Barbie's co-casting directors Allison Jones and Lucy Bevan recently revealed that several candidates for the fantasy-comedy's Tourist Ken role had to be told to put their shirts back on during their auditions.

Jones and Bevan recalled how multiple actors who read for the part of Ken's (Ryan Gosling) arch-rival went topless in an interview with The Credits. "Those scenes were fun to audition," Bevan said. "Some of the Kens would take off their T-shirts, and we were like, 'No, no, you don't need to take off your T-shirt.' But [successful candidate] Simu [Liu] just nailed that ["beach off" line] in the film." Jones then chimed in with what director Greta Gerwig was looking for from Barbie's Ken performers. "The thing that Greta did always stress was that none of these people were sarcastic or winking at the camera. They were really Kens and Barbies," she said.

As the arthouse cinema market continues to regain its footing, the list of what may be considered an overlooked film could be quite vast, depending on one’s metrics. For our yearly feature highlighting the 50 most overlooked films––arriving before our overall top 50 films––we’ve sought to dig deep to find the gems that deserved more attention upon their initial release and have mostly been left out of year-end conversations. Hopefully, with many widely available on a variety of streaming platforms, they will begin to find an expanded audience.

Sadly, many documentaries would qualify for this list, but we stuck strictly to narrative efforts; one can instead read our rundown of the top docs here. While they aren’t included on this list, we also hope a number of 2022 qualifying films find an audience when they get a proper release next year, including Saint Omer, One Fine Morning, and Return to Seoul.

Jurassic World Dominion is hoping to snare the top spot from Top Gun: Maverick at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, after two weeks at the number one for Paramount’s Tom Cruise hit.

Universal is distributing Jurassic World Dominion at 708 sites – Universal’s fourth biggest UK-Ireland opening of all time, behind No Time To Die (772),Downton Abbey: A New Era (746) and Downton Abbey (730). The Colin Trevorrow-directed title opened with 55m from early markets last week, and expands to North America, UK/Ireland, China, France, Germany, Australia and Spain this weekend.

To mark the film’s release we had the pleasure of speaking to its co-writers, Tom Stourton and Tom Palmer – while the former also plays the leading role Pete, in the movie. We look back over their long-standing friendship, and their dynamic as a writing-duo. They tell us why they decided to star/or not star in the film, and the casting of Dustin Demri-Burns. Cary Joji Fukunaga’s long awaited Bond flick “No Time to Die,” the final instalment featuring long-time lead Daniel Craig, will close this year’s EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival, presented by Joji Fukunaga (“Beasts of No Nation”) himself and the film’s Oscar-winning cinematographer Lunus Sandgren (“La La Land”).

“This is the first time Cary Joji Fukunaga and Linus Sandgren collaborated on a film project, yet the result is just the kind of visual spectacle we hoped for given their artistic portfolios,” said the festival in a release accompanying the announcement.

This will be Joji Fukunaga’s first time attending EnergaCamerimage in person, although his film “Jane Eyre” and the “True Detective” pilot episode he directed both screened at the fest. Sandgren is becoming something of an EnergaCamerimage regular, having presented in person two films on which he worked, Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land” and “First Man.”

Variety Director to Watch Prano Bailey-Bond (“Censor”) and BAFTA-nominated “After Love” filmmaker Aleem Khan are among the 39 filmmakers longlisted in the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) new talent categories.

The 39 longlisted filmmakers will be invited to join BIFA’s Springboard scheme, a tailored program of professional development, peer-to-peer support, mentoring, networking and skills enhancement aimed to nurture emerging talent as they build on the success of their first features.

The final five nominations in each category will be announced on Nov. 3. Winners will be revealed at the ceremony on Dec. 5.

Andrew Gaynord’s feature debut is set for release in 2022.

BFI Distribution has acquired UK comedy All My Friends Hate Me, for release in the UK and Ireland in 2022.

The deal was finalised just ahead of the film’s UK premiere at the 65th BFI London Film Festival on Friday (October 8). WME Independent handled the sale with BFI Acquisitions Manager Laura Dos Santos. it has already been acquired for North America by Super.

The film – which premiered at Tribeca – is Andrew Gaynord’s feature debut. Gaynord’s previous credits include Netflix series The Characters.

All My Friends Hate Me is...

Super Ltd has acquired North American rights to All My Friends Hate Me, the UK comedy horror thriller directed by Andrew Gaynord that world premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

In the film, a college reunion goes awry when Pete (Tom Stourton) suspects his friends may be out to get him. As their weekend getaway grows more and more uncomfortable, should he be worried about his safety, or is it all in his head? Stourton and Tom Palmer wrote the script for the pic, which also stars Charly Clive, Georgina Campbell, Joshua Mcguire and Antonia Clarke.

Palmer is the producer.

Super Ltd’s Mason Speta negotiated the deal with Endeavor Content on behalf of the filmmakers.

Tom Stourton co-wrote the screenplay and stars.

The film received its world premiere in the international narrative competition and centres on a college reunion that turns sour when Pete suspects his friends may be out to get him.

The Brit List, the UK’s version of the Black List, received 134 script recommendations this year. The list of praiseworthy unproduced film scripts was led by supernatural thriller Benny In The Dark from screenwriter Phillip Morgan. Check out the full-list below.

The list, managed by UK producer Alexandra Arlango (The Duchess), is pulled together from recommendations by more than 90 UK film companies. To qualify, projects must receive a minimum of three recommendations.

The Brit List celebrates its tenth anniversary this year with a networking event in London on Monday 19 November. Since launch, 70 movies to appear on the list have gone into production, including pics such as The King’s Speech and Lion. The Brit List, the annual collection of unproduced UK screenplays, has unveiled its 2018 line up.

Now in its 10th year, the list highlights film projects voted for by an anonymous group of film industry professionals from more than 90 companies, including agents, financiers, producers and distributors.

This year there are 18 projects on the list. Topping them is Phillip Morgan’s Benny In The Dark, a supernatural thriller set in the 1950s, which received a total of nine recommendations. The film is set up at Tessa Ross and Juliette Howell’s House Productions.

Production is under way on Altitude Film Entertainment and Citrus Films’ family movie Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans, based on the popular children’s book series by Terry Deary and illustrated by Martin Brown.

Shooting now on location in the UK and Bulgaria, the film will cast the antics of the Roman Empire in a comedic light. It will follow Atti, a Roman teenager with brains but very little brawn. When one of his clever schemes falls foul of Emperor Nero, he is forced to join the army and is sent to miserable, cold, wet Britain where the natives are revolting – quite literally. Things go from bad to worse when Atti is captured by Orla, a feisty teenage Celt desperate to prove herself as a warrior.

Dominic Brigstocke, director of the TV version of the series, will make his feature directorial debut. Script comes from Jessica Swale together with Giles Pilbrow and Caroline Norris.

New images also released of the feature centred on the first person to successfully swim the English Channel.

Justin Hardy’s Captain Webb, which tells the story of the first man to successfully swim the English Channel in 1875, is set to be released in cinemas on August 14. Miramax handles worldwide TV distribution.

The film stars Warren Brown (Luther, Good Cop) in the lead role of Captain Webb, whilst Terry Mynott (The Mimic) plays Captain Paul Boyton, Webb’s Us rival who developed a rubber, kayak-like suit for his own crossing attempt.

Steve Oram (Sightseers) assumes the role of Webb’s eccentric trainer Professor Beckwith, whilst Hannah Tointon (The Inbetweeners), Georgia Maguire (Love me till Monday) and Tom Stourton (Horrible Histories) make up the principle cast.

The Doctor's latest adversary has been unveiled online.

The sinister-looking creature, obscured by gloom but looking like a cross between a Yo Gabba Gabba character and a Sky HD Box, will feature in the upcoming series of Doctor Who later this year.

The BBC tweeted the picture earlier today (April 21), revealing that Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman will come face-to-face with the monster in the ninth series.

Doctor Who will return to BBC One in the autumn, with Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams appearing in one episode.

Comedian Rufus Hound and Siblings' Tom Stourton have also been announced for guest starring roles in series nine, along with Ariyon Bakare, Simon Lipkin, Ian Conningham, Murray McArthur, Barnaby Kay, John Voce and Struan Rodger.

Maisie Williams is to appear in the new series of Doctor Who.

The Game of Thrones actress will guest star in an episode of the sci-fi drama when it returns for its ninth run in the autumn.

Williams, whose role has not yet been revealed, said: "I'm so excited to be working on Doctor Who as it's such a big and important part of British culture.

"I can't wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we'll be shooting not too far from my home town."

Showrunner Steven Moffat added: "We're thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It's not possible to say too much about who or what she's playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways.

"This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.
