Playing Billy the Kid and young Coriolanus Snow, Tom Blyth finds similarities in their complex relationships to morality. Despite existing in different genres, these characters offer enough material for Blyth to build unique identities. Blyth sees Billy as a reluctant leader while Snow aspires to be president, providing contrasting motivations for each character.
British actor Tom Blyth is best known for two recent, high-profile roles: as Billy the Kid in the MGM+ series of the same name, and as a young Coriolanus Snow in 2023's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. In a new interview with MovieWeb's Will Sayre, the 29-year-old revealed that, despite the roles existing in two very different genres, the characters have some interesting similarities.

Billy the Kid is back, and this time his journey is depicted not within a two-hour movie, but rather on the small screen. The hit MGM+ series kicked off in 2022, and Part 1 of the second season concluded back in November. Now, Part 2 kicks off this weekend, with Billy finding himself caught up in the infamous Lincoln County War (for those who've been following along and/or know their history), all the while butting heads with ongoing rival Jesse Evans (the terrific Daniel Webber) and struggling to maintain his love affair with Dulcinea (Nuria Vega).
There are a lot of moving parts, and Billy didn't exactly want to become a rebellious leader but sometimes, we have to fill shoes we don't exactly desire in order to do what's right. And in this case, Billy is out for blood, seeking to avenge his fallen mentor,...

Every week there are large numbers of indie and specialty releases vying for attention. It’s impossible to do them all, so when the option of reviewing Nowhere Special was placed in front of me I resisted at first after discovering it actually premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. That’s right, four years ago. I had to wonder what could possibly be good about a film delayed for that long in terms of getting a U.S. release date? Finally caving in to the persistent requests by the distributor and its passionate PR team, I decided to check it out.
What I discovered was not that this was some sort of troubled film, not even close. Instead I found a spare but moving drama, powered by a remarkable lead performance, that is all about life and death and all things in between. At its heart it is also an...

This film originally premiered in 2020 at the Venice Film Festival and ended up opening in most of Europe in 2021 already. It also played at the Zurich, Hamburg, Warsaw, and Istanbul Film Festivals, among others, and is finally getting an actual US release later in April. A single father is forced into a heartbreaking situation in this moving film. James Norton stars as John, a window cleaner who has dedicated his life to raising his 4-year-old son, Michael, whose mother abandoned him. When John is diagnosed with terminal cancer, with a prognosis of only a few months left to live, he searches for a new family for his son ahead of his passing. He struggles with the...

Billy the Kid will be back on TV screens very soon.
MGM+ this week that Billy the Kid Season 2 will debut on Sunday, October 15, at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.
There is a little bit of a catch:
Four episodes of the season will air this year, with the final four being held until 2024.
A reason for the decision has not been revealed, but there's a good chance it has something to do with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Billy the Kid, the moody new drama from Vikings creator Michael Hirst, digs deep into the life of 19th Century cowboy and gunslinger Billy the Kid (Tom Blyth), painting a nuanced portrait of the notorious outlaw. There’s plenty of Old West action in the Epix series, but we also see Billy reading from Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself; and caring for his loving mother (Eileen O’Higgins). It’s clear that the brutal frontier environment — and endless grief and deep poverty it brought his family — transformed Billy from the innocent son of Irish immigrants to a legendary criminal. “We think we know him as this sociopathic murderer who was good on a gun and good with a horse. But he’s someone who’s been hardened day after day by constant loss,” says Blyth, who connected with his character by taking a road trip through Billy’s old stomping grounds.

“Vikings” creator Michael Hirst takes on his childhood hero in “Billy the Kid.” Starring Tom Blyth as the legendary gunslinger, born Henry McCarty, the eight-episode series – co-produced by Epix Studios and MGM International Television Productions, in association with Viaplay – is currently screening at French TV festival Series Mania ahead of its April 24 premiere.
“It’s probably true that you shouldn’t meet your heroes; I have met a couple of mine and it didn’t go particularly well. But what I want more than anything else is for people to love this Billy,” Hirst tells Variety in Lille.
“Michael [Wright, president of Epix] allowed me to tell a story I wanted to tell, which doesn’t happen very often. This show is saying to people: ‘You think you know Billy the Kid because you have heard his name.’ You think he is a bit of a rough guy, a gunman and a killer.

New neighbors can be a source of great anxiety. Maybe they’ll be extremely kind and friendly, coming over to introduce themselves and strike up a friendship that lasts years. Perhaps they’ll be quiet and you won’t even know they’re there. But they could be absolute menaces, loudly causing disturbances all night long and creating tension that makes you uncomfortable in your own home. What if, though, their daughter is the reincarnation of your tragically deceased child?
That’s the dilemma plaguing Laura (Andrea Riseborough) in Here Before, the feature debut of writer-director Stacey Gregg. While she will forever mourn the tragic loss of her young daughter, Laura has managed to create a daily routine with her husband (Jonjo O’Neill) and son (Jesse Frazer-Filler), moving through life in the wake of unimaginable loss. When Megan (Niamh Dornan) moves in next door with her parents (Eileen O’Higgins and Martin McCann), though,...

With a limited theatrical release on February 11th and a VOD release on February 15th, here's a look at the trailer for Here Before, directed by Stacey Gregg and starring Andrea Riseborough:
"Andrea Riseborough (Black Mirror) is spellbinding as the distraught mother, haunted by the death of her young daughter, who develops an all-consuming obsession over the neighbor's girl who she believes is the reincarnation of her child.
When new neighbors move in, Laura (Riseborough) is awakened from her mundane daily routine of errands and exercise. She becomes transfixed by their young daughter, Megan (astonishing newcomer Niamh Dornan). Megan’s parents Marie and Chris, initially don’t seem to mind as Laura offers Megan a ride home from school and an invitation to dinner.
Her husband Brendon grows concerned as his wife’s infatuation with the young girl spirals into increasingly erratic behavior. Eerily, Megan seemingly knows far too...

Last week, Irish filmmaker Stacey Gregg celebrated the world premiere of Here Before, her psychological thriller, at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival. Starring Andrea Riseborough, Niamh Dornan, Jonjo O’Neill, Eileen O’Higgins, and Lewis McAskie, the film follows a mother named Laura (Riseborough), who becomes increasingly convinced that the little girl (Dornan) who moves in next door is the reincarnation of her own daughter who died years prior, which puts a great deal of strain on both families. But Laura’s obsession grows deeper the more time she spends with the girl, and from there, horrifying truths are revealed that forever change the dynamics of both families caught in the middle of her grief and unwavering maternal instincts.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Gregg about Here Before, and during the interview, she discussed her unusual approach to grief in this story, the surprise she felt when Riseborough agreed to do the project,...

By the time Stacey Gregg’s cofounding gaslighting thriller “Here Before” zips its way into an overstuffed final act, audiences will likely have spent some time wondering how this could have been better. Perhaps a perspective shift, or if Gregg’s script started a year earlier or a month later. Instead, we’re left to engage with what is on the screen: a great Andrea Riseborough performance (as if she knows how to turn in anything less) and an undercooked story that often pursues the least interesting possibilities.
Set in an anonymous Northern Ireland suburb, “Here Before” Laura (Riseborough) and her family endured a terrible tragedy many years before, but they’re not really thinking about their lost daughter Josie when a new clan moves in next door, complete with the precocious Megan (Niamh Dornan). Megan is cute and sweet, and she gravitates straight toward Laura, much to the chagrin...

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for the SXSW Film Festival once again, but here we are. For the 2021 iteration of the fest, SXSW is going virtual, which gives more people the opportunity to get to experience their brilliant lineup of films this year. As someone who is already well into my SXSW viewings for this year, I can confidently say that this might be SXSW’s best slate of Midnighters from top to bottom, and a few other genre and genre-adjacent films that are premiering in other sections are very much worth your time as well.
So, if you’re looking to check out some excellent horror and sci-fi cinema during this year’s SXSW from the comfort of your own home, here are 15 different projects you’ll definitely want to make time for. Oh, and because I included both How it Ends and Violation during my Sundance 2021 preview,...

Documentary music films about the careers of singer-songwriter Charli Xcx and late rock legend Tom Petty will headline this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, as the Austin fest has unveiled its full 2021 slate.
Charli Xcx’s “Alone Together” will be the closing night film about how she made an album over the course of 40 days in quarantine, while “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free” will be the centerpiece film that uncovers new 16mm footage of Petty at work on his 1994 album “Wildflowers.” Rounding out the headliners for SXSW is the previously announced opening night film, “Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil,” a YouTube Originals documentary about the aftermath of the actress and singer’s near-fatal overdose in 2018.
This year’s SXSW, now in its 28th year, is virtual and online after 2020’s festival was one of the first major events to be canceled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups). Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Three years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series recently, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But there has been an uptick as of late, with 33 such shows submitted in 2018, 35 last year and 41 for this awards cycle. Even so, with five nominees for Best Limited Series, the odds for each of the entries detailed below is pretty good.

We’ve conducted many interviews via Zoom across the past few months, but few have been as enjoyable as Eileen O’Higgins, the affable Northern Irish actress, who takes a starring role in the brilliant new series Dead Still, where she stars alongside Michael Smiley and Kerr Logan.
We spoke to O’Higgins on a video call, and discussed in great depth the nuanced and subversive role of Nancy Vickers and how she went about accessing the character, and balancing the show’s comedy with its dark morbidity. O’Higgins comes across as being a very humble individual, and talks about her joy in collaborating with such talented actors – not just on this show, but with the likes of Saoirse Ronan, who she’s a very close friend with. Finally, she comments on her experiences going back home for lockdown, and why she accidentally forgot to pack enough clothes for the duration…...

Saoirse Ronan was positively glowing as she took to the stage to accept the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy for Lady Bird. It was her first win at the awards, but her third nomination - quite an achievement for someone who's still only 23 years old. Giving a shout-out to her mom, who was apparently watching via FaceTime from the audience, Saoirse went on to thank the film's cast and crew before giving a shout-out to her best friend Eileen O'Higgins (her date for the night), as well as her fellow nominee Margot Robbie, with whom she's recently been filming Mary, Queen of Scots. Backstage, Saoirse giggled with James Franco, cuddled up to her costars (including the adorable Timothée Chalamet), and proudly posed with her new trophy. She later spoke to the press about her career thus far, saying, "I've been very, very lucky that from an early age,...
