Making a film often has the objective of showing it to people, but what if you make a movie that no one alive today is ever going to get to see? Whatever it may be, it’s still a banger of a marketing campaign, as was the case with 100 Years, a film made to promote Louis Xiii, a cognac that takes a century to make as well.

Hearing that an upcoming project will be an experimental film can oftentimes give pause to moviegoers. It might mean that the filmmakers have chosen to sacrifice quality in favor of attempting to revolutionize the format. Alternatively, the plot could be excessively convoluted, as the creatives behind the project are willing to overlook a coherent story to achieve their eccentric vision. However, other film fans get excited when they hear that a non-traditional movie is being attempted. The coming-of-age drama Boyhood, which was filmed over 12 years by Richard Linklater, comes to mind. Modern media has become increasingly formulaic, so experimental films can serve to throw a wrench in the system.
Whether you're a fan of this type of film or find it overly indulgent, there is one experimental picture that shouldn't be the cause of either concern or excitement. In all certainty, when it comes out, you won't even be around to see it.

Shuya Chang is magnetic as the illegal immigrant searching for her daughter, who is taken under the wing of a charismatic older gangster
Writer-director Evan Jackson Leong’s tale of a street-smart illegal immigrant who gets taken under the wing of a charismatic older gangster follows a well-worn plot beat-for-beat, right down to the inevitable montage in the midsection set to slinky pop. The kicker is that the apprentice and the master are women, exhibiting much the same unflinching ruthlessness you would find in a Martin Scorsese, Johnnie To or Park Chan-wook movie, but with a little less violence. But that doesn’t mean no violence: at one point, New York Chinatown kingpin Dai Mah (Jade Wu), a character based on a real female crime boss, slits a man’s throat with the effortless focus of a butcher slaughtering a pig, and barely gets a drop of blood on her dowdy polyester housecoat.

The familiar story of a new recruit rising through the ranks of organized crime is given a punchy female Asian twist in “Snakehead.” , this first narrative feature by documentary maker Evan Jackson Leong (“Linsanity”) is highlighted by outstanding performances by Shuya Chang as the fearless newbie and Jade Wu as the matriarch of a family specializing in the nasty business of human smuggling. Though it switches tone abrasively at times, and some story aspects feel a little too formulaic, “Snakehead” burns brightly when focused on the Faustian relationship of its formidable female characters. The future looks promising for Leong’s long-gestating labor of love, which opens in theaters and online on Oct. 29 following its major launch at Toronto.

“Chinatown doesn’t change for anybody,” says Jade Wu’s Dai Mah late in Evan Jackson Leong’s “Snakehead,” the kind of line that sounds like an intentional callback to 1974’s “Chinatown.” That’s not surprising, as so much of Leong’s long-time passion project plays like a tribute to the Old Masters of cinema. “Snakehead” doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but considering its all-Asian cast and bent toward chronicling women in power, there’s an air of something truly special to the crime drama, especially in Shuya Chang’s contemplative performance.
An opening title card tells us that for $50,000, Chinese immigrants can be sent to the United States, where they will be then forced into prostitution and other illegal jobs as a means of paying off the debt to the person who brought them, the eponymous “snakehead.” Sister Tse (Chang) is one such woman, working to survive in America...

After making its festival rounds in California earlier this spring, Evan Jackson Leong’s “Snakehead” opened this year’s Asian American International Film Festival in New York. The film follows the ever-elusive Sister Tse (Shuya Chang) through the New York Chinatown’s criminal underworld. Through shows of unrelenting loyalty in seemingly mundane situations — a dumpling house, a fish shop, and of course a secret torture chamber — she wins the heart of Dai Mah (Jade Wu), the local matriarch and pimp who smuggled her through. Her undying devotion comes at a crossroads, however, when her daughter is endangered. Rife with prostitution, drugs, and violence, “Snakehead” dreams up a visionary thriller sprinkled with hot-button issues and suggestive key words.

"There's no need to escalate this to the point of no return!" STX Films has unveiled an official trailer for a dark comedy called Me You Madness, a kooky neon-filled romcom mashed up with American Psycho. Louise Linton stars in, wrote, directed, and produced the tongue-in-cheek movie. Linton plays Catherine Black, a brilliant, ruthless business executive who runs a top hedge fund in L.A. She lives a wealthy but ice-cold life and is a self-declared murderous psychopath. Enter Tyler Jones, a handsome young petty-thief and con man, arriving at her Malibu estate seeking "a room for rent" while naively unaware that he might be her next meal. Co-starring Ed Westwick as Tyler, along with Joel Michaely, Shuya Chang, and Gwen Van Dam. "Romance blossoms amid glamorous action in this neon-tinged, self-aware erotic thriller riff from writer/director/star Louise Linton, driven by a high-energy 80s soundtrack." This looks ridiculous.

Ahead of its premiere in late February, Netflix has today revealed the action-packed first trailer for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword Of Destiny, and I hope you’re sitting comfortably.
Taking up the reins from Ang Lee, the sequel formerly known as The Green Legend is directed by Yuen Woo-Ping, the esteemed fight choreographer who served on the original film, and his flair for slick, physics-defying action sequences shines through in today’s first look teaser. Out of the cast that starred in the beloved original, only Michelle Yeoh’s Yu Shu-Lien returns for the direct-to-streaming sequel, who fights with every fibre in her being to prevent a legendary sword from falling into the grubby hands of a malevolent warlord.
Netflix is firmly behind Sword of Destiny, having brokered a deal with The Weinstein Company, though whether feature length sequel can possibly recapture the genre-defining spirit of Lee’s...

Zoolander and My Big Fat Greek Wedding won’t be the only films from the early aughts getting a sequel early next year. The Weinstein Company recently went ahead with production on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, the sequel to Ang Lee‘s Oscar-winning 2000 film, albeit with no involvement from the director. Instead, it comes from Yuen Woo-ping, the accomplished choreographer behind The Matrix, and numerous Jackie Chan films.
The first trailer has now landed today, which comes from Netflix, where it’ll get a day-and-date release in early February, along with — on the other side of a spectrum — an IMAX run. As the synopsis reads, “The fight to keep a great warrior’s sword from an evil warlord will change them in ways they never imagined.”

In honor of the one hundred year aging process it uses for its cognac, luxury brand Louis Xiii hired director Robert Rodriguez and actor John Malkovich to make a film called 100 Years that will be placed in a time capsule and opened on November 18th, 2115. According to Rodriguez, the story is "emotionally charged," but io9 reports that the company is keeping everything else secret.
Marko Zaror and Shuya Chang co-star. Take a look at a featurette below:
Louis Xiii is sending metal movie tickets to 1,000 "influential people," asking them to pass the tickets down to their descendants who will be alive in 2115 so they can attend the premiere.
They've released three teasers for the project, but none of the footage you'll see in them will be found in the actual movie. Instead, these were just "created to show what it might look like when someone uncovers the film in 100 years.

Say what? Our friends at io9 have written about a movie called 100 Years that stars John Malkovich and Shuya Chang, directed by Robert Rodriguez, set in the future. Yes this is actually one giant marketing gimmick to promote a liquor called Louis Xiii Cognac, an ultra-luxury liquor that is aged 100 years. The idea is that the film has been made, but is going into the cognac vaults for 100 years, and will be stored there not to be shown until 2115. There are teasers and a featurette available (below) but apparently none of these have anything to do with the actual movie. Yeah. Instead, no one alive now will probably ever see what they actually make (really?), but someone will one day. Supposedly. Or maybe we're just supposed to imagine it. Here's the pitch: "Louis Xiii is a true testament to the mastery of time and we sought to create a proactive...

As cinephiles, one can feel restless if you’re not seeking out new films, attempting to conquer the filmography of a director or perhaps finding under-the-radar gems that haven’t been canonized. Well, unless you’re a few years old reading this or you miraculously discover the Fountain of Youth, you’ll never complete the filmography of Robert Rodriguez.
The Sin City director recently collaborated with John Malkovich on a film titled 100 Years, which no one will see for the next century. Backed by Louis Xiii Cognac, the reason for the delayed release November 2115 is because the liquor itself is aged for 100 years. As for the film, it’s currently locked up in a vault in Cognac, France and no footage has made its way online, but we do have a featurette and a trio of teasers created separately, imaging what the future might look like when the film is unveiled.

Dragon Seed: Lau & Loo’s Dissatisfying NYC Chinese Gang Saga
Martin Scorsese appears as executive producer on Andrew Lau and Andrew Loo’s Revenge of the Green Dragons, which is no surprise considering he famously remade Lau’s 2002 film Infernal Affairs as The Departed (2006). Featuring a gritty period portrait of gangland warfare in New Your City, it’s clearly the sort of material that Scorsese seems to be attracted to, and thematically, one could even say there are influences of titles like Mean Streets (1973) or Goodfellas (1990) in the mix, with slight homages here and there. But the similiarites are only skin deep. This saga, which is actually based on fact, feels too zany and forthright, any realistic human elements crushed beneath its predilection for exaggerated, dramatic performances and hyperviolence.
In 1983 Flushing, a young boy, Sonny, crosses into the Us without parents. Snakehead Mama (Eugenia Yuan), head of a Chinese...

The first trailer, poster and syopsis have been released for Revenge of the Green Dragons, the upcoming crime drama from directors Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs) and Andrew Loo.
Martin Scorsese is serving as executive producer on the movie, something which isn’t a huge surprise in some ways as it was The Wolf of Wall Street director who helmed a remake of Infernal Affairs with 2006′s The Departed.
Revenge of the Green Dragons focuses on two immigrant brothers who join a Chinatown gang known as “The Green Dragons” in order to survive the poverty of 1980s New York. It’s based on a true story, and interestingly it appears as if the concept of the American Dream will form the movie’s backdrop.

Ray Liotta, Justin Chon (Twilight), and Harry Shum, Jr. (Glee) star in the 1990s NYC-set action crime drama that’s executive produced by Martin Scorsese and set to debut next month at the Toronto Film Festival. Revenge of the Green Dragons is helmed by Andrew Lau & Andrew Loo and was inspired by Frederick Dannen’s New Yorker article chronicling Asian-American gang life in Queens, NY. It’s a reunion of sorts for Lau and Scorsese after the latter remade Lau’s Hong Kong crime pic Infernal Affairs into his own Oscar-winning 2006 film The Departed. Pic tracks immigrant siblings Sonny (Chon) and Steven (Kevin Wu) who join Chinatown’s Green Dragons in pursuit of their own American Dream, only to find themselves at odds when Sonny turns against his brother and the organization.

A24 Films has released the first Revenge of the Green Dragons trailer and poster for directors Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs) and Andrew Loo’s upcoming crime drama. Based on a true story, the film revolves around two immigrant brothers (played by Justin Chon and Kevin Wu) who survive the poverty of 1980s New York by joining the Chinatown gang “The Green Dragons”, where they quickly rise up the ranks and draw the attention of the city cops. Martin Scorsese—who remade Infernal Affairs with 2006’s The Departed—lends his name to the film as an executive producer, and it’s not hard to see why. The trailer highlights a unique story with heavy stakes, told against the backdrop of the American Dream. It looks to be an altogether promising feature, and one I’m curious to check out. Hit the jump to check out the Revenge of the Green Dragons trailer and poster.

The last time director Andrew Lau and Martin Scorsese were directly associated, it was because Scorsese was remaking Lau’s Infernal Affairs as The Departed. This time around, he’s simply helping out as an executive producer, backing Lau’s new English-language crime thriller Revenge Of The Green Dragons, which has launched a trailer.Directed by Lau and Andrew Loo, from a script by Loo and Michael Dijiacomo, Green Dragons follows immigrant brothers Sonny (Justin Chon) and Steven (Kevin Wu) who live and survive in the impoverished squalor of 1980s New York largely by joining powerful Chinatown gang The Green Dragons.Rising quickly through the ranks, the brothers are soon drawing the suspicious attention of tough city cops, but it’s love that truly puts them in danger.
