It’s much more than its plot synopsis, which tells of a 1990s period piece about an undercover police officer luring gay men into the crime of indecent exposure. In reality, “Plainclothes” is a meditation on the process of accepting oneself even as society and loved ones deem it wrong.

English actor Tom Blyth, most recognizable from the MGM+ series “Billy the Kid” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” impresses as Lucas, the cop. Blythe’s performance is an interior one, where what Lucas does is not as important as how he feels inside. Capturing that is a special gift and Blyth delivers. Early on, it’s obvious that Lucas compartmentalizes his own desires with ease while performing his job.

With gay rights coming back into the crosshairs in almost every country across the globe, Carmen Emmi’s slow-burn drama is sobering reminder of just how far these things have progressed in the past 30 years. Taking place primarily in 1997 — unfolding in flashback from the framing device of a family New Year’s Eve party being held a few years later — it takes a little while to find its feet. Once the main players are established, though, and experimental flashes of harsh analog video become a more recognizable manifestation of its ugly-beautiful aesthetic, Plainclothes builds to a very satisfying conclusion, putting a torrid but meaningful gay love affair at the center of a universal coming-of-age story.

These days, gay men can arrange sex by a smartphone app as easily as ordering a pizza. But back in the ’90s, when “Plainclothes” takes place, such trysts not only had to be coordinated in person, but could be punished by arrest. Audiences of a certain age and demographic almost certainly remember the risk and fear (not to mention the illicit excitement) of the hunt, back when undercover police monitored public “tearooms” for lewd behavior. In writer-director Carmen Emmi’s “we’ve come a long way, baby” debut, the cops take it one step further, luring frisky men into exposing themselves.

But what if the officer in question was closeted and one of these strangers slipped him his phone number? That’s the intriguing — if credulity-stretching — premise of “Plainclothes,” which casts Tom Blyth (the outlaw star of Epix’s “Billy the Kid”) as Lucas, a second-generation cop with all kinds of identity issues.

Like “Cruising” for the 1990s New Queer Cinema set, Carmen Emmi’s feature debut “Plainclothes” features the most emotionally (and physically) naked performance yet from rising British star Tom Blyth. He plays Lucas, a rookie cop somewhere outside Syracuse assigned to post up in one of those bland, sad Malls of America, hoping to lure men into a toilet stall — and into exposing themselves or more.

This clandestine, bait-and-catch operation was the sort of problematic police procedure that got people like George Michael into trouble for lewd conduct. Here, it forms the basis of a thriller — and one with shades of romance when Lucas’ own secret attraction to men starts overtaking him. And especially in the form of Russell Tovey, sparking a hesitant hook-up and possible romance after Lucas catches Andrew (Tovey) in the bathroom, only to end up lingering too long.

The most Tony-nominated play of all time will wrap its stint at New York’s John Golden Theatre on Sunday, after two extensions, a recoup, and 305 performances in the can. They’ll head to London’s Duke of York’s Theatre in May, though no exact date has been announced.

In the fall, the production will venture to the Pacific Northwest, where it will launch in Seattle at the Paramount Theatre. Additional U.

Exclusive: Stereophonic, David Adjmi’s acclaimed Tony Award-winning play about a Fleetwood Mac-like ’70s rock band, has recouped its Broadway investment and will begin a West End engagement and national U.S. tour later this year, producers said today.

The twice-extended Broadway production is currently playing its final week at the Golden Theatre, where it will end its run Sunday, January 12, after 305 performances. The play made Tony history last spring by becoming Broadway’s most nominated play ever, going on to win five of its 13 nominations: Best Play, Best Director ( Daniel Aukin), Best Featured Actor (Will Brill), Best Scenic Design (David Zinn) and Best Sound Design (Ryan Rumery).

Sundance received 15,775 submissions from 156 countries, including 4,138 feature-length film submissions. Stereophonic, which follows a folk-rock quintet on the brink of blowing up, will extend its Broadway run, producers announced Monday. The production will extend its run through Jan. 12, 2025, which producers called Stereophonic’s final extension.

Cast members Sarah Pidgeon, Juliana Canfield, and Tom Pecinka, who have performed in the musical since the show opened in April, will deliver their final performances on Sept. 29. Amy Forsyth, Rebecca Naomi Jones, and Benjamin Anthony Anderson will take over their respective roles as Diana, Holly, and Peter. The new cast will begin performances Oct.

Stereophonic, David Adjmi’s Tony-winning play, will extend its run through January 12, 2025, a move that producers say is the production’s final extension.

Exclusive: Canada’s International South Asian Film Festival (iSAFF) has unveiled its lineup. The festival will take place in Surrey, British Columbia and run from September 25 to 29.

Featuring 19 world premieres, eight North American premieres, and 23 Canadian premieres, the festival will open with Lakshmipriya Devi’s debut feature Boong. Boong will have its world premiere at TIFF on September 7.

The iSAFF’s closing film will be Amar Wala’s debut feature Shook, which stars Saamer Usmani and Amy Forsyth (Coda). The Canadian production is financed by Telefilm Canada and Ontario Creates.

Under this year’s festival theme of “Crossroads,” the lineup also includes Usman Riaz’s The Glassworker, the festival’s first animated feature from Pakistan and dark comedy We Strangers, directed by Anu Valia.

Besides feature films, the festival will showcase 53 short films and five episodic series from South Asia and its diaspora.

The American historical period show, created by Julian Fellowes (“Downton Abbey”), debuted in February 2022 with its first season, which introduced a sprawling ensemble cast. 11 episodes later, a complex web of stories, from the upper-class old New York society, new money arrivals and their staff and servers was woven together. Several loose ends left the first season on an open note.

Succession actor Saamer Usmani and Coda actress Amy Forsyth have nabbed lead roles in Amar Wala’s debut scripted feature Shook, which is shooting in Toronto.

The indie from Film Forge (Infinity Pool, Sleeping Giant) and producer Karen Harnisch and Wala’s banner, Scarborough Pictures, centers on a South Asian family in Toronto and the suburb of Scarborough. Wala is directing Shook based on a script he co-wrote with novelist Adnan Khan.

Usmani, who also had a role in Inventing Anna and The Three Body Problem, will play the role of Ashish who, while living in downtown Toronto, meets Claire, played by Forsyth, who is about to move to Montreal at the end of the summer.

The streaming service canceled the Jason Katims drama on Wednesday after one season.

The news is a bit of a surprise because Apple TV+ has canceled few shows after their first seasons.

But Dear Edward didn't break out in the way the service expected.

Dear Edward launched with the first three episodes of its 10-episode first season on Friday, February 3, 2023, followed by one new episode weekly every Friday through March 24, 2023.

The series was adapted from Napolitano's bestselling, acclaimed novel of the same name, Dear Edward is a heartbreaking, life-affirming, and uplifting story about survival, resilience, connection, and the examination of what makes us human.

Dear Edward tells the story of Edward Adler (played by O'Brien), a 12-year-old boy who survives a devastating commercial plane crash that kills every other passenger on the flight, including his family.

“Dear Edward” is now dearly departed. The Apple TV+ drama will not move forward with a second season, Variety has confirmed.

Executive producer Jason Katims is now set up at Imagine TV, but “Dear Edward” came from his deal with Apple Studios, which produced the show. Written, showrun and executive produced by Katims, the 10-episode “Dear Edward” was adapted from author Ann Napolitano’s novel about a 12-year-old boy who is the only survivor of a commercial plane crash.

Newcomer Colin O’Brien played Edward, while “Dear Edward” was also notable for its reunion between Katims and his “Friday Night Lights” star Connie Britton, who played a woman whose husband was killed on the plane. The iPhone maker/streamer has canceled its Jason Katims-produced drama Dear Edward, making the series about the lone survivor of a plane crash one of Apple’s few scripted shows to get the ax after a single season.

Based on the book by Ann Napolitano, the series reunited Friday Night Lights creator Katims with leading lady Connie Britton and revolved around Edward (Colin O’Brien), a young boy who was the lone survivor of a plane crash. Taylor Schilling, Amy Forsyth, Carter Hudson, Anna Uzele, Idris DeBrand, Ivan Saw, Dario Ladani Sanchez, Eva Ariel Binder and Brittany S. Hall rounded out the cast. (Britton only had a one-year deal for the show, though Katims expressed hope of continuing her story should a second season have come.)

What started out as a joke may become a reality for the support group in Dear Edward, as seen in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the March 3 episode. In the “Folklore” clip, Sam (Dario Ladani Sanchez) shares, “I cleared out Ben’s storage unit. I took all his stuff to Goodwill and I couldn’t leave a single thing there… They say that a lot of those donations just end up getting thrown away, so I just couldn’t.” He admits, “It just felt wrong.” Lacey (Taylor Schilling) gets it, since her garage is still full with her sister’s belongings. “What if we had a garage sale?” Linda (Amy Forsyth) suggests. Dee Dee (Connie Britton) is “opposed to garage sales on principle,” and Sam isn’t completely on board either, explaining, “The last thing that I want to do is make money off of his death.” But Lacey has an idea.

One major change that Jason Katims made in adapting “Dear Edward” from Ann Napolitano’s novel involved casting Connie Britton in a brand new role that really centers the show, but does not exist in the book.

Britton, who has previously collaborated with Katims for “Friday Night Lights,” portrays the charismatic and wealthy Dee Dee, who loses her husband and the family breadwinner in the crash, in the AppleTV+ show.

“I did not read the book and Dee Dee is not in the book.” Britton told TheWrap. “She comes from very humble beginnings, but then she creates this life with all her beautiful things and there’s something that is very sort of free. She has this kind of freedom to be very open-hearted and loving in a way because she has so much privilege, and so it’s sort of hard to know which came first.”

Jason Katims’ adaptation of Ann Napolitano’s Dear Edward isn’t a wink-and-nudge kind of show, but in a late-season episode, a pair of characters are doing what amounts to a debriefing on the drama’s myriad plotlines and one of them realizes that two of the ongoing stories have been very, very similar.

“Oh, well that … echoes,” says the character who spent the season less involved in the various main arcs.

Emmy-winning writer-producer Jason Katims said casting Connie Britton in his latest project for Apple TV+ came to him on “instinct,” with “Dear Edward” marking a reunion between him and the star of “Friday Night Lights,” on which he wrote and executive produced.

“I always wanted to work together again,” Katims, who developed “Dear Edward” for television, said at the 2023 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour for Apple TV+. “But I wanted to wait until I felt like I had a role to bring to her that was going to be something that I just had this instinct that she would connect with this woman.”

During its presentation at the Television Critics Association’s winter 2023 press tour, Apple TV+ revealed a trailer for comedy series “Shrinking” starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, which premieres on Jan. 27.

The series follows Jimmy (Segel), a grieving therapist who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives, including his own. Ford plays Jimmy’s boss, who runs the therapy practice. Also starring are Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Lukita Maxwell.

Segel, Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein co-created “Shrinking,” which is produced by Warner Bros. Television, where Lawrence is under an overall deal, and Lawrence’s Doozer Productions.
