Netflix is parting ways with two of its freshman dramas.
The streaming service canceled Partner Track and The Imperfects.
Partner Track launched on August 26 but failed to garner much traction.
The series followed Ingrid Yun (Arden Cho), a 1st generation Korean American and the first lawyer in her family, who experiences the trials and tribulations of excelling at the prestigious (but old school) law firm, Parsons Valentine.
Bradley Gibson (Power Book II: Ghost), Alexandra Turshen (Ray Donovan), Dominic Sherwood (Shadowhunters), and Rob Heaps (Good Girls) also starred.
The cast was rounded out by Nolan Gerard Funk (The Flight Attendant), Matthew Rauch (Banshee), and Roby Attal (The Haunting of Bly Manor).
Unfortunately, the series ended on a big cliffhanger, meaning it joins the ranks of Netflix's other one-and-done series that failed to get conclusions.

Partner Track season 2 is not moving forward at Netflix. Based on the 2013 novel by Helen Wan, Partner Track centered around Ingrid Yun, played by Teen Wolf alum Arden Cho, a rising legal star who finds herself willing to do whatever it takes to make partner at her esteemed Manhattan law firm. With that setup, the legal drama explores what people of color and women in particular experience as they attempt to reach for that big and often elusive promotion. The series, which also stars Bradley Gibson, Alexandra Turshen, and Dominic Sherwood, debuted back in August.
Now, along with the news that Netflix has canceled sci-fi drama The Imperfects, the streamer announces that Partner Track season 2 will not be happening. The news comes as a bit of a surprise, given previous comments from Netflix executive Jinny Howe. Shortly after the Partner Track premiered, Howe - who is the Head of Drama...

Two Netflix shows that debuted this summer, “Partner Track” and “The Imperfects,” won’t be picked up for a second season, TheWrap confirmed Tuesday.
“Partner Track,” based on Helen Wan’s 2013 novel “The Partner Track,” starred Arden Cho, who played Ingrid Yun, a motivated young lawyer who is climbing the ladder to becoming a partner at a prestigious law firm. During her journey, the show highlights the challenges women of color — specifically Asian American women — face in white, male-dominated industries.

Netflix has canceled Partner Track after one season, adding to the sadly large pile of shows the streamer has axed after just one go. The cancellation news comes after the legal drama ended on a big cliffhanger for its leading lady, Arden Cho‘s Ingrid Yun, one of the few Asian women leading a TV series at a major streamer. The romantic drama tracked Ingrid, an idealistic lawyer struggling with her moral compass as she fights to climb the partner track at the upscale New York City law firm of Parsons Valentine & Hunt. Ingrid and her legal pals, Rachel Friedman (Alexandra Turshen) and Tyler Robinson (Bradley Gibson), were the core of the series. After the series dropped its 10-episode debut season on August 26, the trio of friends became beloved by viewers. “I feel like we’re forming one of those iconic television friendships,” Gibson told TV Insider in a September interview about the series.

The most frustrating turn in any romantic comedy is when the leading lady and/or man becomes a jerk. It’s a crucial moment — necessary, even — but it’s always the hump you have to endure in order to get to the part where everyone learns their lesson, embraces their truth, and kisses their hot crush to the triumphant swell of an impossibly catchy pop song that will nonetheless fade from memory by the time the credits roll. Without that annoying blip of tension, that payoff won’t be half as sweet — or, truth be told, half as earned.
Such is the conundrum facing “Partner Track,” Netflix’s frothy new comedy based on Helen Wan’s novel about lawyers fighting tooth and nail to become partner, if only they could stop getting distracted by each other. Ingrid (Arden Cho) is the firm’s determined golden girl, especially because she’s...

Netflix’s upcoming romantic dramedy series “Partner Track,” set at a Manhattan-based white-shoe law firm, has been described as “Sex and the City” meets “Suits,” but for star Arden Cho the series is unlike any other that she’s seen on television. That’s because the story centers on a first-generation Korean American merger and acquisitions lawyer, Ingrid Yun (Cho), as she navigates everything from forbidden romance to microaggressions at the male-dominated company — something Cho said is hard to come by in shows about single 20-something women in New York City.
“Ingrid just sticks out to begin with,” Cho told TheWrap. “She is an Asian American woman, and there is some diversity at the firm but it’s very clearly noted. You’ve just got, ‘Oh, we’ve got a couple of people of color. Let’s stick them together, and that’s your diversity,‘ which is something we see happening in the world.

About five years ago, Arden Cho started saying no to scripts. It began when her role as Kira Yukimura, the only woman of color in the main cast of MTV’s hit series Teen Wolf, was abruptly cut from the final season in 2016. She decided to hold out for the right next project — which meant finding characters that, as a Korean American who grew up in Texas, she thought she would never see. “I deserve, at least once in my life, to tell a story that girls can watch and be inspired by,” she tells THR. Her private “no’s” found a public stage this May, when she turned down Teen Wolf‘s film reboot; reports of the salary she was offered (apparently a fee less than half what her white co-stars earn) surfaced, and the story went viral. For a show perhaps best known for its short shorts and tennis courts, “Red Oaks” has always been about a race: It’s the pursuit of one’s dream vs. the crushing constrictions of time. It’s those fleeting years of adolescence, spent getting high and thinking higher vs. the life’s practicalities, the expectations of parents, and the varying opportunities dictated by privilege. It’s David vs. Goliath, and David’s got a shot at this thing.
This race, though, has largely been run. Entering its final season, “Red Oaks” is flying past the finish line, and viewers are treated to a leisurely cool down, waiting for the results even if they can probably guess ‘em. This extended epilogue isn’t particularly urgent, nor hysterically funny. Tribeca Enterprises announced on Wednesday that to supplement its acclaimed annual film festival, this fall it would launch the Tribeca TV Festival, to run Sept. 22 through 24 at Cinepolis in New York City and feature numerous premieres and panel Q&As.

As of late, every major fest has included some degree of television in its programming. But Tribeca is demonstrating a new level of commitment to episodic content with Tribeca TV, an entire festival dedicated to the small screen (to use an increasingly antiquated term).
Running September 22-24 in New York, Tribeca TV will feature the world premieres of the upcoming new series “At Home with Amy Sedaris,” as well as “Designated Survivor” Season 2 and “Red Oaks” Season 3. Also getting special previews are Season 2 of the Emmy-nominated “Better Things,” the fourth season of “Gotham,” the upcoming Sundance TV miniseries “Liar,” and NBC’s revival of classic sitcom “Will & Grace.”

As Red Oaks season 2 arrives on Amazon Prime Video, we chatted to lead Craig Roberts about his character, directing and more…
What Netflix’s Stranger Things is to 80s sci-fi horror, Amazon’s Red Oaks is to 80s coming-of-age romantic comedy. Without slipping into parody, both are a continuation of a familiar style of storytelling featuring characters and themes we know and love. If Stranger Things takes its cues from Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter, Red Oaks has made itself the inheritor of John Hughes, Rob Reiner and Amy Heckerling. (In a neat connection, Heckerling has directed multiple episodes of Red Oaks, which also stars Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey, stitching it firmly into that continuity.)

There are few story premises so perfect in their simplicity as "what do we do with this dead body?" It's a foundation for countless different outcomes. Do you call the cops? Do you hide the evidence? Do you try to frame someone else? Do you show it off? Do you pretend it never happened? Those and many more questions are the driving force behind the new indie thriller Body. It's out on Dgitial HD today and it's our pleasure to premiere a clip from the movie. But not just any clip! This is the moment when things start to really go south for three unlucky ladies (played by Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen, Lauren Molina). But before we get to the clip, here's the official synopsis. "A darkly funny and twisted journey taking place entirely on one...

Merry Christmas Eve, weirdos! The folks over at Oscilloscope have let us open a present early --- an exclusive clip from the horror film, Body. The holiday-themed flick has been playing select theatres for a few weeks, and is due to premiere on VOD on December 29th.Having seen the film at the 2015 Stanley Film Festival, I can attest that there are some squirmy scenes and a very icky-and-hilarious moment with genre stalwart Larry Fessenden, who plays the hapless caretaker. What starts off as a normal night becomes a pretty messed up situation when some co-eds (played by Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen, and Lauren Molina) get into much more trouble than they anticipated. Here's the synopsis:a darkly funny and twisted journey taking place entirely on...

The holidays are all about joy and togetherness and goodwill toward man and all of that, but sometimes you need a break from all that sweetness. Sometimes, you need a nasty little thriller like Body to cut through all that holiday cheer. Body
Written & Directed by Dan Berk & Robert Olsen
USA, 2015
Body is a taught psychological-thriller that doesn’t so much re-invent the ‘one crazy night’ genre so much as skew it for modern sensibilities. There aren’t any scares here, but Dan Berk and Robert Olsen deliver a treatise on self-absorption that is horrifying, nonetheless. It’s rare to find this level of rich subtext in such a modest genre picture. Lively and entertaining, Body is a nice change of pace if you’re looking for something slightly more sinister this holiday season.
It’s Christmas Eve, and Mel (Lauren Molina), Holly (Helen Rogers), and Cali (Alexandra Turshen) are back home from school and bored out of their minds. They’ve tortured their younger brother, titillated old boyfriends, and tormented their dorky parents. Now it’s time for some real fun! Cali has a rich uncle who lives out in the ‘burbs.

Three college-age women on holiday break decide to abandon a quiet evening of Scrabble and pot-smoking when party girl Cali (Alexandra Turshen) insist they crash at her rich uncle’s vacant McMansion. There they ring in Christmas Eve with golf cart joyrides and various other liquor-soaked shenanigans, until the suspect Holly (Helen Rogers) discovers they’ve actually broken into a stranger’s home, more specifically that of an Asian family Cali babysat for once upon a time. Before they can leave the scene of their innocent crime, they’re discovered by a groundskeeper (played by horror filmmaker, Larry Fessenden, who, based on his acting resume, loves a good victim role), and an ensuing scuffle leaves him prone and unresponsive at the bottom of the stairs. The story then shifts into a study of group power dynamics when the trio, with Cali as their dominating lead, decides to make the scene look like an attempted rape,...

Body is a thriller about three grown women who break into the mansion where one of them babysits in order to drink all the liquor and party while the family that lives there is on vacation. *full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Oscilloscope Laboratories. **there are major spoilers in this review. Directors/writers: Dan Berk and Robert Olsen. Cast: Helen Rogers, Alexandra Turshen, Lauren Molina and Larry Fessenden. Directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen's Body is set for an upcoming December release. The film involves a girl's night out, that leads to violence. Full of tension and conflict, Body is a decent thriller, which asks a few moral questions. Unfortunately, the mostly amoral trio of female characters are unwilling to make the right decisions. This lack of morality leads to bigger and bigger problems. And, Body has some connections with recent news stories, at American universities. Here, feminist delusions over rape culture and false rape accusations seep into the film's narrative. Relevant and controversial, Body is an entertaining watch, with the film asking viewers how they would act. Parties often...

If any man alive has the right to argue for TV's recent ascension over movies, it would be David Chase. But "The Sopranos" creator has never seen it that way, telling me a few years ago that the only obvious advantage he thinks TV has is that "there’s more of it, and you can get into more detail. I guess maybe this is what it comes down to: in a television show, you can spend a lot of money on very little small things about people.” That ability to expand stories and drill down on characters has always been TV's greatest strength, but it's been particularly obvious with the migration of indie filmmakers to TV over the last few years. Shows like "Transparent," "Girls," "Togetherness," and Hulu's new "Casual" could have easily been made into 90-minute movies that played the festival circuit; instead, we get longer versions that really...

Not all horror movies have ghosts or zombies or monsters or masked murderers hacking up teenagers. Sometimes, horror movies just find regular people in terrible circumstances and watch as things heat up, like ants put under a magnifying glass in the sun. That’s the case in Body, the feature debut from the writing/directing team of Dan Berk and Robert Olsen and a solid four character thriller and a welcome surprise this year.
Three friends, Holly (Helen Rogers), Mel (Lauren Molina) and Cali (Alexandra Turshen) are hanging out on Christmas Eve. They’ve eaten too much, they’ve smoked a little weed and now they’ve gotten bored. Cali suggests they go over to her rich uncle’s house, which is empty for the holidays. They head over and drink some more and goof around a little. Then a man (Larry Fessenden) shows up and surprises them. There is an accident.

Body sees three girlfriends head out for a wild night during the Christmas holidays, but their jaunt is about to turn deadly. Cali suggests they crash her rich uncle’s mansion since he’s out of town and soon they’re partying the night away. However there’s something Cali hasn’t told her BFFs – namely that they’ve actually jut broken into the place without permission! Soon their part is rumbled by the mansion’s groundskeeper (played by modern horror cinemas equivalent of Christopher Lee, one Mr. Larry Fessenden) who takes a dive down the stairs at the hands of one of the girls. Soon the fear of possible reprisals finds the terrified trio embarking on a course of action from which there is no return.

In two weeks, vampires, cannibals, Halloween frights and more will grace the screen at the Muvico Theater in Rosemont, Illinois for Bruce Cambell's Horror Film Festival. Now a telekinetic kid and and an apocalypse have joined the killer lineup, as both June and JeruZalem will make their U.S. premieres at the festival.
Press Release: "Chicago, Illinois (August 6, 2015) – The second annual Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival presented by Wizard World, running August 20 – 23 at the Muvico Theater in Rosemont, Illinois (9701 Bryn Mawr Ave., Rosemont), is proud to announce the addition of two more films to the already bursting schedule.
June, starring Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) and Kennedy Brice (The Walking Dead), tells the story of nine-year-old June (Brice), who has been shuffled in and out of foster homes for years. Though she tries to be good, no matter where she goes a trail of chaos and terror seems to follow.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a smarter, warmer, more honest depiction of human sexuality than this roundrobin of emotion and attraction. I love this movie. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ricky (Michelle Hendley) hates life in her small rural Kentucky town. She’s working in a cafe there only until she hears back from the New York design school she’s applied to; she dreams of having her own line of clothing and already has quite a following on her YouTube channel devoted to fashion. She and her purely platonic best friend Robby (Michael Welch: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1) pass their time hanging out and have teasing conversations about the differences between men and women when it comes to love and sex and relationships.
All totally normal for a couple of young 20somethings.

It is hard to think of a more generic title for a romantic comedy than Boy Meets Girl, although the newest film from writer/director Eric Schaeffer (If Lucy Fell) is much more unique than its limp name implies. The title does not refer to a meeting between two people of different genders, but the merging of gender identities. Protagonist Ricky (Michelle Hendley) was born a man but identifies as a woman. As a child, she dressed up in gowns for Halloween. In high school, she ditched football for fashion blogging and dress designing.
In a time when greater awareness about the transgender community has created much more cultural acceptance, watching Boy Meets Girl feels both liberating and limiting. That liberation comes from Schaeffer’s openness to delve into questions of gender, identity and sexuality, However, familiar plotting, characters and dialogue limit the depth of the drama. Regardless, one can...

We’re going back to the Overlook Hotel! Okay fine, it’s technically one of the three “Overlook Hotels” related to Stephen King’s classic novel, The Shining, but for our money it’s the coolest due largely to the Stanley Film Fest. This year’s fest will be its third incarnation after debuting in 2013. We attended and loved that inaugural weekend, and while we missed last year’s festivities their latest announcement has us excited to return to Estes, Co later this month. The lineup includes twenty feature films consisting of festival favorites (The Final Girls, The Treatment, The Invitation, Deathgasm and We Are Still Here to name a few) and three world premieres (Sun Choke, Some Kind of Hate and the highly intriguing-sounding Director’s Commentary: The Terror of Frankenstein). They’re also screening five older films including the likes of David Cronenberg’s Shivers, Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and the eternally awesome Re-Animator which...
