A ripping yarn about a killer kangaroo conceals a sweet little Disneyesque family drama in Ozploitation director Ryan Coonan’s adaptation of his 2014 short, Waterborne. Shot in the wilds of Brisbane with a skeleton crew and barely enough actors to keep its monster fed, its ability to attract international viewers stems mostly from the presence of Alien: Covenant star Tess Haubrich and genre legend Michael Biehn – as you’ve never seen him before.
Haubrich is small town sheriff Maddie, a troubled young woman who blames herself for the death of her war hero father yet who is still tough enough to step up and take charge when occasion demands it, as we see in an early scene involving a scuffle in the local pub. Unfortunately, the two likeable rogues whom she sends off to walk home, after confiscating their car keys, are unlucky enough to attract the attention of a.

Horror drama about a marsupial in the frame for murder brings earnestness and maudlin backstory where none is needed
It is a horror movie truth universally acknowledged that if your killer bounces after its victims, you’d best play it for laughs. But that is something mystifyingly lost on Ryan Coonan’s slasher flick, which appears to have transformed the hench kangaroo meme into a feature-length film. Sadly, Rippy is no antipodean Cocaine Bear; after traversing wastes of maudlin backstory, it waits until the final five minutes before finally delivering some tongue-in-cheek sauce courtesy of a famous marsupial catchphrase.
Outback sheriff Maddie (Tess Haubrich) lives in the shadow of her late, toast-of-the-town cop father, who was also a high-school sports champion and war hero. (She saves us having to work this out by telling us off the bat in voiceover.) When his wild-eyed buddy Schmitty (Michael Biehn) wanders in babbling about a humongous homicidal joey,...

Alien fans were excited about the news of an Alien: Romulus follow-up. Franchise creator Ridley Scott stokes the fire with a tease for another sequel's plot.
Director Ridley Scott told THR that Prometheus resurrected the Alien franchise. Expressing his regret over not taking ownership of the IP after the success of Alien, Scott also said the sequels botched the canon plot. "I watched Alien 2, 3 and 4 and realized, 'Oh, you just ran that firmly into the ground,'" he asserted. "Then I went back to [former 20th Century Fox chief Tom Rothman] and said, 'Listen, there's a way out. We should resurrect Alien with Prometheus.'" That movie divided the fan base but has since gained a cult following; it also earned a sequel in Alien: Covenant.

Rippy, originally entitled The Red before getting retitled to riff on the old kid’s show Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, is the latest creature feature from down under. As if Australia didn’t already have enough critters that will kill you, director Ryan Coonan and co-writer Richard Barcaricchio have expanded their 2014 short Waterborne and turned a giant kangaroo into a flesh hungry zombie.
Maddy is the sheriff of the small outback town of Axehead. It’s a job her war hero father held before he died saving her life. She feels the pressure of living up to his reputation, and days like this don’t help.

Ryan Coonan’s 2024 dark comedy Rippy tells the strange but true story of a zombie kangaroo terrorizing an Australian country town. Set mostly at night in the rural community of Axehead, the film stars Tess Haubrich as Sheriff Maddy, a young officer trying to live up to her late father’s legacy.
Just as the pressures of her job start weighing her down, a series of gruesome attacks leaves the townsfolk ripped to shreds. Maddy and her eccentric Uncle Schmitty, played by veteran actor Michael Biehn, must work to stop the undead assailant before it’s too late.
Through their investigation, they discover the culprit is none other than Rippy, a hulking zombie kangaroo on the rampage. With most of the action taking place after dark and plenty of gore along the way, Rippy sets out to be a wild horror comedy ride.

The phrase “Killer Kangaroo” rolls off the tongue quite well, so it’s nice to finally put it to use. A rampaging ‘roo is indeed the star of Ryan Coonan’s debut, which is based on his previous short Waterborne. However, there is a twist to why the marsupial star of Rippy (originally called The Red) is so steamed up; a mysterious ailment has turned him into a boxing zombie. That kind of logline is prime for hilarity. As it turns out though, this movie does the opposite and ends up playing things straight. Perhaps too much so.
Australia is home to many dangerous creatures: crocodiles, spiders, sharks, and handfuls of lethal snakes. Do kangaroos count as one of those fearsome fauna? Yes and no. Over the years, Netflix has expanded into a variety of genres with original content, but they never let go of being a go-to place for some of the best movies ever made. As the streaming wars continue and services like Disney+ and Apple TV+ continue to gain traction, Netflix is becoming less of the dominant go-to content hub that it used to be. That said, sci-fi fans can find great value in a Netflix subscription, thanks to the genre movies available on the platform.
Netflix broke out as a leader in the genre thanks to the original sci-fi series Stranger Things and that opened the floodgates to countless movies and streaming series for fans to enjoy. Much of its library consists of titles released in the past couple of decades, but there are a few classics on the streaming service for people who love all flavors of sci-fi. From big-budget...

Details of his role are being kept under wraps, but we understand he will essentially play the villain of the piece, which is a tentpole of Disney+’s Australia and New Zealand 2022/23 slate and was unveiled in Sydney last month.

This article contains Spiderhead spoilers.
It looks almost blissful. That serene sunset Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth) imagines he’s flying toward might as well be heaven for the good doctor. After all, he’s unlikely to see the real thing once his plane smashes headlong into a mountain.
So ends Abnesti Pharmaceuticals’ experiments on the remote island and institute of “Spiderhead,” and so too ends Steve Abnesti. It’s a surprisingly cheeky conclusion to Joseph Kosinski’s new science fiction thriller out now on Netflix. Up to this point, audiences have been asked to consider how dark things can get as the backstories of each inmate become clear, and the prospect of escape from their guilt over past mistakes seems even less likely than it does from this gilded hellhole. And yet, both Jeff (Miles Teller) and Lizzy (Jurnee Smollett) live to console each other another day and figure out...

In real life, there would probably be no shortage of people willing to commit crimes if it resulted in being given free reign to wander around a minimum-security prison and receive psychedelic drugs administered by Chris Hemsworth. So it’s not too much of a stretch to go along with the imaginative premise of Netflix’s new, nearly unclassifiable film starring the MCU veteran along with Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett.
Based on a short story by George Saunders, Joseph Kosinski’s Spiderhead could be categorized as sci-fi, except its central conceit isn’t all that far removed from our “better living through chemistry” reality. It’s a thriller at times, but also a wickedly funny dark comedy. And it features a nostalgia-inducing yacht rock soundtrack that slyly comments on the action.

Along came a spider…but these inmates are the ones really caught in a deceitful web.
Netflix’s psychedelic psychological thriller “Spiderhead” pairs mind-freeing drugs with the physically constraining prison system. Based on George Saunders’ New Yorker short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” the film stars Jurnee Smollett and Miles Teller as two inmates who reflect on their past crimes thanks to drug-induced trips in a state-of-the-art penitentiary, run by visionary scientist Steve Abnesti (Chris Hemsworth).
Joseph Kosinski directs the Netflix film, premiering June 17.
The official synopsis teases a cat and mouse game as Hemsworth instructs prisoners to wear devices that administer dosages of experimental drugs, in exchange for reduced sentences. There are no bars, no cells, or orange jumpsuits in this revolutionary prison called Spiderhead. Instead, “incarcerated volunteers” are free…with certain boundaries. What is free will if one man has control over all minds and bodies?

Exclusive: Paramount+ Australia drama Last King of the Cross has added more cast with the likes of 300: Rise of an Empire’s Callan Mulvey joining previously-announced Ian McShane and Lincoln Younes.
Tess Haubrich (Spiderhead, Alien: Covenant), Claude Jabbour, Maria Tran (Truy Sat, Echo 8), Matt Nable (Riddick, Bikie Wars: Brothers In Arms) and Damian Walshe-Howling have also boarded the 10-parter, which represents one of Paramount+’s biggest international bets as it expands non-u.S. footprint.
Inspired by John Ibrahim’s best-selling autobiography, Last King of The Cross (10×60) is an operatic story of two brothers, Sam and John Ibrahim, who organize the street but lose each other in their ascent to power. The serialized drama tracks Ibrahim’s rise from a poverty-stricken immigrant with no education, no money and no prospects to Australia’s most infamous nightclub mogul in Sydney’s Kings Cross – a mini-Atlantic City,...

A prison that encourages drug use? Well, that just might have to be the stuff of fiction…for now.
Netflix has adapted George Saunders’ New Yorker short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” about two inmates (played by Jurnee Smollett and Miles Teller) who grapple with their past crimes while living in a state-of-the-art penitentiary run by a brilliant visionary (Chris Hemsworth) who experiments on inmates with psychedelic drugs.
“Spiderhead” premieres June 17 on the streamer.
The tradeoff for being a test subject is a commuted prison sentence, but when the open-concept prison is challenged, the experiments start to push the limits of free will. The psychological thriller is directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by producer Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
Director Kosinski revealed that the pop classic soundtrack, with tracks including Thomas Dolby’s “She Blinded Me With Science” and Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams,” came to him while at the dentist.

“Treadstone,” which begins in East Berlin in 1973 and zooms ahead to multiple locations in the present day, is, we’re told in its credits, “based on an organization from the Bourne series of novels by Robert Ludlum.” The description seems apt, in its clunky way. The Treadstone organization, which trains people to be supersoldiers and to keep their tactical knowledge subconsciously buried, is an element of Jason Bourne’s story now surgically cut off from the context and narrative richness of a good novel or film. And “Treadstone” feels, too, based on an organization and not a novel or film in its rigorous movement between plotlines, something that comes to feel less like narrative balance and more like mandated check-ins on a show that hasn’t yet decided what it wants to be about.
These plotlines are generally similar enough: A person, somewhere, comes to realize the powers they contain within them,...

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s Nekrotronic opened in the Us last weekend as a multi-platform release.
Momentum Pictures launched the sci-fi horror comedy starring Monica Bellucci, Ben O’Toole, David Wenham, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich and Bob Epine Savea in cinemas in 10 cities and on VOD and digital HD.
The eOne-owned distributor did not share box office figures, which are typically modest for day-and-date releases. The benefit of the theatrical exposure is that the reviews and publicity give the film a profile which pays off in ancillary revenues.
The director trimmed five minutes of exposition scenes after the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, resulting in more favourable reviews, particularly from genre websites.

USA Network has released the first trailer for their upcoming Bourne spinoff series Treadstone, and it actually looks like it’s going to be an action-packed series. There are some brutal looking fight sequences teased in this first trailer.
The ten-episode series was created by Tim Kring (Heroes), and it “explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Operation Treadstone — a covert program that uses behavior-modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins.” The first season will follow sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions. They are part of a Treadstone program called “Cicada”.
When talking about the series, executive producer Ben Smith, who also served as producer of Jason Bourne and The Bourne Legacy, told Entertainment Weekly:
“These Cicadas have very different trajectories upon finding themselves ‘awakened’ over a decade after volunteering for...

Howard North (Ben O'Toole) has a shitty job working for the family sanitation business. One day and his partner Rangi (Bob Savea) are called into the city to do one more job at the end of a long shift. Rangi has downloaded the latest mobile game where you catch ghosts with your phone. Little do they know that an evil demon, Finnigen (Monica Belluci), is using the app to download demons into human hosts, gathering enough souls to achieve immortality. But Luther (Dave Beamish) and his daughters Molly (Caroline Ford) and Torquel (Tess Haubrich), a trio of badass demon hunters called Nekromancers, know evil is a brewing and come across Howard after Finnigen sends a demon to kill him. Why? Turns out Howard is a...

USA has released the trailer for its “Bourne” franchise spinoff series, “Treadstone,” and we quickly learn that a legion of “sleeper agents” are waking up to discover that they’ve become superhuman assassins.
Several well-choreographed fight sequences follow, which you can watch in the action-packed 45-second trailer above.
A TV spinoff of Universal’s “Bourne” film franchise that starred Matt Damon, “Treadstone” will explore the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Treadstone — a covert operation that uses behavior modification protocol to turn its agents into nearly unstoppable superhuman assassins. The first season of “Treadstone” follows sleeper agents across the globe, as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions.

Coming from writer and director Kiah Roache-Turner, I was very much looking forward to new Australian horror comedy Nekrotronic. His previous movie Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was a fantastic all action kick up the ass that the zombie genre needed, so a new movie from him about demons sounded even more intriguing. And we’ve had to wait five long years for it!
It would be too simple to say this is a movie about ghosts. Even if you opened that up a little and said it was a ‘supernatural’ movie, that would be too simple. Because this involves demons, the Internet, zombies (kind of), possession and yes, ghosts.
Our lead character – Howie (Ben O’Toole) – discovers that he is part...

From Guerrila Films and Hopscotch Features, directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, debuted in 2018 Canada during the Toronto International Film Festival.
This is a B movie by even the most generous standards, but like it’s predecessor, Wyrmwood, it’s a great one, depending upon how much you like these kinds of movies. While Wyrmwood took on the zombie apocalypse, Nekrotronic takes on demons, demonic possession, and the dangers of cell phone life. Movies out of Australia always seem to have a better sense of humor about these things than the stock American films (with Zombieland being a notable exception). The cast handles their roles with appropriate amounts of gravity and incredulity. The plot, in a nutshell, is about Howard North, a sewage maintenance worker who by chance finds out his true identity in the middle of an attempt by demons to gain dominion over the world by...
