For more than a year, Star Trek fans have been waiting patiently for the return of Strange New Worlds for a resolution to the cliffhanger finale of Season 2. While the third season of the hit show is finally set to premiere sometime this year, CBS Studios and Paramount are wasting no time getting the jump on Season 4.
Earlier this month, it was announced that production on Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is officially underway. The announcement was accompanied by a set photo featuring Ethan Peck (Spock), Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura), and Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike).

The official Star Trek site announced today that production is now underway on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. A first-look image from the set, featuring Ethan Peck (Spock), Celia Rose Gooding (Uhura), and Anson Mount (Christopher Pike), was also shared. You can check that out below.
I’m thrilled that another season of Strange New Worlds is underway, but we still don’t have a release date for the third season! All we know is that it will debut on Paramount+ sometime this year. The first season premiered in May, and the second dropped in June, so we can likely expect a summer release for this one as well. Hopefully, we’ll get a firm date for that soon. Strange New Worlds has been my favourite of the new Trek shows. It’s taken some big swings, with a musical episode and a crossover with the animated Lower Decks series.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already begun to explore relationships that were only hinted at in Star Trek: The Original Series. We saw the unrequited love Nurse Chapel [Majel Barrett Roddenberry] had for Leonard Nimoy's Spock and caught a glimpse of T'Pring [Arlene Martel], who was Spock's prearranged partner. Strange New Worlds took both of those further and gave us full relationships.
After Spock's [Ethan Peck] romance with his fiance T'Pring [Gia Sandhu] fizzled, Spock and Jess Bush's Christine Chapel began a romantic relationship that also didn't last very long. At theSaturn Awards ceremony, Screenrant spoke with Peck who said "there's more explorationa of romantic partnerships" in season three, but he didn't specify whether that was related to his character.

Anticipation is high for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 following season 2's nail-biting cliffhanger. Strange New Worlds season 2's finale, "Hegemony," saw Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise defy Starfleet orders to rescue Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) and the colonists of the planet Parnassus Beta. By the end of Strange New Worlds' thrilling season 2 finale, Lt. Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte), Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), and Lt. Ortegas (Melissa Navia) are captured by the Gorn and Batel has become a host to the terrifying alien species' parasitic eggs.

No official release date has been announced for the Season 3 premiere of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but Nami Melumad, who composes the music for the series, says to expect “surprises." Melumad, while speaking with Screen Rant about her newest project, the Pixar mini-series, Dream Productions, teased season 3 of the series, which currently boasts a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score. Melumad also composed scores for the animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy, and 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
One thing for sure, though, Melumad said fans shouldn’t expect another musical episode like “Subspace Rhapsody” from Season 2. “There’s not another musical episode, but it’s my favorite season,” Melumad said of the forthcoming third installment of Strange New Worlds, which stars Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn.
“I have a very high bar for Star Trek, and I really enjoyed it. There are very different genres in there. There will be surprises.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 is set to span many different genres, and include a few surprises, according to composer Nami Melumad. Strange New Worlds is the 11th show in the Star Trek franchise and debuted on Paramount+ in May 2022. So far, it has run for two seasons and 20 episodes. Starring Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn, the series follows the crew of the Starship Enterprise in the 23rd century, as they explore new worlds. The show received high viewership and critical acclaim, and Strange New Worlds season 3 is due for release in 2025.

Season 3 of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds doesn’t even have a premiere date, but per Trek Central via Production Weekly, Season 4 of the show, starring Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, is reportedly already in pre-production. The fourth season was confirmed in April 2024. The finale of the second season of the series, set on the U.S.S. Enterprise, aired in August 2023.
Production Weekly confirmed that pre-production on Strange New Worlds has begun, but that generally means that the crew and cast are getting ready to start filming, but have not begun yet. The publication stated that work on the fourth season of the Paramount+ Trek series will happen between the first quarter of 2025 to July 2025. However, those dates could change as they are only placeholders.
In September 2024, Paul Wesley, who plays James T. Kirk in Strange New Worlds, said the series would start shooting its fourth season soon.

The USS Enterprise-d of Star Trek: The Next Generation was missing one element that every other Starship Enterprise has had. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his Enterprise crew, Tng ushered in a new golden era of Star Trek that lasted throughout the 1990s. With crew members like Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) and Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner), the crew of Captain Picard's Enterprise became almost as popular as that of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner).
In both Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation, each main character had a specific role to play on their Starship Enterprise. Both ships, for example, had Chief Medical Officers and Chief Engineers who were part of the main cast. But while the Enterprise of Tos had a dedicated helmsman in Lt. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has yet to introduce the iconic Star Trek: The Original Series character, Hikaru Suku, who could be the perfect rival for Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia). As a prequel to Tos, Strange New Worlds has introduced updated versions of beloved characters alongside some great new faces. From Celia Rose Gooding's Lt. Nyota Uhura to Christina Chong's Lt. LA'an Noonien-Singh, Strange New Worlds has done an excellent job casting Star Trek characters both old and new.
While several characters from Star Trek: The Original Series have already appeared on Strange New Worlds, a couple of the biggest names have yet to debut. Lt. The layers of trust in Christopher Pike and Spock's Star Trek: Strange New Worlds dynamic go deep.
Per TrekMovie.com, Anson Mount and Ethan Peck appeared at the St: NJ Trek to New Jersey convention earlier this month, where they discussed Strange New Worlds' genre versatility and how they continue to develop Pike and Spock's bond aboard the USS Enterprise. The way Peck saw it, "I think that my version of Spock is learning to be more human and exploring his humanness. And I see Pike to Spock as a sort of Uncle figure /older brother figure; someone who teaches him about humanness and human ideals, what it is to be noble, and have integrity."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is finally making Star Trek: Enterprise more important. Originally airing from 2001 to 2005, Star Trek: Enterprise attempted to beat franchise fatigue with a prequel series set earlier in the Star Trek timeline. Star Trek: Enterprise starred Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer in command of the previously unknown Nx-01 Enterprise in the 2150s. Archer was joined by new characters in crew positions that were already familiar to Star Trek fans, like Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) handling communications, Chief Engineer Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), and Ensign Travis Mayweather (Anthony Montgomery) at the helm.
Although Star Trek: Enterprise followed a familiar format, Enterprise's awkward position as a Star Trek prequel meant it had a hard time fitting into Star Trek's shared universe organically. Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager benefited from a shared timeline, Star Trek character crossovers,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds gave Star Trek fans a gem when the series cast Melissa Navia as pilot Lt. Erica Ortegas. Fun, outspoken, and hilariously confident at her ability to fly a starship, Ortegas is a breath of fresh air on the bridge of the Enterprise. She plays off of Captain Christopher Pike [Anson Mount] to the point where the two seem more like brother and sister than captain and subordinate. And she's doing the entire series a favor, something Star Trek: The Original Series could have used when it debuted in 1966.
The first pilot of Star Trek: The Original Series included Majel Roddenberry as Number One, but the network wasn't ready for a female lead, and they didn't think the audience would be ready for a woman as the second in command. So that part was tossed, and Spock [Leonard Nimoy] become Captain Kirk's [William Shatner] second in command.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds can never repeat a mistake made by Star Trek: The Original Series. Strange New Worlds is a prequel to Tos, with the voyages of Captain Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) Starship Enterprise taking place about 5-6 years before Captain James T. Kirk's (William Shatner) in Star Trek: The Original Series. Strange New Worlds honors Star Trek's classic format with episodic episodes involving a new planet and alien problem of the week. However, the Enterprise crew's character development is serialized as they grow, learn, and evolve.
Star Trek: The Original Series' classic season 1 episode, "The Devil in the Dark," has the unfortunate distinction of having no speaking parts for female characters. "The Devil in the Dark" involves the mystery of why a creature called a Horta was killing miners on the planet Janus VI. NBC even noticed the lack of female speaking roles, and...

One of the fun things about many Star Trek series is that they feature ensemble casts, with different episodes focusing on different characters. It's okay if (like me) you're not a huge fan of the Data-centric episodes of The Next Generation, because there are plenty of great Worf ones, too. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds carries on this tradition, but one main cast member has yet to lead an episode.
Lt. Erica Ortegas, portrayed by Melissa Navia, is introduced in the first episode of Strange New Worlds as the helmsman on the U.S.S. Enterprise. As she is listed as a main cast member, you could assume we'd get Ortegas-centric episodes, much like we've gotten episodes focused on Pike, Spock, Number One, Uhura, M'Benga, Chapel, LA'an, and Hemmer. After two seasons, this is not the case.
Aside from a handful of trivia mentioned in dialogue, all we really know about Lt.

Melissa Navia, who plays Lieutenant Erica Ortegas on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, is braver than you think. Lieutenant Ortegas was one of the brand-new characters in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and viewers looked forward to getting to know Melissa Navia's Erica Ortegas through a character-building episode. Unfortunately, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 didn't have an Ortegas-centric episode, so learning more about Ortegas would have to wait until Strange New Worlds season 2. When Strange New Worlds' second season finally aired, however, an episode that fully centered on Erica Ortegas wasn't part of it.
There seemed to be a very good reason for the lack of Lieutenant Ortegas in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, since Melissa Navia's partner passed away in December 2021, not long before filming on Strange New Worlds' second season began. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount discusses a possible retcon of his iconic character's tragic fate.
Per ScreenRant, Mount opened up about the possibility of a return via retcon during a Q & A session alongside fellow stars Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Carol Kane, and Melanie Scrofano. When asked about his character Captain Christopher Pike's future in the series, Mount responded quite carefully, noting, "I have to preface this by saying what we think doesn't really matter. It's not our wheelhouse. Its not our department." Mount added, "But I will say, we have not been with ourselves too specific about where we are in that particular timeline."

Anson Mount recalls recording Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' opening monologue while William Shatner was actually in space. As the Captain of the Starship Enterprise in Strange New Worlds, Mount is the latest to voice over Star Trek's classic opening speech, "Space... the final frontier..." over the show's opening credits. As fate would have it, Mount recorded the monologue on October 13, 2021, the day William Shatner went into orbit aboard Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin Ns-18 space flight.
Speaking to Moovy TV alongside his Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' cast mate, Rebecca Romijn, Anson Mount told the story of recording Star Trek's iconic opening monologue and how he took the time to recognize the serendipity of doing so while William Shatner was in space. Read Mount's quote and watch Moovy TV's interview video hosted by Johan Albrechtsen below:

Anson Mount prefers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to stick with Captain Christopher Pike's established canon instead of deviating from the inevitable tragedy waiting for Pike in Star Trek: The Original Series. Less than a decade after Strange New Worlds, Fleet Captain Pike (Sean Kenney) suffers a horrific accident that leaves him disfigured and trapped in a wheelchair. Pike became aware of his future in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, and Chris was burdened by his existential crisis in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' crossover paid tribute to Enterprise and connected it to the 24th century in a heartfelt and clever way. The crossover honored Captain Jonathan Archer's crew and showed the admiration that Captain Pike and his team have for the earlier Enterprise pioneers. Fans of Star Trek: Enterprise appreciate the acknowledgment of the show's legacy in modern Star Trek.
My favorite parts of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' crossover were the callbacks to Scott Bakula's Star Trek: Enterprise. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, and written by Kathryn Lyn and Bill Wolkoff, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7, "Those Old Scientists" brought Star Trek: Lower Decks' Ensign Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) to the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Strange New Worlds' crossover was a tribute to Star Trek fans, and, surprisingly, a loving ode to Star Trek: Enterprise.

Spock's struggle with his human/Vulcan duality intensifies in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3. Insecurity about not fitting in as a human/Vulcan hybrid continues to plague Spock in the upcoming season. The upcoming season explores Spock's ongoing battle with feeling "not Vulcan enough" among his peers.
The recent clip from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 calls back to a joke made about Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) during the show's second season. After his introduction on The Original Series, Leonard Nimoy's Spock became not only a Star Trek icon, but also one of the most beloved and recognizable science fiction characters of all time.
With a Vulcan father and human mother, Spock often struggled to reconcile his human emotions with his Vulcan upbringing. While Spock's struggle occasionally came up on Tos, Strange New Worlds has leaned even further into Spock's human/Vulcan duality.

The cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises that season 3 will continue to explore strange new genres with each episode - with one exception. Cast members Rebecca Romjin (Una Chin-Riley) and Ethan Peck (Mr. Spock) sat down with Variety along with showrunners and executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers at the recent San Diego Comic Con and teased what plotlines and characters viewers will see in season 3, set to premiere on Paramount+ in 2025. They did confirm, however, that there won't be a follow-up to "Subspace Rhapsody," last-season's groundbreaking musical episode.
Paramount dropped a preview for season 3 of Strange New Worlds at Sdcc, featuring members of the Enterprise crew being changed into Vulcans for an away mission, with disastrous results. It's a plot device that's been featured in Trek lore before, but Strange New Worlds provides a unique take, complete with a rock anthem in the episode soundtrack.
