Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter had a short-lived marriage that lasted for around two years. The duo fell in love working on the set of Dexter together, eventually getting married in 2008 on New Year’s Eve. The couple eloped appearing publically as a married couple in January 2009, during the Golden Globes Awards.

However, despite the couple splitting from each other, it seemed that the duo remained good friends after their divorce, joking around on set and having a great time either way. The duo was unlike some couples in Hollywood, that usually have such strained relationships that they cannot work on sets of the same films together, even putting it into their contracts to avoid each other. However, that was not the case with Hall and Carpenter.

Given their instrumentation and mountain-music harmonies, the Avett Brothers have always been naturals when it comes to country covers. When they last appeared on Austin City Limits in 2014, they zipped through a version of George Jones’ “The Race Is On.”
For their next spot on the show, airing Saturday, Jan. 18th, the Avetts devote most of their set to songs from last year’s The Avett Brothers. But the band also offers up another country homage, this one both cheeky and a little touching.

The Avett Brothers last released a full-length studio album in 2019, continuing their steady collaborative streak with Rick Rubin on Closer Than Together. In the five years since, the band and producer have been putting together the pieces for their next record, a self-titled album set for release on May 17. Their first offering from The Avett Brothers, a nine-track project, is the devotional “Love of a Girl.”

In the cramped green room at Raleigh’s Lincoln Theatre, Charles Wesley Godwin pulled his bandmates in for a huddle.
A few feet away, on center stage, Bj Barham and his daughter, Pearl, were already talking up Godwin to the sold-out crowd. A new generation has discovered the joys of wintry, isolation-fueled ballads, but Greg Brown has been wallowing in them for four decades. With songs that straddle folk and country and resist outsized hooks in favor of gaunt, gently rippling chord changes, the Iowa-based troubadour, who’s released over two dozen records, has been a cult figure for a reason. He’s only approached a degree of mainstream exposure here and there (appearances on Prairie Home Companion and taking on the voice of Hades on Anaïs Mitchell’s original Hadestown album). But along the way,...

In 2019, the Avett Brothers announced that their music would be featured in a new musical originally slated to debut in June 2020. A year-plus pandemic later, the folk-rock group is premiering the title track to Swept Away.

The Avett Brothers have released “Bang Bang,” a smoldering preview of their forthcoming album Closer Than Together. The piano ballad finds the group fired up and furious about American gun violence, tackling everything from the presence of guns in movies to the proliferation of assault-rifles used by men “pretending to be Rambo.”
“Conceal and carry your fear,” sings Seth Avett on the sparse track, “Don’t need no weapons here.”
Earlier this summer, the Avett Brothers released a statement accompanying the announcement of their socially conscious new album, Closer Than Together.

The late soul singer Charles Bradley was deep into chemotherapy when he entered a home recording studio in Queens, New York. In the fall of 2016, he’d been diagnosed with stomach cancer, forcing him to cancel a North American tour in support of his third album, Changes. Weak, but resilient, Bradley entered the recording booth and began to record the vocals for a new song, “Lonely As You Are,” on the spot.
The resulting track is a heart-rending ballad that deftly mixes Bradley’s powerhouse vocals with country-tinged soul groove.

Fans wedged into every nook and cranny of Spicewood ranch in Luck, Texas, on Thursday night for Willie Nelson’s Luck Reunion — many trying to get a good view of Lukas Nelson. They stood along the wooden sidewalks in front of the old storefronts, on the steps of the western saloon and jailhouse, and the fortunate few looked down from a balcony above the general store. There, on stage, was Lukas, in a tall top hat and a black coat with his arms outstretched, doing a half turn to present all before them.

This year brought its share of spirited (to put it mildly) discussion in country music, with multiple genre-crossing collaborations reaching the charts. Additionally, 2018 saw winning collaborations in the country mainstream, like Dierks Bentley and Brothers Osborne’s “Burning Man,” as well as in Americana, with Robbie Fulks and Linda Gail Lewis’ “Wild!

The Avett Brothers haven’t released an album of new music in more than two years, but on Wednesday night they gave fans a taste of some fresh material on Late Night With Seth Meyers with a joyous sing-along called “Roses and Sacrifice.”
A reflection on love, commitment, and compromise, “Roses and Sacrifice” mixes the sweet with the thorny, although Seth Avett’s powerful tenor helps skew the mood in favor of the former. Brother Scott adds a wailing harmonica solo mid song, before joining in to harmonize on the last verse.

In 2012, when Judd Apatow used the Avett Brothers' buoyant, love-drunk ballad "Live and Die" in his coming-of-middle-age comedy This Is 40, it was a choice that reflected a passion for the band's heartfelt folk pop. "Their music is about reaching out and trying to connect with other people, as well as the obstacles of love," says Apatow. "And I try to express some of the same things in the realm of comedy."

For many, Judd Apatow is purely thought of as a sort of comedy godfather. Between writing, directing, and producing, he’s responsible for some of the biggest comedies of the past decade. That’s both on television as well as in theaters. However, he offers more than that, as he’s occasionally supported smaller and more independent fare, helping to get it showcased. Today, he goes the documentary route for just the second time (after the Espn 30 for 30 offering Doc & Darryl) with May It Last: A Portrait Of The Avett Brothers, something very different than you’d expect from Apatow. It’s a one night only special event that celebrates not just a band, but a quieter style of musical documentary filmmaking. In addition, it proves even further that Apatow is a supreme talent in this business. This documentary is a look at North Carolina based folk rock band The Avett Brothers.

With most behind-the-scenes, making-of music docs, you can feel something ominous in the air. Either the artists on display are on the verge of a schism or someone’s personal life is threatening to undo the collective goals of the group. “May It Last,” a documentary from Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio about the North Carolina-based folk-rock group The Avett Brothers, never stumbles on that central, driving conflict. Instead, the film presents the story of two brothers, Scott and Seth Avett, who have lived their separate lives without being fueled by the need to bring seismic change to the music industry or each other. “May It Last” still places The Avett Brothers in the context of a musical quest but finds an equally satisfying path in the ordinary elements of their lives.
