Italy’s Lux Vide, which has been pushing into the U.S. and international markets with high-end shows such as “Medici” and “Leonardo,” recently appointed former Warner Bros. Italy senior exec Barbara Pavone as its chief marketing and sales officer.
As part of her job Pavone, who is attending Mipcom, is dealing with Lux’s international co-productions and partnerships. Not surprisingly, one of her biggest challenges is retaining IP when she negotiates with streamers such as Netflix.
“It’s a privilege to work with global streaming platforms,” says Pavone who recently helped seal Lux’s first deal with a major streamer, details of which are being kept under wraps.
“For Lux it’s a priority to really act as a media company and retain as much as possible [of] the rights,” she notes.
But “with the streamers it’s a constant negotiation: they want them [the rights] all” Pavone adds, proudly pointing out...

Previously, on Smash
My, has it been a week already? Oh, no, it hasn't, it's just Smash moving to its Saturday night death slot.
So we open on some ridiculous shot of a bright light shining down on Ivy as a booming voice calls her name. It's Tom on a microphone, correcting a piece of Ivy's stage movement in “Public Relations”. They've been working on it for the last three days and she is completely over it. Me too. You know what would solve this? Cutting that turkey of a number.
Stage Manager Linda calls for a reset while Tom grabs a Twizzler and heads back to sit with Julia so he can bitch about how being a director isn't as much fun as he thought it was going to be. This man has had several Broadway hits; how can he be so oblivious to their requirements? He complains that...

Asia: XXX (Frontiers)
That title's not triple-x as in porn, it's Roman numerals marking this supergroup's thirtieth anniversary (though I bet the confusion will increase this page's hits). Yup, three decades ago, "Heat of the Moment" was a massive hit. However, critics have tended to dislike Asia, either for dealing in pop rather than the glorious prog-rock of its members' previous bands -- Yes, Elp, and King Crimson -- or (if said critics are on the other side of the great divide) as dinosaurs still too proggy for naysayers in the post-punk era. Not this critic, through; I have always enjoyed John Wetton's voice, layered vocal harmonies, and melodic sense in every context, and never found Geoff Downes's keyboards and catchy songwriting/production the sacrilege that purist proggers did.
While there are some slight production differences from thirty years ago, basically this third studio album since the original lineup (Wetton,...

Season 2 of The Voice may have been a little coaches-centric for my taste, but Tuesday’s two-hour telecast was — and I say this with no sarcasm whatsoever — structured more perfectly than any reality-competition finale I’ve ever seen. Oh, sure, there were a few awkward moments where the Top 4 were painfully grafted onto performances by big-name artists with products or tours to promote — Juliet with Flo Rida? Tony, Jermaine, and Chris relegated to undetectable backup for Hall & Oates? — but their “victory lap” ditties allowed them to bring back fallen comrades in a celebration of the weeks and months of music...

Universal Records added a new artist to their roster Tuesday night (May 8) when Jermaine Paul of Team Blake was named season-two champ during the finale of "The Voice," which also featured some major star power appearances from the likes of Justin Bieber and Flo Rida.
"I just wanted to say thank you for everyone that voted for me," the former Alicia Keys backup singer said on the sparkler-filled stage, before giving credit to his wife, children and parents. "God bless y'all, man. Nobody but Jesus, man, nobody!"
It was a close call, as host Carson Daly revealed just moments before the announcement that only a mere 4 percentage points separated Paul and runner-up Juliet Simms.

So Lando Calrissian is throwing one of his famous dance parties in the carbonite sewers of Cloud City, which I guess is the rough equivalent of a rich Manhattan socialite hosting a chicly unchic party in outer Brooklyn. Stormtroopers are dancing. My boy Lobot is spinning the discs. “Cloud City’s always lookin’ for new talent,” says Calrissian, who is a club promoter in his spare time. “You think you have what it takes?” At that point, Han Solo emerges from the carbonite container and starts dancing. And the song he’s dancing to is called “I’m Han Solo,...

The final trends covered in this brief overview of this year’s pilot season are the new bout of network sitcoms and also the new cable shows that are fighting their way onto your screens.
Sitcoms appear to be following the trend of success stories like Modern Family and New Girl and becoming more single-camera based than traditional multi-camera. Multi-camera sitcoms being the shows recorded in front of audiences on sets a la Friends and Seinfeld, whilst single camera sitcoms are the ones that are shot more like films with plenty of different locations a la Parks and Recreation and Community. This trend doesn’t seem to apply, however, if you’re CBS, the network appears to be enjoying a renaissance of multi-camera sitcoms with the successes of How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory which were both picked up for multiple seasons earlier this year.

Yep, you guys read that right. The beloved cult show “Arrested Development” is going to grace our TV screens once again….but only for a mini season of 10 episodes. Bitter sweet, but it’s something before the film finally hits the big screen in 2013. How do I know all this? It’s all over the Internet. Well, you guys can thank series creator Mitchell Hurwitz who managed to wrangle his whole “Arrested Development” cast during Sunday’s New Yorker Festival and announced the news at the event. While on stage, Hurtwiz announced that he’ll produce another nine or 10 episodes, but each installment would focus on a different Bluth in order to to catch audiences up on the characters’ lives in the five years since the series ended. “Arrested Development” star Jason Bateman confirmed the news by tweeting the following: It’s true. We will do 10 episodes and the movie.
