Fans have fallen in love with Oscar Isaac in blockbuster franchises like Star Wars and Dune, but the versatile actor turned in one of his best performances in an underrated A24 gangster film from 2014. In A Most Violent Year, the leading man plays an ambitious immigrant who clings to his moral compass while breaking into a mob-infested industry. This dark, harrowing drama is a hidden gem of the gangster genre — and there could be sequels in the future.
J.C. Chandor's name may be familiar to MCU fans for his recent Kraven the Hunter movie, but he previously made award-winning dramas like A Most Violent Year. This gangster film is a masterpiece of simmering tension and moral turmoil that foregoes gory gunfights in favor of blistering suspense and intrigue. If rumors from Oscar Isaac's costar Jessica Chastain prove true, the story may expand into a trilogy.

Even people who don't watch Severanceknow that it's one of the most immaculately crafted shows being released right now. Do any casual scrolling through the cinephile corners of social media, and you'll come across screenshots from any given episode that flexes its formal precision and delicate chiaroscuro lighting. That's due in large part to cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné, who has shot 14 of Severance's episodes, including the pilot, making her the primary architect of the show's visual language. Her involvement in the show was a long time coming, as Severance's director/executive producer/biggest Knicks fan Ben Stiller said on the Severance podcast that he first noticed her talents when watching a 2017 film called Sweet Virginia, a crime thriller starring Jon Bernthaland Christopher Abbott.

Kraven the Hunter is part of Sony's Spider-Man Universe. The film was the third addition to the Ssu in 2024 and didn't live up to its potential, becoming a major flop after poor initial reviews.
Luckily, streaming services prove there's an audience for every film and Kraven the Hunter has found its prey. Since its disastrous release in theaters, the movie, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular character, has found a lot of success online. Following its release on Netflix, Kraven the Hunter has become a hit, Tudum reveals.
The movie premiered on Netflix on Mar. 13, and for the week between Mar. 10 and 16, the movie climbed up the charts globally. It received 7.1 million views and 15 million hours viewed in just three days on the platform. The numbers become even more impressive, as the film reached the third spot globally and is available only in one territory — the U.S.

After such high-profile flops as 2010’s The Wolfman and 2017’s The Mummy, the latter of which failed to launch Universal Pictures’s intended Dark Universe franchise, came a rare standout amid the studio’s ongoing project of rebooting its classic horror movies: Leigh Wannell’s The Invisible Man, which reframed the 1933 film (based on H.G. Wells’s novel) as an extreme case of stalking and gaslighting. While this ostensibly feminist spin on the story earned the film some appreciation, its pointed topicality was less compelling than Wannell’s masterful orchestration of suspense and, during the middle stretch, use of a single location.
Now, Wannell has been given the reins to Wolf Man, nominally based on the 1941 version with Lon Chaney Jr. that, along with its sequels, proved to be one of the most influential entries in Universal’s monster cycle. As with The Invisible Man, there isn’t much tying...

Here we go again…again. Well, maybe. As much fervor as there is for another “Mamma Mia!” installment, the film series’ main star, Amanda Seyfried knows that things in this business take a long time and there are certain considerations studios must undertake, especially in regards to building on IP. There are also certain considerations Seyfried has in mind too.
“Show me the money!” Seyfried said with a laugh during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. She added that producer Judy Craymer is “working on it,” but she believes Universal only likes to work on musical at a time, as the first “Wicked” was stalled due to “Mamma Mia! Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, “Poor Things” is a madcap romp through a woman’s journey of self-discovery. This marks the filmmaker’s third collaboration with Emma Stone after she starred in “The Favourite” and a silent short, “Bleat.” The film bagged the prestigious Golden Lion at the 2023 Venice Film Festival and garnered Stone a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and her second Oscar. Lanthimos assembles rock-solid creative teams in every department to present a wild, spunky, and dazzlingly inventive vision.
An adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel, the film is a revisionist spin on the Frankenstein template where its heroine, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), gradually discovers morality, consciousness, and what constitutes humanity. The film traces her growth from being a fully grown woman with the intelligence of a baby to a complex, sentient individual who is finally enlightened by all the baggage and despair of humanity.

Blumhouse’s reinvention of Wolf Man is set to tear onto 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD on 21st April 2025, bringing Leigh Whannell’s modern take on the iconic Universal monster straight to home audiences. Dubbed “a frightening and heartrending new horror take” by Total Film, and compared to The Shining and The Howling by The Telegraph this gripping new vision blends psychological dread with brutal creature horror. It even managed to score four stars in our review upon release.
Directed by The Invisible Man’s Leigh Whannell, Wolf Man follows Blake (Christopher Abbott), a man seeking a fresh start as he moves his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) back to his childhood home in Oregon. Their attempt at a quiet new life is shattered by a savage animal attack, forcing the family to barricade themselves inside as something lurks in the shadows. As the night drags on,...

It takes a lot for a film to disappoint me, but a surefire way is when a movie has a promising setup that doesn't match its execution. The most recent case of this happening is Wolf Man, the Leigh Whannell-directed remake of Universal's classic horror film. The cast included talented names like Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, and Whannell had already proved that he could do a great update of a classic horror icon with 2020's The Invisible Man. But poor reviews combined with an abysmal box office gross is nothing to howl at the moon over. What makes Wolf Man's failure sting even more is that it started out as something genuinely interesting — when it had a different star attached. None other than Ryan Gosling would have become the titular Wolf Man, but a number of shakeups led to the version that eventually hit theaters. So,...

‘Wolf Man’ Whimpers Past a Disappointing Final Box Office Milestone as It Prepares To Leave Theaters

When it was reported that Blumhouse’s Wolf Man carried a modest budget of only $25 million, it didn’t seem like too tall a task for the film to become a box office success, but after the film debuted with “rotten” scores of 50% from critics and 56% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, things began looking grim quickly. Wolf Man, which stars Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, slashed into theaters with only $10 million at the box office over the weekend of January 17, barely even cracking the top three while falling behind One of Them Days and Mufasa: The Lion King. Now, as Wolf Man prepares to exit theaters, it has reached its final box office milestone of $20 million domestically, and it will fall painfully short of reaching $35 million at the global box office, currently sitting at $34.4 million.

Amanda Seyfried is singing the praises of just how “crazy” — in a good way — Mona Fastvold’s upcoming “Ann Lee” musical is. Seyfried stars in the title role of the historical film, which centers on the religious leader Ann Lee, who founded the Shaker Movement in the late 1770s. Lee’s followers deemed her the female Jesus Christ, and her worshippers prayed through song and dance, hence her story getting the musical biopic treatment.
The film is co-written by Fastvold and her “The Brutalist” collaborator and real-life partner Brady Corbet. The pair are currently nominated for the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for their work on the film, which is also nominated for Best Picture and in a slew of other categories.

“Wolf Man” is a 2025 film directed by Leigh Whannell, featuring the likes of Christopher Abbott as Blake, Julia Garner as Charlotte, Matilda Firth as Ginger, Sam Jaeger as Grady, and more. The film follows the story of a family, who travels to Oregon to tie loose ends but are attacked by a strange creature resembling a man.
“Wolf Man” opens with a message stating that in 1995, a hiker went missing in the mountains of central Oregon. It’s fair to say Wolf Man was a lackluster addition to the werewolf genre. It whimpers through its runtime thanks to plain characters and uninspired performances. However, Leigh Whannell made one creative decision that felt fresh and innovative — the transformation sequences.Wolf Man ensured the audience was fully immersed in Blake’s (Christopher Abbott) transition by placing the camera in his field of vision and showing how he was experiencing the world, changing the sound and the color. Unfortunately, the effect was not utilized to its full potential, particularly towards the movie’s climax, where it looked cheap and gimmicky. However, the idea of seeing body horror through the eyes of the victim is something truly unique, and it is a shame that Wolf Man’s shortcomings mean it likely won’t be used again.

Before Wolf Man hit theaters, Universal’s theme park may have accidentally spoiled the creature’s look. Photos of a masked figure at the attraction spread online, leading many to believe this was the werewolf we’d see on screen.
It turns out those early glimpses weren’t far off. The masked version closely resembled the beast that attacks the main characters in Leigh Whannell’s film. But when Christopher Abbott’s character, Blake, finally transformed, he looked completely different from what people expected.
The final version of the monster, dubbed the ‘Hills Fever’ wolfman, quickly divided audiences. Many were put off by its almost hairless body, which looked more like a mutated human than a proper werewolf. Some viewers appreciated the fresh take, but others felt it strayed too far from the classic monster.
Concept artist Constantine Sekeris has been sharing alternate designs that didn’t make the cut.

In the build-up to Wolf Man's release, the design of the titular monster was seemingly unveiled when photos of a guy in a mask at Universal's theme park attraction found their way online.
Though this did turn out to be the basis for the werewolf that attacks our protagonists in Leigh Whannell's movie, the overall look came across a lot better on screen, and Blake (Christopher Abbott) ultimately transforms into a different beast altogether.
Even so, the "Hills Fever" wolfman's final design still proved to be highly divisive, and a lot of fans simply couldn't get on board with a near-hairless creature that looked far more man than wolf.
We've already seen some alternate creature designs from concept artist Constantine Sekeris, who has now taken to Instagram to share another early sketch. This take on the monster actually looks a little like the Wolfman from Monster Squad!

Irish sheep farming, deep-seated family tensions, and a brewing conflict between neighbors—sounds like the setup for a quiet indie drama. But in “Bring Them Down,” the upcoming revenge thriller from first-time director Chris Andrews, those elements fuel a gripping, morally complex battle of wills. In this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo sits down with actor Christopher Abbott to discuss leading the film, producing it, and why he was drawn to a story steeped in generational trauma and rural survival.

Christopher Andrews’s directorial debut tells an all-too-familiar Irish story about the dysfunctional relationship of rivaling farmers and the destruction that lies in their path as their feuds escalate. Featuring an excellent, albeit underused performance from Wolf Man’s Christopher Abbott alongside The Banshees of Inisherin’s Barry Keoghan, Bring Them Down’s dramatic storytelling will challenge audiences.
Michael (Abbott) is the last son of a family of sheepherders. His father (Colm Meany) is a curmudgeonly old man who abused Michael’s mother and perhaps indirectly led to her demise. Michael’s ex-girlfriend (Nora-Jane Noone) is married to a neighboring farmer, whose son (Keoghan) finds a fascination with Michael. The two begin a type of feud that slowly escalates to a violent and intense turn.

It’s only February, but 2025 is already shaping up as a breakthrough year for Christopher Abbott. His physically transformational turn in Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man marked the actor’s first time leading a studio film. Just as he contorted his body with prosthetics for Blumhouse’s modern monster update, Abbott ties himself into psychological knots within writer-director Christopher Andrews’s Bring Them Down.
Hearing Abbott sporting an Irish accent and speaking Gaelic may come as a shock to longtime fans of the actor. He was thrust into the public eye in the 2010s through New York’s independent filmmaking community, both on television with Lena Dunham’s Girls and on the big screen through scrappy independent work with the Borderline Films collective. Abbott’s simmering intensity, grounded in his naturalistic and instinctive acting style, routinely makes for the best part of whatever project he tackles. Whether dominating the screen...

Christopher Abbott and Barry Keoghan argue over sheep in Christopher Andrews’ thriller. Here’s our Bring Them Down review.
Christopher Abbott has had a busy few months with recent appearances in Kraven The Hunter and Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man. Writer-director Christopher Andrews’ Bring Them Down is a much smaller film than those, but has more power than the two aforementioned movies combined. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I watched it.
Abbott plays Michael, the last son of an Irish shepherding family. He’s weighed down by a car accident which killed his mother and injured his former girlfriend. He also looks after his ailing father. There’s constant competition and animosity between Michael’s family and the family next door, and when some of Michael’s sheep go missing and are found with their legs cut off, things quickly get out of hand.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Mubi releases the film Friday, February 7, 2025.
The question will likely prickle the audience of Chris Andrews’ feature directorial debut “Bring Them Down” early and often: When, exactly, were these people fucked? Pardon our language, but if you balk at the use of the f-word to classify the miserable, bloody, meaningless lives of a pair of Irish sheep farmers and everyone around them — people who are well and truly fucked — than Andrews’ dismal Irish feature is not at all for you. Fans of dramas so dark and bitter that they make the most screwed-up parts of the Bible look funny and frisky? They’ll likely spark to what Andrews is dishing out here, but some questionable storytelling conceits eventually dilute even that power.
Things are already fraught when the film opens, as an SUV goes careening down an otherwise quiet Irish lane.

Mubi has unveiled a new clip from “Bring Them Down,” starring Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan (“Saltburn”) and Christopher Abbott (“Poor Things”), ahead of its Feb. 7 theatrical release in the U.S., U.K., Mexico, Canada and Ireland.
The tense thriller, which marks the feature directorial debut of Christopher Andrews, follows two warring farming families in rural west Ireland. The story centers on Michael (Abbott), a reclusive farmer living with his ailing father Ray (Colm Meaney), whose ongoing conflict with rival farmer Gary (Paul Ready) and his unpredictable son Jack (Keoghan) escalates into a series of increasingly violent confrontations. The cast also includes Nora-Jane Noone (“The Magdalene Sisters”) as Caroline, Susan Lynch (“Ready Player One”) as Peggy, and Aaron Heffernan (“Brassic”) as Lee.

As improbable as it may seem, one of the best films out of South by Southwest last year was about rival sheep farmers in rural Ireland. It's also one of the most nuanced and provocative films about toxic masculinity in recent memory, and equally unsettling. Written and directed by Christopher Andrews (in his feature debut), Bring Them Down stars Christopher Abbott and Barry Keoghan as the sons of sheep farmers who stand to inherit their respective father's farms on either side of a shared hill.
When their long-simmering rivalry boils over, misunderstandings give way to misguided deeds and ill-conceived notions of revenge in a film that evokes the darkest of Joel and Ethan Coen's crime thrillers. Comparisons to the films of fellow Irishman Martin McDonagh seem inevitable, but Bring Them Down is bleaker and less sentimental than McDonagh's nastiest work.

Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man has landed a digital release date just weeks after making its theatrical debut. Curiously, not even a month has passed since Whannell's reboot hit theaters, and Universal Pictures has decided to digitally release the film tomorrow, February 4.
Whannell's Wolf Man reboot was released on January 17 to largely mixed reviews. The box office performance was not great, failing to reach the $30 million mark (it sits at $29.8 million at the time of writing) on a $25 million production budget. This is probably the reason why Universal execs have decided to give the film a digital release earlier than everyone imagined.

Leigh Whannell's "Wolf Man" may have been a box office disappointment, but that doesn't necessarily mean people aren't interested in watching it. Fortunately for folks who are waiting to experience the film at home, most movies' path from the big screen to home media is comparatively short in this day and age -- and "Wolf Man's" unfortunate fate as a box office flop means that it's going to be available for home viewing even sooner than you thought.

With Sundance wrapped up, much of February’s attention toward the world of cinema will be on Berlinale. This month certainly isn’t stacked for new releases, but there’s a handful of gems and highlights worth having on your radar.
11. Bring Them Down (Christopher Andrews; Feb. 7)
Premiering at TIFF last fall, the Barry Keoghan- and Christopher Abbott-led gritty revenge thriller Bring Them Down marks the directorial debut from Christopher Andrews. Christopher Schobert said in his TIFF review, “It’s occasionally compelling thanks to its haunting, almost otherworldly locations in Ireland. Mainly, though, what stands out are performances of the ever-intense Christopher Abbott, Nora-Jane Noone, and, most notably, Barry Keoghan. But the actors serve a drama that is relentlessly violent and thoroughly unpleasant. It’s a testament to these performers that they make so much of so little.”
10. Jazzy (Morrisa Maltz; Feb. 7)

This fervently acted Irish film about a dispute between farmers begins with some sheep rustling and ends in Peckinpah-esque violent horror
A tang of bad blood rises from this flawed revenge-feud drama set in the rural west of Ireland from first-time feature director Christopher Andrews, in which the audience might be shocked by male violence but are at the same time required to sympathise with the male characters’ inner wounded sensitivity. It’s strongly and fervently acted, but for me finally let down by a bizarre and almost farcical flourish of Peckinpah-esque violent horror, which undermines the accessible emotional reality of what has been happening, and which doesn’t quite do justice to the sustained effort required for a specific act of grotesque butchery.
The title refers at one level to a decision to bring livestock down from the grazing hillside to the fields, but also implies a terrible, willed catastrophe.

Set in rural west Ireland, writer-director Christopher Andrews’s pastoral thriller Bring Them Down features little in the way of spectacular set pieces. Nor does the film hinge on a classic battle between a hero and a villain. Its genre bona bides are mostly established by its tightly wound plot and characters whose psychologies have been warped in the conjunction of patriarchal traditions and the pressures of capitalism.
Ostensibly, Bring Them Down follows Michael (Christopher Abbot), the taciturn scion of a wealthy family that has herded sheep for centuries. His father, Ray (Colm Meaney), though immobilized by bad knees, still exercises the authority of a biblical patriarch. Michael’s childhood girlfriend, Caroline (Nora-Jane Noone)—having left him some 20 years before the present action, in the fallout from his mother’s death in a car accident, for which he was responsible—is now married to the spiteful and debt-burdened alcoholic Gary...
