Clark is from a multi-ethnic background. She was born in London in 1985 to parents of Indian and Nigerian heritage, although she also possesses English and Irish ancestry. Her parents split when she was a child, after which she was raised in a liberal household by her single mother.

Her big break came at the age of 16 after she won £5,000 in a national modeling competition. Before she knew it she was working the runways of Milan and New York, initially during the summer break from her studies as an undergraduate law student at the London School Of Economics. But as modeling took off she decided to give it total focus, and so she dropped out and moved to New York, where she ended up fronting a number of ad campaigns, from Adidas to Alexander McQueen.
