Host director Rob Savage makes his mainstream Hollywood debut The Boogeyman, a loose adaptation of a Stephen King short story from the co-writers of A Quiet Place. As such, it delivers some effective scares and is elevated by a trio of terrific performances, though the story itself ultimately feels a little derivative.
Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher plays Sadie Harper, a teenager whose family – younger sister Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) and therapist father Will (Chris Messina) – are still grieving the tragic loss of her mother in a recent car accident. Their lives are swiftly upended when a strange man (David Dastmalchian) seemingly commits suicide in their house, after relating a dark tale to Will about a shadow monster that killed his children.

One of the more cleverly conceived horror films to harness the constraints of Covid lockdown, Rob Savage’s Host located its horror entirely within the domestic space. The director’s newest film, The Boogeyman, a loose adaptation of Steven King’s 1978 short story, takes a similar approach, having its titular villain function as an extension of the darkest corners in an ordinary suburban home. Except that the film, without the hook of pandemic-induced isolation, feels decidedly more generic and its jump scares more traditional, as they’re not filtered through the grainy, fragmented lens of various Zoom chat boxes.
Like the traditional form of the mythical being, the Boogeyman here often hides in closets and underneath beds. But in a twist that’s in line with so much contemporary horror, it also specifically targets “the hurt and vulnerable.” In this case, it’s 10-year-old Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair) and her 16-year-old sister,...

"We're old, we should be honest with each other by now." "We're not that old." Good Deed Entertainment has revealed the official trailer for an indie romantic comedy film titled Days of Daisy, the latest feature from producer / director Alexander Jeffery. This premiered last year at Dances With Films and a few other small film festivals, and will be out to watch on VOD later this month if anyone wants to watch. The film is about a woman named Daisy, a 39 year old, a good-natured high school librarian, who desperately wants to have a baby. She meets Jack, the creative man of her dreams only to find out he does not want any children. Starring Jency Griffin Hogan as Daisy, Bryan Langlitz, Maddie Nichols, Toby Nichols, and Cathie Choppin. Featuring new music by Walker Lukens. This looks like it has some sweet moments, awkard moments, and some hilarious moments, hopefully...

Following July’s packed movie slate, more upcoming TV shows and films are beginning to roll out their trailers. “Never Have I Ever” Season 3 dropped its first trailer ahead of the August 12 premiere, while large casts have fans excited for the remaining summer TV shows, including Nick Offerman, Abbi Jacobson, Chanté Adams, D’Arcy Carden, and Roberta Colindrez in “A League of Their Own.”
We also got our first look at Ana de Armas’ upcoming performance as a fictional interpretation of Marilyn Monroe in “Blonde” as well as the trailer for the third and final season of Netflix’s “Locke & Key.” Guillermo del Toro’s stop motion animated “Pinocchio” is sure to rival Disney’s and Lionsgate’s.
We’ve rounded up all of the trailers you may have missed this week to put in one post. There were quite a few, so read below.

The media's obsession with mysteries involving twins is showing no signs of slowing down, and Netflix's latest effort looks like a surefire hit.
Michelle Monaghan is pulling double duty on this one from co-showrunners Brian Yorkey (13 Reasons Why) and Quinton Peeples (Runaways).
Given the previous shows the creatives worked on, we're inclined to believe this will have twists and turns coming from all directions, and that's what we like best.
"Echoes is a mystery thriller about two identical twins, Leni and Gina, who share a dangerous secret," the spoilery synopsis reads.
"Since they were children, Leni and Gina have secretly swapped lives, culminating in a double life as adults: they share two homes, two husbands, and a child but everything in their perfectly choreographed world is thrown into disarray when one of the sisters goes missing."
It certainly sounds similar to The CW's Ringer.

This review of “Emergency” was first published Jan. 20, 2022, after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
To walk the world knowing that you are presumed a threat is the harrowing burden at the heart of “Emergency.” That appalling reality sets three young men of color on a nightmarishly nerve-racking drive, for taking the socially acceptable right course of action in a dire situation could endanger not only their future academic prospects but also their lives.
Walking a thematic line about the racial biases that plague America’s institutions and society at large akin to other such recent indie productions as “Blindspotting,” “The Land” or “Monsters and Men,” the sophomore effort from director Carey Williams (whose debut “R#J” was a social-media take on “Romeo and Juliet”) strikes a difficult equilibrium between its disquieting observations and comedic inclinations.

“I have very little to say except that I think it very charming and kind of you all to give us your Sunday night,” said a disarming Julian Fellowes at the NYC premiere of Downton Abbey: A New Era last Sunday. Distributor Focus Features – and the broader industry — hopes audiences will give the film many more Sunday nights, and other days and dayparts, jumpstarting the return to theaters of older demos.
Downton opens this weekend on over 3,800 screens, not a specialty release but leading here as a bellwether for that elusive audience, a staple of arthouses, that had raised hopes briefly by turning out for No Die To Die last fall. Lingering Covid jitters or an entrenched streaming habit have kept the 45-plus crowd sparse in cinemas even as they flock to restaurants and other public activities. In “Vendetta,” a former U.S. Marine strikes back at the thugs who murdered his daughter, inciting a routine cycle of violence with occasional flashes of wit that feel like they were spliced in from a different, better movie. Most of those moments have little to do with the main narrative, which follows William Duncan as he tracks down the hooligans who executed his teenage daughter (Maddie Nichols) during an initiation rite.
His revenge angers Donnie Fetter (Bruce Willis), a street-level crime boss who orders his loose-cannon son Rory (Theo Rossi) to do away with William and his wife (Jackie Moore). Despite the warnings by a handwringing but ineffectual detective (Kurt Yue), who tells William violence can only beget more violence, the situation spirals out of control, as it always does in revenge thrillers of this kind. The body count starts to mount. So do the implausibilities, along with the boredom.

"Think about it statistically... how many people actually get shot by the cops?" Amazon Prime has debuted another new red band trailer for the indie film Emergency, a dramedy from filmmaker Carey Williams from the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Amazon Studios has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming feature ‘Emergency.’
Kunle and his best friend, Sean, are both seniors in college about to embark on an epic night of Spring Break parties. Sean has the whole night planned out, including every party they will hit on their “legendary tour”.
Kunle is down but mostly concerned with finishing up his mold experiment in his lab, as his acceptance to Princeton is hinging on the results. They return to their apartment to pre-game but find that their roommate, Carlos, left the door open. As they enter with trepidation, Sean and Kunle discover a drunk, semi-conscious white girl they don’t know on the floor and an oblivious Carlos, who didn’t hear her come in over the videogame blaring in his ears. Kunle wants to call the cops but Sean vehemently opposes the idea concerned how it will look when the cops show up.

Two best friends, one drunk stranger, and a pretty messed up memorable night: It’s a total “Emergency.”
Director Carey William’s Sundance breakout premieres stars Donald Elise Watkins and Rj Cyler as college seniors looking to get down for Spring Break. But their “legendary tour” of the most elite parties takes an unexpected turn after the roommates discover a drunk, semi-conscious woman (Maddie Nichols) in their apartment. Even worse: Their roommate, played by Sebastian Chacon, has no idea when the girl appeared.
As the college students debate over calling the cops to report a drunk white woman nearly passed out at the home of two Black men with their Latino roommate, they decide to transport the girl somewhere safe themselves. Meanwhile, her sister (Sabrina Carpenter) is also trying to find them.
K.D. Dávila penned the script and also was behind director Williams’ 2018 short film of the same name.

Amazon Prime just dropped the trailer for a coming-of-age movie that promises to be unlike any other. Titled "Emergency," the film features three Poc college seniors - Sean (Rj Cyler), Kunle (Donald Elise Watkins), and Carlos (Sebastian Chacon) - who are left to deal with a complex situation when they find a drunk white girl passed out on the floor of their living room after a series of fraternity parties.
Perhaps the most harrowing part of the "Emergency" trailer is that the storyline, while played up in a theatrical sense, touches upon real life. The three boys worry about calling the police and what would happen if an unconscious white girl is found in their room. "The cops are not going to listen; they're just going to come in here and see three brown guys hanging over this little white girl," Sean tells Kunle upon discovering the girl for the first time.

Emergency starts out like a typical college-aged comedy. As the school year ends, two protagonists—Kunle (Donald Watkins) and Sean (Rj Cyler), best friends with divergent personalities and points of view—prepare for an epic night out, aiming to become the first Black students to complete their university’s legendary seven-leg frat party tour. It’s easy to envision this alcohol-induced adventure turning into a checklist of romantic hookups, drunken confessions, and drugged-up shenanigans. But those cliches are all just decoration in this “night gone wrong” drama, which has much more on its mind than coming-of-age hijinks.
When the pair arrives home to change and pregame they find a white girl passed out on their living room floor. Considering the optics and potential life-threatening risks of a police encounter with three people of color, Kunle, Sean, and their Latino roommate Carlos (Sebastian Chacon) frantically huddle, decline to call an ambulance,...

“Emergency” starts out fast, loose, and boisterously nasty, with two buddies at the relatively upscale Buchanan University doing that thing that buddies do best: giving each other shit just for being who they are. Kunle (Donald Elise Watkins), in his button-down shirts, with a quick tongue but a tendency to gawk, is a straight-a straight arrow who’s invested in his studies. His parents are doctors (and rather stern African immigrants), and as he works on his senior thesis, which involves bacteria specimens, he’s doing all he can to live up to their highly disciplined dreams for him. He’s a geek, but not a dull grind; he likes to party. He just believes in the future. Sean (Rj Cyler), on the other hand, with his jewelry and sexy hair and homework-what’s-that? glare, believes in the dope he’s smoking and the moment it seals him into. He loves Kunle like a brother,...

What if there was more to the Goldilocks story?
Picture this: when the three Bears (who are in college) get home, Goldilocks has eaten all the porridge, got drunk, and is now passed out on the living room floor. However, instead of doing something about it, they drive around town for hours arguing about whether they take her to the hospital or leave her on the front doorstep of a frat house because they fear police retaliation.
I’ve just summed up director Carey Williams’ new film Emergency which had its debut at the Sundance Festival on opening night in the U.S. Dramatic Section. Starring Rj Cyler, Donald Elise Watkins, Maddie Nichols and Sabrina Carpenter, these college kids engage in errors without the comedy. The movie makes it difficult to become engrossed in its social commentary without feeling it’s making a mockery of its message. Maybe that’s the point?...

Stars: Lauren Canny, Bryan Batt, Nora-Jane Noone, Cooper Andrews, Pollyanna McIntosh, John Spud McConnell, Geraldine Singer, Maddie Nichols, Mackenzie Michelle Graham, Jeff Pope, Eugenie Bonderant, Sabrina Gennarino, Thomas Francis Murphy | Written and Directed by Pollyanna McIntosh
The debut feature from actor-turned-writer-director Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead), Darlin’ is a stand-alone sequel to Lucky McKee’s visceral 2011 horror The Woman, in which McIntosh starred as an imprisoned feral woman wreaking hell on her captors. McIntosh reprises the role here, but her film has both a different focus and a different sensibility, skilfully blending coming-of-age and horror tropes to entertaining effect.
The film begins with the still-feral, nature-dwelling Woman (McIntosh) bringing an equally feral young woman – Darlin’, played by Lauren Canny and so named for the bracelet around her wrist – to the door of a hospital and leaving her there, for reasons that will eventually become clear. Darlin’ can’t speak and behaves like a wild animal,...

When I first heard about Darlin’ I was immediately interested in seeing it. Why? Well… Pollyanna McIntosh is an actress I’ve been a fan of since her incredible performance in the Lucky McKee film The Woman back in 2011. Since then I’ve enjoyed her in numerous roles, from White Settlers to to Let Us Prey, and even her role as Jadis in The Walking Dead before I threw in the towel on that show. Seeing McIntosh go behind the camera for the first time here was something that intrigued me greatly.

Though his books were seldom issued by major publishing houses, recently deceased author Jack Ketchum has become one of the big screen’s more frequently adapted U.S. novelists. “Darlin’” isn’t based on a Ketchum tome, per se, but it does have a through line to his work: It’s a sequel to Lucky McKee’s 2011 “The Woman,” which followed Andrew van den Houten’s 2009 “Offspring,” whose print source was a sequel to Ketcham’s 1980 debut novel “Off Season.” Ketchum earned writing credits on both films, and “Off Season” was the start of a series about a cannibalistic clan in the woods of rural Maine. At the end of “The Woman,” the titular feral captive of a “civilized” family kills her keepers and returns to the wilderness, the family’s children in tow.
