A24's religious-themed horror flick, Heretic, recently landed on Max after an impressive run in theaters, and it's pulling in massive viewership numbers for the streamer.

Per FlixPatrol, Heretic is the most popular film on Max, just days after landing on the streaming service. The Hugh Grant-led film beat out the Oscar-winning animated film Flow, which ranks second on the list, and the recently added video game adaptation Assassin's Creed, which comes in at third. Heretic also ranks third among all movies and television shows on the platform. During its theatrical run, Heretic took home $58 million at the worldwide box office against a reported budget of $10 million. The film received tons of praise from critics upon release, earning a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, while Grant earned some awards recognition for his performances as the villainous Mr. Reed. Grant was nominated at the BAFTA Awards, Critics' Choice Awards, and Golden Globes for his performance.

Mr. Reed’s (Hugh Grant) twisted game to further exploit the "one true religion" leads to quite the perilous predicament for Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) in the psychological thriller Heretic. The film was a bona fide box office hit, making $58.1 million worldwide against a production budget of only $10 million, and the horror flick is now the No. 1 movie streaming on Max. It's even outperforming the Oscar-winning Flow (Best Animated Feature Film), which checks in at No. 2.

Heretic’s intriguing storytelling and foreboding atmosphere definitely do the movie credit, but much of the film’s success firmly lies with its three actors. Thatcher and Paxton give powerful performances as the unsuspecting protagonists spreading the word of God, but Grant’s indelible portrayal of Mr. Reed is not to be missed. In fact, the thespian took the utmost measures to bring a sense of realism to this particular villain.

It may be hard for folks who weren't around at the time to understand, but there was a moment when Hugh Grant appeared poised to become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet.

Flashback to the spring of 1994. Bill Clinton was a popular U.S. President, everyone was drinking Zima, and moviegoers were flocking to cineplexes to see the British rom-com "Four Weddings and a Funeral." It was a surprise hit that picked up word-of-mouth steam via a slow roll-out from its distributor Gramercy Pictures, which was fortunate to have a great, immensely appealing film at a time when theaters were being inundated with dreck like "Major League II," "Cops and Robbersons" and "D2: The Mighty Ducks."

While "Four Weddings and a Funeral" is at heart an ensemble comedy, Grant's endearingly flappable demeanor and effortless delivery of the film's hilariously quippy dialogue had some critics comparing him to Hollywood's greatest Grant.

Awards season may have come and gone, but if you are still interested in catching up on some of the 2024 films you missed, then Max may be where you want to look in March. Warner Bros. Discovery has announced the movies, TV shows and live sports that will be available on the Max streaming service in March. The Max March 2025 lineup includes the fourth and final season of The Righteous Gemstones, the documentary series Celtics City, and the A24 Films Heretic, Sing Sing and Queer.

Hey, horror friends! I have not written a proper favorites list in a long time, and I am happy to be back with all of you, talking about horror and horror-adjacent things that happened this year. I tried my best to see Nosferatu (2024) before making this list, but, alas, I was not able to. My ticket is booked for the day that it comes out. 2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. Liz Feldman’s No Good Deed has suspense, emotion and humor all in one. The murder mystery series starring Lisa Kudrow, Ray Romano, Abbi Jacobson, Denis Leary, Poppy Liu. O-t Fagbenle, Teyonah Parris, Luke Wilson and Linda Cardellini arrived on Netflix Dec. 12.

Throughout the series, several songs emphasize moments or themes in the show, like that of home, which is punctuated by Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue songs. A Eurythmics number sets the tone at a big scene in the finale, and a Bon Jovi song also pulls at the sinister side of the story.

At the heart of “No Good Deed” is one core mystery: who actually shot Jacob? Well, in the season finale, we finally get a definitive answer.

Throughout the series, now streaming on Netflix, the answer tends to change as pieces of the mystery are revealed. The official report has Jacob’s murderer listed as a home invader. But why would Paul (Ray Romano) and Lydia (Lisa Kudrow) go to such lengths to keep the autopsy sealed and the murder hidden then?

What’s Good: Hugh Grant does an evil version of himself and comes across exactly how you think it is. The camera work is excellent, and Thatcher shines.

What’s Bad: The film starts very intriguingly by laying out many interesting points, but when the final revelation is given, it all feels like a waste of time.

Loo Break: The last forty minutes of the film lack the energy and dread of the beginning, and you can have a break right before the ending and not lose much.

Watch or Not?: Watch only if you are a Hugh Grant fan or have nothing else to do.

Liz Feldman is back with a new series called “No Good Deed,” and just as she did in her Netflix series “Dead to Me,” she’s set up a pretty good mystery.

Now streaming on Netflix, the show centers on Paul and Lydia, who are trying to sell their very popular and desired home. For them, it’s become haunted after their son was killed there three years earlier.

His death is labeled a casualty of a home invasion, but nothing is quite what it seems on this one. And there are plenty of potential suspects in and around the neighborhood.

What would you do if an already naturally stressful life event became about 1000x more stressful? That’s one of the questions No Good Deed, Netflix’s new dark comedy drama, asks. It’s a fun setup. With also asking the big picture question of what it means to be a family and what one will do to protect that vision (along with a stacked cast), this could have been a massive hit. Unfortunately the whole ends up being less than the individual parts.

On the heels of this week’s Digital release, Heretic is up for pre-order on special edition 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray from A24.

Written and directed by A Quiet Place scribes Scott Beck & Bryan Woods, the horror-thriller stars Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, and Topher Grace.

In "Heretic," Hugh Grant does something brand new as an actor — which is pretty shocking when you consider that the guy's been a major movie star since the 1990s — and takes on a role that uses his sheepish British charm in the scariest way possible. Namely, he plays the "bad guy" (so to speak) in "Heretic," a new horror thriller from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods where two Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton stumble upon the home of a recluse named Mr. Reed (Grant). Mr. Reed invites the two girls into his home, but before long, they realize he may not be receptive to their invitation into the Mormon faith, and the situation is actually much worse than Mr. Reed just being an unwilling participant; they're actively in danger in his house.

It is noteworthy as the cinemas are filled with major tentpole movies. Amidst that, Hugh’s film achieved a remarkable feat, which boosts the confidence of filmmakers who create small-budget movies. Horror movies have been performing well this year, and some of them include Smile 2, Terrifier 3, Alien: Romulus, and more. Grant’s film is an American psychological horror film by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The film’s cast includes Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, and Topher Grace.

2024 has been a pretty up and down year for horror so far. Movies like Longlegs have received great reviews, along with some other well-received hits such as Speak No Evil and Smile 2 For some of these titles, critical praise has been matched with box office success. Longlegs, for instance, is the no. 3 horror film of the year, making over $74 million domestically. Two franchise horror films also managed to cross the $100 million at the domestic box office, including Alien: Romulus and A Quiet Place: Day One.

On the other hand, a series of horror films have underperformed their high expectations. Abigail, while well-reviewed, struggled to make a huge impact at the box office, making only $42.7 million. This was not likely enough to recoup its estimated $28 million budget. A similar fate was true for The First Omen, another film whose critical reviews were far more fruitful than its ticket sales.

It’s easier to imagine selling A24 on a complex theological discussion masquerading as a horror-comedy about two missing Mormons — but it’s not that much easier.

A dialogue-heavy indie about society’s failing faith in God, the surprisingly heady abduction thriller found unlikely success in an eclectic month for genre.
