Few film credits are as respected as the late, great Roger Ebert. As a film critic, he was as insightful as he was witty. He understood that films can function as both art and entertainment. So, when he calls something a “remarkable creation” and classifies it as “miraculous,” people listen. To be more precise, the prolific film critic penned a remarkably — almost impossibly — positive review in 2012. In this review, he praised the subject as “a remarkable creation” and hailed the “authenticity and directness” of its actors. He commended the 1.5-hour romp for “blindsiding you with creative genius” and lauded it as “one of the year’s best films.”
It’s easy to forget which film Ebert is reviewing, of course. He reviewed countless works in his lifetime. So, to be direct, this stamp of critical approval was awarded to Behn Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild, and it’s a well-deserved award.

Cameron Diaz's Comeback Movie Lands On Netflix's Elite Most-Viewed Charts 3 Months After Its Release

The new Cameron Diaz movie has become a global streaming sensation. The American actor became an A-list star off the back of prominent romantic comedies from the late 1990s, including My Best Friend's Wedding (in which she played Julia Roberts' romantic rival) and There's Something About Mary (in which she played the title role opposite Ben Stiller). She has also taken on major projects in other genres, including starring in 2000's Charlie's Angels and its 2003 sequel Full Throttle, as well as voicing Princess Fiona in DreamWorks' animated Shrek franchise.
However, for a full decade between 2014 and 2024, she starred in no movies at all. Cameron Diaz retired from acting, with her final project until 2025 being the 2014 remake of Annie starring Quvenzhané Wallis and Jamie Foxx. She spent that decade focusing on her family, working to "reclaim" her life, and working in the wellness space, including launching an organic wine brand and publishing The Longevity Book.

Editor’s note: Variety has revived its “Tenpercenteries” column that chronicles the inner-workings and client signings of Hollywood’s top talent agencies and management firms. Tenpercenteries was a staple of Variety from the mid-1990s through the early 2010s. We’re happy to bring it back with a heightened focus on deals and dish involving showbiz’s top talent representation firms.
The young (and the frugal) staff members at United Talent Agency were up in arms last week, sources told Tenpercenteries, over news from leadership that the company was suspending its free lunch service.
What began as a post-pandemic perk to lure staff back into the office had miraculously and generously lasted until 2025. UTA was serving up dishes from Leora, the restaurant that sits in the agency’s shadow in Beverly Hills. A turkey club sandwich will run you $15 and a sesame ginger salad sets you back $22.

Just short of two years ago Leslie Siebert was promoted to the top role at Gersh as co-president along with the talent agency founder’s sons, David and Bob Gersh, as the trio took significant outside financing from a private equity firm to fuel growth.
Now Siebert, who joined the firm in 1984, has been elevated to the sole president as the Gersh sons transition from day-to-day management and take co-chairmen roles, the agency said on Tuesday.
David and Bob Gersh will stay engaged at the agency, continue to rep their clients, stay on the board of directors and will plot moves as the company branches out further into sports representation. But Siebert will take over the daily management of the full-service firm that hopes to be an alternative to Big 3 players CAA, WME and UTA. Siebert will become the first woman to lead the agency.

For those with Hollywood dreams, whether it's acting in films or directing them, their biggest aspiration may be to win an Oscar. "Academy Award winner" would be forever attached to their name, and presumably, doors would open in their careers that had never opened before.
While the Oscars certainly recognize performers and filmmakers for their exceptional talents and place them in a class above the rest, they also bring high expectations. After winning, there will always be pressure to live up to that title, which may be impossible to achieve again. This is part of the dreaded "Oscar curse." What happens after you've achieved the biggest honor in Hollywood?
Oscar campaigns and wins can be just as much of a story as the movies themselves. Hollywood's publicity machine spins a specific narrative to help an artist win the coveted award — the higher the stakes or the more cultural impact, the better.

Cynthia Erivo made Oscar history on Thursday morning with her Best Actress bid for Wicked. She is now only the second Black female performer to receive multiple bids in this category, after Viola Davis.
Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch of the West, in director Jon M. Chu‘s big-budget adaptation of the beloved Broadway stage musical. Wicked actually marks her second Best Actress mention after Harriet (2019), for which she also earned a Best Song bid for “Stand Up” (cowritten with Joshuah Brian Campbell). Wicked received 10 Oscar nominations this year, including for Erivo’s supporting co-star Ariana Grande.
Davis was the first to accomplish such a feat, thanks to her double Best Actress Oscar bids for The Help (2011) and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020). While she lost both of those contests, she did win the Best Supporting Actress prize for Fences (2016); she also had a prior bid in that...

In Marc Forster's 2001 drama "Monster's Ball," Halle Berry plays Leticia Musgrove, a woman at the end of her rope. Her husband has been convicted of murder and is executed by the state of Georgia early in the film. Leticia is trying to put her life back together when her son Tyrell (Coronji Calhoun) is hit by a car and dies. Leticia can only find comfort in the arms of a gruff prison warden named Hank (Billy Bob Thornton), whose own son (Heath Ledger) recently died by suicide. What Leticia doesn't know, however, is that Hank oversaw her husband's execution. It's all very complicated, but handled tactfully and with the utmost sensitivity. "Monster's Ball" is a pretty great film.
Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress for playing Leticia at the 2002 Academy Awards ceremony, beating out Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Sissy Spacek, and Renée Zellweger. Her victory was well-deserved.

Kevin Hart wearing a dress on SNL was a pretty huge thing in 2013. He had previously stated in multiple interviews that he would never wear a dress on screen. Moreover, he had turned down the role of Alpa Chino in Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder because he didn’t want to play the ‘flagrant’ gay character. These factors all made his SNL impression of child actress Quvenzhané Wallis headlines at the time.

After teaming with Noah Baumbach to direct one of the best-ever documentaries about filmmaking, De Palma, Jake Paltrow is back with a new feature. June Zero is a vividly textured telling of the preparations for the 1962 execution of Adolf Eichmann through a triptych of perspectives––a Jewish Moroccan prison guard, an Israeli police investigator (and Holocaust survivor), and a clever and precocious 13-year-old Libyan immigrant. In advance of the June 28 release from Cohen Media Group, we’re pleased to exclusively reveal a series of influences the director has programmed for NYC’s Quad Cinema.
“Origin Stories: Jake Paltrow’s Notes on June Zero,” which runs June 21-27, features seven films that informed and influenced June Zero, with titles spanning humanist deep-cuts of world cinema from the likes of Miloš Forman and Abbas Kiarostami to underscreened classics of 1970s Israeli cinema. A far-sighted scientist is living with his wife and daughter in what remains of Brooklyn in 2039. Then Milla Jovovich arrives
The planet has finally conked out; it went not with a boom or a bang, but choking on a last gasp of polluted air. This frighteningly plausible end-of-the-world scenario is probably the most convincing detail in this solidly acted but underwhelming post-apocalyptic thriller. It’s set in 2039, six years after the conk-out; in Brooklyn, one family is miraculously still alive in a bunker built by scientist and survivalist Darius (Common). He spent years planning for the end of the world; everyone thought he was a crackpot, says his teenage daughter Zora (Quvenzhané Wallis). “Too bad he wasn’t.” Handily, her mum is gardener Maya (Jennifer Hudson). So the three of them – along with Darius’s dad – keep healthy on homegrown greens.

"Think about your daughter and do the right thing!" Capstone Pictures has revealed an official trailer for a sci-fi survival thriller titled Breathe, the latest by a director named Stefon Bristol, who also made the small scale sci-fi comedy See You Yesterday previously. In a stark future where Earth's air is no longer safe, the few remaining survivors would be left to scrap and claw for every last store of oxygen. That's the terrifying reality imagined by Stefon Bristol's upcoming action thriller Breathe, which stars Jennifer Hudson and Quvenzhané Wallis as a mother and daughter who are limited to living underground when the surface becomes uninhabitable. A new trailer shared today shows their desperate fight for survival when confronted by strangers seeking shelter whose intentions may not be as benevolent as they initially seem.

Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.

Swagger season 1 ran for 10 episodes in 2021 and the second season of Swagger for eight...

The Apple TV Plus original sports drama series Swagger impressed audiences during its first two seasons, but details of season 3 are slow to arrive. Debuting in 2021, the show follows an ensemble of characters who are swept up into the political world of youth basketball as they all vie for a future on the sport's grandest stage, the NBA. Swagger is loosely based on the real-life story of NBA player Kevin Durant, who also serves as an executive producer, and this gives the series a more realistic tone. Unlike other sports series, Swagger paints a clearer picture of what the life of an aspiring professional athlete is actually like.
Immediately met with glowing reviews, many critics praised Swagger's messaging and confidence which helped elevate it above the usual sports fare (via Rotten Tomatoes). Joining a long list of well-received original series on Apple TV Plus, Swagger is seen as Ted...

Lisa Rinna is best known for playing the characters of Billie Reed on Days of Our Lives and Taylor McBride on Melrose Place… or at least she was, until she was featured on eight seasons of the reality series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. That may be what most viewers recognize her from these days. But Rinna recently left that Real Housewives show, and now Deadline reports that she has signed on to appear in an episode of the Hulu horror anthology series American Horror Stories.
The episode Rinna will be in is titled Tapeworm, and most of the filming of that episode was already completed before Deadline confirmed her involvement. That’s the only information that’s available at this time.
American Horror Stories is a streaming series spin-off from FX’s long-running horror anthology series American Horror Story. Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck, the same...

It’s appropriate that Netflix dropped the sixth season of “Black Mirror” on June 15, the same day that Emmy voting began. The series isn’t eligible for this year’s awards, of course, but it has been a dominant force at the Emmys for years, even sparking a rule change that affects a number of other anthology programs this year.
And because of that rule change, it’s going to be a lot harder for any of those other programs — which include “Documentary Now!” and “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” — to be nominated for Emmys this year.
First, a little background. “Black Mirror,” created by Charlie Brooker and first airing in 2011, was inspired by the classic 1950s and ’60s series “The Twlight Zone,” in which Rod Serling used each episode to tell a different story — usually creepy or scary, usually with a twist, always with a moral. Back then,...
