The following contains major spoilers for St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 12, "Buffalo Bruce and Matty the Kid," which debuted Tuesday, Feb. 18 on NBC.
St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 12, "Buffalo Bruce and Matty the Kid," will be remembered as the one with the plague cat. The NBC sitcom isn't quite as lovably strange as usual -- but this episode written by Mythic Quest alum Naomi Ekperigin still has some good laughs built into it. More interestingly, the subplot involving Serena's birthday gets surprisingly saccharine.
"Buffalo Bruce and Matty the Kid" focuses on Bruce and Matt being assigned to capture an emotional support cat that's running loose around the hospital. Like everything at St. Denis, this doesn't go according to plan, which is where most of the humor comes from. Yet the episode is a bit awkward when it delves into more emotional territory.

Just six episodes into its freshman run, St. Denis Medical‘s strong vital signs earned it a quick Season 2 renewal. But before the NBC comedy’s hospital staff can make it to a completely new season, they’ll have to survive a finale that, as star Allison Tolman puts it, sends things “off the rails” at the titular medical center.
“The finale of this season is the most ‘oh no’ [that nurse Alex feels],” Tolman recently told TVLine at the Scad TVfest in Atlanta. “And it’s warranted. A lot of times, when Alex is worked up about something, it’s like, ‘Girl, calm down.

St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 11, "Nobody Even Mentions the Brownies," is a classic TV sitcom hour. The episode takes something everybody hates and proves exactly why everyone hates it, by using the comedy trick of exaggeration.
"Nobody Even Mentions the Brownies" starts with Joyce telling the staff that they need to make more money -- just like every other TV hospital.

St. Denis Medical broke through in a big way when it debuted on NBC in the fall, and the network issued some exciting news on Tuesday morning:
St. Denis Medical Season 2 is a go.
The mockumentary is NBC’s first scripted renewal for the 2025-26 TV season. Make of that what you will.
(NBC)
The freshman drama averages just under 4 million viewers and has a 0.5 rating in the demo, proving that the broadcast networks still have some life left.
NBC teases that the series has reached 21.4 million viewers to date, which is astounding, but it doesn’t hold much water when the network doesn’t break it down.
The Live + 7 numbers are enough to keep it on the air for several years.

The doctors and nurses of St. Denis Medical will remain on call at NBC.
The network has ordered a second season of the comedy series, a mockumentary following the overworked staff at an underfunded hospital in Oregon. The renewal comes as the show is set to return from hiatus Tuesday night for the second half of its season.
St. Denis Medical is the first of NBC’s rookie series to earn a renewal for the 2025-26 season. Fellow comedy Happy’s Place, starring Reba McEntire, scored an order for additional episodes in November, usually a promising sign for a series. Medical drama Brilliant Minds wrapped its 13-episode season a week ago; NBC has three dramas — Grosse Pointe Garden Society, The Hunting Party and Suits LA — due to premiere in the next several weeks.

St. Denis Medical has certainly seen a lot six episodes into its freshman run on NBC, but the next one could be the most chaotic yet. Ahead of the episode's airing, Cbr can unveil an exclusive sneak peek at the cold open, teasing the madness that happens when inmates arrive for treatment from a nearby prison.
The episode, titled "50 cc's of Kindness," is set to air on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 8 p.m. on NBC. In the sneak peek clip, Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Ron (David Alan Grier), and Alex (Allison Toman) attempt to take control with treating two prisoners who've been rushed in after an apparently violent incident took place at the prison. Of course, as also teased in the cold open, the inmates use much more "colorful" language than the patients that the medical staff are typically tending to. Check out the clip below.

NBC and Peacock's new sitcom St. Denis Medical is a mockumentary workplace comedy set in an underfunded Oregon hospital and is sure to cure your woes, at least according to critics. It avoids the tropes of other medical shows that tend to focus on flashy doctors and major crises, instead primarily focusing on nurses — the unsung heroes that keep the hospital running.
A perfectly cast Allison Tolman (Fargo) stars as a workaholic supervising nurse and mom who keeps the ER running; Wendi McLendon-Covey (a familiar face to fans of The Goldbergs and Reno 911!) plays the administrative bigwig who's focused more on accolades than patient care; and David Alan Grier takes on the role of a curmudgeonly doctor. Kahyun Kim, Josh Lawson, Kaliko Kauahi, and Mekki Leeper fill out the rest of the archetypes, including a nurse with a wild streak, a self-idolizing surgeon, and a Montana transplant with a strict...

Warning: this article contains Spoilers for St. Denis Medical.St. Denis Medical has proven its comedy chops, but NBC’s mockumentary has a romantic storyline that should be scrapped. St. Denis Medical’s wonderful cast of characters includes Mekki Leeper’s rookie Matt and Kahyun Kim’s experienced Serena among many other talented names. Matt’s character is the most overtly comedic due to his incompetence and sheltered upbringing, while Serena is a skilled nurse who knows how to diffuse any situation. The two characters come together at the closing of episode 1 (“Welcome to St. Denis”), when Serena offers Matt encouragement that awakens a puppy love in the new nurse (but nothing beyond that).
St. Denis Medical’s Superstore reunion has garnered buzz since its premiere, but there are an abundance of differences between the two shows, including the romantic potential for a slow burn. As it stands, Serena and Matt are barely coworkers,...

Abbott Elementary revived the mockumentary sitcom genre in 2021, resulting in St. Denis Medical in 2024, and allowing the newer show to emulate one of the older series' storylines (but with its own twist). The NBC medical comedy, co-created by Justin Spitzer of Superstore fame and Eric Ledgin, follows the doctors and nurses at St. Denis Medical Center in Oregon. Similar to other mockumentary sitcoms, the St. Denis Medical characters are eccentric, unique, and hilarious, forming a group with great chemistry. The series takes advantage of its cast's dynamics, just like Abbott Elementary does.

The series will return with season 1, episode 7 on Tuesday, January 14 at 8 p.m. Et. NBC's medical sitcom follows "an eclectic team of underfunded yet dedicated doctors, nurses and hospital staff, who want nothing more than to turn the hospital into an international medical destination." However, not everyone in the series shares the same approach to care.
Among the bunch is Bruce, a talented trauma surgeon whose lack of awareness often makes him appear harsh. Josh Lawson (Superstore), who plays the character, admits that his attitude does put him at risk of being too mean. It was important to the actor to make it known that Bruce never intends to hurt others, as his actions come from a place of ignorance rather than cruelty.

If anyone knows the potency of good sitcom chemistry, it’s probably Eric Ledgin.
The writer and producer who co-created NBC’s “St. Denis Medical” has been involved with “Superstore,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “Rutherford Falls,” and recently “American Auto” — and he knows how to get an audience on his side. Sometimes it only takes a pilot, but sometimes it takes several episodes or a full season to invest in a new workplace comedy, like the hospital mockumentary which premiered in November.
The core cast includes a “Superstore” mainstay (Kaliko Kauahi), familiar TV faces, comedy legends (David Alan Greer and Wendi McLendon Covey), and a fresh face from the film world (Kahyun Kim). Viewers get to know them little-by-little, but the actors gel enough to be a driving narrative force — a welcome result for a casting process that Ledgin told IndieWire “almost killed me.” Even with talented performers coming...

Abbott Elementary has revived the mockumentary genre on network TV, opening the door for other shows to join in on the fun, including one new, critically acclaimed NBC series that premiered in 2024. Abbott Elementary has been nominated for and won many awards, including the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Quinta Brunson and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Sheryl Lee Ralph.

A series like The Office or Parks and Recreation has the ability to make the ordinary, funny. Or at least help you find the humor. Last week, we were introduced to the staff at St. Denis Medical. The half hour comedy tells the tale of a small group of health care workers dealing with the inane and the insane. The cast includes the very funny David Alan Grier, Allison Tolman, and Wendi McLendon-Covey. The story of an underfunded hospital, and all the problems that go with it also includes Josh Lawson, Kaliko Kauahi, Kahyun Kim, and Mekki Lepper. You can check out new episodes on Tuesday, at 8 Pm Et.
