Kabakchiev) with his first chainsaw. Happy birthday! Jed...

Halloween 2017 has been steeped in a very potent blend of nostalgia.
Not only is the second season of Stranger Things due to premiere via Netflix, but on the big screen, horror fans will be flocking to see Jigsaw and Leatherface, two very different continuations to two very different, yet equally terrifying franchises.
On the one hand, Jigsaw will begin a new murderous spiel on October 20th, with all signs pointing to John Kramer returning in some shape or form, whereas Leatherface is all about the origin story behind Tobe Hooper’s famous Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Widely considered to be one of the most influential horror films of the ’80s – if not all time – Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s nightmarish prequel is walking in the footsteps of greatness and today, we have a brand new clip for you to feast on ahead of the film’s imminent premiere. Liosngate has debuted a new clip for Leatherface, which delves into the origins of the title character at the heart of the gruesome events portrayed in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This new clip gives us our first look at Verna Sawyer, the mother of the child that will eventually become the title character, along with a vindictive Texas Ranger named Hal Hartman (Stephen Dorff). It's clear that Verna and Hal have quite a bit of history.
The clip debuted on Yahoo! Movies, just as this movie becomes available in an exclusive early window for DirecTV subscribers starting today, before the movie hits theaters October 20. The clip shows Verna angrily confronting this Texas Ranger, who has one of her young sons locked up in the back of his squad car. Verna protests that he has no right to do that, when the Ranger explains that the young boy isn't actually under arrest,...

So, here’s the thing: going into Leatherface, I was primed to love it, despite not being a huge fan of Texas Chainsaw 3D (whose only saving grace was giving us the endlessly quotable line, “Do your thing, cuz!”). I’ll never write off a beloved franchise when I’m not crazy about a particular sequel—after all, if I had done that, I may never have fallen in love with Wes Craven’s New Nightmare or went bananas for Jason Lives. And for the most part, I was on board for Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s exploration of the Sawyer family’s demented dynamics, despite the fact that Leatherface feels like two-thirds The Devil’s Rejects and one-third Natural Born Killers.
But then, the film takes such an egregious misstep in the film’s third act that I completely checked out on Leatherface, and it left me wondering...

"The massacre begins..." Lionsgate has revealed a third official trailer for the horror prequel Leatherface, telling the origin of the evil man who would become known as "Leatherface". If you're still not sold on this horror, maybe one more trailer will do the trick? (I doubt it.) But fire it up anyway. This is the long-awaited prequel to Tobe Hooper's original horror classic, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre from 1974. Just incase you needed an origin story. In this film, Jessica Madsen plays one of four inmates from a mental hospital - the other three played by Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, and James Bloor. They kidnap a nurse, Vanessa Grasse, and take her on a "road trip from hell." The full cast also includes Stephen Dorff, Lili Taylor, and Julian Kostov. With the DirecTV debut of Leatherface lurking right around the corner, you can practically hear the chainsaws churning. To help hold fans over just a little bit longer, Lionsgate released a new poster for the film that features the ominous Sawyer homestead on the horizon.
Directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (2007's Inside, aka À l'intérieur), Leatherface stars Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, James Bloor, Vanessa Grasse, Stephen Dorff (looking to go full vengeance mode à la Dennis Hopper in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2), and Lili Taylor as Verna Sawyer.
Leatherface will be released on September 21st on DirecTV, followed by a limited theatrical and full VOD release by Lionsgate on October 20th.
"In Texas, years before the events of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, in the early days of the infamous Sawyer family, the youngest child is sentenced to a mental hospital after a suspicious incident leaves the sheriff’s daughter dead.

With less than a week left before Leatherface will be available for DirecTV subscribers, and a month before the theatrical release, Lionsgate has debuted a new poster, which gives us our first look at the character who will eventually become the sadistic killer known as Leatherface. This one-sheet comes just a month after a particularly gruesome Leatherface trailer, which adds to the mystery of just who Leatherface really is. The poster doesn't reveal any obvious details, but shows the title character walking towards the Sawyer home, with a bloody chainsaw in hand.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this Leatherface prequel surfaced last May, when a new Leatherface photo revealed Jessica Madsen's character, one of the four teenagers who escaped from a mental hospital and kidnapped a nurse. Since one of these characters will ultimately be revealed as the true Leatherface, there is technically a chance that this...

Who will survive and, dare we say it, what will be left of them?
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of horror’s modern-day cornerstones, and it’s fair to say that, even after all these years, Tobe Hooper’s cult classic stands the test of time. Fast forward to the present day and, in light of Hooper’s recent death, there’s an air of bittersweet sorrow looming over Leatherface, Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s horror prequel due to rev up the family chainsaw next month.
Of course, we say bittersweet because although it’s sad to lose such a remarkable talent, in many ways Leatherface will hope to honor Hooper’s spine-chilling legacy. And the film’s new and indeed final poster has arrived just in time for release. Embedded below, it’s a decidedly chilling tease of what’s to come, and we can only assume...

This Halloween, prepare to witness the true origins of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
We are, of course, referring to Leatherface, Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s long-anticipated prequel that has taken on a greater meaning since the death of Tobe Hooper, a recognized mainstay of Hollywood’s horror genre thanks to his involvement in Poltergeist, Salem’s Lot and of course, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which spawned a million nightmares in 1974 with its tale of deranged cannibals residing in America’s Deep South.
Now, almost 45 years since its inception, Maury and Bustillo are prepped and ready to deliver a freaky origin story centering on one of cinema’s greatest movie monsters. Working from a script penned by Seth M. Sherwood, Leatherface is little over a month away from its limited theatrical release, and the folks over at Bloody Disgusting have relayed a creepy new poster to stoke the embers of excitement.

A new theatrical trailer has been released for the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massare prequel film Leatherface. The first trailer that was released was a red-band version, this latest one isn't as hardcore, but it still gives you a good idea of what to expect from the movie.
I remember seeing the original film for the first time as a young teenager and it kind of jacked me up. The movie was wickedly disturbing and none of the other films in the franchise managed to bring that raw horror grittiness. Most of the other films were still entertaining, though.
I'm still not sold on this prequel movie. I hope that it's good, though! I'd love to see another good movie in this horror franchise. I wasn't a big fan of that remake that was made back in 2003.

The Sawyer family may not hold the same level of prestige in the horror genre as, say, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, or even Chucky, the pint-sized Devil Doll who is gearing up for a triumphant return in October, but make no mistake, that cannibalistic clan is the stuff of nightmares.
First introduced via Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre many moons ago, later this year directors Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo will be peeling back the many layers of the Sawyer family to uncover Leatherface, a horror prequel that’s set to deliver a jump-scare or three in October.
It’s one of two high-profile titles coming out of Lionsgate this Halloween season – the other being Michael and Peter Spierig’s Jigsaw – but as Leatherface is poised to launch into theaters first, the studio has doubled down on the prequel’s marketing blitz to unveil a new, suitably creepy poster.
