(Warning: Big “Saltburn” spoilers ahead.)
“Well, it was mostly based on the family I murdered.”
So said Emerald Fennell during a discussion of the film she wrote and directed, “Saltburn,” that was part of TheWrap Screening Series. She was, of course, joking about what inspired her latest movie, but her deadpan delivery fit right into the tonal razor’s edge that “Saltburn” assuredly walks, straddling horror, melodrama and pitch-black comedy. It’s the story of Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford student of modest means with a tragic backstory who befriends and becomes infatuated with an aristocratic classmate named Theo Catton, played by Jacob Elordi. When Oliver joins Theo at Saltburn, his family’s dazzlingly posh estate, Oliver’s true motivations become evident.

Saltburn is filled with hidden details and references that may require multiple viewings to fully capture. The film is influenced by literary, historical, and cinematic references, including Cruel Intentions and A Clockwork Orange. There are hidden foreshadowings and Easter eggs throughout the film, such as the lyric change in the opening song and Felix's doppelgänger.
There is a great number of hidden details and references in Emerald Fennell's Saltburn, many of them which would be difficult to spot even after multiple viewings. While the film is being mostly talked about for its most twisted scenes and characters, there is also a wealth of literary, historical, and cinematic references that can be found throughout Saltburn with a careful eye. Because of the shock value that completely takes over the film upon first watch, Saltburn has proven that it requires multiple viewings to full capture the breadth of its influences.

Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises.
As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list. Only two, under Academy rules, can be nominated.
The mild surprise was the citing of two new songs from “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower”) and two from “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”), while two of the biggest musicals of the season, “Wonka” and “Wish,” failed to make the cut in either category.

In six separate conversations, Tangcay spoke with the teams behind “Oppenheimer,” “Saltburn,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “American Fiction” and “The Color Purple.”
See the full Variety A Night With Artisans recap below.

Plot: Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton, who invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s sprawling estate, for a summer never to be forgotten.
Review: We all have a fascination with the rich. The sordid lives of the aristocratic have always made for brilliant fodder in novels, television, and film. For her second directorial effort, Emerald Fennell has looked into the lives of a clan of rich Brits through the eyes of an outsider. Like Promising Young Woman, Saltburn begins as a dark comedy and an indictment of old money becomes a psychological thriller. With her trademark wit and a stellar cast led by Barry Keoghan in one of his best performances to date, Saltburn is a movie made to be recognized during awards season. The problem is that...

It wasn’t a tough decision for Anthony Willis when Emerald Fennell asked him to compose Saltburn, the drama that stars Barry Keoghan as a young and nerdy Oxford university student who becomes obsessed with a popular and wealthy student (Jacob Elordi).
Willis had made the music Fennell’s Promising Young Women, and was obsessed himself with the director’s enthusiasm and sense of humor when approaching a project — especially a daring one like Saltburn, which also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, Archie Madekwe, Alison Oliver and Promising Young Woman‘s Carey Mulligan.
The MGM Amazon Studios pic had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and hits U.S. theaters next week.
“She brings out something special in every department,” Willis said of Fennell during a panel for the movie at Deadline’s Sound and Screen: Film event. “She’s such an egalitarian. She has dirty synth.

Now here's something even a killer doll could sing and dance to. Mere months after the horror-comedy "M3GAN" came to theaters and swept the world of its collective feet with its brutally macabre, yet weirdly compelling story of a slightly too-clingy murderous android, fans are about to get the chance to relive all the thrills and scares through its official vinyl release. The popular record label Waxwork Records has unveiled their newest must-have release: the official "M3GAN" soundtrack from BAFTA-nominated composer Anthony Willis ("Promising Young Woman"), featuring exclusive artwork inspired by the film from artist Susi Vilchez, two colorful vinyl discs, and even more goodies for the vinyl collector nerds out there.

M3GAN composer Anthony Willis explains his collaboration process with director Gerard Johnstone to write the song "Tell Me Your Dreams" and how the singing scene was filmed. M3GAN has taken the world by storm, earning more than 146 million worldwide with a sequel already greenlit. M3GAN is directed by Johnstone from a story by horror legend James Wan and a screenplay by Akela Cooper. In the movie, eight-year-old Cady is orphaned and sent to live with her aunt Gemma. Not expecting to become the guardian of a young girl, Gemma becomes overwhelmed and turns to her M3GAN prototype to help look after Cady and prove herself at work. However, this decision will have unthinkably dangerous consequences.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Willis breaks down the entire process behind the creation of the original song "Tell Me Your Dreams." He explains how the song came to be, including...

Warning: Spoilers for M3GAN.2023's horror slate started off with a bang thanks to M3GAN, the hilarious, brutal, and thrilling sci-fi film about a murderous nanny doll that brought audiences to theaters in droves. M3GAN's success was so immediate that a sequel was greenlit shortly after release, with M3GAN 2.0 already slated for a 2025 release. Directed by Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN features a story by acclaimed horror creator James Wan, and a screenplay by sci-fi and horror expert Akela Cooper.
Another standout aspect of M3GAN was the film's music, which was in on the stakes and the humor of the film in equal parts. The score for M3GAN was written by Anthony Willis, who blended musical techniques and implemented unique instrumentation to help bring the movie to life. Willis contributed heavily to some of the already meme-worthy M3GAN's standout moments, as he arranged the music behind the titular...

Warning: This post contains spoilers for M3GAN
M3GAN may be a horror film, but it will also be remembered for the meme-worthy singing and dance sequences it spawned. Part of M3GAN’s wildly successful run at the box office is due to the film’s marketing team, which helped to usher in a plethora of viral moments, including memes, TikTok videos, and a M3GAN dance troupe that made appearances at multiple events leading up to the film’s theatrical release in the U.S.
M3GAN does what most horror movie dolls don’t do — she sings, dances, and sometimes does both while killing anyone standing in her way. When Allison Williams' Gemma created M3GAN, she wasn’t expecting her to go off the deep end, but the AI doll provided the audience with some entertaining moments by doing so. One of the most unexpected moments in M3GAN occurred when she sang “Titanium” to Cady,...

This piece contains slight spoilers for "M3GAN."
Sure, we have already sung the praises of how "M3GAN" expertly uses "Titanium" as a bizarre needle-drop, but why let that song have all the fun? There were, of course, a few other key moments where M3GAN shows off her singing chops in bizarre attempts to make Cady (Violet McGraw) feel better. In fact, the first instance of her singing comes during a pivotal scene where the soon-to-be killer doll sings a prototypically inspirational song filled with buzzwords to Funki board members.
As expected, this was not just a funny coincidence. In an interview with Variety, "M3GAN" director Gerard Johnstone revealed that the purpose of the song, officially titled "Tell Me Your Dreams," was meant to poke fun at slap-dashed children's entertainment seemingly made by algorithms. He walked the trade through its inception, detailing how he approached composer Anthony Willis with a bold combination of ideas.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “M3GAN.”
“M3GAN had to be perfect. We couldn’t have one hair out of place,” director Gerard Johnstone says of the murderous AI doll at the heart of his latest film. “It was actually a horrifically difficult shoot. It was so hard.”
“I had a really great team around me, who were all having fun and reminding each other, ‘Hey, this movie is fun.’ That was a real joy,” he adds. After the challenging shoot, Johnstone himself finally remembered the humor: “It was amazing when the first edit came in to be reminded, ‘Oh, this film was actually quite charming and fun.’”
Now that the film has scored a killer 30 million opening weekend, it seems all the hard work was worth it. In an interview with Variety, Johnstone breaks down the film’s original ending that was scrapped, why he’s hoping for...

As a movie, “Promising Young Woman,” the debut feature from “Killing Eve” writer/director Emerald Fennell out April 17 via Focus Features, defies easy categorization. Anchored by a star turn from Carey Mulligan, the film blends equal parts thriller and pitch-black comedy with occasional dashes of traditional rom-com and ‘90s noir drama structures. It’s all told through the unique, stylized lens of Fennell, who navigates the viewer through a unique take on post-#MeToo society.
The film’s eclectic mix of genres with a strong female perspective will also be at the forefront of its official soundtrack, due April 3 via Capitol Records. The album will feature eight all-new songs created for the film, including four covers and four original songs. Two of the album’s originals are written and performed by Cyn, whose first single and video from the project, “Drinks,” was released Friday (March 6.)
