Lionsgate wants theatergoers to have the time of their lives, so the studio is adapting “Dirty Dancing” as a Broadway musical.
“Dirty Dancing: The Musical” will launch in late 2025 with aspirations for Broadway as well as a North American run. From there, producers plan to expand the show to theater markets in Asia, Australia, Latin America and beyond.
Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote the film’s screenplay, is developing the show and writing the book of the musical. Lonny Price, who played Neil Kellerman in “Dirty Dancing,” will direct the re-envisioned production. He’s a Tony nominee for “A Class Act” and “110 in the Shade” and originated the role of Charley Kringas in the ill-fated 1981 run of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along.”

The temperatures might be falling, but Netflix is turning up the heat this holiday season with a new Christmastime movie we can best describe as Hallmark meets Magic Mike.
Among the newest wave of Netflix holiday movies making their way to the streaming service this fall is The Merry Gentlemen starring One Tree Hill alum Chad Michael Murray and, if the newly released photos from Netflix are any indication, it’s about to be a very holly, jolly Christmas this year.
The new film follows former big-city dancer Ashley (Britt Robertson), who sets out to save her parents’ small-town performing venue the Rhythm Room with an all-male Christmas-themed revue. Among the men Ashley enlists to help pull off this performance is Murray’s character Luke, a contractor who often lends a hand at the Rhythm Room… just never quite in this way before. Jennifer Grey is returning to the world of Dirty Dancing.
Deadline reported Monday that a new movie will be directed by Jonathan Levine.
It serves as a sequel to the 1987 original, which starred Grey and the late Patrick Swayze.
The original made almost 215 million from a 4.5 million budget, making it one of the most profitable movies out there.
The success of the movie led to a 2004 prequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, as well as a stage version that sold out in several countries.
A made-for-tv remake released in 2017, starring Abigail Breslin and Colt Prattes.
The new flick finds Frances "Baby" Houseman returning to Kellerman's in the 1990s.
A new love story is set to take center stage, with a coming-of-age romance featuring a young woman at the summer camp.
According to Deadline, Baby's "own journey will intertwine with this to create a multi-layered narrative."

Jonathan Levine, the filmmaker behind the comedy “Long Shot’ and tear-jerker “50/50,” is taking his talents to the Catskills.
He’s been hired by Lionsgate to direct a sequel to 1987’s “Dirty Dancing,” with Jennifer Grey set to reprise her classic role as Frances “Baby” Houseman. No word as to whether she’ll be in a corner.
Prior to finding himself in the director’s chair, Levine was already attached to the project as a producer. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Elizabeth Chomko. The follow-up film, also titled “Dirty Dancing,” is expected to go into production later this year for release in 2024. International sales will launch later this month in Cannes.
Lionsgate announced back in 2020 that another “Dirty Dancing” story was in the works. Little is known about the next chapter, but Levine has hinted the sequel will include music from the original movie, as well as ’90s hip-hop.

The last time we saw “Dirty Dancing” star Jennifer Grey kick up her heels, it was in 2010 as the winner of Season 11 of “Dancing with the Stars” alongside her pro partner Derek Hough. At 50 years old, she became the show’s oldest female champion.
The actress, now 60, who co-starred as Frances “Baby” Housman opposite the late Patrick Swayze in 1987’s “Dirty Dancing” is involved in a sequel as both the star and executive producer of a new version of the film. The original was set at a Catskills resort where naive Baby learned how dance and make romance with dancing instructor Johnny Castle. Now, Baby isn’t in the corner. She’s in the producer’s chair.

A new “Dirty Dancing” movie is in the works at Lionsgate that will bring back the 1987 original’s star Jennifer Grey to both star and executive produce and that will be directed by Jonathan Levine, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer announced on its earnings call Thursday.
The studio also announced that a fifth “John Wick” movie, this one arriving after the planned “John Wick 4,” will hit theaters in 2022. The studio plans to shoot both movies in the action franchise back to back as soon as star Keanu Reeves becomes available.
Rumors of a “Dirty Dancing” remake or reboot have been circulating for some time, even without the late Patrick Swayze returning. And ABC did a TV movie update on the story back in 2017 starring Abigail Breslin, Sarah Hyland and Colt Prattes.

Greater diversity in television is a storytelling good as much as a political one. The medium has made some long-overdue strides in the last few years with inclusive casting and shows that offer fresh perspectives to an ever-wider audience. But while some of these series have been great from the start, like FX’s Pose, others have needed more fine-tuning.

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.

The original Dirty Dancing is a favorite movie to women of all ages. The magic of the film was created by the music, the spark between Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze, and of course, the dancing. It was a movie we watched when we were young, fantasizing about growing up and falling in love, and we watch it now that we're grown and remember our first loves and those magic summers of our youth.
Remaking a movie so iconic is a big risk, so I watched this ABC remake with a grain of salt. I knew it wouldn't be the Dirty Dancing of my youth, but I wanted to see what it had to offer. Here's the lowdown.
The cast: Abigail Breslin (Signs, Little Miss Sunshine, Zombieland) as Baby Houseman was a perfect fit. She's cute and youthful. She played the naive and inexperienced, yet intelligent Baby really well.

The original 1987 Dirty Dancing is a movie that worked against all odds. Eighties sensibility (and hairstyles and theme song) shoehorned into a Sixties nostalgia piece, a miniscule budget, a cast of unknowns, and a troubled production – not to mention a heroine named … Baby. And yet it positively crackled, thanks to Eleanor Bergstein's deeply personal script, crazy chemistry between leads Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, and the ethereal gyrations of the late, great Swayze.
So how do you re-create that magic? The short answer is: You don't. The long, much...

ABC's Dirty Dancing remake premiered on Wednesday night, bringing the summer romance between Johnny Castle (Colt Prattes) and Baby (Abigail Breslin) from the big screen in 1987 to the small screen in 2017. Still set in the summer of 1963, Breslin had said the new movie "for the most part it really does stay true to the original," and it really did. Baby still carried a watermelon. She still left that corner. They still did the lift. However, there were some pretty significant changes, including vocal performances, and finding out if Johnny and Baby's romance ever continued beyond the end of that...

There’s no question that Colt Prattes had the time of his life shooting “Dirty Dancing,” ABC’s musical remake of the Oscar-winning 1987 film. Prattes — a relative unknown whose biggest previous credit was the music video for Pink’s “Try” — plays Johnny Castle, the role originally played by the late Patrick Swayze. The new version airs Wednesday and also stars Abigail Breslin as Baby (Jennifer Grey’s character), with Sarah Hyland, Debra Messing, Katey Sagal, Nicole Scherzinger, Bruce Greenwood and Billy Dee Williams rounding out the cast. “You can’t do it better,” Prattes tells TheWrap of the original film.

When it comes to Dirty Dancing, most people immediately think of the late Patrick Swayze. But Colt Prattes thinks of his stepmother.
The Georgia native — who is playing Swayze’s iconic role of Johnny Castle in ABC’s remake of Dirty Dancing — grew up watching the hit 1987 movie almost every weekend that he visited his father’s house, where the TV was often tuned to an airing of it.
“She always had it on in the background, and we used to sit there and watch it,” Prattes, 31, told People of his stepmom, who has since passed away. “She loved it so much.

The subgenre of sad, meaningless remakes has rarely managed to undertake a challenge less hopeful and less sought after than ABC‘s Dirty Dancing. Not only is the original a classic that is better left alone, it is from a class of “perfect storm” movies that only the truly clueless would dare touch again. That means that the best we might have hoped for is a passable bit of entertainment. Would that these were the best of times.
Though the film puts forward the idea that this incarnation will further explore the characters we are familiar with, it is practically a reshoot, as opposed to something you would want to legitimately label a remake. Scenes are not simply reminiscent of the original, they are superimpositions. Worse still, where the movie does diverge slightly (if memory serves), things only manage to become more comic.

Nobody should make a Dirty Dancing reboot…
But if you're going to, do it right.
Before you read any further, know that I really did try to give ABC's musical adaptation a chance, I did. There have been plenty of remakes of classical hits over the past few years -- some which were not so great, but others, like Grease: Live, that were wonderfully done and satisfied almost all of the viewers who tuned in. Of course, whenever you hear the news that one of your favorite movies of All Time is going to be remade, there's that moment of excitement -- "Yes! I am pumped for this!" -- followed by fear -- "Wait, what if this goes terribly wrong?"

The musical special event craze that has led many broadcast networks to revisit beloved classics continues to push forward, undeterred by pretty disappointing efforts like “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Hairspray.” Tonight, we have ABC’s first big attempt to get in the game with “Dirty Dancing,” an epic-length remake of the 1987 romantic dance drama. This time around, it’s a full-on musical about the magical summer that made Baby (Abigail Breslin) into a woman, after she fell in love with bad boy dance teacher Johnny (Colt Prattes).

The chance to play Baby in ABC’s small-screen reimagining of Dirty Dancing was dream gig for Abigail Breslin — but even more so for her mother.
“Dirty Dancing is my mom’s No. 1 favorite movie. She actually used to say, ‘I would die if you could play Baby one day.’ When I got it, she was the first person I called,” Breslin shares in People’s special collector’s edition about the 1987 film favorite.
Breslin, 21, admits it was sometimes less dreamy to master her moves with newcomer Colt Prattes, who plays bad boy dancer Johnny to Breslin’s Baby.

Prepare to fall in love with a new Johnny Castle. Taking on the Dirty Dancing role Patrick Swayze made iconic in the 1987 film is no easy task, and it's made even harder when you need to lose at least 20 pounds for the role. But that's exactly what newcomer Colt Prattes did for ABC's remake, premiering tonight at 8 p.m. "I actually had to lose about 2030 because nobody was that big in the '60s," Prattes revealed to E! News at Dirty Dancing's PaleyLIVE premiere. And Prattes said he went on the same diet regime Matthew McConaughey did for The Dallas Buyer's Club, the 2012 film that he dropped 38 pounds for in order play a man diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, a role that won him...

The network's three-hour remake is set to premiere on Wednesday, May 24, bringing the iconic 1987 film to a whole new generation, while transporting nostalgic fans of the original back to Kellerman's. It’s the perfect summer day in western North Carolina -- sunny, breezy and warm with blues skies reflecting against the lake and stretching for miles over rolling green meadows -- and entering the grounds of the country club, a giant “Kellerman’s Lodge” sign greets you from the golf course. Couples in starched, pastel outfits sit in rocking chairs on the porch waiting on cues from the director, while a dance coach run moves on the practice log that hovers twelve inches above the ground. The set of ABC’s highly anticipated Dirty Dancing musical reimagining -- starring Little Miss Sunshine’s Abigail Breslin as Baby and Colt Prattes as Johnny Castle -- is the fancy summer camp experience of your dreams and the cast has bonded tightly just like kids at the end of the season.

If you grew up obsessed with the tale of Baby and Johnny falling in love in the Catskills, brace yourself: ABC’s upcoming “Dirty Dancing” remake is… well, different.
The original film, released in 1987, blended a classic coming-of-age story with a dance-drenched romance, as good girl Baby (Jennifer Grey) finds herself defying her family after meeting dance instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze). Set in the ’60s, it’s been an iconic favorite for 30 years, so of course it’s natural to be curious (and maybe even a little skeptical) of ABC’s remake, which premieres May 24.

As Patrick Swayze‘s character in Dirty Dancing once said, the best place to practice lifts is in the water.
