Chicago – Kinetic. Frenetic. Chaotic. Live! Those are just some words to describe the Saturday Night Live origin story “Saturday Night.” Director Jason Reitman has infused this nearly real time tale of the struggle to get the first episode of SNL with an energy that grabs your attention and never lets go. That takes some doing when we all know the ending. SNL would not only make it onto American airwaves, but it would become an improbable television institution and comedy touchstone, now celebrating its 50th season.

Saturday Night Live has long been known for its stars’ impressions of everyone from current politicians like Kamala Harris to historical figures like Vincent Price. Saturday Night, the movie set in the moments before its series premiere, isn’t aiming for verisimilitude on that level: the actors might be playing real-life people, but they’re also creating characters. The object isn’t an SNL, or even MADtv-level impersonation, and the performances shouldn’t really be judged on that basis.
So consider the ranking below — focused solely on the actors playing the show’s original seven cast members, known as the Not Ready for Primetime Players — purely a novelty, and don’t use it to fill out your ballot when it’s time to vote for the Oscars.
Warning: Contains moderate spoilers for Saturday Night.

For his latest nonfiction role, Gabriel Labelle had a rare peek inside his character’s world.
The Saturday Night star recently recalled his visit to 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where he saw a Saturday Night Live taping and met creator Lorne Michaels while portraying him in the film, which premieres nationwide on Oct. 11 following a limited release.
“Our first two days of shooting were in New York, just to shoot outside of 30 Rock, and Lorne was super cool and invited us to watch the Josh Brolin episode live,” he told IndieWire. “And so a handful of us, those who live in New York and then those who were just in New York to shoot regardless, we were able to go and check it out. It was really great.
“Lorne was there, and I actually got to speak with him briefly after the show. We didn’t say too much to each other.

“Saturday Night Live’s” 50th season got off to a good start this past weekend.
Though Jean Smart (“Hacks”) and Jelly Roll were the host and musical guest, respectively, the real stars of “SNL” Episode #1865 were the new character assignments ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
Former “SNL” cast member (1986-1993) Dana Carvey is our absent-minded (and just generally absent) outgoing commander-in-chief Joe Biden, Maya Rudolph is of course back as Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, Andy Samberg returned to Studio 8H as her husband — the second gentleman who could become the first gentleman come January — Doug Emhoff, standup comedian Jim Gaffigan as her running mate Tim Walz, Bowen Yang as the Republican VP candidate Jd Vance, and of course James Austin Johnson as former president Donald Trump.
The September 28 season premiere landed 5.3 million viewers, the most for a season premiere episode since 2020, when Chris Rock opened the season as host.

When I first heard about the premise of Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” — the entire film takes place in the 90 minutes leading up to the late-night comedy landmark’s first episode in 1975 — I confess that I found the idea to be a head-scratcher. Sure, it seemed like there would be a backstage let’s-put-on-a-show “What can go wrong? Everything can go wrong!” real-time frenetic bustle to the thing. And that sounded like fun.
More to the point, though: The show that came to be called “Saturday Night Live” — in the first season, it was just called “Saturday Night” — didn’t come together overnight, or in 90 minutes. A universe of pitching and planning and casting and writing, along with an infinite number of decisions large and small, went into the formation of a revolutionary new television comedy spirit and form. How was “Saturday Night” created? How was it dreamed up? How did it all come together?...

Columbia Pictures’ Saturday Night from Jason Reitman debuted at $265k, a great $53k per theater that’s the second-best limited opening of the year, and the best since June when Kinds Of Kindness also opened in 5 theaters (to a $75k PTA). It’s been a long a slightly dower wait for something to pop.
Saturday Night made $108K on Friday, $88K on Saturday and a projected $69K on Sunday in LA and New York. Expands Oct. 4 before opening wide on Oct 11 and looks well set up for a nice theatrical run with strong reviews and word of mouth since premiering at Telluride and Toronto.

Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night has earned rave reviews (including from us) from the festival circuit and is now poised to hit theaters. It opens today in limited release before expanding nationwide on October 11th, which actually marks the 49th anniversary of the first-ever episode of Saturday Night Live. The movie documents the frantic ninety-minute lead-up to the show’s premiere, depicting how it all very nearly went off the rails for a young Lorne Michaels, who’s played here by The Fabelmans star Gabriel Labelle.
While the film was playing at TIFF (Toronto International Film Fest), we had a chance to sit down and chat with most of the young cast playing all of the various SNL legends. In addition to Gabriel Labelle, we spoke to rising star Rachel Sennott, who plays SNL writer Rose Shuster, Dylan O’Brien, who makes for a surprisingly uncanny Dan Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith,...

Since November is considered the start of the holiday movie season, October continues what was once a generally slow fall month for movies, but in recent years, one that has become as much about releasing prestige Oscar fodder as it is about big budget genre fare. The big question this month might be which of the two super-villain sequels will do better, plus there’s also a bunch of scary stuff, including two anticipated sequels to horror hits. On top of that, there are a bunch of festival favorites and potential Oscar contenders as well. Read on for Gold Derby’s October 2024 box office preview.

Indie film distributor Gravitas Ventures has secured U.S. and Canadian rights to “Between The Beats,” a feature documentary chronicling San Francisco’s early 1990s rave scene and its lasting impact on the Bay Area.
Directed by Martin O’Brien and produced by O’Brien and Mike Koeppel, the film features prominent figures from the era, including Brian Behlendorf, DJ Harvey, DJ Dan and DJ Doc Martin. It examines the DIY ethos and psychedelic community spirit that defined the scene.
The documentary explores how the all-night electronic music dance parties attracted diverse crowds and became catalysts for many attendees who later became significant players in Silicon Valley, global dance music and activism.
O’Brien, who was involved in creating the San Francisco rave scene, said: “The film was made to take viewers on a journey back to an early ’90s music scene that has since grown into the hugely popular Edm/electronica phenomenon across the globe.

Back in October of 2021, we heard that M. That movie, which now has the shorter title Caddo Lake, will be making its way out into the world next month, as it’s set to be released through the Max streaming service on October 10th… and following a teaser trailer that we shared earlier this month, a full trailer for Caddo Lake has now dropped online and can be seen in the embed above.

Max has released the trailer and poster for its original film Caddo Lake, which will debut on the streaming service on Thursday, October 10, 2024. The movie comes from writer-directors Celine Held and Logan George and producer M. Night Shyamalan.
When an eight-year-old girl mysteriously vanishes, a series of past deaths and disappearances start to link together, forever altering a broken family’s history.
The cast includes Dylan O’Brien, Eliza Scanlen, Diana Hopper, Caroline Falk, and Sam Hennings, with Eric Lange and Lauren Ambrose.
The inspiration for Caddo Lake was sparked after filmmakers Celine Held and Logan George came across a photograph of the real Caddo Lake online, leading to many visits to the cypress forest that rests on the border of Texas and Louisiana. The film was shot in late 2021 and 2022 in and around Karnak, Texas.
The movie was produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Ashwin Rajan, Kara Durrett and Josh Godfrey.

Max has debuted the full official trailer for the horror thriller film Caddo Lake, inspired by the real Caddo Lake that rests on the border of Texas and Louisiana. Dylan O’Brien has admitted his audition for ‘Frozen II’ was "really bad".The 33-year-old actor recalled trying out for the 2019 Disney sequel but left the casting director disappointed when she found out that he couldn't sing to the standard required for the part.During an appearance on ‘Late Night with Seth Myers’, O’Brien said: "This poor woman. I remember, actually — this is a specific detail — she asked me, painfully, if I could get to the chorus because she needed to see if I had a certain range. [I was] swimming in the first verse a little bit [and then] went higher ... it was really bad. I knew. She knew. It’s okay."When she said to me, ‘Okay, okay’… She said two ‘okays.’ I’ll never forget it."And then she said, ‘Thank you for coming in. I think we’d probably need a bit of a stronger singer.’ and I was already just nodding,...

What do young adult novel adaptations, post-apocalyptic movies, and films involving shadowy corporations messing around unscrupulously have in common? For one thing, they're all a dime a dozen. For another, they're all aspects of the trilogy of films adapted from "The Maze Runner," a series of novels by author James Dashner.
Like so much YA fiction from the '00s, Dasher's novels gained a passionately loyal fan following, leading to 20th Century Fox becoming interested in developing them for the big screen in the hope that the studio would have its very own "Hunger Games." The parallels between both franchises are certainly there on the surface: preteen-to-older-teen heroes being forced to participate in deadly encounters while fighting the scourge of authoritarianism. However, where "Hunger Games" and its films are far more politically and philosophically-minded, "The Maze Runner" goes in a much more genre flick direction. It's one of the...

Dylan O’Brien is looking back at his audition for Frozen 2, which didn’t necessarily go as planned.
The Saturday Night actor recently made an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where the host asked him about his failed audition for the 2019 animated sequel, which saw Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel return as sisters Anna and Elsa, respectively.
O’Brien said he didn’t go into the audition with high hopes of landing the role “because I knew that I probably wasn’t going to get it.” The actor didn’t disclose which character he auditioned for.
“They’re looking for multitalented, multi-hyphenate people who can act and sing,” he told Seth Meyers of the musical film. “And I didn’t check, to be honest, probably either.”
The Teen Wolf alum acknowledged that he “can’t sing,” but decided to audition because he doesn’t “always feel like a real actor.

One of the biggest concerns fans likely have about Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night Live biopic is the casting. After all, it’s easy to hire an actor to play Napoleon or Abraham Lincoln because none of us grew up watching Lincoln on late-night television. Saturday Night, on the other hand, had the daunting task of finding actors to play comic performers whose faces and voices have been burned into our psyches over the past several decades.
While the movie certainly has some issues, the cast isn’t one of them. Most of the actors succeed at embodying their real-life counterparts without falling into the trap of doing a broad impersonation. One of the best of the bunch is Dylan O’Brien, who plays Dan Aykroyd back in the days when he was just an unknown performer who still kept all his theories about erotic ghost encounters to himself.

While we can’t easily ask the cast of the original Saturday Night Live about the show’s all-time greatest sketches, People did the next best thing, getting the skinny from the cast of the new movie, Saturday Night. With 50 years of comedy to choose from, the actors playing the Not Ready for Primetime Players didn’t choose a single sketch from the early days, instead opting for these more contemporary bits…
Gabriel Labelle (Lorne Michaels)
Labelle went Season 44 for his favorite sketch of all time. “I really love (when) Adam Driver comes in for career day, and he’s this really old man, this oil man, and Pete Davidson is his son, and it’s just hysterical.”
Dylan O’Brien (Dan Aykroyd)
O’Brien agreed that Driver is an all-time great, but his pick for best-ever went to Ryan Gosling’s “Santa Baby” sketch with Vanessa Bayer. “They basically get kinky for Santa.

A film about the creation of Saturday Night Live seems incredibly indulgent on paper. Still, in the hands of a filmmaker like Jason Reitman, whose father had such a connection to people from SNL, we could rely on it at least being sincere. While Saturday Night is certainly an exercise in style over substance, it is well-made and well-performed enough to win viewers over.
Saturday Night Review
Saturday Night takes audiences behind the scenes of the first-ever episode of Saturday Night Live, recorded on October 11, 1975, as creator Lorne Michaels struggles to make sure everything in the soon-to-be legendary sketch comedy show goes off without a hitch. The movie’s conceit is that it plays out in real time, following the final hour and a half before the show goes live, creating an incredibly immersive experience.
Because of its real-time structure, Saturday Night turns into something resembling a race-against-the-clock thriller. Even...

Plot: In the ninety minutes before the live airing of the first episode of Saturday Night Live, a young Lorne Michaels (Gabriel Labelle) desperately tries to keep NBC from pulling the plug while dealing with a cast, writers and crew in open rebellion.
Review: Comedy would be very different nowadays if not for Saturday Night Live‘s impact. Most noteworthy comedy film stars of the last four decades emerged from their ranks, and nearly fifty years since its premiere, it remains as vital as ever. Yet, the making of the show itself had become an almost mythological tale, with it a known fact that the young Lorne Michaels had to overcome overwhelming odds to make the show in the first place.
What Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night does is that it distills most of the big challenges Michaels had to overcome into one ninety-minute period. It’s a conceit that...

"It's ridiculous, frankly, that a studio head, Emma Watts of Fox at the time, saw my little animated short, which was really all I had done and said, 'Here is $24 million, go make a movie.'" Those are the words of director Wes Ball speaking with DiscussingFilm in 2020. The movie in question is 2014's "The Maze Runner." While the final budget was closer to $34 million, the astonishing point remains the same. Yes, Ball getting to direct the film based on the strength of his short "Ruin" is surprising. Far more surprising? That he made a straight-up YA blockbuster for less than half what it cost to make "The Hunger Games."
Historical context is important here. In 2012, "The Hunger Games" hit it big pulling in $678 million worldwide,...

The golden age of young adult dystopian films is already behind us, but some are still attempting to change that. Take, for instance, Joey King’s new Netflix movie. Based on the novel by Scott Westerfeld, Uglies revolves around a future post-apocalyptic dystopian society where everyone is compelled to look pretty.

Back in October of 2021, we heard that M. Night Shyamalan was producing the thriller The Vanishings at Caddo Lake, which was being directed by the duo of Celine Held and Logan George – who made their feature directorial debut with the 2020 drama Topside and went on to direct episodes of Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series Servant. That movie, which now has the shorter title Caddo Lake, will be making its way out into the world next month, as it’s set to be released through the Max streaming service on October 10th… and with that date right around the corner, a teaser trailer for Caddo Lake has been unveiled. You can watch it in the embed above.

In 2008, with two lauded features already under his belt (“Thank You for Smoking” and “Juno”), Jason Reitman took a break from one of his professional dreams (be a filmmaker) to fulfill another (be a writer on “Saturday Night Live”). For one week, the writer/director joined the crew of the venerated live sketch comedy show (it was the Ashton Kutcher-hosted episode), an experience he likens to joining the Los Angeles Lakers for a game.
Like most comedy wonks, Reitman had grown up revering “Saturday Night Live,” an affection he channels for his latest, “Saturday Night,” which he also wrote with Gil Kenan. Set on October 11, 1975, the film follows the wild, rag-tag original cast and crew as they attempt to launch the very first episode of the NBC series.

TIFF isn’t a festival known for its standing ovations, but it’s arguable that tonight’s Canadian premiere of Sony’s behind-the-scenes SNL movie Saturday Night came close with arguably the most rapturous response here at the 49th edition, which included the audience clapping rhythmically through the end-credits.
Said one industry insider not connected to the pic, “I won’t be surprised if it wins the Audience Award” –a historical bellwether for Oscar winners.
A multitude of the cast from the Jason Reitman-directed pic were in tow at the Royal Alexandra Theatre including Nicholas Braun (who plays Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson), J.K. Starring The Fabelmans breakout Gabriel Labelle as the show’s famed producer, Lorne Michaels, the film reportedly revolves around the 90 minutes before the first broadcast of Michaels’ comedy darling, Saturday Night Live.
The cast for this one is something to behold. As well as the aformentioned Gabriel Labelle, we get Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd,...

Lamorne Morris went against the better wishes of “Saturday Night” director Jason Reitman when meeting with original “Saturday Night Live” cast member Garrett Morris, whom he plays in the upcoming movie about the origins of the famed sketch comedy show.
You see, Reitman wasn’t keen on the film’s sprawling ensemble — Gabriel Labelle plays Lorne Michaels, Rachel Sennott plays writer Rosie Shuster, Cory Michael Smith plays Chevy Chase, Ella Hunt plays Gilda Radner and Dylan O’Brien plays Dan Aykroyd — interacting with their on-screen counterparts prior to production. “Saturday Night,” which premieres on Tuesday at the Toronto Film Festival, takes place entirely on the night of the first “SNL” episode.
“Garrett was going through similar things that I find myself going through in my career, so it was easy to relate to that ‘fish out of water’ feeling,” he said. “So, I wanted to make sure that that’s actually what Garrett was feeling.

“Saturday Night” is ready to go live, and the cast of the film embodied “controlled chaos” when they visited TheWrap’s 2024 TIFF Studio sponsored by Moët & Chandon and Boss Design.
The new film from Jason Reitman, which takes place, almost in real time, in the 90 minutes that led to the first taping of “Saturday Night Live” almost 50 years ago, just played the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie is electric and unstoppable, with Reitman’s camera (manned by Eric Steelberg) zooming around the halls of 30 Rockefeller Center as actors refuse to sign contracts, NBC executives nervously pace and pretty much everything that could go wrong does go wrong.
Armed with a murderer’s row of ridiculously talented young actors, Reitman’s film captures the spirit of chaos that it took to bring one of the most iconic TV series of all time to life.
And Reitman told TheWrap editor...

With Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, Sony released a new trailer for the real-time comedy thriller on Monday, touting the strong early reviews for the project after its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month.
Based on original interviews Reitman and co-writer Gil Kenan conducted with several original “Saturday Night Live” cast members and crew personnel, “Saturday Night” unfolds 90 minutes before the first broadcast of the now-legendary sketch comedy series. “The Fabelmans” breakout Gabriel Labelle stars as “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels, with an all-star cast of up-and-coming talent playing several other real-life contributors, including Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, and Cooper Hoffman as Dick Ebersol.
The film will debut in limited release on September 27 before a wider rollout through October 11 – the 49th anniversary of the first-ever “SNL” broadcast.

A festival like Toronto is the place to take the pulse of the state of film, where artists of the filmed medium put their hearts on display, share what’s on their minds. From what I can tell their minds are in turmoil and their hearts are breaking.
As for women, whose voices and performances are sometimes second thoughts, they are angry and unafraid to show it, whether in Marielle Heller’s “Nightbitch” starring a feral Amy Adams battling her own resentment over caring for her adorable toddler; to “The Assessment” starring Elizabeth Olson and Alicia Vikander by director Fleur Fortune, whose bleak view of maternity in an authoritarian future reflects fears over continuity of the human race.
But first, the joy.
David Gordon Green’s “Nutcrackers,” literally sings with a hokey sort of family, farm and fraternal happiness. The director lately known for horror (“The Exorcist: Believer” and “Halloween...
