Let's face it: We all need a good laugh — now more than ever.
“Laughing is one of the most fundamental, foundational human joys, if not the fundamental foundational joy,” says Eric Ledgin, showrunner and co-creator of St. Denis Medical, NBC's hit medical mockumentary. “So whatever the subject matter is, if you're a comedy and you're not at least trying to make people laugh, I don't think you're doing it right. And I think that audiences are really feeling the craving for that.”
Ledgin recently took the stage at SXSW's Film & TV Festival alongside Universal Television's EVP of comedy development Jim Donnelly to chart the series' comedic creative journey in a panel titled "Pitch to Screen," moderated by Gold Derby's editor-in-chief.
Making people laugh, though, has become harder than ever. “Audiences are very savvy right now,” says Donnelly. “You’re not just competing with everything else that’s currently being produced,...

“Jury Duty” will be back for Season 2 sooner than we think.
The Amazon Freevee comedy, which became a surprise hit for the platform and migrated over to Prime Video after the sibling streamer’s shuttering, already produced its next installment, according to media reports.
Amazon representatives declined to comment for the story.
The new season is believed to be set at a corporate retreat instead of a courtroom, according to a report from Variety. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Deadline reported the story will center around a David vs. Goliath theme.
“Jury Duty” was created by Lee Eisenberg, and Gene Stupnitsky. Season 1 followed breakout star Ronald Gladden in a documentary-style journey following his time as a juror, until it is revealed that the proceedings were fake from the start.

“Jury Duty” has been summoned once again.
The comedy series, which debuted on Amazon’s now-defunct streamer Freevee as a surprise hit in 2023, will run for a second season on Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned from sources. Amazon did not comment on the renewal.
Additionally, a source tells Variety that Season 2 will be set at a corporate retreat rather than a courtroom, and that it was shot in the Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills. Amazon did not comment on this information.
Season 1 of the documentary-style project followed Ronald Gladden’s journey as a juror during a trial that gets increasingly more dysfunctional until it’s finally revealed that the entire case is fake and everyone besides him is a paid actor.

One of the comedy breakouts of 2023 was Jury Duty, a documentary-style comedy for Amazon Freevee that featured James Marsden and other actors surrounding an unsuspecting juror at a trial. St. Denis Medical Season 1, Episode 11, "Nobody Even Mentions the Brownies," is a classic TV sitcom hour. It takes one white lie and blows it up into an entire production, capturing all the zaniness therein. But the catalyst for all that, interestingly enough, is one of the biggest pet peeves when it comes to health care: the cost. The episode takes something everybody hates and proves exactly why everyone hates it, by using the comedy trick of exaggeration.
"Nobody Even Mentions the Brownies" starts with Joyce telling the staff that they need to make more money -- just like every other TV hospital.

The “Star Trek” star plays Dr. Oliver Wolf, an eccentric and gifted neurologist with facial blindness whose condition gives him a unique perspective on care. Alongside his brilliant team of interns at Bronx General and through unconventional methods, he takes on some of the world’s most puzzling psychological and neurological cases.
It’s still uncertain if there will be a second season of “Brilliant Minds,” but the first season of the series has been a hit for the network.

St. Denis Medical broke through in a big way when it debuted on NBC in the fall, and the network issued some exciting news on Tuesday morning:
St. Denis Medical Season 2 is a go.
The mockumentary is NBC’s first scripted renewal for the 2025-26 TV season. Make of that what you will.
(NBC)
The freshman drama averages just under 4 million viewers and has a 0.5 rating in the demo, proving that the broadcast networks still have some life left.
NBC teases that the series has reached 21.4 million viewers to date, which is astounding, but it doesn’t hold much water when the network doesn’t break it down.
The Live + 7 numbers are enough to keep it on the air for several years.

St. Denis Medical has certainly seen a lot six episodes into its freshman run on NBC, but the next one could be the most chaotic yet. Ahead of the episode's airing, Cbr can unveil an exclusive sneak peek at the cold open, teasing the madness that happens when inmates arrive for treatment from a nearby prison.

In the sneak peek clip, Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey), Ron (David Alan Grier), and Alex (Allison Toman) attempt to take control with treating two prisoners who've been rushed in after an apparently violent incident took place at the prison. Of course, as also teased in the cold open, the inmates use much more "colorful" language than the patients that the medical staff are typically tending to. Check out the clip below.

NBC and Peacock's new sitcom St. Denis Medical is a mockumentary workplace comedy set in an underfunded Oregon hospital and is sure to cure your woes, at least according to critics. It avoids the tropes of other medical shows that tend to focus on flashy doctors and major crises, instead primarily focusing on nurses — the unsung heroes that keep the hospital running.
A perfectly cast Allison Tolman (Fargo) stars as a workaholic supervising nurse and mom who keeps the ER running; Wendi McLendon-Covey (a familiar face to fans of The Goldbergs and Reno 911!) plays the administrative bigwig who's focused more on accolades than patient care; and David Alan Grier takes on the role of a curmudgeonly doctor. Kahyun Kim, Josh Lawson, Kaliko Kauahi, and Mekki Leeper fill out the rest of the archetypes, including a nurse with a wild streak, a self-idolizing surgeon, and a Montana transplant with a strict...

Warning: this article contains Spoilers for St. Denis Medical.St. Denis Medical has proven its comedy chops, but NBC’s mockumentary has a romantic storyline that should be scrapped. St. Denis Medical’s wonderful cast of characters includes Mekki Leeper’s rookie Matt and Kahyun Kim’s experienced Serena among many other talented names. Matt’s character is the most overtly comedic due to his incompetence and sheltered upbringing, while Serena is a skilled nurse who knows how to diffuse any situation. The two characters come together at the closing of episode 1 (“Welcome to St. Denis”), when Serena offers Matt encouragement that awakens a puppy love in the new nurse (but nothing beyond that).
St. Denis Medical’s Superstore reunion has garnered buzz since its premiere, but there are an abundance of differences between the two shows, including the romantic potential for a slow burn. As it stands, Serena and Matt are barely coworkers,...

Abbott Elementary revived the mockumentary sitcom genre in 2021, resulting in St. Denis Medical in 2024, and allowing the newer show to emulate one of the older series' storylines (but with its own twist). The NBC medical comedy, co-created by Justin Spitzer of Superstore fame and Eric Ledgin, follows the doctors and nurses at St. Denis Medical Center in Oregon. Similar to other mockumentary sitcoms, the St. Denis Medical characters are eccentric, unique, and hilarious, forming a group with great chemistry. NBC's medical sitcom follows "an eclectic team of underfunded yet dedicated doctors, nurses and hospital staff, who want nothing more than to turn the hospital into an international medical destination." Among the bunch is Bruce, a talented trauma surgeon whose lack of awareness often makes him appear harsh. Josh Lawson (Superstore), who plays the character, admits that his attitude does put him at risk of being too mean. It was important to the actor to make it known that Bruce never intends to hurt others, as his actions come from a place of ignorance rather than cruelty.

St. Denis Medical goes beyond the patient neglecting to thank Matt, however. After Val’s (Kaliko Kauahi) advice to forget about it goes ignored, Matt has a chance encounter with the patient after he’s discharged, picking up his sweatshirt...

St. Denis Medical airs Tuesdays on NBC and follows "an eclectic team of underfunded yet dedicated doctors, nurses and hospital staff, who want nothing more than to turn the hospital into an international medical destination." However, among the enthusiastic bunch are also characters like David Alan Grier's Dr. Ron, a seasoned surgeon who's seen it all and is over it all. In addition to Grier, the main cast includes Allison Tolman, Kaliko Kauahi, Josh Lawson, Mekki Leeper, Kahyun Kim, and Wendi McLendon-Covey.
Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer co-created the sitcom after working together on series such as Superstore and America Auto. St. Denis Medical serves as Ledgin's showrunning debut, and he was inspired to draw from some of his own experiences. The co-creator chose the hospital setting due to the wide range of scenarios it allows for, sharing that, while emergency rooms are scary places, they are also home...

St. Denis Medical has been a breakout hit for NBC, but its overlap with beloved sitcom Superstore could prematurely stunt its growth. Both series were created by Justin Spitzer (with Eric Ledgin co-creating NBC’s modern sitcom). But while St. Denis Medical’s cast of characters is talented, some names are familiar to the point of being a double-edged sword. Having multiple actors recognizable for a single role in a different show is risky for the medical workplace mockumentary that’s still trying to set itself apart from contemporaries.
On a basic level, the small connection makes NBC’s newest comedy an appealing show for Superstore fans, but it almost guarantees that St. Denis Medical will never be more than a Superstore replacement. In that sense, the medical comedy will always live in its predecessor’s shadow. Since there’s yet to be a confirmed order for St. Denis Medical...

Early this year, it was announced that Zac Efron (The Iron Claw) had signed on to star in the A24 thriller Famous for director Jody Hill, and it was revealed that he’ll be playing dual roles in the film, which is based on a novel by Blake Crouch. Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) has since joined the cast, along with Nicholas Braun (Succession), Stephanie Koenig (Lessons in Chemistry), Debby Ryan (Insatiable), Mekki Leeper (Jury Duty), and Cory Michael Smith (Saturday Night) – and now that the project is in production, it has been revealed that Bill Pullman (Independence Day) and Daniel Zovatto (Woman of the Hour) are also in the cast!
Scripted by Chad Hodge, who created the short-lived, Crouch-inspired TV series Wayward Pines back in 2015, Famous has the following synopsis: Lance Dunkquist has one asset that’s about to change his life – he has the face of a movie star. And...

For nine seasons and 182 episodes, Scrubs, combined both drama and comedy, chronicling the lives of the doctors and nurses at Sacred Heart Hospital. Now, per Variety, Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence is developing a reboot of the fan-favorite show which ran from 2001 to 2010.
Lawrence is reportedly creating a new version of the series for ABC via 20th Television. The original Scrubs was produced by ABC Studios, which recently became a part of 20th Television as part of the restructuring by its parent company, Disney. While Lawrence is under contract with Warner Bros. Television, the studio is set to give room for Lawrence to work with his former partners on Scrubs.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Lawrence is not going to serve as the showrunner on the new project if it gets greenlit to series. As of now, no other deals have been worked out nor have any actors been cast for the reboot.

Spoiler alert: The following article contains mild spoilers from St. Denis Medical season 1, episode 5, "A Peanut and Caramel-Filled Miracle."
Although St. Denis Medical is off to a great start, one can't help but notice one thing missing from its plot, and it's a detail that Superstore used to its full advantage. NBC's 2024 mockumentary sitcom follows the lives of an eccentric group of doctors and nurses working at St. Denis Medical Center. Given its talented cast and reliable premise, it's no wonder why St. Denis Medical has been a hit with critics and audiences alike. However, after only five episodes, the new show has failed to establish one important storyline that made Superstore as beloved as it was.
New episodes of St. Denis Medical air on Tuesdays at 8 pm Et on NBC, while all six seasons of Superstore are available to stream on Hulu and Peacock.
Superstore ran for six seasons and 113 episodes,...

Superstore, which has been off the air for more than three years, is sorely missed, but the good news is that NBC released the show's best replacement series in the fall of 2024. The original sitcom premiered in November 2015 and was beloved by many, as proven by its impressive run on NBC and 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Superstore ultimately produced six seasons and 113 episodes before it came to an end in March 2021. While it would be difficult for any TV show to follow in Superstore's footsteps, one 2024 workplace comedy has the chops to do so.
A few months before the Superstore series finale, a spinoff, Bo & Cheyenne, was said to be in the early stages of development at NBC. As the title suggests, it would have featured Johnny Pemberton and Nichole Sakura reprising their Superstore roles as Bo and Cheyenne, respectively. However, NBC later decided not to go forward with the spinoff.

Two years since the Season 2 finale, The Sex Lives of College Girls is finally back for Season 3. Everything appears normal at first as the four main characters find themselves reunited and start their sophomore year of college. Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) have made amends after not speaking to each other for a whole summer after Kimberly was caught lying to Whitney about kissing her ex. Bela (Amrit Kaur) has found herself looking for a new purpose and takes on the role of residence director for the freshman dorm after finding out she doesn't have the credits to transfer. Finally, there is Leighton (Reneé Rapp), who has found herself continuing with her relationship with Alicia (Midori Francis).
However, fans should expect a change, as in 2023, it was confirmed that Rapp would be leaving The Sex Lives of College Girls in Season 3. While fans have had over a...

In the third act of “St. Denis Medical’s” fourth episode, “Salamat You Too,” a group of nurses are on break when the head nurse, Alex (Allison Tolman), interrupts to gently reprimand their previous insubordination. Earlier, the self-identified “Filipino Mafia” didn’t like when Alex split up their “clique,” so they simply ignored her orders and stuck together. Then, in an effort to reestablish her authority, Alex walks to the dry-erase board and tries to remind her colleagues that she’s the boss — a simple declaration that nevertheless requires a six-part written breakdown (including one particularly abstract acronym).
Alex is the focal point of the scene. She’s leading the meeting — issuing directives, speaking emphatically, gesticulating wildly — and Tolman’s ability to channel relatable frustrations through passive aggressive instructions is pretty funny. But even with her talent on full display, the funniest bits take place in the background. One even starts before the scene itself,...
