First look at ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ Part 2 (Photo Credit: Netflix)

Production has begun on Netflix’s One Hundred Years of Solitude Part 2, with Marleyda Soto and Claudio Cataño returning as Úrsula Iguarán and Colonel Aureliano Buendía. Part 1 premiered in December 2024. Netflix hasn’t announced a target date for the release of Part 2.

Part 2 newcomers include Ángela Cano, Emmanuel Restrepo, Estefanía Piñeres, María Adelaida Puerta, and Emiliano Pernía. Juanita Molina, Laura Taylor, Obeida Benavides, Julián Román, and Carla Baratta will also star.

The series is adapted from Gabriel García Marquez’s novel. Part 1 director Laura Mora returns for Part 2 and is joined by Colombian director Carlos Moreno.

Following the exceptional recognition from audiences and critics alike for the first installment of One Hundred Years of Solitude, which premiered in December, Netflix has announced the start of production for the second installment, which will complete the visual adaptation of Gabriel García Marquez’s masterpiece novel.

Laura Mora will continue her role as director in Part 2 along with Carlos Moreno, a Colombian director known for his work on renowned films like Lavaperros and Perro come perro and the series Goles en contra and Distrito Salvaje.

Marleyda Soto and Claudio Cataño reprise their roles as the iconic characters Úrsula Iguarán and Colonel Aureliano Buendía, respectively.

They will be joined by new faces who will bring more of Macondo’s characters to life, including Ángela Cano, Emmanuel Restrepo, Estefanía Piñeres, María Adelaida Puerta, Emiliano Pernía, Juanita Molina, Laura Taylor, Obeida Benavides, Julián Román, and Carla Baratta, among others.

As Ventana Sur settles into its stride in its first edition in Montevideo, Uruguay, Screen highlights 10 projects expected to make a splash at the leading Ibero-American audiovisual market.

The titles are at various stages in the production cycle and the filmmakers are in Montevideo looking to establish meaningful partnerships.

Selections include stories of vampires grappling with transformation, quests, coming-of-age stories, coastal erosion, and a project from the inaugural Latam Series Market.

Ventana Sur’s Animation! WIPs by Annecy, curated by the prestigious French festival, has unveiled the five features set to participate in its 2024 edition, coming later this month.

Titles selected for this year’s Montevideo-set get-together come from across Latin America and feature co-producers from Europe and North America. Countries with producers involved in this year’s lineup include Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Spain, Canada, France and the U.S.

According to the selection’s organizers, “This year’s selection brings together proposals that stand out for their narrative and technical diversity, confirming the moment of growth that the region’s animation industry is experiencing.”

Below, we take a closer look at the diverse and promising slate of feature titles that will be presented at this year’s Animation! WIPs by Annecy.

Animation from Spain is attending the Ottawa International Animation Festival’s Tac (The Animation Conference) for the first time this year and has brought with it three of Spain’s hottest up-and-coming animation producers for a roundtable to discuss the current state of Iberian animation and pitch their pipelines to the international and North American markets.

A Spanish government-backed presence at North America’s most important animation festival and the leading indie-dedicated animation event on the global calendar indicates a desire to become a bigger player in Canada and the U.S. while bolstering the country’s global reputation.

International ambitions are being fueled by increased activity in Spain. According to Icex Spain Trade and Investment, the Spanish government body that spearheads this year’s Ottawa involvement, in 2023, Spanish companies produced six animated features, 25 short films and 68 seasons of animated TV series.

Commercial and critically, Spanish animation is also reaching new heights.

Colombian producer Letrario and Spain’s Abano Producións have unveiled a new 2D animated feature co-production, “Mu-Ki-Ra,” which will be spotlighted at the 2024 Cannes’ Marché du Film Animation Day.

“Mu-Ki-Ra” was created by Colombian actress and screenwriter Estefanía Piñeres Duque, who co-wrote the screenplay with María Barro Guntín and is directing.

Part of the Annecy Animation Showcase at Cannes Animation Day, the film has some strong production power backing it. Galicia’s Abano Producións recently produced Spanish auteur Alberto Vázquez’s feature “Unicorn Wars,” and Letrario has an impressive catalog of live-action and animated works, including Piñeres’ 2020 short film “Color-ido,” which was an official selection at Pixelatl, AniMaze, and Rotterdam.

Several of the film’s Spanish-language voice cast roles have been filled by actors Maria Fernanda Marín, Isa Mosquera, Carmenza Gómez, and Witsey Mena.

“A New Dawn,” the feature debut of Yoshitoshi Shinomiya, an animator on Makoto Shinkai’s blockbuster “Your Name,” is one draw in a five-title Annecy Animation Showcase which involves producers of real impact on the global independent animation scene.

The showcase will unveil a second brand-new animation project, “Mu-Ki-Ra,” co-produced by “Unicorn Wars” backer Abano Producións. The Showcase also features two key French prestige animation titles: “Conference of the Birds,” now backed by Le Pacte, and “In Waves,” from Silex Films, Anonymous Content, and leading sales agency Charades. Rounding up the selection is the anticipated Mexican feature “The Language of Birds.”

Tender father-daughter tale “My Dad, The Truck,” raucous coming-of-age series “Esther” and poignant docu-series “The Impossible Future” are among the projects venturing to Annecy’s Mifa Market for pitch sessions Wednesday as part of the Ibero-American Animation League’s annual forum.

Simultaneously, La Liga will also launch Ibermedia Next to foster the development of innovative animated co-productions between Iberoamerican countries and Italy, Portugal and Spain, organized in tandem with Ibermedia and Premios Quirino.

“This edition of Annecy holds immense significance for Latin America, with Mexico at the forefront as the country of honor,” Animation! head Silvina Cornillon told Variety. “Our dedicated Focus program perfectly captures the essence of Ibero-American animation’s dynamic and multifaceted creative spirit, reflecting its vibrancy and diversity in full measure.”

A spirited collaboration between Argentina’s Animation! Ventana Sur, Premios Quirino de la Animación Iberoamericana of Tenerife and Mexico’s Pixelatl Festival, the event aims to further bolster promising filmmakers.

Las Villamizar is a Colombian series starring Shany Nadan, María José Vargas and Estefanía Pineres. It is directed by Herney Luna and Mateo Stivelberg.

Further buzz titles take in “Esther,” from Argentina’s Ezequiel Torres, an action-packed coming of age adventure, doc series “The Imposible Future,” by Argentina’s Martin Haas and Antonio Balseiro and pre-school comedy adventure “King Gaston,” from Brazil’s Diogo Viegas.

Now firmly established as one of Latin America’s foremost animation forums, 2022’s Animation! saw an all-time record of 203 submissions.

That high attests to animation’s continuing growth in Latin America, powered primarily by a new generation of vocational animation talent which has broken through in the last 5-15 years, often spending much of them making shorts or animated commercials.

Having already topped its pre-pandemic heights, the massive attendance at this year’s Annecy edition is indicative of the flourishing post-pandemic boom that the whole audiovisual industry is feeling.

Amidst this promising landscape, Colombian animation has made a strong appearance in both Annecy’s Official Selection and its MIFA market alongside an event presented by Bam – the Bogotá Audiovisual Market – where five projects targeting kids 3-11 were pitched.

Colombia’s presence is the result of an exponential growth in the animation sector that by 2019 was globally exporting projects valued at 100,000 and which rounded off 2021 with that figure at 3.5 million.

Reasons for exponential growth cut several ways; Colombia’s tax rebate; a growing generation of artists with a firm hold on the technical aspects of animation’s pipeline structure; and the ever-growing presence of international companies.

Launched in 2003, but built upon since then, Colombian film incentives have made the country a model for Latin America.
