When a horror film subverts your expectations, that’s almost always a recipe for success. One would be easily forgiven for assuming that St. Agatha would traffic in the same sort of territory as last year’s awful The Nun. Instead, while still thoroughly being a fright flick, this effort goes in a whole other direction. It gets pretty ridiculous towards the end, but for large swarths of the picture, it focuses on something grittier, more intense, and much more based in reality. By no stretch is this one of the genre’s best efforts, but it does way more right than it does wrong. The movie is a horror experience, tinged with religious extremism, or so it seems. Taking place in a small Georgia town during the 1950’s, we follow a pregnant con woman on the run named Mary (Sabrina Kern). Seeking refuge, she ends up in a convent...

"There is no wrong or right in this place. You're just choosing not to see it." Signature Entertainment in the UK has debuted the official UK trailer for an indie horror thriller titled St. Agatha, the latest from horror director Darren Lynn Bousman. This new "twisted horror thriller" is said to push the boundaries of the "nunsploitation" genre, in a story set at a convent in Georgia. A pregnant young woman named Mary ends up there, seeking shelter only to be met with an unsettling and horrendous evil waiting on the other side. St. Agatha stars Sabrina Kern, Carolyn Hennesy, Courtney Halverson, Trin Miller, Lindsay Seim, Hannah Fierman and Seth Michaels. The footage from this trailer does look freaky, especially near the end when it goes all out crazy. Scary stuff. Here's the official UK trailer (+ poster) for Darren Lynn Bousman's St. Agatha, direct from YouTube: Set in the...

Captain Fantastic may sound like the title of comic book movie but this warm, thoughtful film centers on a different kind of hero, a father who has devoted his life to his children. He is indeed a fantastic father, even if his ideas about how to raise his kids is far out of the mainstream, something which comes to the fore when his family faces a life-altering crisis. Captain Fantastic is an emotionally moving film that mixes drama and a bit of humor in a touching story of an unconventional family who have to work through their grief to find a new way to interact with conventional society.
Viggo Mortensen turns in a wonderful performance as that father, Ben Cash. Ben and his wife Leslie (Trin Miller) chose to leave prosperous conventional lives behind to raise their six children in a counter-culture utopia off the grid – way off the grid.

You often have to take praise that comes from the Sundance Film Festival with a grain of salt. That being said, when a title goes from Sundance to the Cannes Film Festival, that’s a sign that we have quality on our hands. This movie wound up blowing me away when I saw it last month, and this week it hits theaters. Not only did it surprise me with how tremendous it was, I was absolutely thrilled with how it even exceeded the reviews that had come previously. Filmmaker Matt Ross has something pretty special on his hands here, and I really hope that it gets properly appreciated by audiences. The film is an often funny drama about a pseudo survivalist named Ben (Viggo Mortensen) and his very unusual family. Hidden away in a remote part of the pacific northwest, Ben and his wife Leslie (Trin Miller) are raising six kids decidedly off the grid.

If anything can really mess with your head it’s family. In horror movies this is a trope used a lot, the return to the family home to find the truth from the past, which is always a good place to start for a film. An example of a film that uses this is The Invoking.
When Samantha (Trin Miller) and a few of her friends travel to her home town Sader Ridge to inspect a property she’s inherited it’s not long before she starts to experience violent visions within the house. There are so many sub-genres in horror. The vampire movie, zombie apocalypses, torture porn. But there's nothing more classic and purely fright-inducing than the things that go bump in the night. To celebrate this week's release of The Invoking, we bring you our Top 13 Favorite Haunted House Movies.
Is anything creepier than when your own house turns against you? You can (theoretically) get away from zombies, vamps, slashers and werewolves. But when your own home sweet home is the enemy… it's tough to recover from that.
We have some great Honorable Mentions to start off with. Fantastic director James Wan really seems to have a knack for the haunted house movie as he has one entry on the list itself and also gets a nod for Insidious, a creative look at the inner, an outer, workings of a haunted house. A Haunting in Connecticut was impressive as, in addition to the actual haunting going on,...
