MGM+ has officially renewed the Western drama Billy the Kid for a third – and – final season. The series will conclude with eight episodes arriving in 2025.

“In season two, Michael Hirst, Donald De Line, along with Tom Blyth and the rest of our talented cast, captivated audiences with the dramatic events leading to the infamous Lincoln County War, during which Billy is struggling to hang on to both his soul and the love of his life,” stated Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “In season three, we are excited to bring the naturally cinematic story of one of American history’s most fascinating, and often misunderstood, characters to its conclusion, as only MGM+ can.”

The series, created by Michael Hirst (Vikings), ranks in the top three of all original shows on the network.

Playing Billy the Kid and young Coriolanus Snow, Tom Blyth finds similarities in their complex relationships to morality. Despite existing in different genres, these characters offer enough material for Blyth to build unique identities. Blyth sees Billy as a reluctant leader while Snow aspires to be president, providing contrasting motivations for each character.

British actor Tom Blyth is best known for two recent, high-profile roles: as Billy the Kid in the MGM+ series of the same name, and as a young Coriolanus Snow in 2023's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. In a new interview with MovieWeb's Will Sayre, the 29-year-old revealed that, despite the roles existing in two very different genres, the characters have some interesting similarities.

Billy the Kid is back, and this time his journey is depicted not within a two-hour movie, but rather on the small screen. The hit MGM+ series kicked off in 2022, and Part 1 of the second season concluded back in November. Billy the Kid, the gripping historical drama from MGM+, is set to premiere the second part of its much-anticipated second season on June 2 at 9:00 p.m. Et/Pt. Billy the Kid? More like Billy the Crisis Averter!

MGM+ on Wednesday unveiled the key art and official trailer for Billy the Kid Season 2, and it promises to be filled with action.

Seriously, we need the second season right now.

"The epic romantic adventure inspired by the life of America's most infamous outlaw continues in Season Two, as Billy and his allies square off against his oldest friend Jesse Evans and the corrupt powers of the Santa Fe Ring," the streaming service teases.

"When shots are fired, the conflict erupts into the bloody Lincoln County War. Amidst the fighting, Billy will struggle to hang onto his soul—and to the love of his life."

"The other side has the advantage," Billy declares in the action-packed trailer.

"You're farmers," he adds.

"Jesse Evans and his gang are all practiced killers."

Billy the Kid has its second season premiere date set. MGM+ has released a trailer teasing what is ahead in the Western series. For season two, the eight-episode season will be divided into two parts, with part one arriving in October and part two coming in 2024.

MGM+ this week that Billy the Kid Season 2 will debut on Sunday, October 15, at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.

There is a little bit of a catch:

Four episodes of the season will air this year, with the final four being held until 2024.

A reason for the decision has not been revealed, but there's a good chance it has something to do with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

The network, formerly known as Epix, is returning to the Wild West for a sophomore run of the series, which stars Tom Blyth as the eponymous character.

Inspired by the life of America’s most infamous outlaw, the show launched in April 2022.

Billy the Kid, the moody new drama from Vikings creator Michael Hirst, digs deep into the life of 19th Century cowboy and gunslinger Billy the Kid (Tom Blyth), painting a nuanced portrait of the notorious outlaw. There’s plenty of Old West action in the Epix series, but we also see Billy reading from Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself; and caring for his loving mother (Eileen O’Higgins). It’s clear that the brutal frontier environment — and endless grief and deep poverty it brought his family — transformed Billy from the innocent son of Irish immigrants to a legendary criminal. “We think we know him as this sociopathic murderer who was good on a gun and good with a horse. But he’s someone who’s been hardened day after day by constant loss,” says Blyth, who connected with his character by taking a road trip through Billy’s old stomping grounds.

“Vikings” creator Michael Hirst takes on his childhood hero in “Billy the Kid.” Starring Tom Blyth as the legendary gunslinger, born Henry McCarty, the eight-episode series – co-produced by Epix Studios and MGM International Television Productions, in association with Viaplay – is currently screening at French TV festival Series Mania ahead of its April 24 premiere.

“It’s probably true that you shouldn’t meet your heroes; I have met a couple of mine and it didn’t go particularly well. But what I want more than anything else is for people to love this Billy,” Hirst tells Variety in Lille.

“Michael [Wright, president of Epix] allowed me to tell a story I wanted to tell, which doesn’t happen very often. This show is saying to people: ‘You think you know Billy the Kid because you have heard his name.’ You think he is a bit of a rough guy, a gunman and a killer.

Saban Films has landed rights to “Here Before,” a psychological thriller starring Andrea Riseborough.

When the deal closes, Saban Films will distribute the movie in North America, South Africa and its global partner Defiant Screen Entertainment will handle Australia and New Zealand.

First-time feature filmmaker Stacey Gregg wrote and directed “Here Before,” which had its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. Along with Riseborough, the cast includes Jonjo O’Neill (“The Fall”), Martin McCann (“Calibre”), Eileen O’Higgins (“Brooklyn”) and newcomer Niamh Dornan.

In “Here Before,” Riseborough plays Laura, a grieving mother who becomes emotionally affected by the presence of her new neighbors’ young daughter. The logline reads: “When a new family moves in next door, their young daughter, Megan, quickly captivates Laura, stirring up painful memories of her own daughter who died several years previously. Last week, Irish filmmaker Stacey Gregg celebrated the world premiere of Here Before, her psychological thriller, at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival. Starring Andrea Riseborough, Niamh Dornan, Jonjo O’Neill, Eileen O’Higgins, and Lewis McAskie, the film follows a mother named Laura (Riseborough), who becomes increasingly convinced that the little girl (Dornan) who moves in next door is the reincarnation of her own daughter who died years prior, which puts a great deal of strain on both families. But Laura’s obsession grows deeper the more time she spends with the girl, and from there, horrifying truths are revealed that forever change the dynamics of both families caught in the middle of her grief and unwavering maternal instincts.

By the time Stacey Gregg’s cofounding gaslighting thriller “Here Before” zips its way into an overstuffed final act, audiences will likely have spent some time wondering how this could have been better. Documentary music films about the careers of singer-songwriter Charli Xcx and late rock legend Tom Petty will headline this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, as the Austin fest has unveiled its full 2021 slate.

Charli Xcx’s “Alone Together” will be the closing night film about how she made an album over the course of 40 days in quarantine, while “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free” will be the centerpiece film that uncovers new 16mm footage of Petty at work on his 1994 album “Wildflowers.” Rounding out the headliners for SXSW is the previously announced opening night film, “Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil,” a YouTube Originals documentary about the aftermath of the actress and singer’s near-fatal overdose in 2018.

This year’s SXSW, now in its 28th year, is virtual and online after 2020’s festival was one of the first major events to be canceled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Shoring up at Sundance with five films in the past two editions Andrea Riseborough could once again be linked to the festival with Stacey Gregg‘s directorial debut. After about a decade of screenwriting, Gregg went into production in November of 2019 in Belfast for Here Before and the supporting cast includes Jonjo O’Neill, Martin McCann, Eileen O’Higgins, and newbie Niamh Dornan.

Zdf Enterprises, the highly active international production and sales arm of German public broadcaster Zdf, has sealed a major multi-territory deal with Viasat World’s Epic Drama channel on “Dead Still,” continuing the macabre dramedic mystery series’ rollout in much of the world.

Backed by U.S. SVOD service Acorn TV and Irish state TV service Rte, set in 1880 Dublin and starring Michael Smiley (“Luther”), Kerr Logan (“Game of Thrones”) and Eileen O’Higgins (“Mary Queen of Scots”), “Dead Still” will have its pay TV premiere on Oct. 10 on Epic Drama when it will be made available across Central and Eastern Europe, Cis territories, the Baltic States, Malta and Turkey.

Epic Drama’s past lineup has featured some of the biggest international period dramas of the last decade, such as “Versailles,” “World on Fire” and “Das Boot.”

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups). Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Three years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.

While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series recently, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But there has been an uptick as of late, with 33 such shows submitted in 2018, 35 last year and 41 for this awards cycle. Even so, with five nominees for Best Limited Series, the odds for each of the entries detailed below is pretty good.

We’ve conducted many interviews via Zoom across the past few months, but few have been as enjoyable as Eileen O’Higgins, the affable Northern Irish actress, who takes a starring role in the brilliant new series Dead Still, where she stars alongside Michael Smiley and Kerr Logan.

We spoke to O’Higgins on a video call, and discussed in great depth the nuanced and subversive role of Nancy Vickers and how she went about accessing the character, and balancing the show’s comedy with its dark morbidity. O’Higgins comes across as being a very humble individual, and talks about her joy in collaborating with such talented actors – not just on this show, but with the likes of Saoirse Ronan, who she’s a very close friend with. Finally, she comments on her experiences going back home for lockdown, and why she accidentally forgot to pack enough clothes for the duration…...

Andrea Riseborough will star in “Here Before,” a Belfast-set psychological thriller from Stacey Gregg.

The movie is Gregg’s feature directorial debut. She recently co-directed “Inside Bitch” for the Royal Court Theatre in London. Her TV writing credits include Sky’s “Riviera” and Netflix’s “KAOs.”

Riseborough will play a bereaved mother in “Here Before.” After new neighbors move in, events unfold and she starts to question her reality. Jonjo O’Neill (“The Fall”), Martin McCann (“Calibre”), and Eileen O’Higgins (“Brooklyn”) will also star.

Production is underway in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Julia Godzinskaya and Sophie Vickers of Rooks Nest Entertainment produce. BBC Films, Pia Pressure and Northern Ireland Screen are financing the picture, which was developed with Northern Ireland Screen before further development through the iFeatures scheme run by Creative England and supported by the BFI.

Jonjo O’Neill (The Fall), Martin McCann (Calibre) and Eileen O’Higgins (Brooklyn) round out the cast on the production which will shoot in and around Belfast for four weeks.

After new neighbours move in next door, a bereaved mother, played by Riseborough, begins to question her reality in the psychological thriller written and directed by Belfast born and based Gregg.

Most recently, Gregg co-directed stage play Inside Bitch for the Royal Court Theatre and Clean Break. Her writing credits include Sophia Al-Maria’s series Little Birds currently shooting with Juno Temple and Riviera, both for Sky Atlantic; as well as The Innocents and on the new Charlie Covell series Kaos for Netflix.
