Actor Eric Bana (Deliver Us from Evil) has joined the cast of Netflix’s upcoming survival thriller Apex, described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs, Deadline reports today.
Bana joins previously announced stars Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton (Carry-On).
Written by Jeremy Robbins (“The Purge” television series), Apex “follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.” Robbins’ spec script was selected as part of 2021’s The Black List, an annual buzzy compendium of the year’s most-liked unproduced Hollywood screenplays.
The spec script’s logline gives a better idea of the Silence of the Lambs comparison: “When an adrenaline junkie sets out to conquer a menacing river, she discovers that nature isn’t the only thing out for blood.” It’s the type of premise that feels designed to get the adrenaline pumping.

Back in July, it was announced that Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) was signing on to star in a survival thriller called Apex for the Netflix streaming service, with Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband) on board to direct the film from a screenplay by Jeremy Robbins, who earned writing credits on many episodes of the TV series The Purge (set in the world of the Blumhouse film franchise). Now, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Theron is being joined in the cast by Taron Egerton, whose credits include Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and Rocketman.
A genre movie that has been described as “Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs,” Apex will see Theron taking on the role of a rock climber and adrenaline junkie who finds out that nature isn’t the only dangerous element out to get her when she sets out on an expedition in the wild.

Charlize Theron is a one-woman wrecking crew when it comes to conquering challenges on the silver screen, and soon she could face one of her most formidable foes ever in Apex, a high-profile thriller destined to scale the Netflix charts. Theron is in final negotiations to lead Apex, a genre thriller, with Baltasar Kormákur negotiating to direct from a script by Jeremy Robbins. Plot details are scarce, though Deadline says Apex is like Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs, with the story following a rock climber who finds herself getting hunted in the wild. The title is a play on an apex being the top or highest part of something (like a cliff) and a particularly dangerous predator in the wild. The more you know!
In addition to her starring role, Theron will executive produce Apex alongside Dawn Olmstead, Beth Kono, and Aj Dix through their newly minted media outlet.

Netflix has landed rights to the female-driven genre thriller Apex, described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs, Deadline reports today.
Apex was penned by “The Purge” writer Jeremy Robbins and selected as part of 2021’s The Black List, an annual buzzy compendium of the year’s most-liked unproduced Hollywood screenplays.

Exclusive: While high-profile packages have been flourishing following the ends of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the spec market also looks to have some pop to it as sources tell Deadline that Netflix has landed the female-driven genre thriller Apex from scribe Jeremy Robbins. Ian Bryce and Chernin Entertainment will produce. Netflix declined comment.
The script is described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs and follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.
The sale comes at an interesting time in a post-strike landscape where studios see a need for new original stories to fill their development slates, and the spec and packaging markets have reaped the rewards. Prior to the WGA strike in May, the market was not as robust as reps cautioned their clients about how hard it is to sell a script with talent attached, let alone a spec on its own.

The Purge Season 2 Episode 3
A saying has reverberated throughout season two of The Purge. What happens on Purge Night, stays on Purge Night. As we've seen throughout the series, that's not exactly true. For Ben and Ryan, what happens on Purge Night has, and can, determine the very course of their lives in the wake of a pair of impulsive, desperate actions undertaken on a night in which all that sort of thing is legal. For everyone else, the axiom holds true, but they're not the ones struggling with the consequences of the decisions made in the heat of the moment.
For Tommy, the reckless decision to go back for a bag of cash ends up getting him a death sentence according to the Nffa justice system.

Perhaps I am in the minority, but I love title cards. When I get some sort of ticking clock announcement, or help in figuring out where we are in a particular time line, I always appreciate it. Perhaps it's lazy storytelling. Perhaps I'm just losing my attention span as I age. Either way, when I get some kind of countdown on screen, it always helps me figure out timing, and as time ticks down on the annual Purge, the tension increases. A ticking clock always seems to work, if there's even remote investment in what's going on.

Here’s the new Viewfinder List, the entertainment industry survey which polls studio executives, producers and creatives for their top 10 short films, commercials and/or music videos. This is similar to The Black List, as the Viewfinder List honors short form content and the directors who made them. The list was created by producer Jeff Schroeder, Aaron Schmidt (Langley Park Pictures) and Patrick Chu (FilmNation). In recent years, some of the shorts have been optioned and some of their directors have gotten jobs — and hey, the attention never hurts. This year’s top vote-getter, Fool’s Day, was directed by Cody Blue Snider, the son of Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider. Here is the website where it is possible to watch the shorts:
