The Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso premiered in 2020 and aired for three seasons to critical acclaim. The show drew viewers in with exceptional performances, outrageous humor, uplifting tone, and more. There is much buzz on social media about a fourth season of the series. But until then, viewers continue to look for another series to fill the void.
Comedy fans are always searching for another intelligent comedy to keep them entertained. Ted Lasso set the bar fairly high, but the list below will certainly give fans some new series to keep them entertained.

Vampire horror is a genre full of expectations and conventions, but several amazing vampire films and TV shows from the 2020s have started to turn the genre on its head. This is in part due to several incredible vampire acting performances, but also groundbreaking writing and design. These stories have begun to chart new paths for the vampire genre, taking a monster well-known by many and putting vampire characters into fresh situations.
The 2020s aren't the only years full of great vampire media, making great changes to a long-beloved genre. The 2000s were full of underrated vampire classics, but the biggest changes seem to have come in more recent years. These changes are most evident in the stories being told, as most vampire media in the past have either portrayed them as static monsters or romantic leads.

There were some good fantasy TV shows this year, but some deserved a lot more attention!
Every year, TV networks and streamers produce fantasy shows. In 2024, we got new seasons of House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power, and there’s always more around the corner. 2025 will feature the returns of shows like The Wheel of Time and the debut of a new Game of Thrones prequel in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, both of which we can see getting a lot of love and acclaim.
But sadly, some shows slip under the radar. Some fail to find an audience and end before their time, while others survive and have a chance to grow their viewership. Here are eight fantasy series from 2024 that deserved more attention and provided fantasy lovers with great entertainment!

2024 had a lot of TV shows ending, which included plenty of sci-fi and fantasy shows. And some of those endings left fans hungry for more!
It's no surprise that TV networks and streamers have a bad habit of canceling some shows too early. That's more true for sci-fi and fantasy shows that have a harder time capturing a large audience to justify their large budgets. It's jarring that some shows barely seemed to get out of the gate before being cut short. From famous shows to more overlooked ones, here's a look at the sci-fi/fantasy show cancellations that really angered folks in 2024!

Some may argue that this Star Wars show about a pair of Force-sensitive sisters was bad.

Lisa McGee's runaway hit Derry Girls, which first premiered on Channel 4 before moving to Netflix, follows Northern Irish teenagers Erin Quinn (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla McCool (Louisa Harland), Claire Devlin (Nicola Coughlan), and Michelle Malon (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell) and the "wee English fella" James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn) as they navigate their teenage years in Derry, against the backdrop of the Troubles. The series, especially in its final season, featured a host of iconic cameos featuring but not limited to Fatboy Slim, Conleth Hill (of Game of Thrones fame), and even Chelsea Clinton. It was a surprise cameo in the Season 3 premiere that took the cake, however, as viewers were shocked to see none other than Liam Neeson appear as a Royal Ulster Constabulary officer.

Exclusive: Sally Wainwright’s Renegade Nell will not make it past a first season on Disney+.
The series about a quick-witted outlaw in 18th century England, which was the storied British scribe’s first for a streamer, launched several months back. We are told it hasn’t reached the threshold for a Disney+ renewal based on several metrics. Cast, creatives and production staff at the show’s producer Lookout Point have been told.
Renegade Nell was unveiled three years ago with fanfare and was one of the highest profile series to be commissioned out of Disney+’s UK office.
Starring Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland, the show followed the eponymous Nell, who finds herself framed for murder and unexpectedly becomes the most notorious outlaw in England. But when a magical spirit called Billy Blind appears, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. Cast also included Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed and Joely Richardson.

Nicola Coughlan shines as Clare in Derry Girls, showcasing her comedic and emotional range. Bridgerton's Penelope and Derry Girls' Clare, while teenagers, navigate society differently due to their historical contexts and social backgrounds. Bridgerton and Derry Girls offer contrasting yet impactful performances from Coughlan, highlighting her versatility in different genres and time periods.
Bridgerton may be Nicola Coughlan's biggest success to date, but there is another TV show she's synonymous with, and it's a must-watch for fans of the Irish-born actress. Coughlan currently stars in Bridgerton as Penelope Featherington, a wallflower in society who chooses to wield a pen as a weapon to criticize the high and mighty as the elusive Lady Whistledown. Now, with Bridgerton season 3 bringing Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope's love story center stage, all eyes look to what is next for the actress. However, some of Nicola Coughlan's best work lies further back in her career.

Renegade Nell was a “chance to reimagine what a Disney hero is.” So says director Ben Taylor, who directs and executive produces the Disney+ original series created by Sally Wainwright. Taylor, known for Sex Education and Catastrophe, says Louisa Harland‘s ass-kicking Nell Jackson “makes absolute sense as the third part of that triangle” made up of powerful female characters created by Wainwright, such as Happy Valley‘s Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) and Gentleman Jack‘s Anne Lister (Suranne Jones). In the eight-episode Renegade Nell, Nell Jackson, a quick-witted and courageous young woman, finds herself framed for murder and unexpectedly becomes the most notorious outlaw in 18th-century England. But when a magical spirit called Billy Blind (Ted Lasso‘s Nick Mohammed) appears, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. The cool, and occasionally inconvenient, thing about Nell’s powers is that they activate when she’s in danger.

With swordfights, corsets, a sprinkle of magic and an array of truly magnificent hats (including one worn by a poodle), new Disney+ original series “Renegade Nell” has more than a touch in common with that other swashbuckling Disney staple “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Both are set at the turn of the 17th to 18th centuries and, as with “Pirates,” the period details in “Renegade Nell” abound. In Nov. 2022, just as the show moved into the final phase of production, Variety was invited to visit Ealing Studios in West London where the wood-panelled Stuart-era sets were studded with quill pens and wax seals while an imposing portrait of Joely Richardson — in costume as the extravagantly-outfitted and wigged baddie Lady Eularia Moggerhangar — hung on the wall.

Disney has a new hero in Renegade Nell. Derry Girls‘ Louisa Harland anchors the series as the titular Nell Jackson (not Nellie!), whose sudden superpowers gifted to her by the magical spirit Billy Blind (Ted Lasso‘s Nick Mohammed) make her everyone’s prime target. Be they friend or foe, Nell leaves everyone in awe of her strength and skill — things she must put to good use when she’s framed for murder and goes on the run to prove her innocence and protect her family. Co-starring in the series created by Sally Wainwright, the mind behind Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack, are Joely Richardson as Lady Eularia Moggerhanger and Alice Kremelberg as Sofia Wilmot. Eularia is more obsessed with Nell, whereas Sofia is her green-with-envy nemesis. “Sofia would be incredibly jealous that she has this power. She’s never seen anyone do anything like this,” Kremelberg tells TV Insider above.

“I’m beginning to wonder if you’re not destined for very great things, Nelly Jackson. I’m beginning to wonder if you’ve been sent to the planet for something special.” So Nell (Louisa Harland) is told midway through Disney+’s Renegade Nell, but by that point the prediction feels like a wild understatement. After all, it’s coming from Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed), the mysterious sprite who occasionally grants her otherworldly gifts of strength, speed and invulnerability. Surely the narrative gods never intended her to apply such strange talents to a humdrum life.
What that specific “something special” might be, however, proves more difficult to pin down. Nell accomplishes plenty over the adventure’s first season, such that this common nobody even gets tangled up in the struggle between Queen Anne (Jodhi May) and the Jacobite traitors who would overthrow her. But Renegade Nell never does deliver on...

Happy Valley writer Sally Wainwright returns with a surprising addition to her already jam-packed repertoire with this fun and beautifully acted action-packed adventure for Disney+.
Renegade Nell stars Derry Girls alum Louisa Harland as Nell Jackson, a feisty highwaywoman in 1700s Britain. Nell finds herself framed for murder and becomes a female highwayman in 18th century England, soon becoming the most feared highwaywoman in the country. But when a magical spirit called Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed) appears, Nell realises her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined.
Far from being a straightforward historical romp, this is Wainwright’s unexpected foray into the fantasy genre. It is also the perfect vehicle for Harland who appears to be having a whale of a time here.
We spoke to Harland and co-stars Nick Mohammed, Adrian Lester, Joely Richardson, Frank Dillane, Alice Kremelberg, newcomer Jake Dunn and director Ben Taylor about their experience working with the legendary writer.

It feels bizarre to say that a series that features magic as a core, inextricable component can feel deeply grounded in reality. But such is the case with Renegade Nell, Disney+'s new series from Gentleman Jack creator Sally Wainwright led by Derry Girls star Louisa Harland. It's appropriate, perhaps, for a series whose central premise and plot resemble old ballads and poems of notorious highwaymen, those characters who are out on a quest for justice or revenge, with elements of danger, romance, mystery, and maybe even the supernatural thrown in.

Having established herself at the BBC with the police procedural “Happy Valley” and the crossdressing costume drama “Gentleman Jack,” screenwriter-turned-showrunner Sally Wainwright has followed countless creatives and taken the Disney shilling to initiate her latest project. You can hardly blame her, given the reduced offer the cash-strapped British broadcaster is now extending even to its more illustrious dramaturges: rarely more than three episodes per series and four characters per scene. Imposed by post-Brexit belt-tightening, this sorry set of limitations has exasperated those obliged to work within them while dispiriting viewers, left watching the life — and the talent — drain from primetime broadcasts.
Mashing up historical and fantastical elements, the pricey-looking, eight-part “Renegade Nell” rides into a surprisingly crowded field for light period entertainments straddling the Stuart and Georgian eras, emerging after the sadly short-lived BBC comedy “The Witchfinder” and Apple TV+’s recent “The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin.” While...

1705. England is a mess. Society is crooked. The rich stamp on the poor and nobody, from the gouty magistrates to Queen “Brandy Nan” Anne, is doing a damn thing about it. The people need a hero, and Happy Valley and Gentleman Jack’s Sally Wainwright has written them one in Nelly Jackson.
Played by Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland, Nell is a kickass 18th century action hero infused with supernatural strength by her spirit sidekick Billy Blind (a winged Nick Mohammed from Ted Lasso). Between those two, Nell’s younger sisters, a formerly enslaved servant, and a louche conman, they’re going to save the world. Or maybe just Tottenham.
Renegade Nell is an eight-part British historical adventure series. In a mirror universe, it might have aired in the Saturday teatime slot on BBC One in the Doctor Who, Robin Hood, Merlin and Atlantis vein, just made with more cash and more women,...

Spring is now only a few weeks away, and this March at Disney+, a red rose is growing up out of ice frozen ground!
Probably the biggest title on the House of Mouse streamer’s calendar this month is the exclusive streaming premiere of “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version),” the ground-breaking and record-setting concert film tracking Swift’s Eras Tour. Also premiering this month, “X-Men: The Animated Series” gets a long overdue revival with the new animated series “X-Men '97,” featuring the returns of original cast members Ray Chase, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, and more. Siobhán McSweeney spoke candidly on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet about how much she’d like to win a BAFTA. Later that night, the “Derry Girls” actress won a BAFTA (hurray!) — for Best Comedy Actress for the fourth and final season of the hit Northern Irish comedy.
In the Netflix show, she plays nun Sister Michael, who acts as a foible for the main group of Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn), who try to make it through school during the Troubles in 1990s Northern Ireland. As Sister Michael, she rules the school the girls (and James) attend with an iron fist. Being a nun isn’t some higher calling to her, it’s a job — with free accommodation. As Sister Michael, McSweeney is dry, deadpan, and constantly provides the show with some of its best laughs and most iconic lines.

Since he was nominated for both an Oscar and a BAFTA (which he later won) for his scene-stealing supporting performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, there’s been much talk about Barry Keoghan’s inspiring rise to fame.
As will likely be etched into Irish folklore as his Hollywood trajectory continues its sharp ascent, the Dubliner — born in one of the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods — would spend seven years in foster homes as a child. It was only around 2008, aged 16, when Keoghan’s love of movies was piqued by an ad in a shop window looking for actors for a new crime drama that was being shot locally. Three years later, he landed a role in Irish TV series Love/Hate (which would become a breeding ground for young Irish talent), followed by 2014’s indie hit ‘72, before breaking out internationally in 2017 with both Dunkirk and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

After four years and three seasons, the beloved Derry Girls series has come to an inevitable and bittersweet end. Following the story of a group of friends growing up in Derry, Northern Ireland during The Troubles, Derry Girls blends the reality of teenage growing pains against the backdrop of war. For Erin Quinn (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla McCool (Louisa Harland), Clare Devlin (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle Mallon (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell), and her cousin James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn), the politics of their city are just another part of daily life as they come to terms with growing up and finding their place in an ever-changing world. While the five “Derry girls” friendships meld together despite their personality differences, the character of James Maguire holds a particular weight throughout the storyline.
