To base a film on making philosophical ideas is a tricky thing. First it has to be aimed at a big enough audience who may not understand the concept, but then it could alienate the ones who truly understand it. The Philosophers is a movie that raises a few interesting questions, but proves in the end where true flaws are found.
When a philosophy teacher challenges his class of graduating seniors with choosing ten people who would survive in an underground shelter to repopulate the earth once an apocalypse hit it raises many questions. One of the most important one being just what influence the teacher himself is having.

Starz is looking for an Emmy breakthrough for its four-hour adaptation of E.M. Forster‘s novel “Howards End” written by Oscar-winner Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”) and directed by Hettie Macdonald. Atwell had some mighty shoes to fill playing headstrong Margaret Schlegel: the role brought Emma Thompson the Best Actress Oscar for the 1992 Merchant Ivory adaptation. “I know Em and spoke to her about it, and she was adamant … not to watch other people’s interpretations of the work you’re about to do,” Atwell explains. “You don’t want to get lost or confused impersonating someone else.” Atwell previously earned a Golden Globe nomination for her work in “The Pillars of the Earth...

Expect to see the Starz program “Howards End” reap a Best Limited Series Emmy nom on July 12, along with nominations across the board for its actors and below-the-line talent. The series debuted stateside in May, 26 years after the acclaimed 1992 film adaptation that garnered nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director (James Ivory) and won three including Best Actress for Emma Thompson.
Based on the acclaimed 1910 novel by E.M. Forster, this new spin on the timeless classic was adapted by Oscar champ Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”). It stars Hayley Atwell and Philippa Coulthard as the independent and unconventional Schlegel sisters navigating their way through turn-of-the-century England, whose lives become intertwined with the wealthy Wilcox family and the working-class Bast family. The series also stars Emmy winners Julia Ormond and Tracey Ullman, alongside Matthew Macfadyen, Joseph Quinn and Alex Lawther.

Music often provides the finishing touch for a limited series or TV movie, and this year’s crop contains a diverse range of sounds that enhance the stories.
Contemporary composer and arranger Nico Muhly, who moonlights in film, wrote his first TV score for Starz’s “Howards End,” based on the E.M. Forster novel. True to his classical roots, it has a chamber-music ambiance that emphasizes the story’s intimacy.
The biggest challenge, explains Muhly, involved the Schlegel sisters, played by Hayley Atwell and Philippa Coulthard: “They are slightly Bohemian, independent and learned, but there was a need to add a sense of yearning and poignancy to them,” he says. “I wanted the Wilcoxes’ music to be always slightly haunted by the music belonging to the first Mrs. Wilcox. Bast’s music was jagged and angular — stuck in an obsessive set of patterns.”

“We definitely all felt that we had a lot to live up to,” reveals Philippa Coulthard in our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above) about the BBC/Starz limited series “Howards End,” based on the acclaimed 1910 novel by E.M. Forster. “It’s a bit nerve-wracking to take on a role that has been done so brilliantly,” the actress admits about taking on a new spin on the novel and especially the Oscar-winning 1992 Merchant/Ivory film of the same name, acknowledging that “people cherish that adaptation.”
In this version adapted by Oscar champ Kenneth Lonergan (“Manchester by the Sea”), Coulthard plays Helen Schlegel alongside Hayley Atwell who plays her sister Margaret, two independent-minded sisters navigating their way through turn-of-the-century England, whose lives become intertwined with the wealthy Wilcox family and the working-class Bast family. Theater-bred UK producer Colin Callender stays ahead of the competition by mining the rich intersection of theater, film, and television. Back in 1983, he produced the Emmy-winning nine-hour miniseries of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s “The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby,” the first original program for Channel 4. He moved stateside in 1986 to shepherd and define the first decade of HBO Films, from Gus Van Sant’s Palme d’Or–winning “Elephant” to Mike Nichols’ “Angels in America,” starring Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, and Meryl Streep.
Callender has chased quality ever since, with such tony productions as “Wolf Hall”, Broadway’s “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” and this season’s limited-series Emmy-contending literary adaptations “Howards End” (BBC/Starz) and “Little Women” (BBC/Masterpiece Theater), both directed by women.
“I wanted to take the high road,” he said. “There is an audience hungry for it and not being served, and that only got more true.

If “Counterpart” fans were excited about the news of James Cromwell joining the cast of Starz’s sci-fi espionage drama, it’s nothing compared to how series lead J.K. Simmons felt when he heard the news.
“I was so excited. As they were talking about casting, I was hoping it would be [Cromwell],” Simmons told Variety on the red carpet at the Starz Fyc event on Wednesday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. “I just finished shooting the first half of the season, basically all of my scenes with him. It was a great for a number of reasons because James is great, but also because he carried about 90 percent of the dialogue, so I was kind of just sitting there being a fan.”

If there were no Merchant Ivory film, Starz’s “Howards End” would be a more welcome adaptation. The four-part miniseries, an adaptation of E.M. Forster’s 1910 novel about class collision and national identity in turn-of-the-century England, is impeccably cast and studiously performed. But the bones of the production, adapted by prominent playwright Kenneth Lonergan and directed by Hettie Macdonald, lacks the impeccable grace and subtlety of both the earlier adaptation and the source material. Lonergan’s screenplay is so disinterested in logistics that it just skips them; especially towards the end of the four-parter, “Howards End” lets weeks, months, or years drop between scenes without even nodding to the audience. The aim is to raise the dramatic stakes, but combined with Macdonald’s lens — which knits together the story with a pleasant, too-romantic glow — what ends up happening is a messy smoothening of an intricate story. Forster’s book — a masterpiece,...

For fans of costume dramas, “Howards End” is like a quick hit of “Downton Abbey” cut with the cinematic beauty of any Keira Knightley flick. For everyone else, it’s even better.
The first thing you’ll notice about Kenneth Lonergan’s superb adaptation is its speed — which is an odd and exciting quality for a four-hour British period drama that begins with, ends on, and is titled after an old house. The focus may be a stationary locale, but the pace is aptly quick. Before you can you stop to think “Why do we need another adaptation of ‘Howards End’?”, 15 minutes have flown by and you’re already enraptured by the Wilcox and Schlegel families.
Credit goes to all the elements that make similar genre fare stand out — the costumes, performances, telling glances, and detailed sets — but what makes this Starz limited series feel all its own is a conscious dismissal of certain civilities.

Annabelle: Creation begins on an isolated patch of California somewhere in the 1950’s. The beginning shots walk us through a doll makers’ trade. Unsettling close-ups of paint cracked faces, some with dead eyes, some with no eyes at all. Wooden arms and legs dangle in and out of focus as the masters’ hand fits the pieces together. By the end, we’re introduced to Annabelle, the most hideous doll ever hand crafted. You’ve probably seen this opening creation scene play out before. Nightmare on Elm Street, Child’s Play 2; it’s horror movie standard.
Quickly we’re introduced to the Mullins family. Samuel Mullins is a loving husband and father who makes a comfortable living with his dolls. His dolls are so popular,...

Annabelle: Creation is one of 2017’s scariest films!
Variety reports: “Annabelle: Creation,” which conjured $35 million in its opening to dominate an otherwise lackluster frame last weekend, will wind up the weekend with about $64 million in its first 10 days. The film is the fourth in New Line’s highly profitable “Conjuring” universe and should see the combined worldwide grosses hit the $1 billion mark this weekend, thanks to 2013’s “The Conjuring,” 2014’s “Annabelle,” 2016’s “The Conjuring 2,” and “Annabelle: Creation.” Next up is “The Nun,” starring Taissa Farmiga and Demian Bichir and due out July 13.
In his review, Michael Haffner says “it proudly stands next to The Conjuring films as delivering real scares. What helps with this is making the audience afraid of not just the doll, but of what other being is haunting the house as well as the always hidden mother. It’s a terrifying trifecta that fits perfectly into the ominous surroundings.

As expected, New Line's Conjuring spin-off dubbed Annabelle Creation took the top spot at the box office this weekend with $35 million. The low-budget spin-off has already doubled its $15 million budget, and it's potentially shaping up to be one of the most profitable movies this year. Other newcomers The Glass Castle and The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature both underperformed, leading to weak opening box office numbers.
Box Office Mojo reports that Annabelle: Creation debuted in 3,502 theaters, for an impressive $10,006 per-screen average, with The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature debuting in third place with $8.9 million, with a meager $2,232 per-screen average from 4,003 theaters, behind Dunkirk in second palace with $11.4 million. The Glass Castle opened in ninth place with $4.8 million, earning a $3,337 per-screen average from 1,461 theaters. Annabelle: Creation, a spin-off of The Conjuring, came just shy of its predecessor, 2014's Annabelle, which debuted with $37.1 million, with a grand total of $256.8 million ($84.2 million domestic,...

David F. Sandberg’s Annabelle: Creation proves that history does, in fact, repeat itself – and not by following in John R. Leonetti’s footsteps (director of Annabelle). Sandberg takes a page out of Ouija: Origin Of Evil‘s playbook, going the period route to recalibrate via prequel beginnings. Warner Brothers trusted their up-and-coming horror workhorse to salvage Annabelle’s name, much like how Mike Flannagan made Ouija relevant again. In every sense of the phrase, Annabelle Creation is 2017’s Ouija: The Original Of Evil. Noticeably improved upon, wicked in haunts and smart to cast little Lulu Wilson (child actor from Ouija: Origin Of Evil). It ain’t October yet, but who says you can’t squeeze a few screams in before summer dries up?
Annabelle’s origin takes us to the Mullins residence, circa 1950. Samuel Mullins (Anthony Lapaglia), a retired toymaker, offers his roomy estate to a Catholic orphanage with no other options.

WaterTower Music has released the soundtrack from the film, which you can order here.
Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Benjamin Wallfisch (upcoming It, A Cure For Wellness, Lights Out) is recognized as one of the leading film composers of his generation. His masterfully unnerving 24-track Annabelle: Creation film score offers a potent dimension of eeriness that magnifies the suspenseful discomfort when set against picture.

While Sony's The Dark Tower did managed to take home the box office crown in its opening weekend, it certainly wasn't a convincing win, just barely beating Dunkirk with $19.1 million, coming in under most expectations. This weekend, The Dark Tower box office prospects are looking even worse, facing a tough second weekend that brings in three vastly different movies to theaters, New Line's horror prequel Annabelle: Creation, the Lionsgate drama The Glass Castle and the Open Road Films animated sequel The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature. It seems like a one-week reign at the box office will be all for The Dark Tower, since we're predicting Annabelle: Creation will take the top spot with $40.2 million, easily besting The Dark Tower and the rest of the field.

Don't write this Annabelle: Creation film off because the first movie wasn't that good. That first Annabelle film was rushed into production to capitalize off the success of The Conjuring. But, this sequel is the real deal. This sequel looks like a great film that tells a great story, and I'm totally excited about seeing it! I've heard great things about this film from people who have seen it, and if you're a fan of horror films, you won't want to miss out on this one.
Today we have a couple new clips from the film for you to watch. These are both pretty fun clips and each one offers up a wonderfully creepy scene that I think you'll enjoy.
Annabelle: Creation tells the tale of a dollmaker and his wife who, several years after the tragic death of their little girl, welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home.

Maybe you consider yourself a fan of the devil doll Annabelle. But guess what? You don't know the true story. But you'll soon learn when Annabelle: Creation hits theaters everywhere this summer. I'm a huge fan of The Conjuring films, but I didn't really care for the first Annabelle spinoff film. It was disappointing and I didn't think it was very good or very scary. But this sequel, Annabelle: Creation, actually looks like it could really be good and it could actually bring terror into people's lives! Maybe it's because it deals with orphan kids stuck in a house in the middle of nowhere being tormented by a haunted doll. To take things to another level of intensity, one of the main little girl characters has a handicap that prevents her from getting away fast when the demon comes after her. Here's the synopsis:
Several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation,...

"We ended up giving it just what it wanted..." Warner Bros has debuted one more super scary trailer for the horror prequel now called Annabelle: Creation, the next in the Annabelle series, which itself is a spin-off from The Conjuring horror movies. This was originally titled just Annabelle 2 when the first teaser trailer debuted last year. This one is about a dollmaker and his wife who welcome a nun and several girls from an orphanage into their home, where the cursed Annabelle doll lurks. Starring Talitha Bateman, Stephanie Sigman, Miranda Otto, Anthony Lapaglia, Lulu Wilson, Philippa Coulthard, Grace Fulton and Alicia Vela-Bailey as the Evil Mrs. Mullins. This looks crazy scary.
