There’s been a lot of heat around London’s new Romeo & Juliet, understandably so given its pairing of director Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal, A Doll’s House), known for his radical remodeling of classics, usually around A-list actors, with young global superstar Tom Holland. The latter is returning to the stage for the first time since Billy Elliot: The Musical at the very start of his career, his name causing tickets to sell out in just two hours.
It’s ironic, then, that one thing this production itself lacks is heat — romantic, dramatic, tragic heat. There is much to commend, but it suffers from a single, strategic mistake on the director’s part, to mute the action, quite literally, since much of it is played in whispers and mumbles; even miked, at times the actors are barely audible. The result is that this tale of violent family rivalry and courageous...

Tom Holland will tackle the Bard this spring when he plays Romeo in director Jamie Lloyd’s West End production of Romeo & Juliet.
Lloyd and Holland made the announcement this morning. Romeo & Juliet will run at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Saturday, May 11 through Saturday August 3. Additional casting, including Juliet, was not announced, nor whether the production will follow the path of other Lloyd hits – including the pared-down stagings of A Doll’s House starring Jessica Chastain and Betrayal with Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox and Zawe Ashton, to name two – with an eventual move to Broadway.
Holland, though best known for his leading role in the Spider-Man film franchise and, more recently, as the star of the Apple TV+ limited series The Crowded Room, actually got his show business start on the stage, when at age 11 he landed a supporting part in the West End production of Billy Elliot: The Musical.

Jamie Lloyd’s production of Sunset Boulevard will transfer to Broadway in 2024, with Nicole Scherzinger reprising her role as Norma Desmond.
The revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical moves to Broadway from London, where it has been playing since September. Scherzinger will be joined on Broadway by her London co-stars: Tom Francis as Joe Gillis, Grace Hodgett-Young as Betty Schaefer and David Thaxton as Max Von Mayerling.
Exact dates and a theater for the Broadway run have not yet been announced. The London run is scheduled to end Jan. 6.
This will mark the Broadway debut for Scherzinger, who was formerly a member of the pop group The Pussycat Dolls. She previously starred in Lloyd Webber’s Cats on the West End and has made appearances as a judge on shows such as X Factor and The Masked Singer.

The Lotus and 3 Marys Entertainment production directed by Nicola Abbatangelo will be set in 1920s New York. Shot and sung in English, the film boasts an international cast: Belorussian actress Caterina Shulha (currently touring cinemas in Into the Labyrinth), England’s George Blagden, Scottish actor Kevin Guthrie (Sunset Song), Ryan Reid, Nathan Amzi and Italy’s Paolo Calabresi, Marina Rocco, Carla Signoris, Stefano Fresi and Edoardo Pesce (the winner of the Best Supporting Actor David di Donatello award for Dogman). British actor George Blagden, who played Louis Xiv in period drama “Versailles,” has been cast opposite Belarussian actress and model Caterina Shulha (“Hotel Gagarin”) in “The Land of Dreams,” an English-language movie musical set in 1920s New York being produced by Italy’s Leone Film Group for the international market.
Shooting has just started at Bulgaria’s Nu Boyana Film Studios on the ambitious and unusual pic being directed by Italian newcomer Nicola Abbatangelo. Producer Marco Belardi, who heads Leone group’s Lotus Production shingle, decided to take a gamble on the project after being impressed by a 20-minute short directed by Abbatangelo, which the feature will expand on.
Until a few years ago, musicals did not get much traction in Italy, but that changed with Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land,” which opened the 2016 Venice Film Festival and proved a hit for Leone, its Italian distributor.

The Voice coach Ricky Wilson has proved that he took his role seriously by hitting the studio with one of his acts.
Wilson tweeted a photograph of 16-year-old Beth McCarthy in a recording studio yesterday (May 29), adding the caption: "In the studio with this one this afternoon."
McCarthy retweeted the picture and replied: "Team Ricky for life not just for Christmas. X"
The singer, who joined Wilson's team after a performance of 'Sexy And I Know It' in her blind audition, failed to get through to the live shows and was eliminated at the Knockout stage of the competition.
The pair also spent time with another of Wilson's team members, Nathan Amzi, who was eliminated from the competition after being up against eventual finalist Christina Marie in the Battle Rounds.
Tweeting two pictures of the duo yesterday, McCarthy wrote: "Myself, @Rickontour and @theamzi are far cooler than you. #green"

We were convinced we'd found a way to predict the results of this weekend's Voice battles - by putting some of the duos head to head to test their knowledge of their mentors - but Team Tom and Team Will ended in a dead heat, and Team Kylie were separated by just a measly half point. In other words, we're not talking particularly convincing results. But hey, maybe Team Ricky will give us some clearer answers? We called up Nathan Amzi and Christina Marie, so read on to find out who knows more about Ricky - and then what they had to say about tonight's head to head...
Fighting Talk - we're going to test you on your knowledge of Ricky.
Nathan: "Okay! Yeah!"
Christina: "Oh my goodness, this is going to be so bad! Okay..."

The Voice coaches will invite their famous friends along to help their contestants on this weekend's episode.
As the legendary battle round begins, each Voice coach will have a guest mentor who can help them prepare their acts for the fight.
will.i.am has cheated slightly by inviting along two guests - last year's contestant Leah McFall, who recently debuted the video for 'No Ordinary Love', as well as Voice stalwart Dante Santiago.
The Team Will acts that will be going head to head this weekend are Anna McLuckie and Jessica Steele, Callum Crowley and Tom Barnwell, and Sarah Eden-Winn and Jermain Jackman.
Sir Tom Jones has made the perhaps surprising decision to invite Tinie Tempah along to meet his acts, but the pair seem to be deep in conversation in this picture.
