Unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye to a few movies leaving Netflix in August 2024, including The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld.
At the end of every month, there are usually a handful of movies that leave Netflix and head to a different streaming service or cable network. In August, there are more than a few movies that I think people will be especially bummed are leaving Netflix.
We shared a list of six good movies leaving Netflix in August, including an action movie from a man who is probably really going through it right now, Ben Affleck.

Healing seldom happens overnight. Wounds may run deep for years before they are patched up for the world to see and can continue to fester beneath the surface even once the facade has been restored. No one should ever have to grow up in an environment where family becomes the cause of such wounds and yet so many do: these cuts are the deepest, and there can never be enough sutures to piece back what once was; these are holes that follow so many into adult life, impacting the choices made and the paths followed. In Tom Huang’s stumbling dramedy “Dealing With Dad”, these wounds impact a flawed family’s reunion to handle their dad – the root cause of their collective trauma – and help him overcome a bout of depression; the longer the film drags on the more obvious it is they are as burdened by his affliction as...

"I think we can call today's experiment a success!" Hulu has revealed an official trailer for Sex Appeal, a romantic comedy movie made for the streaming service. It's opening this January, which is not the best time to drop this but it also might find its audience streaming online anyway. Avery is a teenager with a tendency towards perfectionism who enlists her friend Larson to help her prepare for her first time with her long-distance boyfriend. In this hilarious teen comedy, Avery’s study results in the realization that there’s more to sex, and love, than mechanics. Relationships require both head and heart. Starring Mika Abdalla, Jake Short, Mason Versaw, Paris Jackson, Margaret Cho, Fortune Feimster, Rebecca Henderson, Tate Hanyok, Hayden Szeto, and Artemis Pebdani. This looks like some good fun discussing sex and opening up the conversation in a smart and confident way. Campy but it all kinda works?...

"I've heard you're interested in going to America. Is that true?" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a film called Tigertail, an impressive passion project marking the feature directorial debut of Taiwanese-American writer / producer / filmmaker Alan Yang. The multi-generational drama is about a Taiwanese factory worker who leaves behind his homeland to seek opportunity in America, where he struggles to find connection while balancing family and newfound responsibilities. "Spanning continents and decades, from 1950s Taiwan to present-day New York City," Tigertail is written and directed by Emmy winner Alan Yang (for comedy writing on Aziz Ansari's "Master of None"). The film stars Hong-Chi Lee, Tzi Ma, Christine Ko, Hayden Szeto, Yo-Hsing Fang, Kunjue Li, Fiona Fu, James Saito, along with Joan Chen. No surprise, this looks absolutely incredible - in every possible way. This is awards-worthy quality filmmaking. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Alan Yang's Tigertail,...

While the distribution strategies for the majority of film companies were uprooted when it comes to their work in the wake of the coronavirus, one distributor that moved ahead as scheduled was, of course, Netflix. Their next high-profile release is Tigertail, the directorial debut of Alan Yang, who is known for his work on Parks and Recreation and Master of None.
Starring Tzi Ma, Christine Ko, Hayden Szeto, Hong-Chi Lee, Yo-Hsing Fang, Kunjue Li, Fiona Fu, James Saito, and Joan Chen, the film tells a multi-generational story of a Taiwanese factory worker who embarks on a new life in America. The first trailer previews and emotionally poignant work that may make a good double feature with another drama about cultural identity and assimilation, this year’s Sundance winner Minari.
Ahead of a release in just a few weeks on April 10, see the trailer and poster.

Too often, we define marginalized groups as targets of oppression or as social justice fighters, but rarely as just regular people who wake up every day, pee, go to work and have sex like the rest of the world. Director Richard Wong attempts to offer this more humanized narrative that centers on disabled characters in his surprisingly tender new comedy, “Come As You Are.”
But in doing so, he provokes a similarly important thought: Why are all the leads played by able-bodied actors?
Inspired by Asta Philpot’s real-life journey, “Come As You Are” is an intriguing rom-com slash coming-of-age tale along the lines of “American Pie,” except told through the perspective of three disabled young men with dreams of escaping their fiercely guarded lives and getting laid. The abrasive Scotty, who uses a wheelchair, lives with his mother and caregiver, Liz (Janeane Garofalo), who is tethered to him so...

From romcoms to Marvel blockbusters, east Asian actors are enjoying unprecedented success. What’s taken the film industry so long?
It was the moment that all romance fans look forward to at the end of a film, hearts bubbling with anticipation: the kiss. I was watching The Edge of Seventeen, a smart coming-of-age movie, in which Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) had rushed to see her awkwardly endearing classmate (Hayden Szeto). After a bungled date and a crush on another man, she had decided Erwin was the one she wanted.
And then, instead of any show of passion, there came … an affectionate pat on the back as he introduced her to his friends. Moments before, I had been delighted that a Canadian actor of Chinese descent had been cast as the love interest of a white American woman. As the credits rolled, I felt cheated.

Everyone remembers hanging out during the summer. No matter what part of your youth it was during, being with your friends, feeling out the first pangs of love and sex with significant others, the whole shebang is steeped in positive nostalgia. Actor turned director Joseph Cross taps into that for his directorial debut Summer Night, a hangout movie from the word go. Cross crafts a film that feels lived in, as if these characters were already your friends. Balancing a number of plot lines with relative ease, he gives all the indications that he’s got a bright future behind the camera. The movie is a coming of age tale, taking place over, you guessed it, one summer night. A whole bunch of young folks are dealing with various romantic entanglements, while most are getting ready to attend a concert at the Alamo that evening. Jameson (Ellar Coltrane) and Seth...

A charming remake of the Belgian comedy Hasta La Vista, inspired by actual events, Richard Wong’s Come As You Are is the story of three men with various disabilities who set out on an international road trip highlighting the very real need to be touched. Of course, for 24-year-old Scotty (Grant Rosenmeyer) a quadriplegic amateur rapper, he wants a little more than to be touched by his loving mother Liz (Janeane Garofalo). Crudely, there is one part of his body that still works.
Matt (Hayden Szeto) is a new client, a boxer whose body has just started to fail him. He’s recently confined to a wheelchair and having trouble adjusting to the new demands. Scotty, by comparison, has been wheelchair-bound with limited mobility since birth. The third member of the trio, Mo (Ravi Patel), is a blind 35-year-old who works at a clinic where he meets Scotty and Matt.

The rare remake that’s actually a slight improvement on its predecessor, Richard Wong’s “Come as You Are” translates Geoffrey Enthoven’s 2011 Belgian “Hasta la Vista” to middle America. Other changes are less substantial, but this seriocomedy has a less formulaic feel than the original while remaining a crowd-pleasing buddy pic-caper with a soft-pedaled minority empowerment theme. Reception in real-world disabled communities may be somewhat muted by the casting of able-bodied actors in the lead roles. Nonetheless, it’s hard to entirely resist this loosely fact-inspired tale of three physically challenged men road-tripping to Montreal in order to lose their virginity at a “special needs” bordello.
Sticking close in outline to the earlier screenplay by Mariano VanHoof and Pierre de Clercq, Erik Linthorst’s script centers on a trio of protagonists all stuck living with their parents in adulthood. Paraplegic Scotty, whose congenital defect makes him particularly dependent on...

Exclusive: Three disabled men, one no-nonsense nurse and a trip to a brothel that caters to people with special needs. That pretty much sums up the SXSW film Come As You Are directed by Richard Wong and written by Erik Linthorst.
Based on the 2011 Belgian film Hasta La Vista, the dramedy stars Grant Rosenmeyer, Hayden Szeto, and Ravi Patel as the aforementioned trio who escape their overbearing parents so that they can go to a Montreal brothel to lose their virginity and embrace their independence. Sidibe stars as a nurse who drives the three to said brothel and as seen from the brazenly funny clip above, she doesn’t take anyone’s lip — and don’t call her sweetheart.
The film also stars Janeane Garofalo and C.S. Lee. Executive producers are Franklin Leonard, Ted Reilly and Kelly Waller with Rosenmeyer, Barrett Stuart, and Jacqueline “Jj” Ingram serving as producers.

The capital city of Texas prides itself with their motto “Keep Austin Weird” and it spills over into their well-known events — especially South by Southwest (SXSW). Since its debut in 1987, the festival has become a holy trinity of music, interactive and film — and it has grown into a premiere festival and conference which attracts people from all over the globe. In particular, the film festival has remained consistent with its brand, featuring numerous films that range from unorthodox art house pics to bold comedies to risk-taking drama to the unapologetically bizarre genre features. At the same, all the films seem to connect in a “weird” way that makes a statement and resonates with audiences. If Sundance and Tiff had a rebellious sibling who liked to shake things up an make things fun when it came to film festivals, SXSW would be exactly that. From March 8-17, SXSW will continue the...

The latest low budget horror flick from Blumhouse Productions is about a demonically possessed game of Truth Or Dare that kills off its players. If you can get past that admittedly ridiculous premise, there are just enough creepy chills and thrills to make this worth your while, even if it never quite manages the supernatural horror of something like It Follows (an obvious influence).
Directed by Jeff Wadlow, the film centres on socially conscious college student Olivia (singer-slash-actress Lucy Hale), who’s coerced into accompanying her friends on a spring break trip to Mexico. After a drunken night at a bar, Olivia falls in with Carter (Landon Liboiron), who suggests that she and her friends follow him to...

August has been a heartening month for Asian representation on screen, ranging from “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Searching” at the movies to the American arrival of the Canadian series “Kim’s Convenience” on Netflix. The streaming service has also released “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” a teen rom-com featuring an Asian-American female protagonist and her family. Despite this, some are not thrilled that of the many featured love interests in the story, none are Asian.
IndieWire spoke to author Jenny Han, whose novel is the basis for the movie, about the criticism of excluding Asians boys from the narrative.
“I understand the frustration and I share that frustration of wanting to see more Asian-American men in media,” she said. “For this, all I can say is this is the story that I wrote.”

As Universal/Blumhouse’s Truth Or Dare crosses $50M at the international box office, and $90M worldwide, producer Jason Blum says he looks forward to working with director Jeff Wadlow “forever.” This is the Kick-Ass 2 helmer’s highest-grossing film to date domestically ($40.7M), internationally ($50.1M) and globally ($90.8M).
Blum tells me, “Even though we have done it before, I can attest that getting a $5M movie to 90 million bucks worldwide is no easy feat. Truth Or Dare has surpassed the worldwide gross of the first installment of our Purge franchise and our first and second Sinister movies as well. And Jeff Wadlow deserves all the credit. I am looking forward to working with him forever.”

In more confident hands, Truth or Dare might have been something worthwhile. The concept of a viral Truth or Dare game where the main rule is “if I’m lying, I’m dying,” could open all kinds of possibilities in all kinds of genres–imagine what a young Atom Egoyan might have done at the helm. Jeff Wadlow, director of decent genre fare Cry Wolf and Never Back Down, chooses instead to largely revisit the ideas of his debut feature with a group of good-looking college students cursed into playing a deadly game. The only problem is they’re not a terribly interesting group to spend 100 minutes with.
Opening with an evocatively promising premise before dashing off into boring absurdity, a youngster enters a convenience store in Mexico and burns the place down; thus, a curse begins. We then meet our main group who will face various threats: Lucy Hale stars as Olivia Barron,...

Dwayne Johnson’s action-fantasy “Rampage” is heading for downbeat North American opening weekend of about $27 million to $32 million at 3,950 locations, early estimates showed Friday.
That’s well below forecasts and signals that Paramount’s second weekend of John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” should repeat as the box office winner with about $34 million at 3,508 sites. Universal-Blumhouse’s debut of “Truth or Dare” will come in above expectations in third with about $18 million at 3,029 venues.
With a price tag in the $120 million range, “Rampage” needs to deliver strong box office around the world to become profitable. The New Line-Warner Bros. release had been forecasted to debut between $37 million and $40 million from 3,950 theaters this weekend.
Johnson portrays a primatologist who shares a bond with a silverback gorilla who becomes a giant beast after a rogue genetic experiment goes wrong and creates an array of rampaging creatures. First-day grosses in China were impressive with $15.7 million,...

Dwayne Johnson’s “Rampage” has opened with a solid $2.4 million in Thursday night preview screenings in North America.
Universal-Blumhoue’s “Truth or Dare” grossed $750,000 in Thursday night shows at 2,400 locations.
“Rampage,” from New Line and Warner Bros., showed its strongest performance among younger customers. “Rampage,” loosely based on the 1986 Midway arcade game, has been forecasted to debut between $37 million and $40 million from 3,950 theaters this weekend. The movie is expected to take the top spot from the second weekend of “A Quiet Place,” which has taken in $63 million in its first six days.
Johnson portrays a primatologist who shares a bond with a silverback gorilla who becomes a giant beast after a rogue genetic experiment goes wrong and creates an array of rampaging creatures. Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Joe Manganiello also star in the film, directed by Brad Peyton. The sci-fi adventure carries a reported $120 million price tag.

Ah, it’s another special Friday, a day to avoid black cats while walking around a ladder in order to see a new horror flick at the multiplex. On this thirteenth, we’re not getting another incarnation of Jason Vorhees, or Freddie, Leatherface, or Michael Myers. Nope this flick is in a part of “Scare City” that’s a bit more genteel than where those dudes do their mayhem. That’s because (speaking of the thirteenth) this movie’s rated “PG-13”, an area that’s more in the wheelhouse of the company known as Blumhouse. Just in case you were thinking they’ve gone all “respectable’ with their Oscar win (Best Original Screenplay) for last year’s smash Get Out, here’s another movie for teens who love to see slightly older, very photographic young adults in jeopardy. And just so you don’t confuse it with that ancient 1990’s Madonna documentary,...

Box office king Dwayne Johnson is ready to reclaim his crown.
Johnson, whose “Jumanji” just became Sony Picture’s highest grossing movie of all time, is swinging back into theaters with “Rampage.” The New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. pic, which reportedly cost $120 million to make, is estimating a debut between $37 million to $40 million from 3,950 theaters. Though that would be enough to secure the top spot from “A Quiet Place,” it’ll still need a boost from overseas to make the pricey film profitable.
Loosely based on the video game, “Rampage” follows a primatologist (Johnson) who shares a bond with a silverback gorilla that turns the gentle ape into a giant and aggressive beast after a rogue genetic experiment that goes wrong. Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, and Joe Manganiello round out the film, directed by Brad Peyton.
Still, positive word of mouth should drive Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place” to another strong weekend.

That timeless game of adolescence, Truth or Dare, may sound silly in an adult context — but what if refusing to spill your darkest secrets had lethal consequences? With that outrageous moral dilemma at its center, “Truth or Dare” takes audience on a wild, gruesome ride. The bloody Blumhouse production is clearly designed to build on 2017’s surprise horror hit “Happy Death Day,” and while it doesn’t quite hit the same stride, “Truth or Dare” is still a crowdpleaser that has just enough tension, jump-scares, and twisted deaths to please horror lovers eager for some thrills.

The title of this horror movie on-screen is officially “Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare,” maybe to differentiate it from, say, “Madonna: Truth or Dare” or some other film based around this game, which may still be popular among more repressed high school and college students. Anyone who played truth or dare as a teenager will know that it usually ends badly, but not quite as badly or ludicrously as it does here.
The concept in this horror movie “Truth or Dare” is that the game itself is somehow possessed by a demon, and this means that, whenever a participant is possessed by said demon, they are forced to make the face that Karen Black makes at the end of the cult TV movie “Trilogy of Terror.” Black pulled that face just once at the end of the Zuni doll segment, but the unfortunate cast of “Truth or Dare” is forced to make it continually throughout the film, often with laughable results, even when it is accompanied (as it sometimes is) by red demon eyes.
“Truth or Dare” begins with a battered-looking woman who grimaces into that Karen Black mug before lighting another woman on fire. We then meet the main characters of the film, young people who are all going down to Mexico for spring break. Director Jeff Wadlow (“Kick-Ass 2”) indulges in some split-screen effects under the credits to show us their progress and their drunken, obnoxious spring break revels. If the intention was to make us hate them and want to see them suffer, mission accomplished.
Watch Video: 'Truth or Dare' Trailer: Watch Lucy Hale and Tyler Posey Play Deadly Game
Olivia (Lucy Hale) is a petite brunette moralist, and her best friend Markie (Violett Beane, “The Flash”) is a blonde who is in mourning for her father, who recently committed suicide. Penelope (Sophia Ali, “Grey’s Anatomy”) has a drinking problem, and her boyfriend Tyson (Nolan Gerard Funk, “The Canyons”) is a medical student who sells prescriptions of Adderall and other drugs to fellow students. Lucas (Tyler Posey) is Markie’s boyfriend, and Brad (Hayden Szeto, “The Edge of Seventeen”) is a gay guy who is closeted to his family. Rounding out the cast is Ronnie (Sam Lerner, “The Goldbergs”), who acts aggressive to compensate for his feelings of inadequacy.
All of them are roped into playing a game of truth or dare by Carter (Landon Liboiron, “Frontier”), and the results are as expected, at first. Ronnie is made to give Tyson a lap dance, and Brad admits that he wouldn’t mind making out with Carter, but “Truth or Dare” is squeamish when it comes to sex or nudity. When Lucas is made to get naked, he runs around in the dark in such a way that we barely see any of his body.

The editing here by Sean Albertson (“Warrior”) is expert and fast and helps to move this enterprise along, but it can be a little abrupt, as when Brad moves in to kiss a guy during spring break, and the camera cuts away as soon as it can. (Does this count as some kind of progress in depicting a same-sex kiss of any kind in a studio movie?)
There is a very suspenseful and well-shot sequence where Penelope is walking along the edge of a roof of a house while drinking, and Olivia and her friends have to try to save her, but Wadlow falters whenever he has to rely on Google searches and Facebook clicking to give us plot exposition. You can’t avoid texting and online searching in movies now because that’s the way we live our lives, but no one has been able to make this cinematically exciting yet, unfortunately.

The premise of “Truth or Dare” is needlessly convoluted, and it is overloaded with information and side characters. By the time Olivia is driving down to Mexico to meet a deus ex machina nun named Sister Inez (Vera Taylor) to solve the mystery of why they have been possessed by this game, “Truth or Dare” has entered pretty absurd territory.

Some horror films deal in torture, some are torture to sit through, and some, like “Truth or Dare,” take off from a premise that is, in a word, tortured. In this decidedly inferior Blumhouse production, a clique of college kids head down to Mexico for spring break. After a week of partying, they’re lured to a crumbling, out-of-the-way church mission, where they’re goaded into playing a midnight game of truth or dare. There are a few weird tensions and omens, but only after they get back do they realize what’s happened: They’ve been followed home by a deadly version of the game. They’re being haunted by the demon spirit of truth or dare. If your reaction to this revelation falls somewhere between “Oh, wow!” and “Huh?,” you’ll be right in sync with audiences for “Truth or Dare,” which is a frantic muddle of a who-will-be-the-next-to-die?...
