Featuring Francesca Scorsese (daughter of Martin) and Sawyer Spielberg (son of Steven), it’s hard not to go into Tyler Taormina’s Christmas Eve In Miller’s Point with curiosity piqued as to what the next generation might have helped to create, beside the point though that might be. Happily, Taormina’s atmospheric film turns out to be a rich slice of retro-styled Americana, replete with the classic movie flourishes of their forebears, from the distant wails of an Amtrak horn, to the precarious picket-fence perfection of a dime-a-dozen suburb.
The set-up is simple. Several generations of the Italian-American Balsano family are heading back to matriarch Antonia’s (Mary Reistetter) home on Long Island to break bread together across one long, eggnog-soaked Christmas Eve. While nominally sharing in the festivities, though, each subset has its own priorities: the little kids, never far from a fractious meltdown, are all about the...

Tyler Taormina’s latest film Christmas Eve at Miller’s Point is a refreshing departure from the typical high-stakes, disaster-driven Christmas offerings. Taormina offers a tender, observational look at a sprawling Italian-American family as they gather in their ageing matriarch’s suburban home for one last time.
Taormina forgoes a traditional plot in favour of vignettes, weaving together snippets of conversation and lingering on small details that paint a vivid picture of the festivities. Cinematographer Carson Lund uses a dreamy mix of vintage Christmas colours, twinkling fairy lights and close-ups of toy trains to evoke a sense of nostalgia.
What makes Christmas Eve at Miller’s Point so compelling is its commitment to capturing the small, often banal moments that define family gatherings. The adults debate whether it’s time to move their ailing mother to a nursing home, masking their grief with forced smiles. Meanwhile, the youngsters, particularly teenage...

Christmas movies are a thing on their own. They tend to be heartwarming dramedies akin to slice-of-life movies that make us emotional but also offer us a sense of warmth and comfort. Centred around the year-end festival, these movies often speak about the spirit of togetherness and are drenched in a cosy, celebratory spirit of the festival. From Frank Capra’s ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ to Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’, we have seen the festival bringing people together, literally or emotionally. Tyler Taormina’s ‘Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point’ is the latest, charming addition to this list that uses its big ensemble to offer a time capsule to a a bygone era.
While Christmas is a cause for celebration, it may not be the same for everyone everywhere. Some may cherish getting together and sharing the same space with their families. For some, it can be pitch-perfect like...

Intimate, disparate moments of an annual holiday tradition are artfully portrayed in director Tyler Taormina’s latest, the Long Island-set Christmas Eve In Miller’s Point. The audience ostensibly tags along to a chaotic yuletide party hosted by the matriarch of the Balsano family, which is attended by every conceivable far-flung relative.

Filmmaker Tyler Taormina quickly fell in love with IFC Films’ idea for how to market his merry-and-bright feature. The indie distributor’s trailer for “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point” plays as a full-on throwback to how holiday season comedies used to be advertised, complete with baby boomer doo-wop, a long list of grinning cast members and a warm narrator promising that, “It’s more than a holiday. It’s a gift for the whole family.” But the nostalgic packaging came with an unforeseen side effect.
“A lot of the people online are like, ‘Oh, I thought it was a horror movie.’ It was a very common reaction that was not at all thought of,” Taormina shares. “Earnest nostalgia is not able to be detected. The irony is expected. It bummed me out.”

I see Christmas Eve in Miller's Point as a combination of two storytelling instincts, the first of which is, unsurprisingly, the Christmas movie. This is one of those not just set around the holiday, but about it, and scenes of family togetherness (both fuzzy and prickly) resonate beyond their moment. The other, however, is the snapshot ensemble movie, in which the moment is everything. We're with these people for one night of their lives, and the point is just to be with them, share this experience, and find meaning wherever we decide to see it.

"This may be their last... Christmas Eve in Miller's Point. So it's time to make this one count." IFC Films has revealed the official trailer for an indie ensemble comedy non-narrative film called Christmas Eve in Miller's Point, a sort of vintage, nostalgic trip back in time to an awkward Christmas Eve. This premiered in the Directors' Fortnight sidebar at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival back in May, and opens in US theaters starting in November this fall. On Christmas Eve, a rambunctious extended family gathers for what could be the last holiday in their ancestral home. As the night wears on and generational tensions arise, one of the teens sneaks out with her friends to claim the wintry suburb for her own. The cast includes Michael Cera, Elsie Fisher, Maria Dizzia, Gregg Turkington, Matilda Fleming, Lev Cameron, Ben Shenkman, and Sawyer Spielberg. Yes it has a cast of famous youngsters,...

Every conceivable trope and tonal variant of a Christmas movie appears to be accounted for in Tyler Taormina’s Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point. There’s a boisterous family gathering, where characters bask in nostalgia. Romances and rivalries abound. Grievances are aired. There’s physical comedy and a crisis that could alter the nature of Christmases to come. Oddball family members who could fit comfortably in a movie as broadly drawn as National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation mingle freely with those more subtly and melancholically rendered, who might fit in among the atmosphere of Sofia Coppola’s sad and lovely A Very Murray Christmas.

What kind of Christmas movie do you get when your director’s inspirations are early-90s Nickelodeon live-action shows and 1960s European cinema? In Tyler Taormina’s case, the answer is Christmas Eve In Miller’s Point.
The movie sees four generations of the Balsano family get together for what, it transpires, may be their last annual Christmas party. With celebrations underway, two of the clan’s younger members sneak out in an act of teenage rebellion, which plays out against a backdrop of wintery and suburban Long Island.
The film is Taormina’s follow-up to the well-received indie pic Ham on Rye. He co-wrote the script with Eric Berger. Michael Cera is a producer and part of an ensemble cast that includes Elsie Fisher, Maria Dizzia, Francesca Scorsese, Ben Shenkman, Gregg Turkington, Sawyer Spielberg and newcomer Matilda Fleming.

Writing on Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island in 2010, Anthony Lane whipped a quote from Umberto Eco: “Two cliches make us laugh but a hundred clichés move us, because we sense dimly that the clichés are talking among themselves, celebrating a reunion.” Eco’s words resonate even stronger in Christmas Eve at Miller’s Point, a fascinating simulacrum of festive movies in which references to annual favorites are thrust together with about as much delicacy as the family it tenderly depicts. The island isn’t Shutter but Long, specifically a small town in Suffolk County where we meet four generations of the Bolsanos, a blue-collar family going through the motions and rituals of their annual get-together, adoring and enduring each other as best they can in what might be their last year in the family home. The filmmaker behind this delicate, strange, reflective bauble is Tyler Taormina, co-founder of the...

There isn’t much plot in Tyler Taormina’s very charming and rich movie about one huge family’s festivities, but it’s engrossing, exalted even
At first glance, there’s some reason to be suspicious of this film, with its possible nepo shenanigans. It’s about an extended blue collar family with a tinge of crime … and it features Francesca Scorsese, daughter of Martin. It’s also about the teeming warmth of a suburban American home, whose inhabitants seem on the verge of something epiphanic … and it features Sawyer Spielberg, son of Steven. But for all the influence-anxiety that anything like this carries with it, this is a very charming and rich movie, teeming with ambient detail, from very original and distinctive film-maker Tyler Taormina, whose previous picture Ham on Rye I very much admired.
Despite or because of the fact that almost nothing really happens in any conventionally dramatic sense,...

It’s the holidays, and strings of gaudy rainbow lights twinkle from gables. In cozy living rooms, the elders doze in their chairs while middle-aged siblings bicker and booze it up around the dining table. Little kids squirm in makeshift beds trying to stay awake for Santa, while truculent teenagers sneak out into the suburban night to do secret teenager things. Ok, so there are no chestnuts roasting on an open fire — instead there is a salad bowl full of red and green M&Ms — but in almost every other respect, Tyler Taormina’s delightful stocking-stuffer “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point” is as alive to the domesticated magic of the season as a classic carol. Taormina’s fondly multivalent, Millennial-Norman-Rockwell perspective incorporates a child’s experience of the holiday, overlaid with a teen’s and a parent’s and a grandparent’s and so on. It feels as though...

All We Imagine as Light (Payal Kapadia)
After one film, Payal Kapadia is a name you should know––a fresh, intrepid voice in cinema. And in the wake of student protests turning the world upside-down, she’s an essential up-and-comer. Her lone feature to date, 2021’s A Night of Knowing Nothing, is an experimental immersion into India’s own student revolutions––a brutal awakening into the shockingly violent...

This holiday season is one where the offspring of iconic Hollywood families come together, apparently.
“Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,” which is set to debut in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, stars Francesca Scorsese and Sawyer Spielberg, two film stars in their own rite who hail from respective auteurs Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
Decade-plus indie staple Michael Cera leads the latest feature directed by Tyler Taormina; Cera also produces the ensemble family dramedy that marks Taormina’s follow-up to his 2019 coming-of-age comedy “Ham on Rye.”
Set during one Christmas Eve, a family gathers for what could be the last holiday in their ancestral home. As the night wears on and generational tensions arise, one of the teenagers sneaks out with her friends to claim the wintry suburb for her own, per the official synopsis. Cera is seen donning a cop uniform in one of the first look images,...

Spielberg and Scorsese's kids are teaming up for Christmas Eve in Miller's Point, showcasing Hollywood nepotism. Sawyer Spielberg and Francesca Scorsese are cast in main roles, but they're eager to establish their own careers. The Spielberg/Scorsese collaboration goes beyond their kids - they are also executive producing a Cape Fear TV series remake.
Spielberg and Scorsese are set to collaborate on Christmas Eve in Miller's Point, but there's one massive catch. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are not only two of the best directors of all time, but also share a friendship that goes beyond mutual respect for each other's work. However, the upcoming Christmas film looks set to deliver a monumental Spielberg/Scorsese team-up, only it might not quite be what audiences had in mind.

Masters of the Air star Nate Mann explains why Rosie reenlists after completing his 25 missions in the Apple TV Plus limited series. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks as a Playtone-Amblin production, Masters of the Air chronicles the true story of the 100th Bomb Group during World War II. The well-reviewed series stars Mann as Lt. Robert "Rosie" Rosenthal, and the character is one of the lucky few who completes his 25 mandatory bombing missions. Despite having earned himself a ticket home, Rosie decides to continue his service.
In a recent interview with THR following the Masters of the Air finale, Mann breaks down why Rosie decides to reenlist and rejoin the fight. Read his full comment below:
“Initially, I didn’t know what to make of it. It’s almost baffling to think about the odds, the statistics, the numbers, and, of course, the harrowing nature of what those 25 missions were for him.

Band of Brothers was a groundbreaking HBO achievement, showcasing deep, character-driven storytelling in a war setting. The series, based on a true story, follows "Easy" Company's intense journey during WWII, highlighting bravery and sacrifice. Many well-known actors, like Damian Lewis and Michael Fassbender, got their start in Band of Brothers, showcasing exceptional talent.
Band of Brothers was an incredible achievement by HBO; one that might’ve started the prestige TV era, proving that with good actors and scripts, episodic television can give more time and depth to all of its characters than a two-hour movie ever could. It’s one of the best HBO shows of all time, and one as ambitious as tricky, to the point that writer John Orloff admits they were worried if the disparity of points of view could work.

The World War II drama series "Masters of the Air," created by John Shiban and John Orloff and currently airing on AppleTV+, takes place in 1943 and follows Usaaf majors as they are transferred to England to aid the Allied war effort. Austin Butler plays Major Gale Cleven and Callum Turner plays Major John Egan, both real-life Usaaf pilots, and the series is based on the biographical book "Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany," written by Donald L. Miller.
"Masters of the Air" was also co-produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, who previously oversaw the WWII drama shows "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" after collaborating on the 1998 film "Saving Private Ryan." These two men love harrowing tales of soldiers and seem hellbent on recreating the 1940s soldiers' experience on film as accurately as possible. “Not Much Thicker Than A Coke Can”: Masters Of The Air Episode 1’s Gnarly Injury Explained By Expert

An Air Force expert confirms that the gnarly injury depicted in Masters of the Air episode 1 is historically accurate, as freezing cold temperatures on B-17s could result in frostbite and similar injuries. Masters of the Air episode 1 sees a gunner accidentally rip the skin off his hands after grabbing a freezing cold gun. While the show accurately captures the environment, relationships, and B-17 designs of World War II, it omits certain content due to time constraints.
Air Force experts reveal that one particularly gnarly injury from Masters of the Air episode 1 is historically accurate. Masters of the Air is the spiritual successor to Band of Brothers and The Pacific, and follows a United States Air Force unit, the 100th Bomb Group, during its service in World War II. Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Masters of the Air is not a sequel to Band of Brothers but shares producers Spielberg and Hanks, making it a companion piece. The show chronicles the real-life actions of the 100th Bomb Group in World War II. Masters of the Air and Band of Brothers intersect in timeline and location, as both occur during WWII in Europe.
