Sky Max’s “A League of Their Own” is trading its usual studio setting for a high-octane rally, pitting some familiar faces against each other in a race from London to Turin. Think less “Amazing Race” and more “Wacky Races,” but with considerably more British banter. Jill Scott, Maisie Adam, Micah Richards, Tom Davis, and Jamie […]

Raquel Welch and Saturday Night Live weren’t a match made in comedy heaven. The actress was assigned a “babysitter” to keep her out of Lorne Michaels’ hair when she hosted in 1976, according to Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live. Welch was attempting to make the transition from 1960s sex symbol to Vegas-style dynamo. What could SNL do with a talent like this?
Welch had ideas, like this bizarro, high-kickin’ musical number. SNL viewers must have felt like they were watching a hybrid of a Donny and Marie variety show and a late-night Skinemax movie.
Of course, SNL writers had their own pitches, mostly centered on her cleavage. Chevy Chase had a brilliant idea — every time Welch was on-screen, he wanted the camera to slowly drift from her face to her breasts. Even funnier (to Chase): No one would tell Welch this was happening, though she...

California’s film and television tax incentive program is potentially primed for a major boost.
Two bills introduced on Wednesday are set to diversify the kind of productions that can qualify for California’s film and television tax credit program, though details have not yet been ironed out. The legislation, designed to augment California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposed increase to the state’s entertainment tax incentives cap, is on track to adopt “a formula that is competitive with those states and countries that are luring our jobs away,” said Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur, who co-introduced the bills alongside Senator Ben Allen and Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, all Democrats.
Stakeholders in the film and television tax credit program are about to begin negotiations on the fine print of the bills. As of this moment the intention with Sb 630 and Ab 1138 is to “modernize the program components to make sure that California...

We’re celebrating 50 years of “Saturday Night Live“! All this week, we’re digging into the late-night comedy institution with new stories, including lists, essays, interviews, and more.
It’s certainly a familiar scene by now, one we’ve all become quite accustom to over the last half century: There’s Lorne Michaels, the famed producer of a televised sketch comedy show airing on NBC. There’s a cast of ever-changing talented performers. At this particular point in time, Jim Downey is the head writer. Al Franken, Tom Davis, Jack Handey, and Alan Zweibel are all on the writing staff. There’s a live audience. There’s a musical guest. There’s the familiar parody newscast. On this particular night, Steve Martin is a guest, as he often is to this very day. Watching a clip on YouTube from this particular night from the mid-’80s, Steve Martin opens the...

For the last several decades, Saturday Night Live has been faced with questions of its future. While so many people claim not to watch or call it unfunny, everyone still talks about it and sketches still go viral. Some feel the show has run its course, the sketches need work, or members of the cast need to go. Nothing ever comes of it because Saturday Night Live is engrained as part of the fabric of late-night television that no one really ever expects to end. But there’s one point in time when Saturday Night Live almost did get canceled, and arguably should have been. The show was hanging by a thread, and instead of a complete cast shake-up saving the show, it led to a year that has become known as the “weird season.”

2025 may be a month old already, but in the world of TV the year is still incredibly young. And so even though we’re already eyes-deep in Severance Season 2 and the second series of Silo on Apple TV+, thwipping all over the place for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Disney+, and have comfortably binged American Primeval and Harlan Coben’s Missing You on Netflix, a veritable streaming smorgasbord still lies ahead of us over the next eleven months or so.
From Andor to Zero Day, The Last Of Us to Stranger Things, and Alan Partridge to Wonder Man to Doctor Who, there is no shortage of returning favourites, fresh franchise offerings, original programming, weekly droppers and binge-ready shows in store for us before the year is through. So whether you’re chomping at the bit for Sally Wainwright’s Happy Valley follow-up, have a date to make with Adam Brody...

Actor and comedian Damon Wayans has revealed how he purposely got fired from Saturday Night Live. Wayans got his start on the live comedy sketch show, and recently spoke with Variety about being fired from the show during Season 11. In the new Peacock docuseries, SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, Wayans revealed that former SNL star Eddie Murphy, who Wayans had worked with just two years prior in the movie Beverly Hills Cop, offered the comedian advice after he joined the show's cast in 1985:
Eddie’s advice to me was, ‘Write your own sketches. Otherwise they’re going to give you some Black people sh*t to do, and you ain’t gon’ like it.
This advice would prove sound, as Wayans found himself written into other sketches, often cast in stereotypical or offensive roles. The comedian grew frustrated as his ideas were repeatedly scrapped or "cut for time" by the writers and producers,...

Damon Wayans has revealed how he “purposely” got himself fired from “Saturday Night Live” by going off script.
Wayans was a cast member for Season 11 of the sketch comedy series, which has been deemed “the weird year,” as it marked Lorne Michaels’ return after a brief hiatus. Instead of adding up-and-comers from the comedy clubs, Michaels decided to hire an all-new cast of already-established stars. With poor reviews and low ratings, the series was on the verge of being canceled.
Wayans explained in the new Peacock docuseries “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night” that he was not nervous about auditioning for the show, and that he had a handful of characters he had been working on. “I felt like I was born to be on ‘Saturday Night Live,'” he said.

The latest trailer for Hulu’s A Thousand Blows boxing drama has The Crown star Erin Doherty as Mary Carr trading barbs outside the ring with feared bare knuckle pugilist Sugar Goodson, played by Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham, to grow her criminal empire.
“Watch me kill him,” a menacing Goodson, the self-declared emperor of London’s East End boxing world, tells Carr, who introduces herself as Queen of an all-female criminal gang known as the Forty Elephants. “Can’t happen,” she defiantly replies, as Carr looks to exploit the talents of Kirby, a Jamaican boxer played by Hezekiah Moscow, who challenges Goodson for survival, and dominance, in the illegal boxing ring.
The result is three lives colliding for control of the criminal underbelly of Victorian London’s East End. A Thousand Blows, based on real-life figures and stories, is produced by The Story Collective in a co-production with Matriarch Productions...

“The show must go on” is about as close to showbiz law as you can get, but that hasn’t stopped some Saturday Night Live performers from refusing to take the stage. Take Ruth Gordon, the 80-year-old host who said “No way!” to an Al Franken and Tom Davis sketch in which she’d keel over dead halfway through. Which, understandable.
Here are five other SNL cast members and guests who flat-out refused to participate in show sketches…
1 John Belushi
In the movie Saturday Night, Dan Aykroyd reluctantly acts in a sketch as a “cutie pie” getting catcalled by female construction workers. Aykroyd played the beefcake in the sketch alongside Lily Tomlin, but he wasn’t the first choice.
Writers Rosie Shuster and Anne Beatts wrote the role for Belushi, who gave the part a big thumbs-down since he was self-conscious about tiny shorts that would show off his weight.

When Jean Smart hosted the season premiere of Saturday Night Live this year at the age of 73, she briefly became one of the five oldest hosts in the show’s long history. Let’s hope Smart enjoyed it while she could because another comedian recently knocked her off the list, meaning an astonishing five people older than 73 have anchored 90 minutes of live comedy on a Saturday night.

2024 was a packed year for several actors working in Hollywood, whether they are continuously rising stars or already well-established names in the industry. The year had plenty of noteworthy character-driven dramas, animated features, chaotic comedies, and big-budget blockbusters to keep audiences entertained. More importantly, these actors proved their capability of playing two different types of characters.
For example, multiple actors from the enthralling and visually stunning Dune: Part Two, like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Austin Butler, also appeared in acclaimed and award-worthy dramas in the same year. They are just a few of many actors who stole the show in 2024 with their commanding screen presence and shockingly good versatility. From newcomers like Cailee Spaeny to big-name stars like Chris Hemsworth, 2024 was a spectacular year for these particular performers.

Hezekiah Moscow and Alec Munroe, best friends on the run from Jamaica, find themselves thrust into the criminal underbelly of London’s thriving bare-knuckle boxing scene.

2024 has been a year packed with great cinema from all different genres. Some of the years biggest hits have also been the most financially successful, like Dune: Part Two, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Deadpool & Wolverine. However, unfortunately, many other great films have fallen by the popularity wayside.
Every year brings a number of films that dont live up to financial or critical expectations, but there are also a lot of films that simply dont spark huge love from audiences. These films are absolutely not failures; they are completely underrated and deserve a second look.

Saturday Night Live is one of the longest-running TV shows of all time, but its premiere episode was filled with production problems that should have doomed the series from the start. And this year, Jason Reitman tells the story of that tumultuous and chaotic night with Saturday Night.

A praiseworthy score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes is reason enough to bring back a second season of the British black comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? Written by and starring Daisy Cooper and Selin Hizli, the show is a beautifully dark concoction of betrayal, female friendship, family and unfiltered honesty. Cooper and Hizli met at drama school, although their friendship didn't get off to the best start. Hizli told The Independent that Cooper compared her to Lily Allen for her arrogance. Evidently, the two got over their differences, and TV is all the better for it.
It's hard to think of much that could've been added (or taken away) from their series to make it any better. The laughs were in the right place, the twists took everyone by surprise and the darker moments left viewers a little creeped-out. Season 2 is due to come out next year with, hopefully, the same...

The A Thousand Blows trailer has officially been released. The Hulu show will star the Forty Elephants, a group of women who turn to shoplifting to survive and thrive in England from the 1800s through the 1950s. While they will be featured heavily, the show will also reveal Hezekiah Moscow (Malachi Kirby) and Alec Munroe (Francis Lovehall), who are two Jamaican immigrants who are introduced to boxer Sugar Goodson (Stephen Graham). The show is led by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
The trailer showcases the first look at a crime drama, but there are some elements that the show fails to reveal in earnest. Check it out below:
Rather than focusing on the criminal underground, the trailer showcases the reality of life as a boxer in a heavy period piece. It does not reveal the Forty Elephants, though it does feature women hinting at the presence of a dangerous criminal underground.

Plot: In the ninety minutes before the live airing of the first episode of Saturday Night Live, a young Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle) desperately tries to keep NBC from pulling the plug while dealing with a cast, writers and crew in open rebellion.
Review: Comedy would be very different nowadays if not for Saturday Night Live‘s impact. Most noteworthy comedy film stars of the last four decades emerged from their ranks, and nearly fifty years since its premiere, it remains as vital as ever. Yet, the making of the show itself had become an almost mythological tale, with it a known fact that the young Lorne Michaels had to overcome overwhelming odds to make the show in the first place.
What Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night does is that it distills most of the big challenges Michaels had to overcome into one ninety-minute period. It’s a conceit that...

In 2008, with two lauded features already under his belt (“Thank You for Smoking” and “Juno”), Jason Reitman took a break from one of his professional dreams (be a filmmaker) to fulfill another (be a writer on “Saturday Night Live”). For one week, the writer/director joined the crew of the venerated live sketch comedy show (it was the Ashton Kutcher-hosted episode), an experience he likens to joining the Los Angeles Lakers for a game.
Like most comedy wonks, Reitman had grown up revering “Saturday Night Live,” an affection he channels for his latest, “Saturday Night,” which he also wrote with Gil Kenan. Set on October 11, 1975, the film follows the wild, rag-tag original cast and crew as they attempt to launch the very first episode of the NBC series.
