Darren Aronofsky and Mark Heyman have worked together several times over the years. Heyman was Aronofsky’s assistant when he made The Fountain, then he was the co-producer on The Wrestler, a writer on Black Swan, and an executive producer on Mother! So now that Heyman is set to make his feature directorial debut with the horror film Pendulum, it’s good to see that Aronofsky is there to back him up, producing the film through his company Protozoa. Back in October, we heard that Joseph Gordon-Levitt of The Dark Knight Rises and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F had signed on to star in the film. Now, Deadline reports that Phoebe Dynevor of Bridgerton and Fair Play has joined Gordon-Levitt in the cast.

Idw Entertainment is teaming up with Steven Schneider and Roy Lee’s Spooky Pictures (Late Night with the Devil) to adapt the horror comic Dungeon by Scott Snyder and Hayden Sherman, THR reports today.
The serial killer tale ran as a five-issue comic miniseries in 2023 and 2024.
Dungeon begins “when a family moves from the Big Apple to upstate New York to escape the hustle and bustle. However, their father’s dream of a quiet rural life is shattered when he discovers a dungeon underneath their land, filled with torture devices, weapons, and a threatening message on the wall that reads, ‘Tell No One.’ The discovery sets up a paranoid serial kidnapping mystery where no one, not even the father’s child, is safe, and not even the FBI agent assigned to the case can help.”
Schneider and Lee will produce the adaptation along with Daniel Kendrick of Idw Entertainment, the screen arm of Idw Publishing.

Spooky Pictures, the company run by Steven Schneider and Roy Lee, has teamed up with Idw Entertainment to adapt Dungeon, the horror comic by Scott Snyder and Hayden Sherman.
Schneider and Lee will produce the adaptation along with Daniel Kendrick of Idw Entertainment, the screen arm of Idw Publishing.
The option deal comes as Snyder and Sherman have become among the top commodities in the comics field. Snyder, a longtime comics author, is currently writing Absolute Batman for DC, with that comic’s launch becoming the biggest-selling title of 2024. Sherman is illustrating Absolute Wonder Woman, which was also a massive launch that went to multiple printings.

Plenty of great horror movies would have been even more frightening, unnerving, and effective had they received the strict adult-only R-rating. While PG-13 movies have the potential to explore some gruesome and terrifying concepts, filmmakers are limited in how much gore they show or how depraved the psychological torment their characters experience can be. Although all these horror movies had their scary moments, an R rating would have allowed them to take extra steps in the realm of overwhelming terror.
While it’s understandable that film studios often wish to pursue a PG-13 rating wherever possible, as this allows for tickets to be purchased by more consumers, horror movies are often more effective with an R-rating. Whether it's through more intense visuals or a deeper adult-oriented exploration of characters, R-rated horrors represent some of the best scary movies ever made. Although all these horror movies have value, it’s hard...

While it's wonderful that the horror genre is constantly trying out new ideas and concepts, sometimes all you need is a classic creature feature. After all, It's films like these that first put the genre on the map. Nothing scares as consistently as putting a cast of characters up against a horrific beast thirsty for their blood. It's a premise that audiences find in Rob Savage's The Boogeyman, an adaptation of the short story by Stephen King with a script from Heretic directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The 2023 movie follows the Harper family reeling from not only the death of their mother and wife but also the shadowy beast that has begun to stalk their every move.

[This story contains some mild spoilers for Heretic.]
The heavens have smiled on Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ Heretic.
Critics and audiences are of the belief that their fourth outing as writer-directors is their finest work yet, and it’s been a long time coming considering the Iowa natives’ thought-provoking religious horror movie was conceived before they broke out as the co-writers and originators of A Quiet Place (2018). The film is largely a three-hander between two Mormon missionaries, Sisters Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Paxton (Chloe East), and a potential convert named Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). Upon entering the Englishman’s home in order to peddle the wares of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the two missionaries soon realize they’ve been ensnared in a terrifying game of wits that is meant to test and contradict their faith.

This first premiered at the 2024 Popcorn Frights Film Festival this year and will be out on VOD to watch at home in December. "Vacation is all about escape." This isn't a particularity original concept - there's also Deadstream which this film seems to be borrowing from, not to mention Rob Savage's Dashcam, and other horror that is about people going into a haunted house that they think isn't...

About a year and half ago, it was announced that The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman will be producing a remake of the 1956 horror film The Mole People (watch it Here) for Universal Pictures… and while we wait for further updates on that project, Deadline has revealed that there’s a different “mole people” project coming our way from Rob Savage, the director of the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman and the screen life horror films Host and Dashcam. This one is called Molepeople and has Anthony Ramos (Twisters) and Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) attached to star in it.
Described as telling the story of one man’s nightmarish descent into the abandoned tunnels beneath the streets of New York City, where a twisted society lurks, Molepeople brings to mind not only The Mole People but also the 1984 film C.H.U.D., which involved people living in the tunnels beneath NYC, and the 1972 film Death Line (a.

The director of Host and Stephen King’s The Boogeyman, Rob Savage is next directing a horror movie titled Molepeople, which seems to be inspired by the 1956 classic The Mole People.
Deadline reports that Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) will star in Rob Savage’s Molepeople, which is set in New York City.
The film is being pitched as “one man’s nightmarish descent into the abandoned tunnels beneath the streets of New York City, where a twisted society lurks.”
Nathan Elston (Succession) wrote the screenplay, with Raphael Margules and J.D Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures (Woman of the Hour) producing alongside Rough House Pictures (Halloween).
Embankment’s Hugo Grumbar said, “Molepeople fuels a modern audience with shocks and thrills, captivating, heightened feelings of fear. Rob’s direction is stylish; BoulderLight’s understanding of modern audiences is unmatched – and together the filmmakers are best in class.

With the viral success of Milk & Serial, the found footage hit about a prank-based web series, and the recent social media-related thriller Skincare, it is clear that the internet is still a source of fear for film fans. This trend is not new, but it is still ramping up as screen life continues to consume real life especially since the dawn of the pandemic. Recent years have served up horror hits about bloggers, vloggers, influencers, and other attention-seekers trying to connect in all the wrong ways.
There isn't enough room on the internet to list every web-based horror movie, but these titles belong at the top of the leaderboard. Their stories give new meaning to the term "doomscrolling" as their chronically online characters do anything and everything for likes and subscribers. Folks, we've made it: we're officially in September, which means it's now Spooky Season. Sure, you could argue that the Halloween festivities shouldn't start until October, but I say: nuts to that! Summer is over (more or less), the temperatures are dropping (sometimes), and it's time to start watching horror movies left and right. If you're anything like me, you know that any time of the year is a good time for horror — I'll watch a horror movie in January, I'm so crazy! — but there's something extra special about embracing the genre as we get closer and closer to Halloween. It's almost as if we're given an excuse to cut loose and watch as many scary movies as we possibly can. Tis this season, after all.
With all that in mind, for this month's horror streaming column I've decided to bring out the big guns: Stephen King movies. It's probably...

Stephen King movies have been a thing for nearly as long as the man has been writing best-selling novels. From "Carrie" the first feature film based on one of King's works, to the recent ill-fated remake of "Children of the Corn," these adaptations have run the gamut. King doesn't always throw his weight behind the projects and he famously was not a fan of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining." But when King is a fan of a movie based on his work, he's happy to say so. That was the case with 2023's "The Boogeyman," a movie King vocally got behind. It turns out, the author's praise actually helped the cast and crew during production.

In this day and age, there are more films being made than ever before. It's easy to miss movies, so many audiences turn to sites like Rotten Tomatoes for guidance, though that may not necessarily have an impact on the box office. There's a common misconception about how that site works, though. The score given to each film isn't a representation of how good the movie is; instead, it represents the percentage of critics who would recommend the film overall. In other words, if half of all surveyed critics loved a movie and half of them hated it, the movie would clock in at 50% Fresh. That may not seem like a great score, but all it indicates is that a movie is polarizing; you might find yourself on either side of that divide.

Over the last few years, a handful of directors have been redefining the horror genre, pouring fresh ideas and experiences into how the category can be defined. Projects like Parker Finn’s Smile, David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows, Rob Savage’s adaptation of The Boogeyman, and Ari Aster’s Hereditary tackled complex emotional trauma by embodying it in monsters and other supernatural elements. In 2022, Zach Cregger completely knocked it out of the park with his solo screenwriting and directorial debut, Barbarian, giving fans yet another boundary-pushing film with heaps of subtext lying beneath the surface.

If you didn't catch Rob Savage’s The Boogeyman in theaters, then you're in luck, as the adaptation of Stephen King’s beloved short story is available right now from the comfort of your living room — but you may want to turn a light on first. While horror fiends looking for well-executed scares will be well-served by The Boogeyman, some people might be left wondering what the movie’s ending means. That’s because, after everything is said and done, there’s still an ambiguous scene teasing the franchise potential of The Boogeyman.

While the industry as a whole felt more downs than ups this year, horror films continued to be a consistent attraction overall. While the studio hits were not quite as splashy as they were 2022, the year saw the birth of new franchises (M3GAN, The Pope’s Exorcist, Talk to Me, Thanksgiving), the revitalization of the reliable favorites (Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, The Nun II), and reminded us just how essential writers, actors, and the all the creatives both in front of the camera and behind it are to making any of this not only work, but sell.
As for the big horror trend this year, controversy was thy name. While there were a few entries critics and audiences were able to rally around, most of them drew conflicting opinions — which this list is surely proof of.

We’ve all had imaginary friends, right? Well, probably not ones like Chauncey! Take a look at the Imaginary trailer here.
Jason Blum’s horror studio Blumhouse have been raking in the profits with Five Nights At Freddy’s, which has exceeded all expectations when it comes to dominating the box office. Horror has always been a particularly profitable genre and Blumhouse are now looking for an early 2024 hit with Imaginary.
Take a look at the first, spooky trailer below.
Starring Jurassic World: Dominion’s DeWanda Wise, Imaginary asks the terrifying question: are our imaginary friends just imaginary, or something a little more sinister? Maybe they murder people. Wouldn’t that be positively ghoulish?
Wise plays Jessica, who moves her family to her childhood home. Jessica’s stepdaughter Alice finds a talking teddy bear in the basement named Chauncey. Chauncey makes her do things, including showing a nail in her arm.

The Boogeyman is yet another Stephen King adaptation, reframing the 1973 short story as an extended exploration of grief -- while still being plenty horrifying. Still reeling from the death of their mother, Sadie and Sawyer struggle to get their therapist father Will to acknowledge his own pain. But they find themselves forced together if they have any chance of surviving a mysterious and monstrous force lurking in the shadows.
As much a character study as a creature feature, The Boogeyman excels when it leans into its grounded elements -- which makes sense given that the filmmakers behind-the-scenes were keenly focused on finding that balance. During an interview with Cbr now that The Boogeyman is available on DVD and Blu-ray, the film's director Rob Savage discussed the interplay between grief and terror, the importance of improvisation, and carrying on the Stephen King legacy.

Director Rob Savage is enthusiastic about the idea of adapting "The Boogeyman" into a haunted house experience, seeing it as a new and interactive way to scare people. Universal Studios has found great success with their Halloween Horror Nights, featuring mazes based on popular horror franchises. Disney has also dabbled in Halloween experiences, but they lean towards a more family-friendly environment. Disney, after acquiring 20th Century Fox, now has the rights to several horror franchises like "Alien," "Predator," and the recent "Hellraiser" reboot. There is potential for these properties to be adapted into terrifying attractions if Disney recognizes the opportunity.

And, if you're a horror buff, it's quite likely that one of your favorite watches during these troubled times was a small, inventive movie called Host. Now, part of the team behind this creative enterprise has gotten back together for a Netflix short titled Flashback.

Jed Shepherd, the writer of Shudder sensation Host as well as Rob Savage’s follow-up Dashcam, sat in the director’s chair for Flashback, a new horror short coming to Netflix.
“I’m very excited to announce Flashback, which I wrote/directed for Netflix,” Shepherd tweets this week. “It stars some of the loveliest people I know and is out This Friday, October 20.”
Shepherd has also shared a teaser trailer for Flashback, which stars Jemma Moore (Host) as a yoga teacher. Set in South London, the short features “time travel and monsters.”
Of particular note, Fangoria brings us the word that mega popular artist Trevor Henderson (Mayfair Watcher’s Society) worked with Shepherd on the short’s monster design!
In Flashback, “a yoga teacher’s life flashes before her eyes during a home invasion. Before time runs out she must use the flashback to race back in time and save the man she loves.

I love everything about October, especially in a year that offers a bonus Friday on the 13th in 2023. So, Friday the 13th and Halloween this year make the spooky season even more special. And one of my favorite things to do, when the ghosts and ghouls frequent your local Target aisle, is check out the local haunts. Here in Los Angeles, you have many horror events to choose from. The beauty of Halloween however, is that most cities and towns across America all have a few choice spots to get creeped out at. As a service to all our readers, please leave suggestions in the comment section below that may lead to haunting holiday discoveries for others
The Los Angeles Haunted Hayride in Griffith Park is one such place. Strangely, I had never been before. However, I’d heard it was a must if you are in the Los Angeles area.

There are a lot of Stephen King adaptations out in the world; some are fantastic, others are… not so great. One that lands in the not-so-great category is The Langoliers, the 1995 miniseries based on the novella by Stephen King. However, just because one adaptation failed doesn’t mean somebody can’t try again, and The Boogeyman director Rob Savage has previously expressed a desire to tackle a remake of The Langoliers.

The Boogeyman still stands as one of my favorite horror films of the year. It’s a classic tale anchored by some phenomenal performances from both Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Blair. But it’s really the technical side that impresses the most, with its interesting usage of light and fantastic cinematography. So I couldn’t have been more grateful to pick director Rob Savage’s brain about all things Boogeyman. He couldn’t have been nicer, giving great insight into some of the best scenes of the movie. We talked about the possibility of a sequel (and who I want to see get their comeuppance), as well as Disney’s refusal of the usage of a toy lightsaber ended up being a blessing in disguise. This was a great chat that you won’t want to miss!

The Boogeyman is an adaptation of a Stephen King short story about the Harper family and the demonic entity that infects their house, feeding on their grief and causing fear and turmoil. The film is directed by Rob Savage and features a talented cast, including Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, and Vivien Lyra Blair. Rob Savage reveals plans for a sequel to The Boogeyman, which will follow a different perspective and intersect with the story of the Harpers, but not focus on the monster or the family directly.
The Boogeyman, an adaptation of the Stephen King short story of the same name, follows the Harper family in the wake of tragedy. Sadie and her younger sister Sawyer are grieving their mother as their father, Will, buries himself in his work as a therapist. When a new patient arrives at the house without an appointment, desperate for help, Will is hesitant but agrees.

Rob Savage makes scary movies.
After smashing his way into the horror scene with the pandemic chiller "Host" and the divisive horror comedy "Dashcam," Savage made his first major studio movie earlier this year with "The Boogeyman," an adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name. And while it was a sleeper hit at the box office, the most exciting aspect of the film was that it proved Savage could take on a much bigger movie without losing his edge. This is a frightening film, one coated in dread and literal darkness, with a story just as interested in its shattered characters as its unsettling monster. Some horror directors abandon their spark when they work on a bigger, more expensive studio project. It looks like Savage thrives.
