Science fiction is one of the most beloved and intriguing genres in film, literature, and television alike. The nature of sci-fi content often limits its portrayal in a visual medium. They typically include technology, scenarios, or futuristic concepts that would be impossible to display in a form other than the written word. Books have the unique ability to utilize the imagination of the reader and present stories that simply wouldn't work if presented on screen. With that being said, certain shows effectively turn their written source material into a thoughtful representation of the original story.
The most recent example of famous sci-fi literature-turned-television is Netflix's 3 Body Problem, which explores mind-blowing ideas across space and time. Given the show's popularity, Netflix is set to release a second season of the 3 Body Problem. Perhaps the most critically acclaimed sci-fi series of this nature is The Expanse, a thoughtful tale...

Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.
Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp. Nico Santos and Gus Birney even more humor to this romantic comedy story.
Here’s who plays who in “Happiness for Beginners”:
Helen (Ellie Kemper)
Ellie Kemper portrays Helen, who wants to start over after she divorces her husband. She experienced infidelity and a miscarriage during their marriage.

The premise of Vicky Wight’s Happiness for Beginners sounds like a promising invitation to indulge in an offbeat romantic comedy. It’s a Netflix offering with Hallmark Channel roots: A 30something woman embarks on a journey through the woods to recover from her divorce. What will she find on her sojourn? A renewed sense of hope? Confidence? Romance?
If we stick to the rules of the genre, our heroine Helen (Ellie Kemper) will have it all. Peace lies in the towering trees of upstate New York, where her wilderness survival course takes place. Hope looks like the bonds she makes with her fellow campers. Love takes the shape of a familiar face who helps her remember a past self. In exchange for our attention, we will be rewarded with a couple worth rooting for and learn some truths about life. We might even consider checking out Katherine Center’s novel,...

Netflix has released the first official photos from the upcoming film adaptation of Katherine Center’s bestselling novel Happiness for Beginners. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s Ellie Kemper and Yellowstone‘s Luke Grimes star in the comedy premiering on July 27, 2023.
Kemper and Grimes are joined by Nico Santos, Blythe Danner, and Benjamin Cook. Shayvawn Webster, Esteban Benito, and Julia Shiplett also star.
Describing her attraction to the project, Kemper told Netflix’s Tudum she believed it “was such a well-told story of one woman’s experience in getting to know herself better.” Kemper added, “I was immediately excited about the prospect of playing a woman whose outlook on life, when we first meet her, isn’t so sunny. I’ve played a lot of optimistic rubes, and Helen was neither.”

2020 is finally almost over and, like most people, I’m happy to see this hell year consigned into the history books. Of course, there’s no guarantee that 2021 is going to be much better, as despite a vaccine being developed, Covid-19 isn’t likely to go away anytime soon, there are several enormous divides in American society and we’re teetering on the brink of economic collapse. But hey, we might finally get to see Black Widow in theaters in May!
At least Netflix is kicking the year off with a bang, too. As is usual, there’s an avalanche of new titles hitting the service in January, including a bunch of bone-chilling movies and documentaries.
Top of the pile is 2003 Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr. and Penelope Cruz flick Gothika, which will be available from January 1st. Unjustly maligned on its original release, it’s since had a rehabilitation,...

"You don't think she knows what I'm up to?" Momentum Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie dark comedy + psychological thriller titled Black Bear, the latest from film from the mind of filmmaker Lawrence Michael Levine. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and has also been playing on the international festival circuit since then. A filmmaker at a creative impasse seeks solace from her tumultuous past at a rural retreat, only to find that the woods summon her inner demons in intense and surprising ways. Aubrey Plaza stars as the filmmaker, named Allison, pulling everyone "into a calculated game of desire, manipulation, and jealousy." Also with Christopher Abbott, Sarah Gadon, Alexander Koch, Paola Lázaro, Lindsay Burdge, and Jennifer Kim. This looks like a very intelligent, complex, even philosophical film that has much more going on within than it seems at first glance. Tricky stuff here.

But after befriending those living in squalor out of desperation, he decided to make a narrative based on their stories instead, shot in the Jungle and with some of them playing versions of themselves. The result is an astonishingly moving film that rehumanizes people who have been dehumanized in public discourse, putting faces to the still-ongoing refugee crisis and inescapably reminding us that those we’ve Othered are not very different from us. “In another life,” Syrian refugee Adnan (French actor Elie Haddad) tells us in the touching narration through which we follow his journey, “I was a teacher.” His new friends in the Jungle are other middle-class people from such far-flung places as Sudan,...

Acerbic isn’t a strong enough word to explain the singular attitude and outlook of author Maya Dardel. The gravelly-voiced has-been (well, maybe) is first introduced to the audience of Zachary Cotler and Magdalena Zyzak’s “A Critically Endangered Species” by way of a rambling NPR interview that caps off with Maya (an electric Lena Olin) announcing her intention to off herself, and that’s before the opening credits are even over. Maya is plain-spoken about her plan, only really mentioning it to tout her desire to find an heir and executor to take over her life and work (and money and house and fame and whatever else she has) after she does the deed.
Sarcastic, biting, and wholly unsentimental, Maya explains that “death’s lucrative” and she’s simply eager to get her affairs in order before shuffling off this mortal coil. She’s looking for a male author...

"We could've died out here, and it's your fault!" Oscilloscope Labs has debuted an official trailer for Sophia Takal's Always Shine, a drama about two friends from director Sophia Takal. The film stars Mackenzie Davis & Caitlin FitzGerald as actresses who go on a weekend getaway to Big Sur, but end up getting into fights and heated discussions that lead to even crazier problems. The cast includes Lawrence Michael Levine, Alexander Koch, Jane Adams, Khan Baykal and Colleen Camp. CBS announced today that the Dome in Chester's Mill will come down and its mysteries revealed during the series finale of Under the Dome on Thursday, Sept. 10. Based on Stephen King's bestselling novel, Under the Dome debuted Monday, June 24, 2013 and has been one of the most-watched shows on television for the past three summers. In the series finale, when the Dome comes down, many questions about its origin and power will be answered, as two groups of residents engage in one final conflict that some won't survive. Here's what Nina Tassler, Chairman, CBS Entertainment, had to say in a statement.
"Two years ago, Under the Dome broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world. Dome's event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of Extant and Zoo.

The ratings for season two of Under the Dome took a big dip but supposedly the TV show is still quite profitable for CBS. Will the numbers continue to drop? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a fourth season? Stay tuned!

Those poor people of Chester's Mill aren't getting out just yet. CBS has renewed their Under the Dome TV show for a third season. It's expected that the new episodes will run next summer and that there will be 13 installments once again.
Under the Dome revolves around residents of Chester's Mill in Maine after a large transparent dome cuts them off from the world. Those on the inside must work to survive with limited resources and rising tension. The large cast includes Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Natalie Martinez, Britt Robertson, Alexander Koch, Nicholas Strong, Colin Ford, Mackenzie Lintz, Jolene Purdy, Aisha Hinds, Dean Norris, Eddie Cahill, and Karla Crome.
Though the ratings for season two dropped quite a bit, Under the Dome remained CBS' top-rated scripted series of the summer and remains profitable for the network, mostly because of deals with Amazon and...

Stephen King’s works have been adapted into a number of features over the years, but few stories of his have been explored in a television medium. Last summer, CBS added to the latter list with an adaptation of the King novel Under The Dome, focusing on the town of Chester’s Mill as it saw itself cut off from the rest of the world by a mysterious clear dome. The show’s second season drew to a close on September 22nd, and while it began with some promise, the season undid itself with inconsistent writing and plot developments that had no connection with each other, among other problems.
The biggest issue of Under the Dome’s second season has been the plot contrivances. Coincidences have driven a lot of the story forward in the season, and the most glaring example has been the Zenith arc.

Last summer, Under the Dome was a big success for CBS. How will season two do in the ratings? Will this Stephen King TV show be renewed for a third season or will it be cancelled instead? Time will tell.

(Cbr) CBS’s summer hit "Under the Dome" returned to San Diego’s Comic-Con International for a second time, upgrading to the bigger Ballroom 20 with a near-capacity crowd of 4,000. Stars Mike Vogel (Barbie), Dean Norris (Big Jim), Rachelle Lefevre (Julia), Alexander Koch (Junior), Colin Ford (Joe) and Eddie Cahill (Sam) joined executive producer Neal Baer on stage for a discussion moderated by "The Insider" host Kevin Frazier. The panel began with a five-minute clip from the seventh episode of Season 2, showing Vogel’s character Barbie as he explores a deep cavern beneath Chester’s Mill, only to fall into it. “Is there anything you want to tell us, Neal?” Frazier asked. “It’s been nice knowing you,” Baer joked, looking at Vogel. Noting that "Under the Dome" seems to have no problem killing off characters, Frazier asked whether viewers will see the departures of more characters this season. “No one is safe under the dome,...

That was a fun panel for "24," even if there was zero news. Now? It's time for "Under the Dome." Last year, the show was a smash hit for CBS. This summer, ratings have been plummeting on a weekly basis. Don't expect anybody to care about those ratings, but expect much concern about The Pig Flu and Yearbook Girl and other recent twists. On to the live-blog. 11:19 a.m. We're kicking things off. Many, many people left the room after "24." And the moderator wants to call this "a runaway summer hit." sigh. 11:19 a.m. Our panel: Neal Baer, Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre (dressed as Starbuck!), Alexander Koch (dressed as... something), Eddie Cahill and Colin Ford. 11:21 a.m. "We know the end of this season, but we won't tell you," teases Neal Baer. They just finished production. Baer promises we're going to see more meanness from Big Jim soon.
