Given everything “Riverdale” threw at her and her castmates, Camila Mendes left her seven season, 137 episode run on the hit CW show having found her power.
“‘Riverdale’ was one of the most bizarre, fun landscapes to play with, and so the challenges were endless and I think there was never a dull day as an actor especially,” said the actress who played Veronica Lodge in the inventive Archie Comics adaptation. “There was a technical training that ‘Riverdale’ taught me that now I feel like I can do anything because we did it all on that show. Speaking to IndieWire over Zoom, Mendes clarifies that she had already shot the two Prime Video films she has been promoting this year, Outstanding TV Movie Emmy contenders “Upgraded” and “Música,” before the series came to an end, so she ended the series feeling “very happy that those...

The premiere week of Netflix’s “Ripley” elbowed “3 Body Problem” out of the No. 1 slot among streaming original series for the week of April 5-11, according to Luminate streaming ratings.
Among streaming original movies, “Scoop” managed a solid break for Netflix while Amazon Prime Video’s “Road House” hung tough in its third full week in release, as reported by Luminate in its weekly Top 10 Streaming Originals charts for series and movies.
“Ripley,” the much talked-about adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic fraudster saga “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” from Oscar-winning screenwriter Steve Zaillian, debuted with about 670.1 million minutes watched across its eight episodes. That translates to about 1.5 million views.
A sleeper entrant at No. 2 was Netflix’s unscripted crime docu “Files of the Unexplained,” with 531.3 million minutes watched across eight episodes. The show’s audience grew 276% in its first full week in release after premiering on April 3.

Parachute is a refreshingly raw, honest, and vulnerable portrayal of addiction and codependency in relationships. Through heartfelt performances, Brittany Snow's film explores the challenges of self-love and emotional intimacy with skillful storytelling. The movie's indie charm and emotional depth make it a triumph in handling the complexity of sensitive souls and psyches.
Writer/director Brittany Show boldly pulls the creative ripcord in Parachute, her feature film debut behind the camera, and makes an impressive landing. The filmmaker delivers a refreshingly honest, compassionate, and thought-provoking story about addiction and codependency. Parachute is a glorious achievement from Snow and some great indie filmmaking to boot.
Curiously, the first draft of the script, which Snow collaborated on with friend/colleague Becca Gleason, was more of a rom-com than a deep dive into the complexities of maintaining honest connections in friendships and relationships while your own life is spinning out of control. Cheers to this evolution,...

Rudy chooses Isabella over Haley in Música's ending. Rudy focuses on his puppet show instead of desperately trying to get back together with Isabella after she rejects him, and he turns his dream into reality. Música is more than a romantic comedy, as it focuses on Rudy's individual growth and uncertainty about the future.
Música is yet another exciting addition to the romantic comedy genre in the 2020s, but the movie is much more than its central love story, as proven by its ending. The 2024 film, directed by Rudy Mancuso (in his feature film directorial debut) and co-written by Mancuso and Dan Lagana, revolves around a Brazilian American man who is about to graduate college when his girlfriend (Francesca Reale as Haley) of four years dumps him. Key to the ongoing conversations about Latino representation in the U.S. entertainment industry is the need for the diversification of stories, which in turn would breed valuable specificity. Rather than expecting one production to speak strongly to every single subset of the vast Latino community, projects should reflect the unique microcosms and experiences that speak to groups such as Cuban Americans in Florida, Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, or Dominican Americans in New York City.
Enter the multi-hyphenate Rudy Mancuso, whose charmingly inventive and loosely autobiographical feature directorial debut “Música” highlights the Brazilian American community of New Jersey’s Ironbound neighborhood. In addition to starring in the film as a fictionalized version of his younger self, the talented Mancuso — who started out making videos on the now-defunct app Vine before moving on to YouTube and live shows — co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Lagana and, fittingly, also created the integral music.

Get ready to go gaga for another group of earnest teenagers hoping to change the world, or at least win a fake election at a famous youth retreat.
The contender to watch this week: “Girls State”
In 2021, “Boys State” picked up recognitions from the National Board of Review, Directors Guild of America, Emmys, and several critics groups, so of course we’re getting a sequel. This time, directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss move from Texas to Missouri to profile teenagers attending the eponymous mock-government program. The ambitious, excitable girls are just as fascinating as their male counterparts, and you can see them in action on Apple TV+.
Other contenders:
“The Zone of Interest“: If you still haven’t caught Jonathan Glazer‘s mesmerizing Holocaust drama, which won two Oscars and continues to spark controversy, it’s newly streaming on Max. “How to Have Sex”: Molly Manning Walker...

"Música" delves into Rudy Mancuso's struggles with rhythmic synesthesia and immigrant identity through a talented cast. Mancuso's passion for music shines in his autobiographical movie, revealing a torturous yet inspiring journey. With a 95% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, "Música" effectively tells a true-ish story with heart and authenticity.
The somewhat autobiographical movie Música dives into the life experience of Rudy Mancuso, and its unique cast helps to make this difficult endeavor possible. As a musician, there's no question that Mancuso has a passion for music, but his 2024 movie reveals that this is something of a torturous experience. Between his struggle with rhythmic synesthesia and the pressures of being the child of an immigrant in the United States, the internet star and filmmaker has quite the story to tell—and his musical-ish movie Música was the perfect outlet to do so.

Before Rudy Mancuso wrote, directed, starred in and composed the music for his stylish debut feature, Música, he made exuberant short-form videos for Vine (R.I.P). In those six-second clips, many of which are compiled on YouTube, the artist experiments with slapstick comedy, an energetic editing style and bouncy compositions that channel how he sees the world. Mancuso has synesthesia, a perceptual condition in which any one kind of sensory stimulation can spark spontaneous reactions in another. Where others see a square, Mancuso might also hear a B note; the letter A will always be terracotta to him, and so on.
In Música, the artist mines his personal life and singular experience of the world to craft a charming coming-of-age story. The film, which premiered at SXSW and is streaming on Prime Video, follows Rudy (Mancuso) six weeks before his college graduation, when the young Newark native must confront...

It’s a drizzly Mondy morning in New York, and the hotel restaurant I’m sitting in is filled with the sounds of prep work for the day. To me, the tinkling glasses and ringing silverware are easily ignorable, the hodgepodge of clinks and clatters immediately fading into the background. But for writer and director Rudy Mancuso — of Vine and YouTube stardom — there’s a veritable drum line around us, being played bottle by bottle. Actually, it’s the very reason we’re here.

CinemaBlind’s Review – 70%
Rudy Mancuso brings his unique style of music to a coming-of-age romantic comedy in Prime Video’s Música. Mancuso has done something wonderful in his directorial debut but it is not perfect. Following all the cliched beats of any rom-coms, Música distinguishes itself from other rom-coms because of its style of storytelling but it falls short when it comes to the real romance of it all.
Based on his own experiences, Mancuso co-wrote the film with Dan Lagana and it follows the story of a young man suffering from synesthesia, which turns all the sounds around him into music. With an uncertain future, an overbearing mother, and an interest in puppetry, Rudy gets stuck in a love triangle with his long-time girlfriend, who doesn’t understand him, and a girl he recently met, who supports his dreams.

Música is "95%" true to Rudy Mancuso's life, with some creative liberties for entertainment value. The movie spotlights synesthesia, seeking to show both the "interesting" and "debilitating" aspects of the condition. Mancuso drew inspiration from Charlie Chaplin for wearing multiple hats in the film, including directing and composing.

Música brings a refreshing take on romantic comedies, anchored in Brazilian American culture and synesthesia. The film defies expectations with a creative portrayal of synesthesia, great chemistry, and cultural authenticity. Despite rushed pacing in the third act, Música is a classic rom-com with heart, soul, and unique representation.
Romantic comedies might be an iconic part of the 1990s and early 2000s, with many thinking back to the golden years of rom-coms, especially as they have recently fallen out of favor with moviegoers. Some movies in 2024 and late 2023 are looking to change that. Amazon Studio's Música is one of them. Anchored in the Brazilian American culture of New Jersey, where the film is set, and a rich visual experience reflecting what it's like to live with synesthesia, this is a refreshing take on the age-old classic world of romantic comedies.

When he’s not taking classes to finish his college degree or staging puppet performances for commuters on the streets of the Ironbound’s close-knit Brazilian community, Rudy is trying to convince his girlfriend, Haley (Francesca Reale), that he will eventually figure things out. He lives with his mother,...

On the surface, “Música” feels like a very standard story about a talented guy who finds himself caught between two girls he likes, and — rather than be honest with them — starts dating both at the same time. Hilarity ensues. Thankfully, much like the fictional Rudy he plays here, the real Rudy Mancuso is more than meets the eye. His feature directorial debut is a smart and charming coming-of-age love story that is also a musical and such a good cinematic portrayal of synesthesia that it’ll make you forget all about the other, misbegotten attempts to thread the same needle (does anyone remember “August Rush”?).
We are in the era of social media movie directors, but the days of “Fred: The Movie” are thankfully gone. Between Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade,” and Danny and Michael Philippou’s “Talk to Me,” YouTube is starting to seem like a viable incubator for worthwhile film directors.

Starz has decided to cancel its original shows Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, along with the yet-to-premiere series The Venery of Samantha Bird. Heels is a drama about two wrestling brothers dealing with their complicated relationship after their father's death. Run the World is a comedy following a group of women in Harlem, while Blindspotting is a spinoff/sequel to the 2018 film and focuses on a man's partner after his imprisonment.
Despite the apparent end of the writers strike, which will launch a long list of productions that were halted, Starz has decided to cancel some of its original shows. Including the popular drama starring Stephen Amell, Heels. Just months after the premiere of the second seasons of Heels, Run the World, and Blindspotting, Starz has decided not to continue with any of the series for a third installment. Starz has axed three existing drama series and one upcoming project.
The network has binned Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting as well as not moving forward with The Venery of Samantha Bird.
Heels, Run The World and Blindspotting all aired two seasons and The Venery of Samantha Bird paused production in May due to the strikes with two episodes left to film.
Heels revolves around the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small-town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

Exclusive: Starz’ The Venery of Samantha Bird has shut down production as a result of the writers strike.
Deadline understands that the drama series has paused filming with two episodes of its eight episode order left to shoot. The series shoots in Montreal.
It comes after Netflix’s Rob Lowe comedy series Unstable and HBO Max’s Hacks were shut down for similar reasons and writers rooms for shows such as Starz’ Power Book III: Raising Kanan, NBC’s Night Court, Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Showtime’s Yellowjackets and ABC’s Abbott Elementary also closed their writing rooms.
The series stars Katherine Langford in the title role and was created by Anna Moriarty.
It follows Samantha Bird, who, while visiting family in New England, Samantha Bird reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But underneath their fever dream lurks a more unsettling interpretation of this affair.

In 2007, just after her breakout movie role as brittle, sizeist mean-girl Amber Von Tussle in Adam Shankman’s “Hairspray,” actor Brittany Snow took to the pages of People to talk about her own longtime battle with anorexia. But in a cultural moment that was peculiarly hostile to the mental health crises of young female celebrities — it was also the year that Britney Spears shaved her head — the response to her op-ed was dismissive. Now, 16 years and something of a sea change in social attitudes later, the sheer sincerity of Snow’s directorial debut is quite the rebuttal to those who accused her of mere attention-seeking back then. Unmistakably informed by personal, painful experience, “Parachute” pulls its ripcord early, determined to let its self-critical, struggling characters drift down to the soft landing Snow herself was not granted.

Actor Brittany Snow (the Pitch Perfect franchise, Hairspray) just about nails it as a writer-director with her first feature, Parachute, a rom-dram set in New York City and co-written with Becca Gleason (Summer ‘03).
This astute, impressively honest portrait of a complicated relationship between Riley (Courtney Eaton from Yellowjackets, who picked up a prize for her performance at SXSW), a young woman with an eating disorder and addiction issues, and Ethan (Thomas Mann, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), a guy disposed toward co-dependency, is perhaps a smidge messy structurally. But then again, so is life. Viewers, especially those in the same demographic as the protagonists, will probably cut the film and its vividly drawn characters some slack as they try to navigate territory thickly peppered with emotional landmines.

There’s a lot going on in this troubled-girl-on-a-journey story, which recalls the late-’90s proliferation of books like Elizabeth Wurtzel’s Prozac Nation and Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted. Brittany Snow’s directing debut doesn’t so much add to that canon as dust it down a bit for a new generation, and its success is mostly attributable to its empathetic star Courtney Eaton — the deserving winner of a SXSW Special Jury Recognition for Performance — whose low-key work anchors a needlessly busy film that never quite settles down.
A lot is packed into the opening salvo, from the moment we see Riley (Eaton) sitting on the curb outside a forbiddingly nondescript building, scrolling through pages and pages of narcissistic Instagram influencers. “Pitch Perfect” star Brittany Snow has spoken openly about dealing with an eating disorder from a very young age, but she revealed at SXSW Saturday that her directorial debut “Parachute,” which grapples with themes of mental health in a woman suffering from her own disorder, is “very personal” for other, more romantic reasons.
“Parachute” is about Riley (Courtney Eaton), a young woman just out of rehab and now attending therapy to contend with her own body issues and self-loathing behavior. But it’s more significantly a love story about her relationship and friendship with Ethan (Thomas Mann), and how this co-dependent bond between the two of them helps her on the road to recovery. It turns out though that there’s a “real Ethan” with whom Snow remains best friends, and Snow’s purpose for telling this story was not to dwell on her own past but to come at...

Not everyone can make the messy young woman archetype as charming and quirky as Greta Gerwig can, but she certainly started a trend. In the long overdue push to center women’s perspectives, conventional romantic plots have been replaced by gritty tales of lost young women spiraling out, leaving trails of chaos in their wake. With men’s stories crowding most of film history, a host of untapped material awaits the burgeoning genre of the messy young woman. As with all familiar stories, however, it’s all too easy to court cliché — even when trying so hard to flout conventions.
The actress Brittany Snow, best known for her role in the “Pitch Perfect” films, makes her directorial debut with “Parachute,” a meandering portrait of a particular type of lost young woman. Played by “Yellowjackets” star Courtney Eaton, unemployed 20-something Riley is a child of privilege careening between an eating disorder and extreme codependency.

Filmmaker Jonah Feingold has always been charmed by the idea of happily ever after. But as a hardened New Yorker, born and raised in Manhattan, he’s not naive enough to believe that’s always the way a love story ends.
In his first film, the modern romantic comedy “Dating and New York,” which follows two commitment-phobic millennials, he let audiences fall for the central couple (played by Jaboukie Young-White and Francesca Reale) for 90 minutes before breaking them up in the final seconds of the story. Starz has added seven more to the cast of its forthcoming drama, “The Venery of Samantha Bird,” including Finn Jones, Francesca Reale, Embeth Davidtz, Brenda Strong, Adam Faison, Tyrone Marshall Brown and Shalini Bathina.
The new batch of series regulars joins previously announced star Katherine Langford, who will portray the show’s titular character.
The eight-episode drama follows Samantha Bird (Langford) who, while visiting family in New England, reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But the couple’s picture-perfect love story isn’t as sweet as it seems on the surface.
Jones will play Jake Minot, Samantha’s former childhood sweetheart. While it’s been some time since the two has seen each other, they still manage to pick up like no time has passed after they reconnect during her trip.
Reale (“Stranger Things”) will play Ellie Bird, Samantha’s confident, intelligent and pleasantly outspoken youngest sister.
