Exclusive: Wondery has lined up its latest drama podcast and it stars Rhea Seehorn.

Synopsis:

This mostly unamusing British comedy sets off with a framing device that sees heroin addict Charlie (George Webster) explaining recent events in his life to a rapt therapist (Alice Lowe). Clever-clogs viewers might assume that this is the setup for some unreliable-narrator shenanigans and a twist or two at the end, and you’d be right. But the twist – more of an ugly snarl – is unearned by the setup, and feels like the product of lazy screenwriting, devoid of psychological insight. That sort of fits the cheerful, jejune amorality of this film, which treats addiction as if it’s all a bit of a lark and that the therapeutic community – like the woman who runs Charlie’s self-help group – is way too judgmental,...

It’s not exactly an original tale to tell: that of the too good to be true stranger, who worms their way into your affections, erasing that initial nagging feeling that they weren’t all they claimed to be. That maybe they were too good to be true.

But The Holding tells its tale in a remote, rural location, makes the enigmatic stranger a wandering farm hand, and makes the central protagonist a strong willed mother of two with a dark secret. And it works.

I had no expectations for this going in, but it pleased enormously with its character development, slow burn, and intelligent plotting. The Holding, from director Susan Jacobson ("One Hundredth of a Second") and writer James Dormer ("Spooks"), is getting set to premiere in Berlin next month. This film bills itself as being "in the vein of Cape Fear," and this thriller focuses on a remote farm "in the north of England" (Boden). Here, a family is torn apart by a man with a secreted obsession.

The Holding will show in Berlin February 14th, as part of the European Film Market and later in the United Kingdom (June 1st).
