Patty Jenkins has had one of the most fascinating careers in Hollywood over the past two decades. The incredibly talented filmmaker's debut film, Monster, was a crowning achievement that earned Charlize Theron a Best Actress Oscar. While she spent the next several years directing top-tier television, it surprisingly took Jenkins 14 years for her to make her next movie: 2017's Wonder Woman. That film became a huge cultural phenomenon, even leading to Jenkins being named #7 on Time Magazine's Person of the Year list.
Jenkins returned for Wonder Woman 1984, which had the misfortune of being released during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, she has been working to get her Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron, off the ground and was recently attached to a new Lego project at Universal. The outspoken Jenkins has never been shy about her feelings regarding how women are treated in Hollywood. There is no doubt...

On March 17, Hannah Ware, the star of Netflix's new show The One, appeared on an episode of her sister Jessie Ware's Table Manners podcast, and honestly - it was hilarious. Jessie hosts the podcast with their mom, Helena Ware, so this episode was truly a family affair. It took no time at all for the sibling rivalry to begin, with Hannah being quick to recall one of the most embarrassing stories from her and Jessie's childhood.
"My sister was splashing me from the bathroom; there was no privacy in our house, so Jessie was having a bath, I was probably cleaning my teeth in the bathroom, and she was splashing me and I told her to stop, and she wouldn't listen," Hannah told listeners. "So I smashed her head against the bath and I knocked her second tooth out, and Mum's best friend,...

Imagine a world where you could not only find your perfect match, but you'd also be scientifically and genetically proven to fall in love with them (and vice versa), simply by sending off a DNA sample. Well, that's exactly the world that Netflix's new show The One is set in, and it's not all it's cracked up to be. The show follows the story of Rebecca (played by Hannah Ware), the CEO of a company called MatchDNA that helps people find their perfect match. The success of the company hinges entirely on one single DNA database that Rebecca and her business partner have access to, and the show goes on to explore the effects of "the match" on different relationships.
While it sounds like a good idea at first, and in principle suggests that everyone eventually ends up with their one perfect match, in reality, what it means is...

Set in the very near future where scientists have discovered a method of matching people with their perfect romantic fit using DNA, eight-part Netflix Original The One is technically a sci-fi drama. Really though, it’s a crime thriller revolving around the murky circumstances in which the cash cow company behind the matching service was created. Written by Misfits and Crazyhead creator Howard Overman, The One is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by John Marrs. It’s a cat-and-mouse game between wealthy, driven CEO Rebecca (Hannah Ware) and police detective Kate (Zoë Tapper).

First, to clear the dirty plates from the table: yes, there’s already a TV series about a DNA-based dating app that matches people with their perfect partner. It’s AMC’s Soulmates, it’s on Amazon Prime, and premise aside, it bears no similarity to this new Netflix drama. Soulmates is a US anthology series, each episode of which tells a discrete story with a new cast and characters. The One is a UK serialised drama based on John Marrs’ 2017 novel – to which, incidentally, it also bears very little similarity. Call it convergent evolution, or just the way TV works.
(The team behind The One also made the updated War of the Worlds drama that aired around the same time as the BBC’s latest adaptation and is currently readying series two. Risk of confusion or comparison clearly doesn’t faze them.)

"The One", is a new dramatic, 8-episode science fiction TV series, based on the novel by John Marrs, starring Hannah Ware, streaming March 12, 2021 on Netflix:
"...'The One' is set five minutes in the future, in a world where a 'DNA' test can find your perfect partner – the one person you're genetically predisposed to fall passionately in love with. No matter how good your relationship, which one of us can honestly say we haven't thought about whether there is someone better out there? What if a hair sample is all it takes to find them? The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive. We will never think of love and relationships in the same way again..."

The fact that The First‘s astronauts were all space suited-up with nowhere to go until the very end of Season 1 proved to be the ambitious — and now cancelled — series’ undoing, Hulu’s Craig Erwich suggested Monday at the Television Critics Assoc. winter press tour.
While the streamer’s VP of originals maintained that he’s “really proud” of the drama and Sean Penn’s lead performance, the exec conceded that series creator Beau Willimon’s decision to focus Season 1 on “people taking on the adventure of going to Mars but not the actual adventure” did not resonate with viewers.

There will be no second season for Beau Willimon’s Hulu series The First, starring Sean Penn. Hulu has opted not to renew the drama, which was picked up straight-to-series by the streaming network, Deadline has confirmed.
Written by Willimon and executive produced by Willimon and his producing partner Jordan Tappis, The First followed the first human mission to Mars, exploring the challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonization. The story focused not only on the astronauts, but also on their families and loved ones, as well as the ground team on Earth. Natasha McElhone, LisaGay Hamilton, Keiko Agena and Hannah Ware also starred.
“It’s a story about the human spirit,” said Willimon when the series order was announced. “About our indomitable need to reach for unknown horizons. When Beau Willimon was a kid, his father would leave home for up to five months at a time. Henry Willimon was a captain in the U.S. Navy and worked as an engineer on nuclear subs. For those long stretches at sea, he couldn’t even send messages home.
“One of my earliest memories, when we were stationed at Pearl Harbor, was him taking me down into a sub,” Willimon said. “To a four-year-old kid, it’s a spaceship. You’ve never seen anything like it. You’re in this completely enclosed, high-tech environment, staring through a periscope, and you know this thing is traversing the oceans underwater for months on end.”
Willimon credits these early memories for piquing his interest in space travel, and thus his new Hulu drama, “The First.” Chronicling mankind’s first manned mission to Mars, the eight-part first season also examines a bond between father...

Hulu’s The First is being sold as the story of Sean Penn leading the crew chosen for the first manned mission to Mars. This is two bait-and-switches for the price of one. For starters, when the series begins, Penn is not actually part of that first crew until something goes wrong and he’s asked to lead a second mission. And the series, from House of Cards creator Beau Willimon, is barely interested in Mars (which no character gets physically close to in Season One), preferring to use the...

Of the many early attributes fueling “The First,” the opening score best captures the magnitude of what Hulu’s new drama series has in store. Horns quietly rise over a simmering hum until, just as the sun cracks through the darkness and casts a brilliant sliver of light over the red planet, Colin Stetson’s arrangement reaches a powerful crescendo; it calls to mind Hans Zimmer’s “Man of Steel” theme, but it’s reminiscent of any awe-inspiring moment made accessible by living among the stars, rather than resting under them.
Among other things, Beau Willimon’s first serialized story since “House of Cards” inspires this kind of lofty rhetoric. Its sheer optimism matches the long-standing American mythos once defined by our trip to the moon instead of the ugly present mired by contentious connections between individuals, parties, and societies. There’s a troubling trend on TV these days: shows that way overextend their storylines in order to fill out a full season’s worth of episodes. With Peak TV competing for our eyeballs by throwing hundreds of hours of TV at us, we’re facing an epidemic of storytelling bloat, and Hulu’s The First is just the latest glaring example. It’s a high-minded, immaculately shot drama that takes a potentially exciting premise — the first manned space mission to Mars — and stretches it to the point where all the excitement is slowly drained out of it.

"Why are you helping Israel?" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for a spy thriller titled The Angel, the latest feature from Israeli director Ariel Vromen. Also starring Toby Kebbell, Hannah Ware, Waleed Farouq Zuaiter, Maisa Abd Elhadi, Sasson Gabay, Miki Leon, Ori Pfeffer, and Slimane Daz. “I always think of [Carl] Sagan‘s words: Every human being who ever was lived out their lives on a mound of dust suspended in a sunbeam,” he says.

Beau Willimon is following up “House of Cards” with a series of the opposite intent.

Here’s a question: is this the new wave of films we’re expecting? Have we lost all sense of creativity that now we have to look towards terrible events as a means to create a film with emotional appeal? Be it Patriots Day or Bastille Day from last year alone, to countless other films released in the past decade– it’s a manipulation of the emotions that warrants questioning. Granted, this is completely different from historical films like All The President’s Men or Zodiac, but then the question is, is it any different than films from World War II or Vietnam, like Pearl Harbor or Apocalypse Now?
Anyhow. .. .
Arnold Schwarzenegger is definitely pulling it in with that emotional appeal. He lost his wife all the while is busy attempting to fight a white guy in power who lost his old job.
No this isn’t the real world.
