Rapper J. Cole returned to the spotlight with his latest track, “Port Antonio,” where he reflects on his decision to step away from the ongoing feud between two of rap’s biggest names, Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
The German-born, North Carolina-raised rapper’s surprise release, shared on Instagram, isn’t just about distancing himself from the conflict. Instead, Cole uses the track to critique the toxic dynamics that fuel the genre’s and fans’ fixation on drama.
“I can see hate in both of your eyes but the third’s blind / So you search lines / But you struggle, which explains the puzzled look on the dull face as the word finds,” Cole raps. He references the hostility between Drake and Lamar, noting that while they may be fueled by anger, they’re missing the higher wisdom symbolized by the third eye.

There’s no other anime in the history of the world that has had a greater influence on global pop culture than Dragon Ball. Every year since 2015, fans can see Super Saiyan Blue Goku floating around in the streets of New York during Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. The martial arts presented in Dragon Ball were a huge inspiration for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Everyone from Frank Ocean to Joey Bada$$ and even Drake has made references to Dragon Ball Z in their songs, with Drake even depicting using a Kamehameha wave in a fictional dance match with Chris Brown. On the other hand, fans also know that Dragon Ball was in turn influenced by Western media like Star Wars, Cinderella, and Jackie Chan movies. But there’s another aspect of Dragon Ball that...

Eminem has dropped a new music video for his song “Temporary” that’s filled with old home movies, and also a few new ones, including a clip where the rapper learns he’s going to be a grandfather.

The clip largely consists of old footage of father and daughter from the late Nineties and early 2000s, just as Eminem’s star was ascending. It’s interspersed with some more recent clips, including footage from Hailie’s wedding,...

Who is Katy Perry? As she reminded people in the initial run-up to her comeback single “Woman’s World,” where she dusted off her six RIAA-bestowed Diamond awards, she’s one of the biggest-selling pop stars of the millennium, with fizzy, playful tracks like “California Gurls” and strident empowerment anthems like “Firework” racking up millions of sales. She’s judged wannabes on American Idol; she’s headlined the Super Bowl halftime show; she’s celebrated a king’s coronation. She’s done it all, backwards and in heels.

Eminem is set to open the 2024 MTV VMAs with the first TV show performance from his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady.
The rapper is nominated for eight VMAs this year, including video of the year, best hip-hop, song of the summer and VMAs’ most iconic performance for his 2000 medley of “Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am,” which included more than 100 look-alikes.
Currently tied with Peter Gabriel for the most VMA wins by a solo male artist in show history, Eminem could break that record with just one win this year. He also holds the record for most wins by a rap artist with 13 VMAs and is the second most nominated artist in VMAs history with 67 nods, trailing only Madonna with 71 nods.

The pandemic encouraged much of the world to pursue new (and likely temporary) hobbies — kitchen chemists experimented with sourdough starters, homeowners convinced themselves to be home renovators, and binge-watchers got really into Tiger King. For a then 14-year-old Laila Smith, it was GarageBand. Experimenting with Apple’s free music production software turned into posting her first song, “Like That,” to TikTok in 2023 as Laila!. The 32-second stop-motion clip of herself posing under blue and red lights holding a stuffed Pikachu pulled a million views but reached an algorithmic fever-pitch when...

The internet let out a collective sob when Beyoncé’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, shut down rumors that the 32-time Grammy winner would be performing at the Democratic National Convention.
“At home watching and anticipating the VP’s historic speech,” wrote Noel-Schure prior to Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Nominee, taking the stage on Thursday. “Focus on the win and register to vote. Do not report rumors. Focus.”
Her post was seen as a direct reference to rampant speculation that the Renaissance star would appear at the four-day long event.

“Rump Punch,” an early single from the Bronx drill Casanova Cash Cobain’s new album Play Cash Cobain, rides a glittering piano riff layered over the rapper-producer’s signature drums—boisterous and staggered, the air in between each drop packed with a sly romantic tension. Cash is a blueprint for a new kind of rap-r&b crossover. Lyrically, he’s able to turn top-tier raunchiness into something smoother (Pussy taste like rum punch,” he cooly raps on the track), all while he builds out a sonic universe that’s taking the rap world by storm.

Tensions have been running high in hip-hop over the last few months since Kendrick Lamar unofficially declared 2024 the Year of the Hater. This hunger for confrontation has spilled over the edge so much that rappers are now finding themselves at odds not with another rapper but with that artist’s fanbase. Big Sean is the latest musician to get caught in a battle of pettiness and disrespect, with his opponent being Kanye West’s fanbase — a member of which allegedly leaked the Detroit rapper’s upcoming album.

Eminem has dropped a grisly music video for “Tobey,” his latest Death of Slim Shady single with Big Sean and BabyTron.
The Cole Bennett-directed clip finds the three Michigan MCs digitally duplicated, delivering their verses and interacting with their doubles as the camera roams through a variety of settings, like a warehouse, hotel room, and club. When it finally gets to Eminem’s verse, the setting switches to the front of a house that looks a lot like the one on the cover of The Marshall Mathers LP.

In Eminem’s version of the Spider-Man superhero origin story, it’s not a radioactive spider that sinks its teeth into him — it’s a goat. The rapper spins this new narrative on his latest single, “Tobey,” set to appear on his forthcoming studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), when it arrives on July 12.
The single features Big Sean and BabyTron, who Eminem positions as the other two rap figures in his version of the three Spider-Men pointing at each other meme. “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider,...

Eminem has released the second single from his upcoming album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), a Michigan posse cut titled “Tobey” featuring BabyTron and Big Sean. Stream it below.
Featuring a Spider-Man referencing chorus from BabyTron (“Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider”), the new track positions each rapper as one of the best from the Detroit area, complete with a reference to the Spider-Man pointing meme in the artwork.
Rapping over bells and a hard rock guitar riff, BabyTron sets the pace by spitting, “My city Leia and I’m Obi-Wan/ Got a mission to pass, I might just be the hope.” Big Sean follows suit with another Star Wars reference and big ups his city: “Bitch, I come from the D where they BMFing/ Where they movin’ them keys like a chord progression.”

Jack White returned to his hometown of Detroit on Thursday night for a performance at the Eminem-produced Michigan Central Station concert, celebrating the rebirth of the city’s once-shuttered train station.
Commenting that some of the songs he was playing were “written a few blocks from here,” White delivered an impassioned three-song set that featured a performance of “Hotel Yorba” within eyesight of the literal Hotel Yorba building, and closing-number “Seven Nation Army,” which included a moment where the crowd sang the iconic riff acapella before the band came back in with blistering energy. He also Jimi Hendrix’s “Hear My Train a Comin.'”
White’s set marked his first performance since his “Supply Chain Issues Tour” and 2023 Saturday Night Live appearance. Directly after he played, Eminem took the stage for a surprise performance that included the live debut of his new song “Houdini,” and ended with an anthemic rendition of “Not Afraid.

Eminem made a surprise appearance at a concert celebrating the grand reopening of the Michigan Central Station in Detroit on Thursday night.
Accompanied by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the rapper delivered a four-song set that included the live debut of his new single “Houdini.” He also performed “Sing for the Moment” with country singer Jelly Roll handling the song’s chorus, and teamed up with fellow Detroit rapper Trick Trick to perform their 2005 collaboration, “Welcome 2 Detroit.” Eminem closed his set with “Not Afraid.”
Eminem and his longtime manager, Paul Rosenberg, served as executive producers of the concert, which marked the reopening of Michigan Central Station, a one-time historic train depot that was shuttered in 1988 and remained vacant until it was purchased by the Ford Motor Company in 2018. Following a six-year restoration it reopened on Thursday as mixed use facility.

When USC professor and hip-hop scholar Todd Boyd remembers hearing Tupac Shakur’s scathing diss track “Hit ‘Em Up,” he knew one thing: “This is not going to end well.”
The West Coast anthem was released in June 1996 and Shakur viciously took aim at his East Coast rivals, including the Notorious B.I.G. with claims — through strikingly chosen words — that he slept with Biggie’s wife, R&b singer Faith Evans.
The rap war escalated to new heights, and three months later Shakur was shot to death in Las Vegas, with some wondering (though apparently incorrectly) whether the beef had anything to with it. And a few months after that, Biggie was shot dead in Los Angeles though his killer never apprehended.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s current rap beef has Boyd reflecting on the past.
