One of the most (if not the most) controversial Star Wars stories is proving to be surprisingly popular despite its sudden cancelation. Beginning in June last year, the Star Wars prequel series The Acolyte proved to be another deeply divisive adventure in a galaxy far, far away. But, while the series has now been canceled by Disney, a new report reveals that the cries from fans for The Acolyte Season 2 are louder than anyone would have expected.
According to Parrot Analytics, who study viewing metrics, streaming data, and more, calls for The Acolyte Season 2 are “20.8 times the average,” which they conclude “stands as a compelling candidate for further investment and development.” Despite a slight drop in demand from fans (dipping from a previous high of 22.6 times the average), The Acolyte “remains exceptionally rated within the drama genre at the 99.3rd percentile,” which they believe “indicates a high loyalty and engagement level from a dedicated audience,...

Dafne Keen, who broke out as an 11-year-old child actor in Logan and reprised her role as Laura in last summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine, has signed with UTA.
On the TV side, the Spanish-English star most recently starred in the Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte, which aired from June to July last year. She played the Padawan Jedi Knight Jecki Lon on the series, which was led by Amandla Stenberg and created by Leslye Headland.
Previously, Keen led the BBC One/HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials, playing Lyra Belacqua opposite Ruth Wilson and James McAvoy in the adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novels that ran for three seasons from 2019-22.
Her work on 2017’s Logan earned her acclaim, and for a time there was even talk of a spinoff movie starring her character. While that never happened amid Logan studio 20th Century Fox’s acquisition by Disney,...

Since 2012, with its first theatrical release, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, A24 has been hooking audiences with a distinct style emphasizing unbridled creativity. Many A24 films earn an R-rating, allowing filmmakers to push the boundaries with taboo subjects, steering away from the fear of studio interference if a film isn't seen as particularly palatable for general audiences.
With so many R-rated films, it's hard to narrow down the best of the best, as each A24 film is unique in presentation and structure, even if it's from the same director. From bone-chilling horror movies to gripping dramas, these R-rated A24 flicks exhibit true artistry and an extensive knowledge of the craft of filmmaking that's difficult to achieve.

Marvel’s latest TV offering, ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, hit Disney+ with a thud instead of a bang. We’re talking about Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer turned vigilante, back in action with Charlie Cox slipping into the red suit once more. It’s a gritty reboot of the Netflix series that fans loved, but the numbers? They’re not screaming success. In its first five days, it pulled in 7.5 million views. Decent, sure, but when you stack it against other recent Marvel and Star Wars shows, it’s looking a little weak.
Let’s talk comparisons. ‘Agatha All Along’, that quirky WandaVision spinoff with Kathryn Hahn chewing scenery as the sassy witch Agatha Harkness, racked up 9.3 million views in seven days. That’s nearly 2 million more than ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, even with two extra days to count. Then there’s ‘The Acolyte’, the Star Wars series with lightsabers and lesbian...

Wicked star Cynthia Erivo has joined Karoshi, a ‘corporate action thriller with a samurai twist’. Count us in.
Cynthia Erivo’s movie star powers have reached a new level through the global success of last year’s Wicked. And with that film’s second part due to arrive later this year, Erivo has been decidedly busy both as an actor and on other projects.
This year alone she’s launched a new single, has a new album coming, and she’s playing the Messiah himself in the Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar this summer. She’s also appearing in season two of Poker Face.
That’s quite the year, not least because according to Deadline, Erivo has booked in another leading turn in Lionsgate’s Karoshi, the latest effort (in an increasingly long line) where the studio looks to replicate the success of its John Wick series. Still,...

The story follows Zélie Adebola, a young girl trying to bring magic back to the kingdom of Orïsha after the ruling class, the kosidáns, wiped out the maji, her people who once wielded magic.
Adeyemi spent 18 months and 45 drafts writing the novel, drawing inspiration from books like ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘An Ember in the Ashes,’ West African mythology, and Yoruba culture. She was also influenced by the pain of police violence against Black Americans.

In Suzanne Collins' 2008 dystopian teen novel "The Hunger Games" (which was subsequently adapted into a massively successful film franchise that kicked off in 2012), we're introduced to protagonist Katniss Everdeen, a young woman from the impoverished District 12 of Panem who illegally hunts to keep her family safe as they struggle to prepare for the annual Hunger Games. See, in Panem (a reworked interpretation of North America), a rebellion occurred years before Katniss was even born, and so the all-powerful Capitol flexes its strength every year by assembling 24 children (two from each of Panem's districts) to fight to the death in an arena, televising the event and dubbing it the "Hunger Games." When Katniss, played in the "Hunger Games" movies by Jennifer Lawrence, volunteers as tribute after her younger sister's name is chosen to compete, leaves her home behind and begins training for the Games, she and her fellow District 12 tribute Peeta...

Star Warsisn't exactly a franchise built on love stories. Fans who turn up for every new Star Wars movie and TV show are more likely looking for epic action and tragic character work. Even so, the epic sci-fi franchise has featured multiple love stories over the years, from the surprisingly compelling romance between Han Solo and Leia Organa to the deeply tragic affections between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Duchess Satine Kryze.
Unfortunately, for every Han and Leia, there is another kind of romance that simply doesn't work for viewers. Whether between characters who simply don't belong together or actual incestuous relationships, some Star Wars couples can best be described in a single word: gross.

The Acolyte was not long for this world, as the Star Wars series was canceled at Disney+ after a single season. While that was obviously not the best news for the show's cast and crew, Dafne Keen still sees the positive side of her involvement with the short-lived series.
In The Acolyte, Keen played Jecki Lon, a Jedi Padawan who meets an unfortunate end before the end of the season. Per Screen Rant, Keen commented on the show getting canceled while at the Saturn Awards. While she admitted that it was difficult news for the team to hear, she is nevertheless happy to have been a part of the show's brief run. Pplaying Jecki still gave Keen a chance to play a Jedi on-screen, which was a bucket list item she's now able to tick off while still rather early into her acting career.

Last August, we got word that Lucasfilm/Disney had decided not to movie forward with a second season of The Acolyte despite several major storylines and character arcs being left unresolved by the end of the season 1 finale - including the introduction of Darth Plagueis.
The decision was met with a mixture of indifference and disappointment, but it seemed very clear that a lot of Star Wars fans - and some of the actors involved with the show - were surprised by this development.
Showrunner Leslye Headland was hoping to be able to continue her High Republic era-set tale, and rumor has it that the studio was planning a second season up until fairly recently.
Despite speculation that the negative backlash from many Star Wars fans contributed to the show being canned, reports emerged that The Acolyte was cancelled because it didn't get enough viewers, plain and simple.

Disney has just revealed some new viewing numbers for The Acolyte, which only proves why this Star Wars show should have continued!
One of the bigger TV shows of 2024 was The Acolyte. This Star Wars series had a hook as it was set 150 years before the movies, a time when the Jedi were in full power. However, the conflict between two twins (both played by Amandla Stenberg) could expose the threat of a reborn Sith.
The show did have a rather divisive reaction among critics and Star Wars fans. It seemed for every person praising it, another slammed it as awful and accusations of being “review bombed” by a sadly toxic portion of the fandom.
That said, it was still a surprise when Disney+ canceled the show after one season with the plans for Season 2 clearly there. An explanation came that the show’s viewing numbers didn’t justify its high budget.

It's rare for Disney+ to publicly announce a cancellation, but that's exactly what happened with The Acolyte. Some believe the apparent review-bombing might have factored into Disney's decision, and a new report adds some weight to the theory.
The series, set during The High Republic Era, featured a diverse cast and was criticised by many Star Wars fans for taking what they considered to be major liberties with the franchise's established set of rules. It's impossible to figure out how many of The Acolyte's detractors were trolls and which of them were real fans with legitimate grievances.
Regardless, the decision to scrap the series just got a little bit more confusing with a report from Deadline. The trade has shared statistics from Luminate revealing that The Acolyte was the second-most-watched TV series of 2024 on Disney+ behind only Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Wait, so was the divisive Star Wars series The Acolyte popular after all? The show, which saw a major split between critics and audiences (just the latest example of such a chasm in the beloved franchise) was unceremoniously canceled after just one season back in July last year. But, while reports claimed the cancelation came as a result of low viewership, the latest report from Luminate adds a layer of suspicion to such claims.
According to the report, The Acolyte was not only pretty popular among viewers, it was the second most viewed show of 2024 on Disney+. There were few stories with a more disappointing ending in 2024 than The Acolyte — the Star Wars series that was cancelled after one season despite strong reviews. The show even set up multiple threads to pull on in future seasons, including that of Qimir (Manny Jacinto) and Osha (Amandla Stenberg), as well as learning more about Darth Plagueis the Wise, who was teased in the show for the first time in live-action. There have been many conversations surrounding The Acolyte's cancelation, and while many have said that it was due to the show's "poor viewership," new evidence has come to light that discredits this. A new report from Luminate highlighting the year-end movie and TV report showed that The Acolyte was the second-most-watched show on Disney+, falling short of only Percy Jackson and The Olympians but nearly tripling that of Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

Children of Blood and Bone, the bestselling West African-inspired YA fantasy story from Tomi Adeyemi, is heading to the big screen soon, and its cast just got a whole lot bigger. Variety reports that a slew of new talent has been announced for the movie, which is being directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and the entire Spider-Verse franchise revealed that there are an infinite number of multi-verses, all with their own canon events. Unfortunately, our canon event is for Beyond the Spider-Verse to never hit theaters. The third installment in the Spider-Verse trilogy (which began with 2018's Into the Spider-Verse) was already meant to be released in theaters in early 2024, but was delayed indefinitely by Sony. Reports on the movie's status are conflicting, but one of its stars just gave a sour update.
During an interview with Decider, to promote his new movie, Unstoppable, Jharrel Jerome gave a disappointing update on Beyond the Spider-Verse's production. The actor, who plays the Earth-42 variant of Miles Morales, was asked if he had begun recording his lines for the movie yet. "No, I wish," was his honest response. Though Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse seems on the right track based on recent news, one of the superhero threequel's stars offers a more uncertain take on the film's progress. Miles G. Morales actor Jharrel Jerome provides another frustrating update on the long-gestating animated blockbuster.
Speaking with Decider, Jerome was asked to offer a progress report on Beyond the Spider-Verse and whether he's started voice work on the anticipated project. Jerome relayed that he's yet to begin any work on the third installment in the Spider-Verse film series, with no word regarding when production would start. "No, I wish. We haven’t started up yet. A lot of things being figured out, but good things," he said.

In the world of Star Wars, very few entries have been as iconic as Skeleton Crew, with Andor being a fair enough exception. If anything, the recent television additions to the space opera saga have earned nothing short of some really disappointing reviews from many, with The Acolyte arguably being the perfect example of the same.

But the currently ongoing coming-of-age adventure series seems to be bringing a positive change after the debacle that was left behind by the 2024 series. To say the least, by proudly breaking one of Disney’s most frustrating trends with George Lucas’ sci-fi/fantasy franchise, Skeleton Crew is pretty much serving as the franchise’s savior.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has been gaining quite a bit of fan attention as of late, and the reasons behind it are all too understandable.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse finally gets a new update as one of the stars shares what is currently going on with the Marvel film in 2025. It seemed like great news for the franchise when Star Wars: Skeleton Crew debuted on Disney+ to solid reviews from critics. Given the relatively polarizing reception to The Acolyte, mostly from Star Wars fans, the warm reception to Skeleton Crew felt like a step in the right direction. However, despite an improved critical response, the latest Star Wars series is coming in on the low end of the record books in terms of early viewership.
According to streaming data courtesy of Nielsen, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew registered the lowest viewership of any Star Wars series premiere in its first week, with less than 382 million minutes viewed across its first two episodes. Because of its debut viewership total, Skeleton Crew didn't crack Disney+'s Top 10 Originals, which represents another first for a Star Wars show. It appears that even good reviews haven't motivated fans to rush out and see the latest spinoff.

Following stand-out turns in Netflix's Squid Game and Disney+'s The Acolyte, South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae might be set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to scooper Mttsh, Jung-jae is in talks for an undisclosed MCU role.

Brian Tyree Henry claims that “there’s not going to be a dry eye in the house” when fans finally see the long-awaited Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Tyree has portrayed Miles Morales’ father, Jefferson, in both 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and he will reprise the role for the threequel.
While the third installment in Sony’s animated Spidey saga doesn’t currently have an official release date attached, Henry teases a tear-jerking ending, but it might not be the kind fans will appreciate. In fact, the actor makes it sound like these waterworks won’t be tears of joy that are being shed at the end of Beyond the Spider-Verse. Henry elaborates in a recent podcast appearance, and he even jokes that his schedule is the reason the sequel has been delayed. Henry told Just for Variety host Marc Malkin (below):

Avatar and MCU star Zoe Saldana takes the lead in a divisive action thriller from 2011, which is due to land on Netflix in the new year. Not only does the movie find the Guardians of the Galaxy actor at the forefront, it was co-written and produced by controversial Taken and The Fifth Element filmmaker Luc Besson, and helmed by Transporter 3 and Taken 2 director Olivier Megaton. So, it has quite the action movie pedigree, if not the critical response to back it up.
Co-written and produced by Luc Besson and directed by Olivier Megaton, the action outing is titled Colombiana and stars Zoe Saldaña alongside the likes of Michael Vartan, Cliff Curtis, Lennie James, Callum Blue, and Jordi Mollà. Colombiana is all set to hit Netflix in the new year on January 1, and could make the perfect post-New Year’s Eve viewing. You can check out the official synopsis below.

As we look ahead to the new year, Disney+ is gearing up to release exciting new content for its global audience. We're talking about shows such as Goosebumps: The Vanishing, Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, Ironheart, Daredevil: Born Again and Andor season 2. However, for various reasons, there are some Disney+ shows that won't be returning with additional installments in the new year.
It could be because they were billed as miniseries, meaning that they were designed to conclude after only one season, which wrapped up this year. Another reason for them not returning could be that they won't be finished with the filmmaking process in time to make a 2025 release. There are also some Disney+ shows that won't be back next year because they ended or were canceled this year. Whatever the reason for them not returning, we're definitely going to miss them!

Quaid winds down his fan-favorite five-season run as Lieutenant Bradward Boimler on Star Trek: Lower Decks. Similarly, Jack will also soon wrap his tenure as Hughie Campbell on The Boys, which enters its fifth and final season on Prime Video. With two of his most popular heroic characters in his rearview mirror, Jack Quaid should stay in Star Trek, but this time, as a dastardly villain.

Jack played Marvel in 2012's The Hunger Games opposite Jennifer Lawrence's breakout performance as Katniss Everdeen. The Acolyte divided opinions when it hit Disney+ back in June but the series had become a target of apparent review-bombing weeks before that; certain cast members, meanwhile, were faced with online abuse and trolling.
While the negativity surrounding the show did seem to lessen interest, there's no denying the fact Lucasfilm failed to deliver a story that hooked fans and non-fans alike.
With that in mind, the news of The Acolyte's cancellation didn't come as a huge surprise. Still, season 2 not happening means several plot threads are left unresolved and fans have since been left with a long list of unanswered questions (the biggest ones all relate to that surprise appearance from Darth Plagueis).
Talking to Vulture (via SFFGazette.com) about the past, present, and future of Star Wars on streaming, Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman explained that "as it relates to Acolyte, we were happy with our performance,...

Wildwood is set to be the latest film from Laika studios and there's been some exciting news about the cast, story, and more. Laika has been responsible for some of the best animated movies in recent years, specializing in stop-motion. Laika movies tend to be meticulously designed, perfectly animated, and feature stories that resonate with older viewers as well as they do with younger ones. This niche art style means Laika films are not always box office smashes, but each one has received its fair share of critical acclaim.
Dark family movies like Coraline; epic, mystical adventures like Kubo and the Two Strings; and heartwarming comedies like The Missing Link make up just a part of the wide spectrum of Laika movies. The difficulty of stop-motion and the size of the studio means a Laika film only comes out every few years, and any announcement about one naturally causes a stir in Hollywood.

The Acolyte premiered on Disney+ on June 4 to very strong numbers. Unfortunately, the Star Wars series didn't receive the response Disney expected, and the streaming service decided not to renew it for Season 2.
The Acolyte is one of Disney's most troubled Star Wars series yet, and, although it was a success with the critics, it experienced a heavy backlash from the audience. In August 2024, Disney canceled the series after one season, to the disappointment of its many fans who enjoyed it. In a new interview with Vulture (via Variety), co-chairman of Disney Entertainment Alan Bergman explained that the decision came down to money.

A Disney exec has revealed why “The Acolyte” was canceled after just one season.
In an interview with Vulture, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment Alan Bergman said while the House of Mouse was pleased with how “The Acolyte” performed in its single season Disney+ debut, it wasn’t enough to justify a follow-up considering the price tag.
“We were happy with our performance, but it wasn’t where we needed it to be given the cost structure of that title, quite frankly, to go and make a season two,” Bergman said. “So that’s the reason why we didn’t do that.”
Upon the series’ cancellation, “Acolyte” lead Amandla Stenberg posted an 8-and-a-half-minute video to her Instagram Stories saying she was unsurprised Disney didn’t renew following the aggressive online backlash surrounding the show’s female-driven story and queer undertones.
“It’s not a huge shock for me,” Stenberg said. Ever...
