Hello, and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, associate editor and film writer at Deadline. Today’s guest is writer-director Anna Zlokovic, here to talk about her feature-length debut Appendage. The body horror comedy starring Hadley Robinson had its world premiere at this year’s SXSW and debuted October 2 on Hulu.
Robinson plays Hannah, a young fashion designer who seems fine on the surface but secretly struggles with debilitating self-doubt. Soon these buried feelings begin to make Hannah physically sick and sprout into a ferocious growth on her body: The Appendage. As Hannah’s health declines, The Appendage grows more powerful and begins to fuel her anxieties – her perceived lack of talent at work, her deteriorating relationships with her boyfriend and best friend, and her parents’ lack of love and understanding. At her breaking point, Hannah makes a shocking discovery: there are others out there like her.

V/H/S/85 dropped on Shudder on October 6 and is receiving tons of positive buzz. The sixth installment of the decade-spanning found footage horror anthology franchise features stories about a vicious family of cultists, a demonic earthquake in Mexico, and videotapes that showcase murders before they actually occur. This time around, filmmaker David Bruckner tackles the wrap-around story. Bruckner has helmed several features, including The Night House and Hulu's Hellraiser, in addition to directing the infamous short "Amateur Night" from the very first V/H/S.
Bruckner's wraparound story for V/H/S/85, dubbed "Total Copy," plays out like a faux documentary, telling the story of a group of scientists examining an unknown being that is able to replicate things it sees. David Bruckner recently sat down with Cbr for an exclusive chat, where the filmmaker discussed the hardships of working with practical effects while still abiding by found footage rules, the Paperclip Maximizer theory,...

Alex Familian, the editor and producer of Appendage, discusses his excitement about working on a relatable horror film that addresses anxiety and impostor syndrome. Familian explains that Appendage explores a unique blend of horror, comedy, and drama, creating a specific tone that he hasn't had the opportunity to work on before. The editing process for Appendage involved Adobe Premiere and After Effects, as well as collaborating closely with the VFX and Adr teams to enhance scenes and create an unsettling mood.
Adapted from an original Bite Size Halloween short, Appendage is currently available to stream on Hulu. The film follows a young fashion designer named, Hannah, who finds herself struggling for vindication in her work and home life. When a ghastly appendage sprouts from her body and wields her insecurities as weapons, Hannah begins to doubt the people she cares about most.

The horror movie Appendage takes everyday worries and turns them into a tangible entity that feeds off the protagonist's self-doubt. Director and writer Anna Zlokovic used practical effects to create the appendage, working closely with a special effects creature department. The heart of the horror in this story lies in its portrayal of universal mental health struggles, such as anxiety and depression, which many people can relate to.
Hulu's new movie Appendage uniquely approaches the horror genre by turning everyday worries into a tangible entity that thrives off its protagonist's self-doubt. Hannah is a resilient young fashion designer who aspires to be successful in her field and achieve the approval of her supervisor. However, the pressure to be perfect, combined with her deep-rooted insecurities, causes a vindictive appendage to grow from her body and give life to her greatest fears.

The following contains spoilers for The Mill, now streaming on Hulu.
Capitalistic torture is nothing new in the film industry. Severance exceptionally succeeded on Apple TV+, and Bong Joon-Ho's Parasite is the template for stories fighting the hard battle against greed and corruption. Sean King O'Grady's The Mill takes these concepts to another level, placing one man in a single setting with an AI watching over him.
As the director of the science fiction film, O'Grady takes the frightening notion of AI and corporate burnout and proposes a new reality where Artificial Intelligence rules over humans. The protagonist and mainly the only character seen on screen, Joe (played by Lil Rel Howery), wakes up in a literal mill where he's told to do hard labor for hours straight, all because he was falling behind at his company, Mallard. In an interview with Cbr, O'Grady expands on the torment behind...

Writer/director/producer Anna Zlokovic helped kick off the spookiest month of the year with her new film Appendage, which recently released on Hulu. The film marks Zlokovic's feature length debut — an exciting milestone for the filmmaker. However, Appendage wasn't originally meant to be a full-length film. During the initial stages of production, Appendage was going to be part of the BIte Size Halloween lineup as a short film, but before she and her team could even complete production, it was greenlit as a feature.

Mental health is present in all facets of life — whether it's at the forefront of one's mind, a fleeting thought, or something else. More and more, conversations surrounding mental health and how to approach it without stigma have become more prevalent. In the recently released feature Appendage, mental health takes on a very literal and terrifying form. For writer/director/producer Anna Zlokovic, exploring mental health — more specifically, anxiety — through her film and the horror genre is key to her work.

Existing as a woman in today’s world is no easy task. At best, it’s anxiety-inducing and a real headache, and at worst, it can be downright deadly. Sometimes, it can be both — a fact that writer-director Anna Zlokovic is keenly aware of. Her new film, Appendage, deals with that fact directly, something she calls both “stressful and cathartic” as a filmmaker, turning the effects of poor mental health from a nebulous concept most people are afraid to discuss into a creature as terrifying as any zombie or vampire could ever be. Can’t pretend your problems don’t exist when they’re chasing you, right?...

In the body horror film Appendage, an anxiety-ridden Hannah begins to experience a burden that turns her life into a disastrous creep show. Her worries and fears manifest into a monstrous appendage that takes control of its own destiny. The transformative body part and the film's stylistic approach were inspired by many other films that rely on the human body to deliver its horror element, says director Anna Zlokovic.
Appendage is Zlokovic's feature-length directorial debut. She was named one of "IndieWire's 28 Rising Female Filmmakers to Watch in 2023." Appendage was originally a short film of hers before she adapted it into a feature-length for Hulu with a well-rounded cast and the time to expand on the aspects of Hannah's life that cause the appendage to grow into a horrendous creature. In an interview with Cbr, Zlokovic delved into the making of Appendage and its relatability to young audiences.

“You’re a pathetic freak,” groans the gruesome being chained to a post in the basement of an apartment building. The creepy thing — disfigured and looking like Gollum’s drinking buddy — is addressing Hannah, who has chained stashed the beast away. That doesn’t stop the creature from telling Hannah how awful she is, sentiments it possesses because it came from Hannah and has been feeding off her insecurities, growing stronger and more devious by the day.
These scenes and others even more creepy play out with freaky fun aplomb in Appendage, writer/director Anna Zlokovic’s feature film debut. Say what you will about this offbeat, darkly humorous horror thriller, but it’s certainly a wakeup call to pay attention to that gnawing critical voice inside of you, which can really get the better of you. In Appendage it does, and Hannah (Hadley Robinson of Little Women) is never the same.

Writer-director Anna Zlokovic doesn't waste any time establishing the horror premise of her film Appendage. Immediately in the first scene, it's clear that there's something very wrong with aspiring fashion designer Hannah (Hadley Robinson), and things only get worse from there. So many modern horror movies rely on slow builds and vague hints that it's refreshing for Appendage to reveal its grotesque monster early on. The problem is that Zlokovic runs through so much plot so quickly that Appendage nearly exhausts its premise before it really gets going. The one-note allegory about a monstrous manifestation of the protagonist's anxieties and fears wears thin before Appendage is halfway over.
Even if its message is a bit strained, Appendage is still quite entertaining, especially when Zlokovic leans into its campier elements. Appendage introduces Hannah during a tense family dinner with her wealthy parents in the suburbs, as her mother takes passive-aggressive digs...

While horror is always a popular genre among moviegoers, they have a special attachment to it in October since Halloween brings new vibes to these films. Given the genre's popularity, several movies have been released over the past few months, including Last Voyage of the Demeter, The Nun II, and A Haunting in Venice, but many more are set to be released in the coming months.
In particular, October is prominent for fans of horror because, on the one hand, many streaming services, such as Hulu and Disney+, will stream some notable horror classics as part of the Halloween festival, and, on the other, you can catch new films in theaters and other streaming services, like Peacock and Paramount+. So, without further ado, here is a list of every horror film releasing in October 2023.

"She's hiding something down there!" Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a new body horror film titled Appendage, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Anna Zlokovic. This first premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and it's debuting for streaming as part of the Huluween offerings this October. A young fashion designer's life spirals out of control as her darkest thoughts physically turn into something gruesome – that won't stop growing. After hitting a breaking point, Hannah's debilitating self-doubt inner thoughts manifest into a monstrous creature that threatens to upend her life. The film stars Hadley Robinson as Hannah, with Emily Hampshire, Deborah Rennard, Kausar Mohammed, Pat Dortch, and Annie Pisapia. Yeah this absolutely looks creepy, getting into some disgusting territory by the end. Reminds me of the horror films Malignant and Hatching in plenty of ways. Written and directed by Anna Zlokovic, Appendage is a grotesque body horror film with a powerful message. It doesn’t take long to get started, with the film quickly introducing Hannah (Hadley Robinson), an up-and-coming fashion designer with a plethora of self-confidence issues, and the problem that arises after she is triggered by stress. Appendage has fantastic creature design and a layered, creative story that remains engaging even as its third act becomes a bit tedious.
Hannah is trying to get her designs into her boss’ spring show, and she’s under a lot of pressure to deliver a statement dress that is unique and will draw positive attention. In addition to a stressful job, Hannah has also been seeing her boyfriend (Brandon Mychal Smith) for six months and things are getting really serious between them. With so much on her plate, Hannah starts having pain on the site of her birthmark,...

The “evil twin” school of psychological metaphor has been a frequent device in horror fiction, and its familiarity does not much benefit the very literal-minded “Appendage.” Writer-director Anna Zlokovic’s first feature centers on a young Manhattanite whose insecurities manifest themselves in the form of a mini-me who becomes a serious usurping threat. This SXSW-launched Hulu Original is sufficiently polished to pass muster as a night’s streaming entertainment for undiscriminating genre fans. But despite the grotesque premise, its attack is a little too blunt to make much impact, whether taken as thinly-veiled satire or straight fantasy thriller.
Introduced chafing under the critical control of her waspish mother (Deborah Rennard) during a visit home to the suburbs, Hannah (Hadley Robinson) is a nice, talented, attractive twentysomething nonetheless driven by the sense that she’s got everything to prove. An aspiring fashion designer, she certainly gets negative reinforcement on that front from her employer,...

After providing coverage on nearly every feature premiering at Sundance this year and sharing our top picks, today we take a deeper look at our favorite shorts from a number of contributors.
Appendage (Anna Zlokovic)
Shiva Baby breakout Rachel Sennott stars in this horror-comedy as a young fashion designer feeling the pressure from her boss (a delightfully fay Eric Roberts) to come up with a great idea before her just-starting career is in jeopardy. Alone at home with the blank page in front of her, self-doubt and anxiety appears as a growth in her side, chastising every thought and decision. Anyone, especially those in creative fields, can relate to that sensation of nagging insecurity and imposter syndrome, which Anna Zlokovic captures here in wonderfully grotesque fashion. And yet, as Appendage shows, oftentimes it’s exactly this pain that can push you to find your most enlightened inspirations. — Mitchell B.

Jane Rosenthal is mad as hell, but she’s got an idea for how to turn that anger into action. After weeks of allegations of sexual harassment and abuse against various bigwigs in the entertainment industry, many of them waged by actresses and female filmmakers, the producer has cooked up a plan to help change the industry and the world. No surprise, it asks for talented and rising women to help each other in a male-dominated business, all for the better.
Rosenthal, who co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival with Robert DeNiro and currently serves Chief Executive Officer of Tribeca Enterprises, today opened up this year’s kickoff lunch for the third annual Through Her Lens: Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program, with some pointed remarks.
