Today’s guest is writer-director Anna Zlokovic, here to talk about her feature-length debut Appendage. The body horror comedy starring Hadley Robinson had its world premiere at this year’s SXSW and debuted October 2 on Hulu.

Robinson plays Hannah, a young fashion designer who seems fine on the surface but secretly struggles with debilitating self-doubt. Soon these buried feelings begin to make Hannah physically sick and sprout into a ferocious growth on her body: The Appendage. As Hannah’s health declines, The Appendage grows more powerful and begins to fuel her anxieties – her perceived lack of talent at work, her deteriorating relationships with her boyfriend and best friend, and her parents’ lack of love and understanding. At her breaking point, Hannah makes a shocking discovery: there are others out there like her.

V/H/S/85 dropped on Shudder on October 6 and is receiving tons of positive buzz. The sixth installment of the decade-spanning found footage horror anthology franchise features stories about a vicious family of cultists, a demonic earthquake in Mexico, and videotapes that showcase murders before they actually occur. This time around, filmmaker David Bruckner tackles the wrap-around story. Bruckner has helmed several features, including The Night House and Hulu's Hellraiser, in addition to directing the infamous short "Amateur Night" from the very first V/H/S.

Alex Familian, the editor and producer of Appendage, discusses his excitement about working on a relatable horror film that addresses anxiety and impostor syndrome. Familian explains that Appendage explores a unique blend of horror, comedy, and drama, creating a specific tone that he hasn't had the opportunity to work on before. The editing process for Appendage involved Adobe Premiere and After Effects, as well as collaborating closely with the VFX and Adr teams to enhance scenes and create an unsettling mood.

Adapted from an original Bite Size Halloween short, Appendage is currently available to stream on Hulu. The film follows a young fashion designer named, Hannah, who finds herself struggling for vindication in her work and home life. Writer/director/producer Anna Zlokovic helped kick off the spookiest month of the year with her new film Appendage, which recently released on Hulu. The film marks Zlokovic's feature length debut — an exciting milestone for the filmmaker. However, Appendage wasn't originally meant to be a full-length film. During the initial stages of production, Appendage was going to be part of the BIte Size Halloween lineup as a short film, but before she and her team could even complete production, it was greenlit as a feature.

Mental health is present in all facets of life — whether it's at the forefront of one's mind, a fleeting thought, or something else. More and more, conversations surrounding mental health and how to approach it without stigma have become more prevalent. In the recently released feature Appendage, mental health takes on a very literal and terrifying form. For writer/director/producer Anna Zlokovic, exploring mental health — more specifically, anxiety — through her film and the horror genre is key to her work.

Existing as a woman in today’s world is no easy task. At best, it’s anxiety-inducing and a real headache, and at worst, it can be downright deadly. Sometimes, it can be both — a fact that writer-director Anna Zlokovic is keenly aware of. The transformative body part and the film's stylistic approach were inspired by many other films that rely on the human body to deliver its horror element, says director Anna Zlokovic.

Appendage is Zlokovic's feature-length directorial debut. She was named one of "IndieWire's 28 Rising Female Filmmakers to Watch in 2023." Appendage was originally a short film of hers before she adapted it into a feature-length for Hulu with a well-rounded cast and the time to expand on the aspects of Hannah's life that cause the appendage to grow into a horrendous creature. In an interview with Cbr, Zlokovic delved into the making of Appendage and its relatability to young audiences.

“You’re a pathetic freak,” groans the gruesome being chained to a post in the basement of an apartment building. The creepy thing — disfigured and looking like Gollum’s drinking buddy — is addressing Hannah, who has chained stashed the beast away. That doesn’t stop the creature from telling Hannah how awful she is, sentiments it possesses because it came from Hannah and has been feeding off her insecurities, growing stronger and more devious by the day.

These scenes and others even more creepy play out with freaky fun aplomb in Appendage, writer/director Anna Zlokovic’s feature film debut. Say what you will about this offbeat, darkly humorous horror thriller, but it’s certainly a wakeup call to pay attention to that gnawing critical voice inside of you, which can really get the better of you. In Appendage it does, and Hannah (Hadley Robinson of Little Women) is never the same.

Writer-director Anna Zlokovic doesn't waste any time establishing the horror premise of her film Appendage. Immediately in the first scene, it's clear that there's something very wrong with aspiring fashion designer Hannah (Hadley Robinson), and things only get worse from there. So many modern horror movies rely on slow builds and vague hints that it's refreshing for Appendage to reveal its grotesque monster early on. The problem is that Zlokovic runs through so much plot so quickly that Appendage nearly exhausts its premise before it really gets going. The one-note allegory about a monstrous manifestation of the protagonist's anxieties and fears wears thin before Appendage is halfway over.

Even if its message is a bit strained, Appendage is still quite entertaining, especially when Zlokovic leans into its campier elements. Appendage introduces Hannah during a tense family dinner with her wealthy parents in the suburbs, as her mother takes passive-aggressive digs...

While horror is always a popular genre among moviegoers, they have a special attachment to it in October since Halloween brings new vibes to these films. Actress and author Emily Hampshire has a lot on her plate lately. In addition to starring in The Roku Channel’s Slip, alongside writer-director-star Zoe Lister-Jones, she’s got a handful of other projects in the pipeline, including the “funny and smart” horror film Appendage, adapted from director Anna Zlokovic’s short of the same name, and Bloody Hell, a coming of age film about sex and sexuality.

Written and directed by Anna Zlokovic, Appendage is a grotesque body horror film with a powerful message. The “evil twin” school of psychological metaphor has been a frequent device in horror fiction, and its familiarity does not much benefit the very literal-minded “Appendage.” Writer-director Anna Zlokovic’s first feature centers on a young Manhattanite whose insecurities manifest themselves in the form of a mini-me who becomes a serious usurping threat. This SXSW-launched Hulu Original is sufficiently polished to pass muster as a night’s streaming entertainment for undiscriminating genre fans. But despite the grotesque premise, its attack is a little too blunt to make much impact, whether taken as thinly-veiled satire or straight fantasy thriller.

Exclusive: Blue Fox Entertainment has picked up U.S. rights to the romantic comedy The End of Sex, starring Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek) and Jonas Chernick (James vs. His Future Self), from Vortex Media. The film directed by Sean Garrity will be released in theaters nationwide in April, hitting theaters across Canada via Vortex at the same time.

World premiering at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival, The End of Sex tells the story of a married couple (Hampshire and Chernick) who are feeling the pressures of parenting and adulthood. The snow monkey’s work is not over yet: Hulu has renewed Hit-Monkey for a second season.

Co-created and executive produced by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, the first season of the Marvel series follows a Japanese snow monkey after its tribe was slaughtered. He joins forces with the ghost of an American assassin and together, they begin killing their way through the Yakuza underworld. The first season consisted of 10 episodes and launched in November of 2021.

Holy hell this year’s SXSW Film Festival really isn’t messing around.

The previous announcement unveiled a stacked horror lineup that includes headiners Evil Dead Rise and opener Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

In addition, they revealed several prominent horror titles that will premiere as part of the Midnighters program, including the Sundance hit Talk to Me and the surprise sequel to Becky, The Wrath of Becky.

It turns out, the programming team isn’t finished!

SXSW announced another wave of film programming today, including an eighth Midnighter.

“Midnighters don’t need to be exclusively horror films, they just need to perk you up and get your blood pumping,” said Peter Hall, Film & TV Festival Programmer. “That’s why this year’s SXSW Midnighters class is a mix of horror, bone-crunching action, and mind-melting genre hybrids. 20th Digital Studio and Hulu Originals have released first-look images of Appendage, a horror comedy starring Hadley Robinson that will have its world premiere at SXSW next month. South by Southwest on Wednesday revealed the second half of its lineup for this year’s edition, set for March 10-19.

This includes Visions, the Global section presented by Mubi, 24 Beats, and Festival Favorites plus numerous additions to the Headliners, TV Premieres, Narrative and Documentary Spotlight and other sections.

New on the sked is Janine Nabers and Donald Glover’s Amazon Studios series Swarm and Lee Sung Jin’s Beef, respectively the opening- and closing-night TV premieres. They join the previously announced opening-night world premiere of Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

This year’s closing-night film will be announced closer to the event. In addition, there is another movie to be announced for the fest’s Monday, March 13 slot. The 2023 South by Southwest Festival has officially unveiled its second wave of headliners and TV premieres, including Opening and Closing Night episodic selections.

Set to take place March 10 through 19, the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals launched the 2023 Film & TV Lineup including all Visions, Global presented by Mubi, 24 Beats, and Festival Favorites plus numerous additions to Headliners, TV Premieres, Narrative and Documentary Spotlight, and other sections. Highlights include Donald Glover and Janine Nabers’ “Swarm” opening the TV program, with Lee Sung Jin’s TV series “Beef” debuting Closing Night.

South by Southwest Conference and Festivals is nearly upon us, as it runs from March 10-19 in beautiful Austin, Texas. And as such, the second wave of the 2023 Film & TV Festival Lineup including all Visions, Global presented by Mubi, 24 Beats, and Festival Favorites plus numerous additions to Headliners, TV Premieres, Narrative and Documentary Spotlight, and other sections, have been announced.

Additionally, SXSW also announced that Janine Nabers and Donald Glover’s “Swarm” and Lee Sung Jin’s “Beef” will be the Opening and Closing Night TV premieres. Donald Glover’s Amazon show Swarm, Apple’s making-of Tetris movie and Disney+ series American Born Chinese are among the new additions to the TV and film lineup at the upcoming SXSW festival.

The Elizabeth Banks-produced MGM movie Bottoms, from the team behind Shiva Baby, is set for the headliners section, joining the Taron Egerton-fronted Tetris and previously announced titles Problemista, from A24, franchise flick Evil Dead Rise, and Eva Longoria’s directorial debut, Flamin’ Hot. Dungeons & Dragons will open the fest.

Shiva Baby breakout Rachel Sennott stars in this horror-comedy as a young fashion designer feeling the pressure from her boss (a delightfully fay Eric Roberts) to come up with a great idea before her just-starting career is in jeopardy. Alone at home with the blank page in front of her, self-doubt and anxiety appears as a growth in her side, chastising every thought and decision. Anyone, especially those in creative fields, can relate to that sensation of nagging insecurity and imposter syndrome, which Anna Zlokovic captures here in wonderfully grotesque fashion. And yet, as Appendage shows, oftentimes it’s exactly this pain that can push you to find your most enlightened inspirations. — Mitchell B.

The 2022 Sundance Film Festival has unveiled its short film program, curated from an all-time high of 10,374 submissions.

The films — encompassing categories like domestic and international live-action as well as animation — will screen throughout the hybrid festival in person, at satellite venues, and online.

“Short films are such a vital part of the independent storytelling culture that Sundance Institute has consistently put its full support behind. We’re all happy for the opportunity this year’s hybrid in-person and online,” said Kim Yutani, director of programming at Sundance.

In addition to the new crop of shorts, Sundance will also roll out a retrospective titled “From The Collection,” celebrating four decades of its notable past creators. These include works from the likes of Garrett Bradley, Destin Daniel Cretton, Cheryl Dunye, Nash Edgerton, Tamara Jenkins and Taika Waititi.

The Sundance Institute today unveiled the Short Film program for the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, as well as the “From the Collection” program—a lineup of 40 shorts from festivals past that will be available for streaming online, in celebration of the nonprofit’s 40th anniversary.

This year’s festival slate comprises work from 26 countries, with 59 shorts selected for from a record 10,374 submissions. All shorts will screen in programs or preceding features in-person in Utah, with most also screening online as part of the 40th anniversary collection, and an assortment screening in person at seven Satellite Screens venues around the country during the second weekend of the festival, taking place from January 20-30.
