When Hwang Dong-hyuk's "Squid Game" season 2 debuted on Netflix last December, there was an expectation that it would be the biggest streaming sensation of 2024. The first season was wildly popular when it arrived one year after the 2020 Covid-19 lockdowns, so anticipation for another sordid dive back into the series' dystopian universe was through the roof. How much bigger could "Squid Game" get?
Luckily for Netflix, "Squid Game" has delivered as promised. According to What's on Netflix, the streamer's subscribers have spent more than 1.342 billion hours watching the show's second season since it premiered a little over three months ago. That's an impressive number, and one that Netflix badly needed to reach to justify it reportedly spending a heck of a lot more on "Squid Game" season 2 alone than it did season 1 (which was budgeted at $21.4 million). That number may tick even further upwards as the already-filmed -- and almost...

In a year where the K-drama industry is booming, the largest trend that’s taking over is creating “universes,” like Marvel. It is quite a shame that the genre, which was known for compelling storytelling that viewers related to, has suddenly chosen to look to the West for inspiration. On the other hand, there’s the obsession with webcomics being adapted for our screens, which is, of course, super exciting, but what happens to the original stuff? Don’t get me wrong; each of these approaches has churned out some gems, but it occasionally feels like something’s been lost. I will admit I found my love for K-dramas again this year. I can’t believe it’s been a decade since I started watching K-dramas, and over the years I used to consume everything thrown at me blindly. But, a few years ago, I realized I was exhausting myself instead of enjoying this pastime.

Marry My Husband may not have made as much noise as other hit 2024 shows, but it was one of the best K-dramas of the year. With an impressive career that includes some of the best K-dramas of all time, Park Min-young is a fan-favorite actress whose new projects are always exciting by default. As soon as it was announced that Park Min-young was going to play the female lead in a brand-new K-drama based on a webtoon, Marry My Husband became one of the most anticipated K-dramas of 2024.
Park Min-young has played a lot of great characters in her career, although Kim Min-so in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim is arguably her most iconic. Netflixs new original K-drama Mr. Plankton is the perfect show for those who liked Queen of Tears. One of the best K-dramas of 2024, Queen of Tears aired for eight weeks and delivered an unusual yet compelling love story about a married couple trying to rebuild their relationship amidst secrets, ghosts from the past, and life-changing decisions. Queen of Tearss ending broke a lot of records and even surpassed Crash on Landing on Yous finale to become tvNs highest-rated episode, which shows how successful the K-drama starring Kim Ji-won and Kim Soo-hyun was.
Queen of Tears' cast, writing, and production value were some of the reasons why the show became so popular and achieved such impressive viewership numbers. Although it might take some time before another romantic K-drama becomes as big as Queen of Tears, 2024 has seen plenty of other great shows in that genre. Martial arts techniques are seen in a variety of K-dramas, adding an appreciated kick to stories concerning revenge, paranormal hunters, and corrupt officials. Some of the most action-packed K-dramas contain martial arts sequences, which take the choreographed fighting to a whole other level. Like the best martial arts performances in films and TV shows, such scenes are executed best when they're filmed and choreographed with a creative approach. When these elements come together neatly in martial arts TV shows, the small-screen action can feel reminiscent of that seen in theatrical releases.
It isn't a requirement of martial arts K-dramas, but some choose to incorporate the learning of a martial art within a character's journey, as seen with boxing in Bloodhounds and taekwondo in Fight for My Way. Other series like Vagabond present their characters as already adept martial artists. Regardless of how it's introduced into the narrative, the best martial...

There are several incredible K-drama actors, and many of them have never acted in projects together. This is despite the fact that some actor pairings feel as though they would be perfect choices for any k-drama, fitting all sorts of different genres, covering everything from comedy to crime drama. Many of them have been the subject of perfect k-drama casting before, and with these co-stars they could be again.
Choosing co-stars for any show requires striking a delicate balance, finding what works about an actor's performance and amplifying that quality. It is this sort of chemistry and hard work that has resulted in some of the best k-dramas of all time. More great k-dramas could be made with these actor pairings, and hopefully viewers will have the opportunity to see them share the screen in the future.

The cast of Fight For My Way has been in some of the best, most popular K-dramas of 2024, and that is a perfect reminder to revisit the 2017 show. Starring Park Seo-joon, Kim Ji-won, Ahn Jae-hong, and Song Ha-yoon, Fight For My Way tells the story of four young adults trying to navigate life and love. Despite its simple premise, Fight For My Way became a fan favorite and is often listed as one of the best slice-of-life K-dramas. Not only did it have a fun story, but it also featured a promising cast of up-and-coming stars.
The fact that Fight For My Way continues to be included in the best K-dramas of all time lists seven years after its premiere speaks to how well-received the 2017 series was. While it had two love stories, one of which was a classic friends-to-lovers arc, Fight For My Way was much more than just a romance K-drama.

Korean Drama or K-Drama has been growing in popularity over the last few years. As usual, regional television shows generally hit their peak within the country that it’s produced in. For instance, back in the 1960s and 1970s, K-Drama was consumed almost exclusively in Korea.
Eventually, Korean-based projects made their way across the world following the end of the military rule in South Korea. Obviously, there would have been much more to watch during that time than just Death Row Prisoner (1956).

Queen of Tears has been 2024's biggest K-drama so far. Success factors include writer Park Ji-eun and Kim Soo-hyun/Kim Ji-won's performances. Love Next Door, starring Jung So-min and Jung Hae-in, could be this year's "next Queen of Tears."
Queen of Tears is the biggest K-drama hit of 2024, but Jung So-min's upcoming series could take its place. Starring Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won, Queen of Tears takes an unconventional approach by depicting the love story of a couple on the brink of divorce. Every episode brought a new twist, allowing the series to race towards Crash Landing on You's record as Tvn's most-watched K-drama of all time. Park Seo-joon & Kim Ji-won had fantastic chemistry in Fight For My Way. The show was very funny with great lead couple moments. A new collaboration between Park Seo-joon and Kim Ji-won could be great considering how great their dynamic in Fight For My Way was.
Park Seo-joons best K-drama couple came from Fight For My Way, and I would love for him and Kim Ji-won to be on a project together again. From a failed athlete trying to reclaim the dream that was stolen from him to an egoistic owner of a pawnshop fighting monsters in 1994 Korea, Park Seo-joons K-drama career includes a lot of great characters.
