The son of General Tire & Rubber Co. founder and President William O'Neil, he formed General Teleradio in 1948. This company bought RKO Pictures in 1954. He retired from the now renamed RKO General in 1985. He had 5 sons, Shane, Mark, Conn, Liam and Owen, and 4 daughters, Lili, Carol, Claire and Grace.
