A24's religious-themed horror flick, Heretic, recently landed on Max after an impressive run in theaters, and it's pulling in massive viewership numbers for the streamer.
Per FlixPatrol, Heretic is the most popular film on Max, just days after landing on the streaming service. The Hugh Grant-led film beat out the Oscar-winning animated film Flow, which ranks second on the list, and the recently added video game adaptation Assassin's Creed, which comes in at third. Heretic also ranks third among all movies and television shows on the platform. During its theatrical run, Heretic took home $58 million at the worldwide box office against a reported budget of $10 million. The film received tons of praise from critics upon release, earning a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, while Grant earned some awards recognition for his performances as the villainous Mr. Reed. Grant was nominated at the BAFTA Awards, Critics' Choice Awards, and Golden Globes for his performance.

Mr. Reed’s (Hugh Grant) twisted game to further exploit the "one true religion" leads to quite the perilous predicament for Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) in the psychological thriller Heretic. The film was a bona fide box office hit, making $58.1 million worldwide against a production budget of only $10 million, and the horror flick is now the No. 1 movie streaming on Max. It's even outperforming the Oscar-winning Flow (Best Animated Feature Film), which checks in at No. 2.
Heretic’s intriguing storytelling and foreboding atmosphere definitely do the movie credit, but much of the film’s success firmly lies with its three actors. Thatcher and Paxton give powerful performances as the unsuspecting protagonists spreading the word of God, but Grant’s indelible portrayal of Mr. Reed is not to be missed. In fact, the thespian took the utmost measures to bring a sense of realism to this particular villain.

It may be hard for folks who weren't around at the time to understand, but there was a moment when Hugh Grant appeared poised to become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet.
Flashback to the spring of 1994. Bill Clinton was a popular U.S. President, everyone was drinking Zima, and moviegoers were flocking to cineplexes to see the British rom-com "Four Weddings and a Funeral." It was a surprise hit that picked up word-of-mouth steam via a slow roll-out from its distributor Gramercy Pictures, which was fortunate to have a great, immensely appealing film at a time when theaters were being inundated with dreck like "Major League II," "Cops and Robbersons" and "D2: The Mighty Ducks."
While "Four Weddings and a Funeral" is at heart an ensemble comedy, Grant's endearingly flappable demeanor and effortless delivery of the film's hilariously quippy dialogue had some critics comparing him to Hollywood's greatest Grant.

If you’re looking for new awards contender movies to watch on streaming or video on demand, your pickings are slim this post-Oscars weekend, but we do have a few suggestions for things to watch. Our list includes a top pick that just became available on subscription streaming, two other new releases on streaming, an older movie that would make for a nice triple feature with the top pick, and a past Oscar nominee recently added to Netflix.
Top pick: Heretic
Hugh Grant’s villain era continues in this twisty A24 horror movie. Sophie Thatcher (a rising scream queen whose movie Companion was one of our picks two weeks ago) and Chloe East play Mormon missionaries who try to carry the word to the wrong man, Mr. Reed. He takes them prisoner and tells them that he has found the one true religion, seemingly offering them the opportunity to escape if they renounce their faith.

Hugh Grant headlines Heretic, which is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK in February. More details here…
There’s not a word that’s been coined yet to describe the last decade of Hugh Grant’s big screen work, but few are disputing that he seems to have found a fresh seam of creativity to explore. Gone are the romcoms of old, in comes self-deprecation opposite a beloved bear, and now, a lead in a psychological chiller that’s proven really rather successful.
The film is Heretic, where Grant stars opposite Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher. On paper, it’s the kind of film that sits in the Blumhouse-style of modern horror: a relatively small cast, a contained location, and a modest budget. But for the vast bulk of its running time, Heretic is very strong. Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, it’s...

Hey, horror friends! I have not written a proper favorites list in a long time, and I am happy to be back with all of you, talking about horror and horror-adjacent things that happened this year. I tried my best to see Nosferatu (2024) before making this list, but, alas, I was not able to. My ticket is booked for the day that it comes out. One of my favorite horror films of all time is the original Nosferatu (1922).
My favorites from this year range from Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs to a Ghostface Chia Pet that I bought from Third Eye Comics while I was in Richmond, Va. So, please buckle up and take a brief journey with me as I recall the things I loved from 2024.
I have a strange relationship with Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs (2024). I came across a short teaser on YouTube, but did not know anything about the movie beforehand.

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Heretic.
The notable Monopoly monologue in the A24 psychological horror thriller Heretic offers the best piece of subtle commentary in the film's overarching message. Since releasing in theaters on November 8, 2024, Heretic has opened to strong reviews, resulting in a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90% and an audience score of 76%. Heretic stars Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed, an odd yet intelligent man who entraps two religious women, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), in a game of deep theological contemplation. It's one of several outstanding A24 movies released in 2024.
Heretic earned roughly $44.5 million during its theatrical run against a production budget of $10 million and is currently available to rent or purchase through digital platforms. Although it has yet to be released on streaming services, it's likely to be released on HBO/Max at some point in the future based on their exclusive deal with A...

In 2024, the Academy finally decided to honor the work of casting directors — and quite rightly so. They are among the very first to make the very biggest decisions about a film, and the casts they assemble tell thousands of script pages’ worth of story just by their look and expressions. However, IndieWire can say that we were spotlighting the achievements of casting directors — and the meticulous research, creativity, and intuition that all goes into creating an incredible cast — before it was cool.
Just as we’ve done in years past, we reached out to a number of the film industry’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work of film casting from this year — a dry run, perhaps, for when the Casting Oscar category launches in 2026. We asked them to reflect not just on the strength of the performances and how directors utilize their actors but...

The living room, an interior designer once said, is the temple of the soul.
That thought takes on a whole new meaning during the taut 20 opening minutes of “Heretic,” which is set entirely within the front sitting room of the grinning Englishman Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), whose name, if pronounced with a slight garble, sounds like the word “mystery.”
On a rainy afternoon, Mr. Reed hosts two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East) for some pie and proselytizing. But this is an A24 horror movie, directed by “A Quiet Place” writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, and the uncool

This article contains spoilers for several of 2024's biggest movesAs with any year, there’s been a wide variety of movies in 2024 that left a huge impact on audiences. Whether these were big-screen blockbusters or low-budget dramas, the year has been filled with interesting movies that have left their mark - and one of the biggest ways to leave an impression on the audience is by killing off a beloved character. Deaths are a major part of any story, and often the moments that are remembered long after the credits roll. The most heartbreaking movie deaths are the ones that viewers never see coming, and 2024 had plenty of those.
However, a well-executed movie death isn’t just one that shocks and upsets the audience - it’s also got to have a very specific purpose that makes the film better through its inclusion. Even movie villain deaths can be great,...

When we first meet Lydia (Lisa Kudrow) and Paul Morgan (Ray Romano) in No Good Deed, it appears the only topic the couple can agree on is their distaste for other people. While the couple can’t see eye to eye on the sale of their house — or the state of their marriage — they can both roll their eyes at indoor scarves and their neighbor Margo (Emmy-nominated Linda Cardellini).
But, after the trials and tribulations of Season 1, the Morgans are closer than ever (and have even more reason to dislike Margo). They end No Good Deedas a united front, smiling at their daughter Emily (Chloe East) and seemingly free at last from the trauma that plagued them throughout their years in their longtime home. Paul even appears to have an appreciation for Lydia’s more mystical theories about the continued presence of their late son, Jacob (Wyatt Aubrey), whose...

Heretic, the new A24 horror film from directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, will hit streaming platforms this week after its fall theatrical release. The film follows two Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), who knock on the door of Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant) one night in the middle of a snowstorm. Lured in by Mr. Reed's friendliness and willingness to discuss religion with them, the two friends soon realize they are caught in a nightmarish and deadly maze of riddles and religious tests. And while we've already covered the film's nuanced portrayal of Mormonism and the way it proves Hugh Grant should play more villains, there is another crucial element of the story which hides in plain sight. Heretic takes elements of classic fairy tales and gives a modern, unsettling spin on them. The result is a film that feels more in the realm...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay continues with Heretic, A24’s psychological horror film from the A Quiet Place duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
Hugh Grant takes a jackhammer to his reputation for playing an absolute charmer by embodying the fiendish Mr. Reed, a homeowner who at first glance seems to happy to talk about the good Lord with a pair of devout missionaries named Sister Barnes (Yellowjackets‘ Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East of The Fabelmans) from the Church of Latter Day Saints.
“People think we’re weird,” admits Sister Paxton. “That South Park musical kind of makes fun of us.”
But the two young missionaries are then forced to prove their faith by becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse with Reed. Deadline’s Damon Wise describes the movie as “a genuinely different kind of horror, one that uses conventions from all across the genre...

Liz Feldman’s No Good Deed has suspense, emotion and humor all in one. The murder mystery series starring Lisa Kudrow, Ray Romano, Abbi Jacobson, Denis Leary, Poppy Liu. O-t Fagbenle, Teyonah Parris, Luke Wilson and Linda Cardellini arrived on Netflix Dec. 12.
Throughout the series, several songs emphasize moments or themes in the show, like that of home, which is punctuated by Ozzy Osbourne and Motley Crue songs. A Eurythmics number sets the tone at a big scene in the finale, and a Bon Jovi song also pulls at the sinister side of the story.
Several other original songs performed by different characters put some spin on the series, which follows the Morgans, Lydia (Kudrow) and Paul (Romano) as they attempt to sell their house to reasonable buyers so that they can move on from a tragic event that happened there a few years ago. Thus, three couples — Leslie (Jacobson...

Note: The following contains major spoilers for the “No Good Deed” finale
At the heart of “No Good Deed” is one core mystery: who actually shot Jacob? Well, in the season finale, we finally get a definitive answer.
Throughout the series, now streaming on Netflix, the answer tends to change as pieces of the mystery are revealed. The official report has Jacob’s murderer listed as a home invader. But why would Paul (Ray Romano) and Lydia (Lisa Kudrow) go to such lengths to keep the autopsy sealed and the murder hidden then?
Well, because it wasn’t a home invader. As the series progresses, it initially looks like perhaps Paul or Lydia themselves shot their son. When they enlist the help of Paul’s brother Mikey (Denis Leary) to cover things up, it definitely looks like a murder.
But, in the penultimate episode of the season, we discover that...

Heretic Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, and Topher Grace
Director: Scott Beck and Bryan Woods
Heretic Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
What’s Good: Hugh Grant does an evil version of himself and comes across exactly how you think it is. The camera work is excellent, and Thatcher shines.
What’s Bad: The film starts very intriguingly by laying out many interesting points, but when the final revelation is given, it all feels like a waste of time.
Loo Break: The last forty minutes of the film lack the energy and dread of the beginning, and you can have a break right before the ending and not lose much.
Watch or Not?: Watch only if you are a Hugh Grant fan or have nothing else to do.

Liz Feldman is back with a new series called “No Good Deed,” and just as she did in her Netflix series “Dead to Me,” she’s set up a pretty good mystery.
Now streaming on Netflix, the show centers on Paul and Lydia, who are trying to sell their very popular and desired home. For them, it’s become haunted after their son was killed there three years earlier.
His death is labeled a casualty of a home invasion, but nothing is quite what it seems on this one. And there are plenty of potential suspects in and around the neighborhood.
Here are the faces you’ll need to know.
Netflix Lydia Morgan (Lisa Kudrow)
Lydia Morgan is a renowned pianist, but after her son is killed, she can’t keep her hands from shaking and temporarily loses her ability to play. She’s brought to life by “Friends” and “Time Bandits” star Lisa Kudrow.

What would you do if an already naturally stressful life event became about 1000x more stressful? That’s one of the questions No Good Deed, Netflix’s new dark comedy drama, asks. It’s a fun setup. With also asking the big picture question of what it means to be a family and what one will do to protect that vision (along with a stacked cast), this could have been a massive hit. Unfortunately the whole ends up being less than the individual parts.

One of the best horror movies of the year, Heretic, is ready to scare up even more followers now that the horror film is available on VOD through the usual platforms, including Amazon, YouTube, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, formerly Vudu. Hugh Grant’s performance as the conniving Mr. Reed is well worth the cost of renting ($19.99) or owning ($24.99) the must-see movie alone, and directors Bryan Woods and Scott Beck’s collaboration made good at not only the box office, but with theatergoers and critics alike.
Since beginning its theatrical run on Nov. 8, Heretic has made $27.5 million domestically and an additional $13.2 million overseas for a worldwide total of $40.7 million (per The Numbers). And with a reported budget under $10 million, the box office hit quadrupled its production cost. Meanwhile, while the majority of horror films don’t usually impress the critics, they were bowled over by A24's gripping macabre project.

“Heretic” is an A24 horror movie starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East. It is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
In a surprising turn of events, Hugh Grant takes center stage in a genre that’s far from his usual comedic stomping grounds. “Heretic” is a religious horror film that could have easily fallen into the realm of mediocrity, but thanks to the deft hands of directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, it emerges as a genuinely good—perhaps even exceptional—piece of cinema.
The film follows two young Mormon girls who are invited into the home of an older man. As they begin to discuss religious precepts, the man, who appears to be highly knowledgeable, starts to challenge and question the girls’ beliefs. This simple premise sets the stage for a thought-provoking exploration of faith and doubt.

This simple premise sets the stage for a thought-provoking exploration of faith and doubt.

In "Heretic," Hugh Grant does something brand new as an actor — which is pretty shocking when you consider that the guy's been a major movie star since the 1990s — and takes on a role that uses his sheepish British charm in the scariest way possible. Namely, he plays the "bad guy" (so to speak) in "Heretic," a new horror thriller from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods where two Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton stumble upon the home of a recluse named Mr. Reed (Grant). Mr. Reed invites the two girls into his home, but before long, they realize he may not be receptive to their invitation into the Mormon faith, and the situation is actually much worse than Mr. Reed just being an unwilling participant; they're actively in danger in his house.

A24's new horror movie with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score is now available to watch digitally. Founded in 2012, the independent studio's first film was A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III in 2013 and A24's first foray into horror, Robert Eggers' The Witch, followed in 2015. Since then, the indie studio has developed a reputation for its distinct brand of horror, which often prioritizes atmospheric horror over jump scares, as seen in Ari Aster's Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau is Afraid.
As 2024 comes to an end, it has been an incredibly strong year for A24, with almost every one of its releases, save for The Front Room (42%) and Y2K (45%), receiving Certified Fresh scores on Rotten Tomatoes, including Love Lies Bleeding (94%), Civil War (81%), We Live in Time (78%), and more. This trend of widely positive critical reviews extends to A24 horror as well, with their 2024 horror releases including I Saw the TV Glow...

Alrighty, the 2025 Golden Globes nominations are in, so, let’s talk snubs. While some films and performances got the love they deserved, there are a bunch of amazing ones that were totally left out. Honestly, it’s like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had their own agenda and just decided to pretend some of these flicks didn’t exist. How can we overlook movies like Smile 2 or It Ends With Us? These films were truly buzzing all year, with top-notch performances, unique storytelling, and killer direction, but nothing. Nada.
And we don’t even want to get started with Nosferatu. It’s a literal chilling masterpiece that practically reinvented the gothic horror. No love? Really, rude. Then there’s Heretic, which apparently had audiences questioning with its mind-bending plot. Meanwhile, We Live In Time brought heartfelt drama and stunning performances, and somehow still flew under the radar. Really, it...

Heretic Box Office (North America): Achieves A Remarkable Feat ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Heretic is focused on its box office goals as it sets a new record with its domestic gross this weekend. The film is headlined by Hugh Grant, who is best known for his romantic movies. However, he has been taking adverse roles in the last few years, and the actor also enjoys playing such roles. Scroll below for more.
It is noteworthy as the cinemas are filled with major tentpole movies. Amidst that, Hugh’s film achieved a remarkable feat, which boosts the confidence of filmmakers who create small-budget movies. Horror movies have been performing well this year, and some of them include Smile 2, Terrifier 3, Alien: Romulus, and more. Grant’s film is an American psychological horror film by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The film’s cast includes Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, and Topher Grace.

2024 has been a pretty up and down year for horror so far. Movies like Longlegs have received great reviews, along with some other well-received hits such as Speak No Evil and Smile 2 For some of these titles, critical praise has been matched with box office success. Longlegs, for instance, is the no. 3 horror film of the year, making over $74 million domestically. Two franchise horror films also managed to cross the $100 million at the domestic box office, including Alien: Romulus and A Quiet Place: Day One.
On the other hand, a series of horror films have underperformed their high expectations. Abigail, while well-reviewed, struggled to make a huge impact at the box office, making only $42.7 million. This was not likely enough to recoup its estimated $28 million budget. A similar fate was true for The First Omen, another film whose critical reviews were far more fruitful than its ticket sales.

It’s easier to imagine selling A24 on a complex theological discussion masquerading as a horror-comedy about two missing Mormons — but it’s not that much easier.
Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (“A Quiet Place”), “Heretic” hit theaters on November 8 after premiering to mostly positive reviews at TIFF. A dialogue-heavy indie about society’s failing faith in God, the surprisingly heady abduction thriller found unlikely success in an eclectic month for genre. That was true even against the back half of major October titles such as “Terrifier 3” and “Smile 2.”
The dense script is a tough sell. A villainous Hugh Grant is cast against type — delivering what may be cinema’s all-time best Jar Jar Binks joke — doesn’t come with a built-in crwods Beck and Woods’ mid-budget genre experiment follows odd-couple missionaries, Sister Paxton (Chloe East) and Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher), into the serpentine...
