Over the past two years, a thriving market for licensing copyrighted material to train artificial intelligence systems has emerged. OpenAI was the first to strike deals with publications, like Axel Springer, News Corp. and the Associated Press. A few others in the field followed.
Such agreements weren’t in place when AI firms first started to face litigation accusing them of widespread infringement. Now, lawsuits are increasingly targeting the existence of this licensing market to argue that AI companies are illegally pilfering creators’ works.
Authors, in a proposed class action filed on Monday evening, accused Anthropic of illegally downloading and copying their books to power its AI chatbot Claude. The lawsuit alleges that the Amazon-backed company “usurped a licensing market for copyright owners.”
Without intervention from Congress, the legality of using copyrighted works in training datasets will be decided by the courts. The question will likely be answered in part on fair use,...

Nearly two decades have passed since the arrest of New Jersey nurse Charles Cullen made national headlines, and now the story of how the serial killer was brought to justice by his coworker, Amy Loughren, has been adapted for the screen under the title “The Good Nurse.” Eddie Redmayne’s performance as Cullen has earned him his sixth Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, which could lead to a history-making victory. Since he already won the lead actor category for 2014’s “The Theory of Everything” and the ensemble award for 2020’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” he only needs to clinch this supporting trophy in order to become the first male recipient of all possible SAG Awards for film acting.
For the first time in nine years, all five supporting actor nominees are new to the category. Paul Dano (“The Fabelmans”) is the only other past SAG Award winner in the bunch,...

Eddie Redmayne turned in one of the subtler but ultimately shocking serial killer portrayals, starring with Jessica Chastain in the Tobias Lindholm-directed Netflix drama The Good Nurse. In the movie based on actual events, Redmayne’s Charlie Cullen goes from a non-descript night nurse who becomes a lifesaving friend to co-worker Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain), until she realized her pal might be killing patients who should be recovering. He would ultimately confess to killing about 40 people, and drew 18 executive life sentences, while the hospital administrators who quietly dismissed him even though they had their suspicions were not punished for the cover-up.
In Redmayne, this is the kind of versatility you might expect from an actor who’s won the Oscar, Tony, Golden Globe, BAFTA and two Laurence Oliver awards and in turns such as Cabaret onstage, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Here, Redmayne discusses the opinions he...

“I’m someone that prefers to react to what’s in front of me, rather than going out with an aspiration or ambition of what I could play,” reveals Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne in our recent webchat. He plays serial killer Charles Cullin in “The Good Nurse,” which made its Netflix debut on October 26. “This script arrived in my hands six years ago and I knew [director Tobias Lindholm‘s] work. When I read the script it had the label of true crime, but as it unraveled it seemed almost genre-less. It refused to be boxed.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“I had never heard of this guy, and I would be the kind of person who would know about the most prolific serial killer in the U.S.,” The Good Nurse director Tobias Lindholm said of the real-life Charles Cullen, played by Eddie Redmayne in the Netflix film.
“I realized this was not a story about necessarily a serial killer but about a whole system allowing him to continue to do what he was doing, and then I knew we had a story that would throw us back to the great ’70s thrillers that I love,” Lindholm added about Cullen and the for-profit American medical companies that shuffled the killer nurse around from hospital to hospital for years, resulting in hundreds of patient murders.

‘The Good Nurse’ Star Eddie Redmayne Found Humanity in the Inhumane for the Netflix True Crime Drama
Click here to read the full article.
In Tobias Lindholm’s Netflix drama The Good Nurse, Eddie Redmayne plays real-life serial killer Charlie Cullen, who at first seems like a sweet, docile hospital nurse until it’s revealed over the course of the film that he’s been stealthily killing perhaps hundreds of patients — for no apparent reason. Fellow Oscar winner Jessica Chastain stars as Cullen’s colleague Amy Loughren, who discovers Cullen’s crimes and fights a corrupt medical system to expose him.
Loughren’s fight served as the subject of Charles Graeber’s nonfiction book of the same name, which became the basis for the script by Krysty Wilson-Cairns (a best screenplay Oscar nominee for 1917). Loughren met with both Redmayne and Chastain prior to filming and even visited the set. After six years of production, with stops and starts as funding came and went, her story is finally out in the world.

Editor’s note: This interview was originally published on October 19, 2022, and has been lightly updated throughout.
It’s the week before Eddie Redmayne’s latest film, Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,” hits select theaters after a robust festival run. The Oscar winner is in an SUV, zipping from one engagement to the next. He’s been everywhere lately, Toronto to New York, Mill Valley to Newport Beach, Los Angeles to London. He’s all smiles.
And, hilariously, the genial Brit somehow lights up even more when asked why he took on the role of Charles Cullen, potentially America’s most prolific serial killer, for the Netflix drama.
Me: “This is so not an Eddie Redmayne role. You’re a serial killer!” Redmayne: “Oh, that’s like the loveliest thing you could possibly say!”

Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,” now streaming on Netflix, features a chilling performance from Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne. In the true-crime drama, he plays serial killer Charles Cullen, a nurse who supposedly murdered hundreds of patients while in his care. Jessica Chastain plays Amy Loughren, a single mother and fellow nurse at Parkfield Memorial Hospital in New Jersey who uncovers Charles’ killings. Check out an exclusive featurette below, courtesy of Netflix, highlighting the challenges that went into Redmayne’s many-layered turn, which marks his creepiest role to date.
Based on Charles Graeber’s 2013 book “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder” with input from the real-life Loughren, the thriller is directed by Danish filmmaker Lindholm.

"Based on a true story." No five words in cinema have been abused more than those that have opened so many movies. "The Good Nurse" is one of them. Netflix's latest true crime drama is based on the 2013 book by Charles Graeber and documents Charles Cullen, a nurse who murdered patients from 1988 to 2003 by injecting insulin and/or digoxin into IV bags.
Eddie Redmayne plays Cullen in the film, but he's not the lead. That would be his friend and co-worker, Amy Louhgren (Jessica Chastain). She has a good heart, albeit one afflicted with cardiomyopathy, and so comes to rely on "Charlie" during their shared night shifts. After one of their patients dies, though, she slowly discovers his crimes.
So, how true of a story is "The Good Nurse"? While "true story" movies often employ composite characters, Amy Louhgren was the real nurse who helped catch Cullen. The film's personal details of Amy,...

Photo: ‘The Good Nurse’ Working long nights in the ICU, battling a severe heart condition, and parenting two children as a single mother, Amy Loughren was happy to meet a new coworker and colleague that exerted energy that lifted weights off her shoulders. With their newfound friendship, Amy Loughren did not expect that she would fall into an objective to save the lives of any patients in the path of Charles Cullen, a nurse suspected to be responsible for the undetected murders of many patients. Hesitant, as she believed this was out of character for the charismatic and relatable Charles, the rise of deaths in the hospital following the employment of Cullen raised her suspicions. Teaming up with detectives Tim Braun and Danny Baldwin, Amy worked discreetly with the duo to get proof of the homicides and a confession from Charles. Dramatized from the real events in 2003 and the novel by Charles Graeber,...

“Capturing the Killer Nurse” is a documentary about Charles Cullen, the serial killer whose chilling story is the basis of the Eddie Redmayne/Jessica Chastain movie “The Good Nurse.” Both films are being released by Netflix, in what has become a synergistic system of true-crime-as-cross-promotion. What both versions show you is that the Cullen saga may be the first case of a serial killer who was enabled by corporate malfeasance.
Cullen, a geek with a porn-star mustache and a smirky grimace who spent 16 years as a highly regarded nurse in the Northeast (mostly New Jersey), injected hospital drugs — principally the heart-failure medication Digoxin — into a number of patients, killing them “invisibly.” He was arrested in December 2003 and confessed to the murders of 29 people; many think that he killed closer to 400. Given that his track record of foul play is traceable to the early ’90s, and that he worked in nine different hospitals,...

Warning: The following article contains major spoilers for the Netflix film "The Good Nurse."
Any show or film "based on a true story" is guaranteed to have a built-in creep factor. In the case of "The Good Nurse," the story rips pages from Charles Graeber's 2013 book " The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder," which details how real-life serial killer Charles "Charlie" Cullen murdered dozens (possibly hundreds) of people. The film, co-starring Eddie Redmayne as Cullen and Jessica Chastain as the eponymous good nurse Amy Loughren, is the latest in a long string of serial killer adaptations to hit Netflix, for better or worse.
While the film itself falls a little flat, there is plenty to admire about both Chastain's and Redmayne's performances. Redmayne, in particular, makes a disturbing turn as the deadly nurse, who insidiously wields his power to kill people under the guise of simply doing his job.

These days, Netflix is all in on the serial killer beat, thanks to myriad offerings on the twisted subject, from Ryan Murphy’s massively successful Jeffrey Dahmer miniseries to Tobias Lindholm’s recent chilly drama “The Good Nurse.” Never one to waste an opportunity to keep its audience’s rapt attention, Murphy’s initial one-off is now set for the anthology treatment (which will explore various titular “monsters” through history), while Lindholm’s fact-based feature is followed by a flimsy documentary about murderous nurse Charles Cullen.
— particularly when interested parties can watch Lindholm’s far superior dramatization of the same material. The Cullen case is ripe for exploration, though, what with the convicted murderer believed to potentially be America’s most prolific serial killer. He’s currently incarcerated for 11 back-to-back lifetime sentences with 29 confirmed victims and possibly 400 overall. How do you capture the most prolific serial killer in American history? It just takes one whistleblower to call out her colleague.
Jessica Chastain portrays nurse Amy Loughren, who helped take down killer Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne) in the Netflix drama “The Good Nurse.” Cullen is believed to have murdered as many as 400 patients over the course of his 16-year career in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It feels inappropriate to call the true crime genre "entertainment," but it's never been more evident that audiences can't get enough of dark stories based on real-life events. The true crime bubble keeps getting bigger, and Netflix is cashing in on these stories in a very big way. Despite the protests from the living family members of the victims of Jeffrey Dahmer, Netflix forged through with Ryan Murphy's "Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," and the show was a massive success. Murphy's follow-up project, "The Watcher," was so popular it impacted the sales of home security cameras, and the recent release of "The Good Nurse" is proof the streamer doesn't have any intention of changing pace anytime soon.

For The Good Nurse brain trust of director Tobias Lindholm and writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the question is how, not why.
In the Netflix thriller-drama, Lindholm and Wilson-Cairns tell the true story of how a compassionate ICU nurse named Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain) managed to take down fellow nurse Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), arguably the deadliest serial killer in American history. Loughren showed tremendous bravery at a time when she was not only raising two daughters by herself, but also dealing with a life-threatening heart condition without health insurance.
The film also puts a spotlight on the many hospitals that turned a blind eye to Cullen’s behavior, exposing even more flaws in the U.S. healthcare system. Cullen ultimately pled guilty to the murders of 29 patients, but the actual number over the course of his 16-year nursing career is in the ballpark of 400.

Even “The Good Nurse” screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns felt a little tapped out on true-crime stories when she was first approached about adapting Charles Graeber’s book “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder” into a big screen version.
Almost 10 years ago, the future “1917” and “Last Night in Soho” screenwriter was fresh off earning her Ma from the National Film and Television School and snagging a spot on the 2014 Black List with her sci-fi script “Aether,” which tracked a serial killer in the near future. When the fledging screenwriter’s new agency sent her stack of books to potentially adapt, at the top of the heap was Graeber’s, which followed the incredible (and horrifying) true story of Charles Cullen, now believed to be America’s most prolific serial killer.

Jessica Chastain plays the titular character in "The Good Nurse," which is not an ironic title for the true crime story. Based on Charles Graeber's book, nurse Amy Loughren (Chastain) discovers her friend, Charlie Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), is murdering patients. It's a horrifying story that screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns initially wasn't interesting in telling. Once she read Charles Graeber's book about the case, though, she had to write the screenplay, which was eventually directed by filmmaker Tobias Lindholm.
Krysty Wilson-Cairns is the Academy Award-nominated screenwriter behind "1917." Over the last few years, she co-wrote "Last Night in Soho" and also worked on "Penny Dreadful." She's a standout writer for a variety of reasons, including the fact she's often on set collaborating with the directors. It's a rare experience she recently told us about in an interview about "The Good Nurse," her past work, and letting actors act.

Jessica Chastain recently won an Oscar for portraying real-life hero Tammy Faye, but taking on a true “angel” caught up in a serial killer drama was a whole other story.
Chastain plays nurse Amy Loughren, who helped take down killer colleague Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), who is believed to have murdered as many as 400 patients over the course of his 16-year career in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Netflix film “The Good Nurse” is helmed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Tobias Lindholm (“The Investigation”) and premieres in theaters October 19 and on Netflix October 26.
“It was different than anything else that I have ever done because I have never filmed a scene from someone’s life as they observed me acting it,” Chastain told IndieWire at the film’s premiere. “She was at the monitor. A private screening of “The Good Nurse” was held at the Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles on Friday, October 14 with stars Eddie Redmayne, Jessica Chastain and Nnamdi Asomugha as well as director Tobias Lindholm, writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns and one of the film’s subjects, Amy Loughren. The event was presented by Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield and included a Q&a panel discussion following the Netflix film.
“I wasn’t aware [of the story],” Chastain admitted. “I live in New York and this happened in New Jersey. I was shocked when I read the screenplay and figured a lot of it had to have been made up. It felt too strange to be real, and surprising that the most prolific serial killer in the history of the United States, I didn’t know anything about. He killed probably around 400 people. It was wonderful to do the research, to meet Amy and it was very inspiring to work on.

Specialty film rollouts continues to accelerate with Chinonye Chukwu’s Till, Park Chan-wook’s Decision To Leave and A24’s Stars At Noon joining releases from previous weeks to populate theaters as awards season gathers steam.
Till, from United Artists Releasing, world premiered at the ongoing New York Film Festival to stellar reviews. It opens on 16 screens in five markets – NY, LA, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The story of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old lynched in 1955 while visiting cousins in Mississippi, is an emotional one, and a tough one. But explicit violence is something Chukwu determinedly left out of the frame, focusing instead on Deadwyler’s Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmet’s mother, as she pursues justice for her son. Word of mouth, that this is first and foremost a poignant, powerful cinematic journey about one person changing history, will be key.

Attending the Zurich Film Festival for the screening of his latest film, “The Good Nurse,” Eddie Redmayne spoke about his desire to work with director Tobias Lindholm, the joy of watching Jessie Buckley’s performance in “Cabaret” and the disappointment of missing out on “Games of Thrones.”
“The Good Nurse,” which Variety’s Tomris Laffly describes as “soulful” and “devastating,” tells the true story of nurse Charles Cullen, who confessed to murdering at least 29 patients but who may have in fact murdered as many as 400 people, and fellow nurse Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain), who helped solve the case. It’s based on the book “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and Murder,” by Charles Graeber.

For better or worse, Netflix has made a lot of noise during these early days of awards season with the acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival premiere of “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and the divisive Venice Film Festival debuts for “Bardo,” “Blonde,” and “White Noise.” But it’s one of the streamer’s inconspicuous titles that could ultimately prove undeniable to awards season voters: “The Good Nurse,” which premiered in Toronto on Sunday with strong reviews for its two stars, Oscar winners Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne.
Calling the Netflix release “one of the best films of 2022,” Deadline awards expert and reviewer Pete Hammond wrote that Chastain is “terrific” in “The Good Nurse,” but reserved his biggest huzzahs for Redmayne. “Redmayne, playing the kind of dark character we have never seen him do before, is simply astonishing bringing an eerie vocal tone and specific physicality to the role that will give you chills.

Jessica Chastain isn’t a big fan of true crime dramas, especially those about serial killers.

In the fall of 2003, a new nurse arrived at a quiet hospital in the middle of New Jersey. He was mild-mannered and affable, with an impressive resume of former gigs. His name was Charles Cullen. Call him Charlie. He quickly became friends with fellow nurse Amy Loughren, who was also good at her job and kind to those who came into her orbit. Both were hiding secrets: Amy had recently learned she had a disease that required a heart transplant, one she could not afford until she had finished up six months at her new-ish gig at the hospital; Charlie was a serial killer.
What happened when Amy met Charlie, and then discovered his horrifying secret and helped bring him to justice, is well-dramatized in Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse.” Based on Charles Graeber’s book “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder” and exactingly adapted by “1917” screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns,...

First a little warning. I had the good fortune to see The Good Nurse knowing absolutely nothing about it except it was a Netflix movie starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. I had no idea which one was even “the good nurse” of the title, and I was not familiar with the book it is based on, or even the fact it is actually a true story. For all I knew it was like a female version of Freddie Highmore in The Good Doctor. Netflix set up a screening for me at a local screening room. I sat by myself for two hours stunned by what I was seeing slowly take place, a turn of events I did not see coming as I realized I had the same experience in some ways as a viewer as Chastain’s character, Amy Loughren, had in real life.

During a career of 16 years that spanned numerous East Coast hospitals since the late ‘80s, real-life nurse Charles Cullen confessed to murdering at least 29 patients with a fatal cocktail of drugs he dripped into his victims’ bloodstream. That figure was only his confirmed body count, however. As a title card suggests at the end of Tobias Lindholm’s shrewd and absorbing drama “The Good Nurse” — a Netflix original that just premiered at Toronto — the real number of his victims was predicted to be as high as a blood-curdling 400.
Hopping from one job to the next, the serial killer went undetected by the authorities, with his connection to the unusual deaths remaining as an open-secret suspicion at every facility he worked at. In order to avoid legal ramifications, none of the hospitals reported him — they just made him someone else’s problem, as the story of any corrupt institution goes.

A true-crime picture whose chilling effects are generated without a whiff of the manipulation that often comes with such films, Tobias Lindholm’s The Good Nurse watches as a veteran caregiver (Jessica Chastain) realizes her new best friend at work (Eddie Redmayne) may be killing their patients.
That fact is up front in loglines and promotional materials, which is a shame, because the very fine drama works even better for someone who walks in knowing only the stars’ and director’s names: Such a viewer — who might guess that the “good nurse” in question is Redmayne, innocently caught in a scandal of hospital bureaucracy — feels the drama’s heartbreak more than is possible otherwise. Either way, the picture is an assured English-language debut for Lindholm, a sometime Thomas Vinterberg collaborator and director of Danish films A War, A Hijacking and R.

Academy Award winners Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain bring a harrowing hospital true crime saga to life with “The Good Nurse.”
The Netflix film, helmed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Tobias Lindholm (“The Investigation”), tells the disturbingly true tale of serial killer nurse Charles Cullen (Eddie Redmayne), who is believed to have murdered as many as 400 patients over the course of his 16-year career in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Cullen killed patients by administering lethal doses of insulin and other potentially fatal drugs; he confessed to killing up to 40 people and is currently serving 17 consecutive life sentences in prison.
Cullen’s coworker and fellow nurse Amy Loughren (Chastain) ultimately led to Cullen’s capture. Loughren grew suspicious of Cullen after detectives investigated an unusual death at the hospital where they worked.
