Hotd: How Ridley Scott's Gladiator Influenced the Battle of Rook's Rest - Main Image

Interestingly, the location chosen to shoot the scene, Bourne Wood, was inspired by Ridley Scott’s Gladiator.
How Gladiator Inspired the Battle of Rook’s Rest in Hotd
In the latest instalment of the House of the Dragon making-of docuseries, The House that Dragons Built, director Alan Taylor revealed that they were shooting at the same location that was the opening battle scene for the original Gladiator.
Production designer Jim Clay explained, “Bourne Wood is a bit of a popular location because it goes back to Gladiator days and Ridley Scott. So you think, 'If Ridley Scott chose it, then it’s got to be pretty good,’ and it did.

This post contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon" and its source material.
War has been brewing in Westeros for quite some time. Season 2 of "House of the Dragon" plunges headfirst into the interiority of grief and rage driving characters during such volatile times, with alliances being made and broken at a whim. Political pawns like Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) have doubled down on the need to enact violence, while shrewd, morally bankrupt knights like Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) have hatched desperate plans to assert their power. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) has taken a measured path so far. "There are those who have mistaken my caution for weakness," she states in the latest episode, right before dispatching her men to aid the residents of Rook's Rest. Meanwhile, we have those who machinate from the shadows, like Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), who emerges as a wild card during the first large-scale battle that plunges Westeros into chaos.

This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 4 and Fire & Blood.
Now that’s how you end an episode of a Game of Thrones series! House of the Dragon season 2 hasn’t started off slowly by any means. In the first three episodes alone, viewers have witnessed the beheading of a toddler, a twin brother duel to the death, and Ser Otto Hightower’s (Rhys Ifans) increasingly exasperated facial expressions. Still, this civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons has been calling out for some actual dancing. In season 2 episode 4, dance those dragons finally do.
Unlike last week’s installment, which shunted the Battle of the Burning Mill offscreen, episode 4 depicts the Battle at Rook’s Rest in its full, fiery glory. Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Rhaenys (Eve Best), and King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney), along with their respective dragons Vhagar, Meleys, and Sunfyre, descend upon...

The first season of Netflix's long-awaited Neil Gaiman adaptation The Sandman was, aptly, the stuff dreams are made of. Blurring the lines between serialised and episodic storytelling, and operating - aptly - in an almost dreamlike mode throughout its duration, the streamer's take on Gaiman's legendarily lore-filled 75-comic dark fantasy was the perfect introduction to the tale of Tom Sturridge's Lord of Dreams, Morpheus, and his Endless siblings. And with Season 2 already in production, today Netflix have announced a slew of exciting new additions to the cast for the upcoming series.
Playing characters from The Sandman collections Season Of Mists and Brief Lives, the cohort assembled to help usher in our return to the dream world includes *deep breath* Ruairi O'Connor (The Morning Show) as poet Orpheus, Game Of Thrones alumnus Clive Russell and Jack Gleeson as Odin and malevolent hobgoblin Puck respectively, Freddie Fox (Slow Horses) as God of Chaos Loki,...

The Sandman is Morpheus, also known as Dream of the Endless. And the Endless never end, right? I mean, it’s right there in the name.
Yet, with the show’s latest casting announcement, it’s clear that producers of the Netflix series The Sandman have the end in mind. The latest characters to appear in the series include some major players in Neil Gaiman‘s climactic tale World’s End, including Morpheus’s son Orpheus, Puck from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Norse gods Loki, Thor, and Odin.
Orpheus will be played by Ruairi O’Connor, best known for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Morning Show. Comic book readers know Orpheus as the son of Morpheus and Calliope, the muse kidnapped by insecure writers in the episode bearing her name. After spending decades in development hell, a live-action adaptation of the Neil Gaiman comic book series The Sandman actually made it into production and was released into the world as a Netflix series in August of 2022. (Read our review Here.) Season 2 of the show went into production last year, then had to be put on pause for a while due to the writers and actors strikes. Thankfully, The Sandman season 2 was able to resume production as soon as those strikes came to an end, and a couple months ago we heard that new cast additions include Esmé Creed-Miles (Hanna) as Delirium, Adrian Lester (Hustle) as Destiny, and Barry Sloane (Pleasureland) as The Prodigal. Now the names of several more new cast members and characters have been revealed:

Good thing The Dreaming is an endless expanse, because The Sandman Season 2 is starting to get a lot more crowded.
Game of Thrones‘ Jack Gleeson will join Netflix’s fantasy series for its sophomore run, TVLine has learned. He’ll play Puck, who is described as “a malevolent hobgoblin who serves as the royal jester to King Auberon of Faerie. Puck is fascinated by mortals and enjoys nothing more than making sport of them for his own amusement. He’s also the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

“The Sandman” is adding several new cast members to its already growing lineup for Season 2, and these actors will be playing characters introduced in fan-favorite storylines from Neil Gaiman’s beloved DC graphic novel series, including Ruairi O’Connor, who has been cast as the son of Tom Sturridge’s Dream.
Netflix announced on its Tudum website Tuesday that O’Connor will play Orpheus : “the poet, musician, and oracle, is the only child of Dream and the muse, Calliope. Orpheus is an idealistic, romantic, young man – and very much his father’s son – until tragedy strikes and reveals to him the true nature of love.”
Also joining “The Sandman” cast for Season 2, per Tudum, are Freddie Fox as Loki, Clive Russell as Odin, Laurence O’Fuarain as Thor, Ann Skelly as Nuala, Douglas Booth as Cluracan and Jack Gleeson as Puck, all characters featured in the “Season of Mists” arc from “The Sandman” graphic novels.

House of the Dragon‘s world gets even bigger in season 2. With the Dance of the Dragons Targaryen civil war now in motion, the “Blacks” (Queen Rhaenyra I’s supporters) and the “Greens” (King Aegon II’s supporters) must enlist the other Great Houses of Westeros to their cause.
This means that many of the characters we’ve gotten to know thus far, Prince Jacaerys (Harry Collett), Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), Ser Criston (Fabian Frankel), and more, will hit the road to recruit nobles like college football coaches in need of a star quarterback.
“People have to curry favor with the other lords and figure out who’s on what team,” House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal told Den of Geek. “It’s nice because instead of just introducing 18 new characters, we follow characters who we already know going to these new places and meeting new people.”
Condal is exaggerating a bit.

This article contains spoilers for "Fire & Blood" and this week's episode of "House of the Dragon."
Given the many surprises in the latest "House of the Dragon" episode, it's easy to overlook the sudden arrival of Alicent's brother, Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox). He shows up to accompany Ser Criston Cole on his way to Harrenhaal, even though Cole clearly doesn't want him there. Luckily, Gwayne's arrogant, summer child ways are quickly snuffed out of him by the threat of a dragon attack up above, which Cole averts by having them ride into a nearby forest. Gwayne tells Cole he's in his debt, implying a more friendly relationship between the two in the episodes to come.
It might seem weird for this barely-mentioned-before brother of Alicent to so suddenly get all this screentime, but in light of all the complicated family trees on "House of the Dragon," we should probably...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers for Episode 3 of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” Season 2.
With another “House of the Dragon” episode comes another burial.
Shortly after the funeral for young Prince Jaehaerys, the Cargyll twins were laid to rest after their brother-vs.-brother duel last week. For the first time this season on “House of the Dragon,” no major characters died — except for a bunch of soldiers from House Blackwood and House Bracken in the Battle of the Burning Mill.
Though it happened offscreen, the first official battle of the Dance of Dragons has been waged, and it left hundreds of bodies littered in the fields. Not far from there, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) arrived at the ancient, leaking castle of Harrenhal and claimed it for himself without any bloodshed. Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale) immediately bent the knee to Daemon and offered him a humble...

HBO‘s sophomore season of House of the Dragon doesn’t premiere until Sunday, but the network is ready to announce Season 3 today! This announcement is an amoosbouche for the carnage, incest, and backstabbing to come when Season 2 launches this weekend. Word about HBO greenlighting House of the Dragon Season 3 is hardly a surprise, considering the show’s overwhelming success. In addition to attracting new fans to the epic familial drama series, many who wrote off Game of Thrones after an underwhelming final season have caved to the Fomo and embraced the star-studded spinoff.
House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and focuses on the House Targaryen.
After a significant death in House of the Dragon Season 1, Rhaenyra and Alicent are ready to go to war, trading “blood for blood” and burning oppressors where they stand.

Demonstrating the formidable strength of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” empire, the network has renewed “House of the Dragon” for Season 3, in advance of its Season 2 premiere on June 16.
The “Game of Thrones” spinoff series — co-created by Ryan Condal and “Thrones” author George R.R. Martin — has proven to be a fire-breathing hit for the network. The show enjoyed the biggest premiere audience ever for an original series for both HBO and HBO Max (now Max), and the first season averaged 29 million viewers an episode over linear and streaming. It was renewed for Season 2 just one week following its series premiere.
Based on author Martin’s “Game of Thrones” book “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” follows the Targaryen dynasty in the fictional continent of Westeros. It takes place nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about 100 years after the Targaryens united the Seven Kingdoms.

Ahead of Sunday’s Season 2 premiere, HBO has confirmed it has renewed House of the Dragon for a third season.

The hectic inaugural season of House of the Dragon covered roughly 20 years as the long-standing peace under King Viserys came to an end. In the season’s final two episodes, the series found its footing, establishing the parallel claims to the throne between the Black faction that follows Viserys’s appointed heir, daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), and the Green faction under Rhaenyra’s former best friend, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), who follow Alicent and Viserys’s young, impetuous son Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney).
All the table setting and time jumping that dominated the better part of the first season have, perhaps inevitably, set the stage for a much stronger second season for House of the Dragon. It’s also, especially for a Game of Thrones property, surprisingly restrained. The first four episodes made available to press cover only a few weeks, and the entire opening episode, “A Son for a Son,...

Even though it felt like a long time ago, it has been 18 months since the House of the Dragon season 1 finale came out. While the fans of HBO’s fantasy series have been desperately waiting for the second season to come out, it looks like the wait is finally coming to an end.
The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel “Fire and Blood,” which follows the Targaryen family. The focus of “House of the Dragon” is the civil war, also known as the “Dance of the Dragons,” which took place roughly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.”

“It’s the best of both worlds,” declares “Slow Horses” star Jack Lowden. For our recent webchat he adds, “It has this super intrigue and sexiness of the world of espionage that’s never boring to look at, but it also has the workplace element, with a dreadful boss and a terrible working environment that I imagine most people around the world can relate to at some point in their lives. It’s that mashup that’s so fantastic, and that’s actually what Mick Herron, the author of the novel said that he wanted to do a workplace drama thriller,” he explains, adding with a grin that “he chose espionage because nobody knows anything about espionage, so nobody can tell him if he just makes stuff up.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

*House Of The Dragon S1 Spoilers Ahead*
If we had a nickel for every time a trailer for the second season of a big budget fantasy series based on an iconic book series released on a Tuesday in mid-May, we’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right? Yes folks, within mere hours of the first teaser for The Rings Of Power Season 2 dropping yesterday, HBO fired back with its own fancy new trailer for House Of The Dragon’s second season. And sure enough, there be dragons. Check it out below:
As you may recall, Season 1’s breathless finale saw Aemond Targaryen’s (Ewan Mitchell) dragon Vhagar brutally kill his half-sister Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault). Families, eh? Unsurprisingly, Rhaenyra’s none-too-happy about Aemond’s heinous deed, and in this new trailer things are hotting up...

HBO has released the first full-length trailer for House of the Dragon season 2 (via SFFGazette.com), and brace yourselves because it's epic. In the newly released footage, we see more of the scheming which continues in Westeros as war beckons between Queen Alicent Hightower and Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.
The Targaryen civil war known as the "Dance of the Dragons" is nearly upon us and this sneak peek does a phenomenal job of setting the stage for the conflict to come.
All the major players are highlighted, with the sneak peek ending on a suitably epic note as Rhaenyra stands tall with Syrax looming large behind her. Who will prevail? Book readers (and most Game of Thrones fans) will know, but we won't spoil anything here,
"The first season was so much about the royal family, that 1 percent of the upper 1 percent that rules this world. All the people in the...

On Tuesday, HBO released the full trailer for “House of the Dragon” Season 2, which premieres June 16.
The eight-episode second season of the “Game of Thrones” prequel finds the Targaryens in a civil war, with the Greens – supporters of Aegon II Targaryn (Tom Glynn-Carney), son of late king Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and the traditional heir – on one side, and the Blacks – partisans of Viserys’ daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), Viserys’ chosen heir, and her husband/uncle Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) on the other. Both sides claim the Iron Throne, and they will kill their kin to get it.
The trailer previews the combination of political strategy, intense action, and interpersonal backstabbing that’s the “Game of Thrones” franchise’s signature. On the political side, there’s a small council meeting where Aegon forcefully rejects the idea of dignity in favor of revenge. On the action side,...

All hail the king ... or the queen! Which one has the rightful claim, you ask? Well, that depends on which side you happen to have sworn allegiance to in the great Targaryen schism known as the Dance of the Dragons.
"House of the Dragon" lived up to its billing as an essential "Game of Thrones" prequel, set hundreds of years before Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen ever made their claims on the Iron Throne. The events of the mythic Targaryen civil war always loomed large in the background of the original HBO series, but never before had we seen the fire, blood, and (of course) incest depicted with as much fervor as the 10 episodes that comprised its debut season. With all the major players fully established and the stakes set impossibly high, season 2 now has a full runway to double down on our favorite royal squabble and dive deep into...

HBO is rolling out some beauteous dragon footage and a potty-mouthed Aegon in the season 2 trailer for House of the Dragon, which returns June 16.
The drama based on on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” is setting up an epic war between the Targaryens and the Hightowers following the Season 1 finale, which saw tragedy befall the former (R.I.P Prince Lucerys Velaryon) at the hands of the latter (Prince Aemond Targaryen). The series was largely able to continue filming last summer during the strikes as it has a largely British cast under Equity contracts rather than SAG-AFTRA ones.
Season two returning cast is Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, and Rhys Ifans. “House of the Dragon” Season 2 is about to soar onto screens soon.
After Season 2 was first unveiled at Ccxp in Sao Paolo in December 2023 with a teaser, and later released viral dueling trailers, the season of the dragon is almost upon audiences. Season 2 will not have a time jump like in Season 1, and instead solely focus on former besties turned step-family Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke) as they both battle for the Iron Throne.
Per the official synopsis, after the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine), an undeniable rift has grown between his daughter Rhaenyra (D’Arcy) and wife Alicent (Cooke), after their close friendship as teenagers. A rift that’s now a full-blown civil war.
The series is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” and is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.”

On June 16, the second season of House of the Dragon, a Game of Thrones prequel in which the powerful Targaryen dynasty unleashes a bloody war for the Iron Throne of Westeros, will begin streaming on Max. In anticipation of the release of the second season, we are sharing available information about the upcoming episodes.
Warning: the text contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 1.
House of the Dragon Season 2 Will Be More Like Game of Thrones
The events of the second season take place during the Dance of Dragons, a long-running war between representatives of the Targaryen clan for possession of the Iron Throne. The main forces will be concentrated between the "black" forces of Rhaenyra and Daemon and the "green" army loyal to Aegon. Both sides will continue to kill each other's children, dragons, and distant relatives.
