The new film "Shotgun Wedding" highlights the danger of having a reasonably interesting concept without similar follow-through. When the trailer was released a couple of months back, there were a number of folks on Twitter who seemed delightedly mystified at how a seemingly innocuous romantic comedy about a bride and groom getting set for their wedding in the Philippines turned into an action movie when said wedding is beset upon by vicious pirates. And the setup is indeed kind of a welcome and dark twist on the friendly, low-key, and low-stakes comedies that star Jennifer Lopez has made throughout her career. But the execution of the setup is desperately wanting, in part because the film and too many (though not all) of its players don't have the right comic notes or even know which ones to hit.

Last year when Marry Me, the romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson was being released, many were touting it as a return to form by the pop singer-turned-actress, once a reigning queen of rom-coms. But the film was hardly worth the fanfare and landed with a whimper in theaters and on streaming. Sometime around the release of that movie, Shotgun Wedding was in the works and seemed to signal that after an unfortunate snub fest for her performance in Hustlers, Lopez was returning to a most beloved genre. Shotgun Wedding appeared to be the right call — it took some familiar notes from J.Lo rom-coms of the past and threw it into an action movie blender. With a cast of iconic comedians and a totally game Lenny Kravitz in the mix, Shotgun Wedding seemed like a surefire hit, but it's overwhelmingly bland despite extra special ingredients being present.

Hollywood star Jennifer Lopez, who leads the cast of Jason Moore’s film “Shotgun Wedding”, was initially unsure about starring in the project after working on the movie “Marry Me” and was only convinced after reading Mark Hammer’s script, media reports said.

Both made me happy for her, but her latest, Shotgun Wedding, is something altogether different, a frenetic action comedy that never puts on the brakes. Against the odds, the expectations and the run of play, here is a romcom starring Jennifer Lopez and it’s … well, it’s pretty good: enjoyably goofy and sparkily written. Lopez plays Darcy, a woman who agrees to a giant wedding party on a luxury Philippine island holiday resort which her insecure fiance Tom has laid on for her. He’s a failing baseball star, defensive about being recently dropped from the team and likably played by Josh Duhamel. (Ryan Reynolds is one of the executive producers and may possibly have had his eye on the role.)

“Shotgun Wedding” was proposed so long ago that Lopez has been matched with three different partners: Her first costar was Ryan Reynolds, who dropped out and now remains solely as an executive producer. He was replaced by Armie Hammer, whose personal controversies soon sent him in an entirely different direction. Somehow Josh Duhamel caught the bouquet, leaving him with the thankless role of Tom, a “groomzilla” who pays more attention to his pineapple centerpieces than to his fed-up fiancée, Darcy (Lopez).

There is no need for any screenwriter to rehash lazy wedzilla tropes ever again, regardless of gender. But Tom’s stress is at least a little understandable, with two demanding families sharing space...

Should you ever find yourself needing to kill time on a long journey — say, to a friend’s ill-advised nuptials in some distant tropical locale — you could probably do worse than Shotgun Wedding. It is, in a lot of ways, the quintessential plane movie: not bad enough to be offensive, neither good enough to demand your full attention nor complicated enough to require it, and better than having nothing to watch at all.

Here on the ground, though, where the options for theatrical and streaming content are nigh infinite, it’s a much harder sell. Directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Shotgun Wedding amounts to an action romantic comedy in which the action is uninspired, the romance tepid and the comedy flat — such that not even rom-com queen Jennifer Lopez can elevate it above aggressive mediocrity.

Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel are finally walking down the aisle. The actors are appearing alongside each other in the upcoming rom-com "Shotgun Wedding," which has long been in the works. Prime Video released the second trailer for the film on Jan. 11, and it shines a spotlight on the movie's supporting cast, especially Jennifer Coolidge as Duhamel's character's hilarious mom.

The film, written by Mark Hammer, will hit Prime Video on Jan. 27 and follows Darcy (Lopez) and Tom (Duhamel), whose families are taken hostage at their destination wedding. According to a description from Prime Video, the R-rated comedy is a "hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure as Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones - if they don't kill each other first."

The first trailer for the movie dropped on Oct. 4 and delivered all the promised laughs and hijinks, plus fans' first look at Coolidge, who's rocking some heavy-duty weaponry of her own.

At the risk of hyperbole, I'm tempted to proclaim to all the masses that we're living in a golden age of trailers that tease one (relatively) normal movie premise and then take a complete 90-degree swerve into something else entirely. We just saw that unfold in real-time with the hilariously-named "Plane," the latest Gerard Butler actioner that unleashed one of the most entertaining title reveals we've received in quite some time. Oh, and should you be tempted to think that this trend is only able to be enjoyed ironically, take it from /Film's Ryan Scott that "Plane" does, in fact, deliver the goods.

Lionsgate announced on Tuesday that the actor is officially confirmed to star opposite Jennifer Lopez in the action comedy “Shotgun Wedding.”

“We couldn’t be happier for our bride and groom of this ‘Shotgun Wedding,'” Erin Westerman, president of production for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, said in a statement. “We know Josh and Jennifer will make a compelling and sexy on-screen couple and they will be fun sparring partners as their dream destination wedding erupts into a memorable nightmare.”

Sonia Braga and Jennifer Coolidge are also joining the cast as Lopez and Duhamel’s mothers, respectively. The film is set to begin production in the Dominican Republic later this month.

“We are also thrilled to bring Jennifer and Sonia on to our cast as mothers of the bride and groom,” Westerman added. “Their acting and comedic talents will add another fun layer to this already-rich action-comedy.
