Forster‘s novel “Howards End” written by Oscar-winner Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”) and directed by Hettie Macdonald. Music often provides the finishing touch for a limited series or TV movie, and this year’s crop contains a diverse range of sounds that enhance the stories.

Contemporary composer and arranger Nico Muhly, who moonlights in film, wrote his first TV score for Starz’s “Howards End,” based on the E.M. Forster novel. True to his classical roots, it has a chamber-music ambiance that emphasizes the story’s intimacy.

The biggest challenge, explains Muhly, involved the Schlegel sisters, played by Hayley Atwell and Philippa Coulthard: “They are slightly Bohemian, independent and learned, but there was a need to add a sense of yearning and poignancy to them,” he says. “I wanted the Wilcoxes’ music to be always slightly haunted by the music belonging to the first Mrs. Wilcox. Bast’s music was jagged and angular — stuck in an obsessive set of patterns.”

If “Counterpart” fans were excited about the news of James Cromwell joining the cast of Starz’s sci-fi espionage drama, it’s nothing compared to how series lead J.K. Simmons felt when he heard the news.

“I was so excited. As they were talking about casting, I was hoping it would be [Cromwell],” Simmons told Variety on the red carpet at the Starz Fyc event on Wednesday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. “I just finished shooting the first half of the season, basically all of my scenes with him. It was a great for a number of reasons because James is great, but also because he carried about 90 percent of the dialogue, so I was kind of just sitting there being a fan.”

The purported age difference between the two stretches credibility, but [Matthew] Macfayden — who is best known for playing Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright’s 2005 “Pride and Prejudice” — makes the most of silently checking a pocketwatch while smoking outdoors, and [Hayley] Atwell brings a self-conscious charm to Margaret’s somewhat tortured affections. If there were no Merchant Ivory film, Starz’s “Howards End” would be a more welcome adaptation. The four-part miniseries, an adaptation of E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel about class collision and national identity in turn-of-the-century England, is impeccably cast and studiously performed. But the bones of the production, adapted by prominent playwright Kenneth Lonergan and directed by Hettie Macdonald, lacks the impeccable grace and subtlety of both the earlier adaptation and the source material. Lonergan’s screenplay is so disinterested in logistics that it just skips them; especially towards the end of the four-parter, “Howards End” lets weeks, months, or years drop between scenes without even nodding to the audience. The aim is to raise the dramatic stakes, but combined with Macdonald’s lens — which knits together the story with a pleasant, too-romantic glow — what ends up happening is a messy smoothening of an intricate story. For fans of costume dramas, “Howards End” is like a quick hit of “Downton Abbey” cut with the cinematic beauty of any Keira Knightley flick. For everyone else, it’s even better.

The first thing you’ll notice about Kenneth Lonergan’s superb adaptation is its speed — which is an odd and exciting quality for a four-hour British period drama that begins with, ends on, and is titled after an old house. The focus may be a stationary locale, but the pace is aptly quick. Before you can you stop to think “Why do we need another adaptation of ‘Howards End’?”, 15 minutes have flown by and you’re already enraptured by the Wilcox and Schlegel families.

Credit goes to all the elements that make similar genre fare stand out — the costumes, performances, telling glances, and detailed sets — but what makes this Starz limited series feel all its own is a conscious dismissal of certain civilities.

They say TV makes your brain ooze out of your ears, but this April, viewers can learn a little something about an eclectic array of topics. New nonfiction offerings this month will shed a little light on Elvis Presley's inner life, whisk you on an odyssey through sci-fi with James Cameron and feature Wyatt Cenac fixing all of the world's pressing issues. Plus Al Pacino takes on Joe Paterno, Tracy Morgan makes a profane-as-fuck comeback and John Legend fulfills his destiny by taking up the mantle of a singing Jesus Christ.

Variety reports: “Annabelle: Creation,” which conjured $35 million in its opening to dominate an otherwise lackluster frame last weekend, will wind up the weekend with about $64 million in its first 10 days. The film is the fourth in New Line’s highly profitable “Conjuring” universe and should see the combined worldwide grosses hit the $1 billion mark this weekend, thanks to 2013’s “The Conjuring,” 2014’s “Annabelle,” 2016’s “The Conjuring 2,” and “Annabelle: Creation.” Next up is “The Nun,” starring Taissa Farmiga and Demian Bichir and due out July 13.

In his review, Michael Haffner says “it proudly stands next to The Conjuring films as delivering real scares. What helps with this is making the audience afraid of not just the doll, but of what other being is haunting the house as well as the always hidden mother. It’s a terrifying trifecta that fits perfectly into the ominous surroundings.

As expected, New Line's Conjuring spin-off dubbed Annabelle Creation took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $35 million. The low-budget spin-off has already doubled its $15 million budget, and it's potentially shaping up to be one of the most profitable movies this year. Other newcomers The Glass Castle and The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature both underperformed, leading to weak opening box office numbers.

Box Office Mojo reports that Annabelle: Creation debuted in 3,502 theaters, for an impressive $10,006 per-screen average, with The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature debuting in third place with $8.9 million, with a meager $2,232 per-screen average from 4,003 theaters, behind Dunkirk in second palace with $11.4 million. The Glass Castle opened in ninth place with $4.8 million, earning a $3,337 per-screen average from 1,461 theaters. David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation proves that history does, in fact, repeat itself – and not by following in John R. Leonetti’s footsteps (director of Annabelle). Sandberg takes a page out of Ouija: Origin Of Evil‘s playbook, going the period route to recalibrate via prequel beginnings. Warner Brothers trusted their up-and-coming horror workhorse to salvage Annabelle’s name, much like how Mike Flannagan made Ouija relevant again. In every sense of the phrase, Annabelle Creation is 2017’s Ouija: The Original Of Evil. Noticeably improved upon, wicked in haunts and smart to cast little Lulu Wilson (child actor from Ouija: Origin Of Evil). It ain’t October yet, but who says you can’t squeeze a few screams in before summer dries up?

Annabelle’s origin takes us to the Mullins residence, circa 1950. Samuel Mullins (Anthony Lapaglia), a retired toymaker, offers his roomy estate to a Catholic orphanage with no other options.

While Sony's The Dark Tower did managed to take home the box office crown in its opening weekend, it certainly wasn't a convincing win, just barely beating Dunkirk with $19.1 million, coming in under most expectations. This weekend, The Dark Tower box office prospects are looking even worse, facing a tough second weekend that brings in three vastly different movies to theaters, New Line's horror prequel Annabelle: Creation, the Lionsgate drama The Glass Castle and the Open Road Films animated sequel The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature. It seems like a one-week reign at the box office will be all for The Dark Tower, since we're predicting Annabelle: Creation will take the top spot with $40.2 million, easily besting The Dark Tower and the rest of the field.

Don't write this Annabelle: Creation film off because the first movie wasn't that good. That first Annabelle film was rushed into production to capitalize off the success of The Conjuring. But, this sequel is the real deal. This sequel looks like a great film that tells a great story, and I'm totally excited about seeing it! I've heard great things about this film from people who have seen it, and if you're a fan of horror films, you won't want to miss out on this one.

I'm a huge fan of The Conjuring films, but I didn't really care for the first Annabelle spinoff film. It was disappointing and I didn't think it was very good or very scary. But this sequel, Annabelle: Creation, actually looks like it could really be good and it could actually bring terror into people's lives! Maybe it's because it deals with orphan kids stuck in a house in the middle of nowhere being tormented by a haunted doll. To take things to another level of intensity, one of the main little girl characters has a handicap that prevents her from getting away fast when the demon comes after her. Here's the synopsis:

The trailer doesn’t take long before it delves straight into a dark and supernatural nightmare, After a couple loses their daughter after being hit by a car, her spirit roams their house. Soon realising the spirit wasn’t their daughter after it asked for permission to move into the doll, the spine-tingling, heart-stopping scares begin. The couple opens their own orphanage but soon regret their decision as things go bump in the night and one girl becomes horrifyingly possessed.

Nothing can prepare you for the next chapter in The Conjuring universe.
