Exclusive: Derry Girls star Louisa Harland is leading RTÉ’s adaptation of Marian Keyes’ The Walsh Sisters, which has unveiled cast including Debi Mazar.

Harland will play the troubled Anna Walsh and is joined by BAFTA nominee Máiréad Tyers, who led Disney+’s Extraordinary and has been cast as Helen. Making up the rest of the Walsh family are Stefanie Preissner, who plays Maggie and is also writing most of the show, Danielle Galligan (House of Guinness) bringing oldest sister Claire to life and rising talent Caroline Menton, who takes on sister Rachel.

Every year, TV networks and streamers produce fantasy shows. In 2024, we got new seasons of House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power, and there’s always more around the corner. 2025 will feature the returns of shows like The Wheel of Time and the debut of a new Game of Thrones prequel in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, both of which we can see getting a lot of love and acclaim.

But sadly, some shows slip under the radar. Some fail to find an audience and end before their time, while others survive and have a chance to grow their viewership. Here are eight fantasy series from 2024 that deserved more attention and provided fantasy lovers with great entertainment!

Despite strong reviews for the first season, Renegade Nell won’t be returning for season two at Disney+.

Renegade Nell debuted on Disney+ in March 2024 to good reviews, but that didn’t save the Sally Wainwright penned series from getting axed from the streamer’s slate.

“Disney+ Original series, Renegade Nell, will not be returning for a second season on the service. We’re incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor. We’d like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast – led by Louisa Harland – and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future,” said a Disney spokesman, as reported by Deadline.

In a recent interview, Renegade Nell director and executive producer Ben Taylor offered some insight into the possibility of a second season.

All eight episodes of Renegade Nell's first season hit Disney+ on March 29. By the next day, the show had a 79% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes from reviewers and an 84% Audience Score.

Both are set at the turn of the 17th to 18th centuries and, as with “Pirates,” the period details in “Renegade Nell” abound. It feels bizarre to say that a series that features magic as a core, inextricable component can feel deeply grounded in reality. But such is the case with Renegade Nell, Disney+'s new series from Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright led by Derry Girls star Louisa Harland. It's appropriate, perhaps, for a series whose central premise and plot resemble old ballads and poems of notorious highwaymen, those characters who are out on a quest for justice or revenge, with elements of danger, romance, mystery, and maybe even the supernatural thrown in.

Having established herself at the BBC with the police procedural “Happy Valley” and the crossdressing costume drama “Gentleman Jack,” screenwriter-turned-showrunner Sally Wainwright has followed countless creatives and taken the Disney shilling to initiate her latest project. You can hardly blame her, given the reduced offer the cash-strapped British broadcaster is now extending even to its more illustrious dramaturges: rarely more than three episodes per series and four characters per scene. World on Fire has come to an end after two seasons, Masterpiece on PBS executive producer Susanne Simpson revealed at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Monday.

Simpson added that the BBC decided not to renews the British series for “many different reasons.”

With a film and TV industry slightly less hampered by Hollywood strike action, Disney Plus have confirmed 2024 air dates for a bunch of UK-based series.

BAFTA-winner Sally Wainwright’s new series, Renegade Nell, has been locked in for a Spring 2024 release. Starring Louisa Harland (Orla from Derry Girls) as the titular rebel, the show finds a young woman framed for murder and inadvertently becoming the most notorious highwaywoman in 18th century England. Throw in a magical spirit played by Ted Lasso's Nick Mohammed, and we’ve got a proper fantasy action-adventure series on our hands.

Netflix Releases Trailer for “The Crown” Season 6, Part 2

Netflix has released the trailer for the second and final half of “The Crown” Season 6, concluding the reign of the award-winning period drama.

Part 2 of the final season, which premiered its first four episodes on Nov. 16, will pick up in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death as Queen Elizabeth (played by Imelda Staunton) must reflect on her life and legacy and pave the way for her successors, Charles and William.

Dominic West, Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Claudia Harrison, Olivia Williams, Bertie Carvel, and Salim Daw make up the rest of the ensemble with Ed McVey, Luther Ford, and Meg Bellamy joining in the final part as Prince William, Prince Harry, and Kate Middleton, respectively.

Disney+ has shared the first photos from the upcoming fantasy adventure series Renegade Nell, coming to the streaming service in spring 2024. The eight-episode season stars Derry Girls‘ Louisa Harland as a woman who’s framed for a crime she didn’t commit.

Set in the 18th century, the action series also stars Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso) as Billy Blind, Frank Dillane (Fear the Walking Dead) as Charles Devereux, Adrian Lester (Trigger Point) as Earl of Poynton, and Alice Kremelberg (The Sinner) as Sofia Wilmot. Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis, and Derry Girls star Louisa Harland have signed on to star in Ulster American, a new stage production from Irish playwright David Ireland (Cyprus Avenue) and directed by Jeremy Herrin.

Ulster American will run at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, with previews from December 4 and opening night on December 13.

The social satire follows three characters, an Oscar-winning American actor, an English director, and a Northern Irish playwright, who are about to begin rehearsals for a new play — one that could transform each of their careers. But when it turns out that they’re not on the same page, the night threatens to spiral out of control. Siobhán McSweeney spoke candidly on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet about how much she’d like to win a BAFTA. Later that night, the “Derry Girls” actress won a BAFTA (hurray!) — for Best Comedy Actress for the fourth and final season of the hit Northern Irish comedy.

In the Netflix show, she plays nun Sister Michael, who acts as a foible for the main group of Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn), who try to make it through school during the Troubles in 1990s Northern Ireland. As Sister Michael, she rules the school the girls (and James) attend with an iron fist. Being a nun isn’t some higher calling to her, it’s a job — with free accommodation. As Sister Michael, McSweeney is dry, deadpan, and constantly provides the show with some of its best laughs and most iconic lines.

Since he was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA (which he later won) for his scene-stealing supporting performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, there’s been much talk about Barry Keoghan’s inspiring rise to fame.

As will likely be etched into Irish folklore as his Hollywood trajectory continues its sharp ascent, the Dubliner — born in one of the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods — would spend seven years in foster homes as a child. It was only around 2008, aged 16, when Keoghan’s love of movies was piqued by an ad in a shop window looking for actors for a new crime drama that was being shot locally. After four years and three seasons, the beloved Derry Girls series has come to an inevitable and bittersweet end. Following the story of a group of friends growing up in Derry, Northern Ireland during The Troubles, Derry Girls blends the reality of teenage growing pains against the backdrop of war. For Erin Quinn (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla McCool (Louisa Harland), Clare Devlin (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle Mallon (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell), and her cousin James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn), the politics of their city are just another part of daily life as they come to terms with growing up and finding their place in an ever-changing world.
