Sam McCarthy and Jayden Bartels are twin siblings whose summer with their dad turns into a nightmare in Goosebumps: The Vanishing. After having supporting roles in everything from the acclaimed coming-of-age drama All These Small Moments to Audience/Epix's adaptation of Condor, McCarthy properly broke out with Netflix's Dead to Me, playing the older son of Christina Applegate's Jen. Bartels, on the other hand, first rose to stardom with her work as a TikTok and YouTube influencer, while subsequently finding acting success with Disney Channel's Coop & Cami Ask the World and Nickelodeon's Side Hustle.
McCarthy and Bartels star in Goosebumps: The Vanishing's story as Devin and Cece, twin siblings who head to New York to spend the summer with their father, Anthony, from whom they've become somewhat estranged following his divorce from their mom. I’ll say it straight away. I don’t really like romantic comedies or ‘rom-coms’ as they are better known. Hate is probably too strong a word but I can count on one hand how many I have enjoyed. And I have to say pretty much they exact same thing about weddings. They’re generally long, bring affairs and I’ve thankfully not been invited to many (maybe there’s a link there?!). So a romantic comedy about weddings might seem like the last thing I’d choose to watch but I do like to at least give ‘new’ things a go.
I’m very glad I did. Plus One had me smiling from start to finish. It’s a simple story.

Paramount Network was Spike TV, until parent-company Viacom rebranded it earlier this year. It then experienced something of a rocky start. Even though season one was in the can, the network postponed, rescheduled, and then cancelled its Heathers TV series adaptation, without airing it, because school violence is all too real in this day and age. They also tried to move the second season of Nobodies over from TV Land, but the fans didn't follow, so that plan was abandoned. Enter the American Woman TV show. Is this 1970s period piece the program which will finally put the renamed cable network on the map? Will American Woman be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Based on the childhood of Kyle Richards, American Woman stars Alicia Silverstone, Mena Suvari, Jennifer Bartels, Makenna James, Lia McHugh, Cheyenne Jackson, James Tupper, Diandra Lyle, Tobias Jelinek, Jonathan Chase, and Sam Morgan. The party’s over for American Woman: Paramount Network has cancelled the Alicia Silverstone-starring ’70s-set dramedy after just one season, our sister site Variety is reporting.
Silverstone starred as Bonnie, a mom in 1970s Beverly Hills who leaves her cheating husband to raise her two daughters by herself. (The show was based on the childhood of executive producer and Real Housewives star Kyle Richards.) Newly single, Bonnie dives headfirst into a job market dominated by men, and a dating world filled with sexually liberated swingers and psychedelic drugs, with help from her pals Kathleen (Mena Suvari) and Diana (Jennifer Bartels).

Paramount Network has opted not to renew its original comedy series American Woman for a second season.
The series starring Alicia Silverstone was originally developed and picked up to series by sibling TV Land before migrating to Paramount Network where it launched as the rebranded Viacom network’s second original scripted series.
American Woman got off to a respectable ratings start, especially in the female demos. It debuted in June to 1 million viewers in Live+3, .63 rating in adults 18-49, a .90 with W18-49 and a 1.02 with W25-54. While down from the debut of Paramount Network’s first original scripted series, limited drama Waco (-48% in total viewers, -43% in adults 18-49), which is not unexpected as half-hour cable comedy series tend to open lower than dramas, American Woman’s opener held well in the female demos, on par or slightly above Waco‘s numbers, and improved its time period...

“American Woman” will not be returning for a second season, the Paramount Network announced Wednesday.
The series starred “Clueless” star Alicia Silverstone as a mother navigating the 1970s sexual revolution. Mena Suvari and Jennifer Bartels also starred in the 12-episode first season. While the John Riggi-created series started off strong, it did not maintain high enough ratings to merit a sophomore run.
The cast also included Makenna James, Lia McHugh, Cheyenne Jackson and James Tupper. John Wells, John Riggi and Alex Hardcastle served as executive producers.

Whether it's drugs, est, or a letting your hair down to a Bay City Rollers song, insight comes if you allow it.
It wasn't wine and friends night that helped anyone take a step forward on American Woman Season 1 Episode 9, even if Kathleen was pretty proud of herself for reading the est pamphlet twice. She had a lot of work to do.
Bonnie needed a few hours to herself, and Diana needed advice she could only get from -- Alan? Yep.
Diana made a pact with herself to do whatever she can to get ahead at the bank.
Then the reality of Jeff's promotion hit her square in the face when decided he no longer needed to work because his new role was to delegate. It's too bad to go back and wonder whether Diana's recent transgressions had anything to do with Jeff's promotion, but now she's stuck with it.

Diana and Kathleen are better together than apart, but despite some fairly dark times, things were looking up for them by the end of American Woman Season 1 Episode 8.
Kathleen was having a hard time letting go not only of Greg, but the news of his sexuality, what it meant to her and about her, and Diana's keeping the news to herself.
Kathleen needs some work on her filter and her self-confidence, and if she takes the path that struck her like a ray of light at the end of "Jack," she should get some help in those areas soon.
I remember growing up the girls from Texas always finished in the top in beauty pageants.
If you were to watch Miss America or Miss USA (and all the little girls did at that time), you could count on Miss Texas to be stepping onto the stage as a finalist. It...

It might seem easiest to blame it on the heat, but the truth of the matter, things were a lot different only 43 years ago.
There weren't any messages or warnings included with American Woman Season 1 Episode 6, but with the world as different as it is now, it almost feels as if there should have been.
When the Paramount TV president gets fired on the night this particular episode of television airs for concerns raised about comments made by Amy Powell in a professional setting, which they believed were inconsistent with our company’s values, well, it makes any discussion about sensitive topics feel very prickly.
But maybe watching this slice of life from 43 years ago will help. I have no doubt it will also hurt. What I mean is I hope it will help the conversation even though bringing it up at all will hurt because thankfully, we've come a long way.

While Bonnie is finding her groove again, Kathleen is running off the rails, but Diana's unlikely friendship may be the key to setting her straight.

Paramount Network has been slowly rolling out their original programming, and a part of that initiative includes American Woman, a 30-minute comedy based loosely on the childhood of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Star, Kyle Richards.
Starring Alycia Silverstone, Mena Suvari, and Jennifer Bartels, the show takes a look at women from the 1970s and the issues they dealt with including their sense of self and agency in relationships, employment, parenting, and many other areas.
Bartels stars as Diana, a kind and struggling junior loan officer who lives with her mother, takes pride in her work but finds it difficult to be proud of her job while living alongside the rich and famous, and hopes to find love even as she continues proving to herself she's just as exciting as all of her peers.
We had the opportunity to chat with Jennifer by telephone recently and discovered she's just as charming as Diana.

The “American Idol” alum’s cover of The Guess Who’s 1969 classic will serve as the theme song for the Paramount Network’s upcoming series “American Woman.” Loosely inspired by the upbringing of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Kyle Richards, the show stars Alicia Silverstone as an unconventional mother struggling to raise her two daughters after leaving her husband. Though the rewards are great when it’s done well, period TV is difficult to pull off. For every “The Crown” or “The Americans,” shows that milk tension and drama out of their movement into a future we all know is coming, there are several less-well-remembered series that couldn’t make that leap. (Several of them premiered in the wake of “Mad Men.”) When we’re familiar not just with the setting but with what comes next for characters, seasons’ worth of investment through the infinitesimal movement of history can be a big ask. And the temptation to substitute easy cultural references for meaningful insight about the era is a big one.
That’s a problem facing “American Woman,” Paramount Network’s new comedy-drama hybrid set in the 1970s. The show, notionally based on the early life of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Kyle Richards, positions her as...

It’s easy to go overboard with wild prints, bell-bottoms and platform shoes when depicting the 1970s in television and film, but costume designer Judy Gellman avoided clichés when she created the wardrobe for the cast of “American Woman.” Premiering June 7 on Paramount Network, the dramedy, set in Beverly Hills in 1975, is loosely based on the early years of co-executive producer and “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Kyle Richards.

Remember when summer used to be the dead zone for TV programming? Ha! Now it's the time when a young upstart like Paramount Network (R.I.P., Spike TV) can drop two swing-for-the-fences shows – one set in the modern Wild West, the other in swingin' Seventies SoCal – featuring glossy production values and brand-name stars. Also on deck: Cinemax has a new J.K. Rowling import (non-Potter division) from the BBC; Freeform joins the Marvel Universe; and that mystery entity known as the Audience Network delivers a new take on a classic post-Nixon thriller.

If you love watching the true life stories of Kyle and Kim Richards unfold on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, then you don't want to miss out on how their own mother, also a real housewife of Beverly Hills, got her groove on in '70s.
When I was little, I wanted to be Kim Richards. She was the more prolific of the two sisters at the time, and we didn't know where she was going to be in the future. Her blonde hair was gorgeous! Give a little girl a break!
Now, I want to go back in time and see what it was like to be their mom. Her life looks like it was a lot of fun, and who doesn't want to step into the wild life of a woman in the '70s if even just for a little while?
The clothes, the typewriters (I have one just for fun!

Alicia Silverstone is heading back to the ’70s… and she’s ready to party!
In the first trailer for Paramount Network’s new series American Woman — which you can watch above — the Clueless star plays Bonnie, a 1970s Beverly Hills mom who discovers her snake of a husband (James Tupper) is cheating on her. So she strikes out on her own, raising her two daughters and rediscovering herself with the help of best friends Kathleen (Mena Suvari) and Diana (Jennifer Bartels).
For Bonnie, “rediscovering herself” means dipping her toe into the wild ’70s party scene, with plenty of sex, drugs...

“You’re just gonna forget that this ever happened and just move on,” the busted-cheating husband says to his wife. “Yeah?” she replies with an almost-frightening smile — that then morphs into a truly frightening stare. “I can’t do that.”
Here’s the first trailer for American Woman, Paramount Network’s half-hour dramedy starring Alicia Silverstone as the wronged spouse. Set in the mid-1970s “amid the sexual revolution and the rise of second-wave feminism,” it follows Bonnie, an unconventional mother who is struggling to raise her two daughters after she bails on the hubby.
Bonnie fires the maid and gardener then tells her besties Kathleen (Meni Suvari) and Diana (Jennifer Bartels) that she’s going to find a job. (Diana knows this math: “Try working twice as hard for half the recognition and a quarter of the pay.”) All three discover their own brand...

TV Land is becoming a powerhouse of original content, and while every effort they make might not create a winner, they are assembling a collection of exceptional efforts.
American Woman feels slightly out of place with their particular niche, which is something like “’80s sit-com meets a new age,” but that’s something that may become clear as we get closer to the show’s arrival. It was just announced today that the show received a series pick-up, and there isn’t a lot to go on yet, except that the show stars Alicia Silverstone, Mena Suvari, and Jennifer Bartels.
It’s inspired by the real-life upbringing of co-executive producer Kyle Richards, which might mean anything, and is written and executive produced by John Riggi (30 Rock, The Comeback). John Wells (ER, Shameless, The West Wing) is also executive producing, so you have to think we’re putting forward a serious effort here.

The cast of Stranger Things is growing on Netflix.
When Season 2 comes around, Paul Riser, Sean Astin and Linnea Berthelson will also be along for the ride.
Reiser will play Dr. Owens, a high-ranking member within the Department of Energy on a “clean-up” assignment, tasked with containing the events of last year.
Astin will be Bob Newby, a kind-hearted former nerd who went to high school with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Sheriff Hopper (David Harbour) and now manages the local Hawkins RadioShack.
Berthelsen will portray Roman, an emotionally damaged, magnetic young woman who suffered a great loss as a child. Although she doesn't live in Hawkins, she' mysteriously connected to the supernatural events at the lab.
In addition to Ryder and Harbour, they’ll join new series regulars Sadie Sink and Dacre Montgomery, along with the group we've come to love already, Joe Keery, Noah Schnapp, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo,...

Thank God the Lucas Bros. (a.k.a. Keith and Kenny Lucas) didn't follow through with law school. If they did, we probably wouldn't have played witness to the pop-culture treasure trove that is the animated show Lucas Bros. Moving Co. or their cannabis-fueled antics in 22 Jump Street. And we probably wouldn't — actually, never mind, they probably would still have the wherewithal to come up with a satiric show about community organizers in Brooklyn. But before that rolls out, the twins are joining forces with fellow comedians-in-arms Jermaine Fowler, Kevin Barnett, Jennifer Bartels, Lil Rel Howery, and Josh Rabinowitz (pictured above) to unspool a sketch-comedy series on truTV. Titled Friends of the People, the show debuts tonight with jokes tied to Morgan Freeman, Steve Harvey, and murderous geriatrics.
